+MaRI0CEnTRAL I'm not a Fan of the DS port in Diddy Kong Racing mainly because it wasn't great. Remember the Barrel rolls you can do in a Plane? Well it was removed in the DS version. The cutscenes were great but they are terrible in the DS version. The Cheat codes were removed as well as 2 characters being Banjo and Conker and got replaced with a Track editor which was not good as well Tiny and Dexie Kong. No longer there was secret Balloons scattered on the Hub world. The tracks were worser than the 64 Version and the Music was better in the 64 version.
4:03 Arnold being the code for larger characters is likely a reference to Arnold Schwarzenegger. In 1997, not only was Arnold at the height of his popularity, but he was also the most recognized body builder of all time, and know for being quite large, like physically. Edit: After perusing the comments I see this was mentioned already.
Fun Fact: the 4 new tracks in the DS version are considered part of a "6th world" called DK Isles, which makes sense because of the environmental elements in those tracks. You can see this when choosing a cup on Multiplayer Trophy Race (Both DS Download Play and Multi-Card Play).
I borrowed my cousins N64 in the early 00's and she had both Mario Kart 64 and this game, and I much preferred the latter over the former. I think I like adventure racers more and this game was exceedingly good at that. It may be because I haven't played in a while, but I swear I didn't know about some of the features you covered, such as the magic codes in the original, and especially the world secrets and recording your own dialogue in the DS version. I've never unlocked the space world either in any version of the game. I also agree with your older comment on the 2/3DS circle pad making playing these games a little easier. You've got me wanting to bust out my copy of the DS version and play a whole new profile from scratch. I feel like despite liking and playing these games I barely know anything about them!
EuroMIX2 This is a great comment. Sometimes you learn new things about games you like no matter how many times you play them. This is what I admire about video games thanks for the comment. I am glad that you want play Diddy Kong Racing DS again, it just makes me feel like I have done my job.
Well the ds version is completely fine now that you can play ds games on the 3ds. The analog stick helps. Super Mario 64 DS also benefits from this as well which makes both games stand out from their originals. I always liked the added features but that was something I was hoping would happen and it did.
I think DKR:DS doesn't get nearly enough credit and it gets a ton of undeserved hate. I didn't like not having Banjo and Conker, but they weren't legally allowed to appear in the game, and I personally think having Taj, Wizpig, Tiny and Dixie playable more than makes up for their absence. I liked the use of the touch screen in almost everything outside the races where you had to use them to get a starting boost, and I never enjoyed the coin challenges on the N64 in the first place they were too brutal for all the wrong reasons. I felt like the DS game was ultimately the same game but better, it had more content and a lot of it was really cool like making emblems, customizing vehicles new tracks etc. It was a ton of fun to play with friends as well single card download play resulted in some of my favorite multiplayer experiences on the DS. I feel like DKR DS is one of the gems of the DS library, and stands up fine even against Mario Kart DS.
+Jzhu 64 It would've been exceptional had the new team at Rare actually improved the original, but the remix is a very mixed bag. The graphics took a nose dive on DS, textures in many areas are very dirty, the water effects are horrific with wave physics completely cut, cut speech, cut cutscenes, badly animated new cutscenes, a plethora of missing special effects, missing music, terribly animated story elements that the old Rare would never have allowed, Comic sans everywhere. Very distasteful. I still enjoy it as a standalone game - but its disappointing - Rare would've been better holding this one until the 3DS.
In Moxie Girlz: Be True! Be You! (DS), the cheat codes menu will appear if the buttons "Y, B, X, R, L and A" are held down at the same time. In the cheat codes menu, the following sounds will appear if the cheat codes are entered ARNOLD - Big Moxie Girlz Characters BLUEST EYE - All Moxie Girlz Fashions are Blue PINKALICIOUS - All Moxie Girlz Fashions are Pink RED HOT (or RED ROSE) - All Moxie Girlz Fashions are Red YELLOW SUBMARINE - All Moxie Girlz Fashions are Yellow RAINBOW BOYS (or RAINBOW BRIDGE) - All Moxie Girlz Fashions are Tie-Dye (Rainbow) BLABBERMOUTH - Turns the Moxie Girlz into Loud Air Horns THETRUTHHURTS - Turns the Moxie Girlz into Beautiful Little Liars Note: the cheat codes "ARNOLD" and "THETRUTHHURTS" are references to Arnold Schwarzenegger (famous bodybuilder) and Pretty Little Liars (TV show on ABC Family).
MaRI0CEnTRAL i see in da magic code screen> play as T.T. and Drumstick. wat are da magic codes for them?, please tell me. i'm stuck in da middle of da game, and really want 2 know how 2 play as them without unlocking them normally.
Hey MaRI0CEntRAL you should pick up a high quality cable for your N64, a high quality S-Video lead (not cheap knockoff ones) or high quality scart will give up a pin sharp picture from your n64. I purchased a Spook S-Video lead a few years back and the colour simply shines through, everything is sharp with no fuzz - would do wonders for your recording. I noticed the fuzz and blur around the edges of everything which suggests your using the crappy leads Nintendo provide with the console!
I recently cracked out the hideous DS rendition of Diddy Kong Racing, the despicable use of comic sans on the main menu, also irritatingly the characters never look at the road - Diddy Kongs head on DS looks up most of the time and swings from side to side constantly which is disgusting - on N64 your character would look at other racers going past, but focus on the road. Rubbish/chopped up sound on DS, worse textures on DS, no wave physics on DS, rubbish menu's on DS, worse graphics on DS, cut up tracks on DS, newly added rubbish and badly animated intro on DS, rubbish touch screen on DS - all just some of the issues CLASSIC/REAL Rare would never have let out the door.
liveswired dont forget the bad VAs and rare not even allowing banjo and conker into the game but rather replace with dixie and tiny, and honestly, having tac and the pig (forgot the name) shrunk in size to fit the vehicles just make them look hideous. OH! and the most important one: the hovercraft was a harder to manouver compared to the N64 one, which i hated the most cuz i used to LOVE the hovercraft back in the 64. for a remake, i have seen better ones. this one was, in my opinion, a slap in the face by rare
BirriaBoy64 Agreed on all those - the hovercraft controls are definitely screwed up. Perhaps a side effect of the water physics being completely removed.
Was a flawed remake but it was still a good game. Great extra features, interesting new music(Jungle Falls and Treasure Caves especially) and much more content than the N64 original. I just wish they focused on making a Diddy Kong game instead of a Mario. From the items stunning you for a long time, zippers/boosts being nerfed/slowed down, and oversimplified physics on all vehicles(no flips/Barrel rolls on Planes, No moving water/waves on boats, god awful drifting that took very little skill to master) really made it feel like they tried to make Mario Kart out of DKR. Damn shame. Maybe if it was made by people who really liked Diddy Kong Racing for what it is as opposed to what it isn't, it would have been a perfect remake.
Great video dude. So many great memories with Diddy Kong Racing DS.
Power Star Hunters it's a great port just like mario 64 DS

the music....its just not the same......
Not at all. But at least Treasure Caves and Jungle Falls are bangers.

People are just mad that their favorite game was changed abit. They are blinded by nostalgia.

+Jzhu 64 *facepalm* That comment is all kinds of "wrong".
Taj and Wizpig are amazing in the car. They where definitely made with the d-pad in mind with their loose steering.
I was actually planning on doing that when I get time I will for sure
the meandering mount shortcut near the finish always works for me
I didn't mention that which I probably should have but what I was doing here was showing the things that I did not in the lp
I think the code ARNOLD for big characters is a reference to Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was one of the world renowned bodybuilders at the time.
mrsonicfan21 You may be right
