  • In this video I fill up My Peugeot 208 1.6L GTI with fuel and give a beginners guide through the types of things to consider before you fill up with fuel whether it be petrol, diesel or other. I also take a look at and reset my average mpg from the cars trip computers. A common question I get asked regularly is regarding the cars mpg, particularly from other driving instructors and so here it is. Were you surprised about the mpg from a 208Hp car? The video is by no means comprehensive but gives a basic overview. I Hope you enjoyed this video. Please consider subscribing if you haven't already and I look forward to seeing you in the comments section.

      I usually use my card to pay, but sometimes the card machine at my local garage doesn't work. The staff are usually pretty lenient, and there are 2 shops that are a 2 minute walk away from the garage, so if the card machine doesn't work, they'll let you go to the shop to get the cash out (their only condition is that you have to leave your car there if this does happen.)

    Even though I work in a petrol station I've never used a fuel pump before, so this is going to be a super handy video for when I pick up my first car so I dont look like an idiot to my coworkers
    Edit: as an extra point, the fuel pump may not work right away, as the staff have to authorise it so they can check you aren't on your phone/smoking etc. If you spill some fuel, let the staff know, even if you cover it with sand yourself, depending on the amount they may need to make a note of it. When paying, make sure you check which number pump you used, sometimes theres more than one "silver car over there".

    Couple of things I would like to add to this video if I can. You filled your car until the nozzle clicked. That is fine but the pump was at £44.92. You could have easily pumped another 8p of petrol in there and has a nice round £45. (maybe that is my ocd talking) but I always round to the nearest £. Also one last tip, and this goes for everyone. When you fill up with petrol and go in to pay, ALWAYS lock you car folks....always. You never know who is around watching and waiting to see what you left in the car. I am still shocked by the amount of people I see going in to pay and leaving cars unlocked with valuables in cars, handbags, phones etc.

      How can you say that the "majority of people pay with card"? You are just making that up. Anyway, I would still rather go to the nearest pound even if I did pay with card, which I don't. wow - great car to learn to drive in! Surprised that the insurance for teaching learners in it isn't astronomical! Impressive economy for the performance though! Could you make a video on deciding between getting a petrol or a diesel car? Most instructors seem to be using diesel - I learnt in a ford fiesta 1.6 tdci which did more than 65 mpg a few years ago. I suppose if you chose diesel it would be less enjoyable for you driving the car but would save you a fortune on fuel for lessons.

      I would recommend you get a petrol if you didn't learn in one because if you never drive a petrol its going to be a bit of a surprise for you when you do drive petrol for the first time. I really think all instructors should teach driving in a petrol.

    • @taylorcarter831
      @taylorcarter831 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gravemind6536 Also, I think they want diesels off the road soon, so either way everyone's going to have to learn to use a petrol eventually. I think people are put off by petrols because it's so much easier to stall in them, but once you've actually got going, there's no difference is there? I also learnt in a diesel but brought a petrol and there was a lot of stalling in my first couple of weeks (luckily never in a dangerous place, and most other drivers were pretty receptive of my P Plates) but I'm glad I know how to drive a petrol now.

      Moff's Autos Once he helps the learner understand that their probable little Micra first car will drive completely differently. Number of people drive around in an instructors more powerful car then wonder why they keep stalling their Micra for example.

      Moff's Autos I was ok. I'm talking about others when they first drive their new car and it's not the same. Something an instructor should mention to them if they have been teaching them in a better quality car. Not to lose confidence in a more unforgiving car.

    • @GeneralmoffblogsBlogspotmoffvs
      @GeneralmoffblogsBlogspotmoffvs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      dsmythy yes. It does all depend on how neutrally driving comes to you. For me personally i was able to operate the car straight away and therefore could easily switch between different cars. I passed in a petrol 1.8 Mazda turbo which was an instructor car and I currently drive a Ford Fiesta Zetec S 125hp. Never had a problem with either of them.

      @beardyface8492 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't forgotten, but both the instructions & the still-not-long-enough hoses are useless when you arrive in a van :P
      Regardless of which, those long hoses can mark your paintwork dragging over the car body, which they often do despite attempts to make them not by the pump designer.. so "scroo the petrol station's opinion" & land the correct side, I'm the customer, not them. If they complain I'll go somewhere else in future!

    Personally... I'm a bit anxious. And sometimes it is difficult to grap confidence even with obvious things. Therefore even small details should be shown. I had a great instructor and had driven with her about 80 hours. Passed my practical test at third time - but was very close to pass at first. Since i have my first car (bought just a week ago). I feel like need to learn driving from the scratch again just to polish all the technics that been shown on the course. Anyway... This is another problem, cause sometimes we were driving to the fuel station however I never been given a chance to pop the tank myslef. And trust me. Whatever you been shown, comes much, much easier than you need to figure it yourself.
    Advice to all young/new drivers. - Once you Pass your test, do not stop learning! read the highway code, dirving guidance books, keep watching videos like this, always stay calm and responsible on the road. As you grab your confidence and experience, be patient to other new drivers that just passed their test as you will help them to gain theirs.

    For example if I go in to the shop to pay the fuel, should I leave the car beside of machine number 7, or should I park it first in the parking area nearby the shop?
    Thankss

    What does 117.9 pence actually mean? How much is that in pounds?

    • @jrh5544
      @jrh5544 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cost of the petrol is 117.9p. If this were written in pounds it would be given as £1.17 9/10. But since we can’t have 9/10 of a penny it would be rounded up to £1.18 per litre 👍🏻

    It is important to know your pump number and amount of money. A scam which someone did was to go when it was very busy fill up maybe £60.34 and then go in and pay in cash for someone who has not had a lot of petrol, maybe you only pumped £22.54 on pump 5. Their partner spots the low value transaction and signals which pump number to pay. They drive off and you go in and don't know your pump number cashier loads the pump details that need to be paid, put your credit card in the machine and put your PIN in, so you could easily pay £60.34 for £22.54 of petrol unless you can identify the clerical error. If they are caught they just say they got the wrong pump number by mistake, girl pumped man paid did not know how much fuel she pumped, seemingly no crime has been committed. This has been done a couple of times locally.

    I have a few doubts on how the process of refuelling a car in Britain works. In Spain, for example, most pumps at most stations are ‘prepaid’ ones. That is, you first must go in the petrol station, pay for the amount of fuel you want to refill your car with and then, lastly, you put the fuel (usually by yourself). But in this video, it is the other way around: you fill your car up first and then you pay. Could you, for instance, walk into the station in the first place and order for ‘20 or 30 pounds of unleaded’ (like we usually do here) or you just help yourself as much as fuel as you like and then pay for it? Thanks!

    I hope this isnt stupid question but I've filled up a few times and a couple of times the nozzle has been stuck in the pump. Like it wouldn't come out of the pump to let me fill up if u know what I mean. I had to try for a few minutes to take the nozzle out of the pump. I dont know what in doing wrong lol. Thanks for any answers

    Still confuses me that the black pump is for diesel and the green for petrol in the UK. Here in the US it’s the other way round. Black is petrol and green is diesel

    2 more things for new drivers. On many cars the fuel gauge on your dash has an arrow pointing left or right. It shows the position of your fuel filler cap.
    Also make sure if youre running diesel or petrol. It often says that on the fuel filler cap. Also the nozzle from the diesel pump is too wide to go into a petrol tank.

    In my country there's designated employees at the gas stations that will pump the fuel for you, so this is helpful if I ever get to drive in some other country where self pumping is common.
