Agree basket star.From brittle star group. Spends their lives glued to soft corals filter feeding.
One rare genus of deep sea starfish flips on its back to filter feed marine snow but otherwise filter feeding is 99% brittle stars because of their legs.
I believe this one belongs to the Gorgonocephalidae family

Starfish always seemed otherworldly to me, like little jelly aliens, I can't be the only one who thinks they shouldn't be called starfish because they aren't all 5 armed or "fish" as they are normally portrayed
But a star doesn't have to have only 5 points.

I think the creature at 3:40 is a Basket star (Gorgonocephalidae ?) ? It has a distinct center and arms that divide in a lot of places, like a tree branch
Seen like that, it looks like those dried ramen you put in water for a quick meal
Yup you’re right, they’re basket stars which are an order of brittle stars.

We humans have something cool in common with starfishes (and other echinoderms). Vertebrates and echinoderms are Deuterostomes, meaning that during embryo development we both develop the anus first and the mouth last while creating our digestive tract. So yeah, echinoderms are the closest relatives among invertebrates to vertebrates (not considering other chordates of course)
Why does the anus develop first?
@@burner555 i don't really know if it has an adaptive meaning but it is probably linked to a cathegory of genes that control development in the early stages of life. It just happened that in some moment in life history (probably during Ediacaran period) the first group of deuterostomes started developing anus before mouth. As I said, it's hard to find an adaptive explanation to "why" anus first, what advantage did it gave to fitness, but it happened. (forgive my English, I'm not a native speaker)

Not everything in evolution has a reason, sometimes it's just that it happened to happen that way in our common ancestors, so it's preserved in all its descendants. Molluscs and arthropods are the opposite, so it can happen either way.

I have 3 old specimens of starfish, they appear to be the same species but 1 has 4 arms, 1 with 5 arms and one has 6 arms. When you look underneath you can see where the extra arms grew from especially on the 6 arm one as it lost it further from the mouth and the 5th and 6th arm grew from the same spot. Their teeth seem to cover their tube feet.

When I was little I had a big fish tank. While in the process of getting more fish for it, we ended up with just a small, black, and spikey starfish (not sure which kind) and one fish that looked like Dory from Finding Nemo. Little me watched Dory lose a fight to the starfish. At least the starfish got a good meal!
Oh no! That made me laugh while also feeling bad. I could imagine a child watching something horrid and getting traumatized but like, yeah that's life. 🥲

3:40 not a starfish, but a crinoid. They belong to the same phylum, but their class is different. Good video dude, keep going
None of them are star FISH.
They have been classified as
Sea Stars for decades.
Obviously Not fish.
I thought crinoids had stalks, hence them being called sea lilies
That looks more like an ophuroid(brittle star)

Because I forgot aquariums exist for a minute, on one of my early ocean dives I got occupied by staring at starfish, waiting for them to move. My partner asked me wtf I was doing, and she reminded me on her slate that we can go watch them in huge tanks nearby where we wouldn't be relying on oxygen tanks.
