I was literally facing into this problem two weeks ago and didn't find a satisfactory answer... so this video is SO well timed. It will make my next attempt at a location shoot so much better. Great tip with the lens pouches! Thank you for the great video Markus.

I just bought my first Professional Stainless Steel light stand last week from an Amazon lightning deal. It came in a real nice carrying bag, I really had no idea one was even included. These things are wicked expensive for what they are, but at a certain point they're also a very needed thing as I've now learned the hard way. Cheers 🍻

Thanks for sharing! I don't feel so crazy for going on the road with stuff. I don't even know who would say "oh that's a lot of stuff", other than the usual portion of the internet always begging for gear, or looking at the negative side of everything. Love the Lens protector hack for tripods and light stands!... Imma check the interwebs for a set of those. All the best!

ThinkTank derby is great. Travelled all over the world with it. Had to gate check twice on a couple regional flights but other than that always stowed in the overhead compartment. I miss traveling for shoots 😢

Great use of the pouches... never would have thought about that. The And1 bag... I had one of their products years ago, sadly, I don't know what it was. My favorite tripod is about a 28 year old Bogen with the quick connect plate and the attachable tripod wheels. Thanks for teaching us about packing for a trip!

Markus, one of the things I like about you is your improvisation nature and creativity skills. Great tips! Thank you.
Btw, I used old single malt tin cans packs with proper foam padding, and some adjustments to make solid lens-carry cases. our consumption culture is not good for the planet, I do my own small part to preserve.

❤💓❤*Markus* so cool about the duffle bag experiment. Also cool about the lens case over tripod and light stand. I see how they made up for the fact that duffle bags have zip padding. Although next video will be you putting padding in one to make a super bag... Great videos as always have learned so much from you. Thank you. ❤💓❤

It makes sense to take nice gear to the places you go. Wow! The places you must have seen! I've not left the US. My favorite place I've been is still the Mojave Desert. I was stationed in Twentynine Palms in the early 80's. And I lived in Las Vegas for a couple years.

Hi Markus, yes it is a lot of stuff, but I do understand. Light stands are good. IMO those from Manfrotto that clip together are pretty neat. Also expensive but so are most things worth having and using - good enough to rely upon and a great space saver. Also as clipped together less rattle and wear & tear. IMO one of better options. I note you didn't reference these in your recent stand review. Come in 2 sizes. I like and swear by the smaller 'baby' version but medium sized probably better outdoors if any breeze with modifiers fitted.

Hey Markus! I had a video assignment for my film class last semester and was really struggling. I was having a problem choosing the right gear, story ideas weren't flowing, it was a nightmare. Your videos talking about creativity over gear really put things into perspective and inspired me to challenge myself to spark my imagination and once I had all the right pieces together, my professor gave me a 98%. I'll never forgive my professor for not giving me a hundred lol but if it wasn't for your videos, I don't think that encouragement to break the "Gotta have that gear!" curse would've broken. Thanks!

Really appreciate the insight on using a duffel bag vs a dedicated camera bag when checking in! Great tips in this video! For a future trip I may have to consider getting a rolling camera bag. What I have been using is a backpack to carry all of my gear and that stuff gets SO HEAVY walking from place to place on transport days. This would be such a back saver. May use the backpack for my clothing.

Nice episode Mr. Markus. Wish I had known about using the lens covers back when I was lugging gear around gigs. My solution to the 'anything pointy' scenario was using those rubber Superballs (back in the day.. remember super balls?). I'd drill a small pilot hole in and then they were good to screw or cover any spikes or (insert whatever here). They worked great too as tripods non-skids or for times you needed a little extra protection because of wet ground or puddles. Your Dufflebag story makes perfect sense to me.

  • @HR-wd6cw
    @HR-wd6cw 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Good overview. One tip, if your tripod head unscrews, it's better to take it off and carry it on with you (especially if you have an expensive one, like Really Right Stuff). But if you do that, you'll want to get a screw protector or remove the screw from the tripod so it doesn't get damaged. Generaly for me, since I'm not packing a lot of stuff, if I have a checked luggage bag, I usually can fit a weeks worth of clothes, plus a tripod and 2 light stands (moderate sized ones maybe 7 ft stands) into the same bag and just wrap everything in my clothing (try to put things towards the center of the bag). My cameras, lights (AD200s) and lenses go in a bag that goes into the over-head bin, and other misc items go into a backpack. On most flights, I'm only paying for a single checked bag. When Ido travel , Idon't bring large softboxes though, although I will bring a 24" square Godox softbox which packs down nicely and really cannot get damaged in the checked bag. But the other one (my 24" Westcott) I can fit into the backpack.

Great stuff! I also have the On Stage bag. I bought it for a massive professional mic stand that I never use anymore. It's my tripod bag and I'll throw in some other gear. But I only use it when I'm driving somewhere or just to haul things around the house. I use a standard carry-on suitcase for other gear. Since I only use iPhones and a DJI Osmo Pocket I have no need for a dedicated camera bag. I use a backpack for most of my stuff and the carry on is for things that don't fit in the backpack (drone, larger panel lights, tripod, etc.). I have a couple collapsible tripods that are perfect for my camera setups and easily fit in the backpack plus some smaller gear.
A couple things to mention, flying first class sounds all fancy, but you need to check at least that duffle bag (I love that idea!) and then another suitcase for clothing and such. So it just makes more sense to book a ticket that allows 2 checked bags. Yes, Southwest Airlines includes 2 checked bags in all their fares, but it is nice to have a better, more comfortable seat when lugging around all that gear and regular luggage. Especially if you're a solo traveler. And they don't do a lot of international outside North America. I"ll use Premium Economy for long haul flights as it includes 2 checked bags and is basically a first class seat.
Also, since you're a member of the media, many airlines allow bags with gear to be checked without charging a fee. It depends on the airline and there are limits to how many can be classified as such, but that helps out the professional news organizations and other media companies that will have a lot of gear. But it's not guaranteed. You'll find the policy buried in an airlines baggage policy page, not in some popup summary window. I haven't had the situation where I needed it since I've never had to check more than two bags plus my carry-on and personal item. 4 total items is still plenty of room for me since I pack almost all my gear in the two bags I bring into the cabin. However I have had to put some gear in with my clothes that maybe don't fit anywhere else.

Hey Markus. I am American but living in Thailand. Going on a trip today, and taking a small Shimoda backpack Explore v2 35L. They weigh carry-on bags here in Thailand. Even personal items! So my bag for today has to weigh 7kg or 15 pounds. I put a Canon R5, R6, three RF Holy Trinity 2.8 zoom lenses, a flash, and a Rode mic. It weighed 20th on my first weight check at home. So I had to take five pounds of expensive stuff and lots of little stuff out and put into my checked luggage. What’s basically left is two camera bodies and three lenses and an otherwise completely empty bag! It’s absurdly ridiculous to have these standards so low.
And here’s the thing here in SE Asia, they will not let me pay extra if I want to bring more. They don’t care if the bag has batteries in it and etc. They just say you cannot get on the airplane then.
For a while I just had someone sit with my backpack while I checked in. But then they started putting scales at the gates! They will literally let you miss the flight rather than carry an extra KG (2.2lbs) on the carry-on bag on the airplane. So absurd.

Thanks for the video and tips. Question Markus, do you take all this equipment with you on international trips too? I wonder if a special permit is needed for transporting this much equipment on international flights. Just curious because I would like to take all my equipment to the Caribbean on my next visit. Thanks in advance if you get to answer this question.
