      assisted fine for regular knives, but not flippers. a good manual flipper should fly out faster and easier than any assisted. i absolutely hate assisted flippers.

    • @squirts1
      @squirts1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@kendrajones984 I thoroughly dislike assisted thumb stud knives. I would only use an assisted knife with a flipper tab. Why? because when I push a thumbstud and the blade springs out your thumb and the blade are moving the same direction at different speeds. not good.

    • @LeZouave
      @LeZouave 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kendrajones984 I'm at the exact opposite, I had an assisted thumbstud Kershaw, can't remember the model, I got it in a box somewhere like 15 years... I was too afraid when the spring kick in and there my thumb on the side of the blade. So basically I ignored Kershaw for many years. Then I bought a Leek last year (yes it's one of the earliest speedsafe knife) and I totaly love it. For flipper, there is ball bearing and there is speedsafe. A good flipper with ball bearing is better but there is also flipper without ball bearing and without speedsafe and you have to flip the wrist to open them. I must admit that I don't close my knives one handed. Now I have the Cryo, Oso Sweet and Zing from kershaw. Cryo II and Volt on the way.

    Assisted opening knives is designed to open effortlessly and that makes for a fast with smooth deployment. Closing the knife should not be an issue as long as you keep your fingers clear.

    • @biteme263
      @biteme263 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Assisted knives were simply a way around the switchblade laws. Kind of shocked they haven't outlawed them yet. I own a few but to be honest I agree with the guy that doesn't care for them. If you get a well designed and made knife that is smooth you really don't need it. It is just something more to go wrong. And 9 times of 10 it will, especially if you play with it alot.

    • @JoseARomo-qv5fk
      @JoseARomo-qv5fk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@biteme263 You have to play with it a whooooooole lot before something goes wrong. The only assisted knife I've had something go wrong with was a $15 Tac Force, and that was afte a year of use and a lot of abuse. I have others of the same knife that I didn't throw or open and close non stop and they're still opening just fine. Don't abuse them and they'll be okay.

    I have two Kershaw Clash knives, one serrated. I bought the non serrated first, then bought the serrated second as a complete beater knife for automotive, home projects, and yard work. It has become my favorite knife period. I have it modified with the tip ground flat to provide a 3/8" wide chisel feature for scraping gasket surfaces. Between the blade, the serration, and the chisel point it's a very versatile knife.

  • @jonduncansakurawallknifegarden
    @jonduncansakurawallknifegarden 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I absolutely love Kershaw and I always have to hide my cheaper knives when trying to flex with friends but I’m just not that embarrassed anymore to claim that I carry kershaw more often as a beater knife that I could lose or replace easily, or let someone else use or borrow. The price point is exactly where they should be and they give you very high quality for so little cash. The speedsafe assist is actually pretty hard to get used to and I feared closing it without two hands, but quickly got used to it with the cryo. The cryo is perfect for a coin pocket and to carry above your other blade if you want to carry a smaller blade and any other size. I have the cryo, love it and carry it alongside every other knife. I have the cryo 2 and the eris and the eris is flipper and fidget tool when I really have to think hard and the eris and cryo both open and close about 500 times a day without me ever looking at my hands. Speedsafe is completely fun to use and is intuitive after a while- but I totally understand zac’s sentiment here and it’s tricky at first. I figure the amount of time that it takes to take out a soeedsafe, would be as long as it takes to get used to the amazing feature- just don’t let someone open and close the knife without proper warning that it is spring assisted. For us in Ca - we can only have a 2 inch auto and spring assisted on any size - this makes for a fun tool that has authority when it comes out and I couldn’t be more happy with Kershaw. It makes its way into my rotation for edc and for home! I was waiting for this title !! You guys are the sh*t and keep all the great content coming!!! You guys are my new knife hub now.

    I'm with you on assisted opening knives. A thumb stud or hole (or flipper tab) done right is just as effective as assisted opening and legal in many more places. I also hate the resistance when closing.

    • @bigd2829
      @bigd2829 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like springs and autos because I just enjoy the authority they have when deployed and they’re just so easy to deploy. Autos and some spring assists remind me of firearms where you usually have to disengage the safety and then deploy which is just kinda neat to me since I shoot firearms. I have a nice manual on the way though so I’m cool with those too.

    I've owned my S30V Blur for more than five years now and although it doesn't look as pristine as it did when I bought it, it certainly looks well loved and has been my EDC blade ever since. I cannot imagine using another knife as this has done everything from cutting rope and boxes, skinning squirrels to slicing up an apple or steak... The drop point design is really the most utilitarian design as it pretty much handles everything from cutting to prying and the point is still intact. Great knife and will always be my EDC and if I ever lose this one I'll simply purchase another one.

And another time I got a 79 280ZX for a parts car and when I took it apart I found an old ham sandwich. That wasn't so cool lmao. It did explain the smell though.

    I LOVE Kershaw and I really like my small knives. I own and regularly carry either the Shuffle II, Leek, or partially serrated Blur as backup blades, but I also really enjoy larger knives and always have my Strata (non XL) on me. I go for my Cold Steel Frenzy or Espada (non XL) for those days I'm feeling frisky lol

    You can get used to an assisted knife and love it! If you're used to it, it can be about as fast as a switch! Own the Leek, and Dividend....also own the Chive, Scallion, 1735 Zing, and 1735 ZingADM. The Leek is a scalpel and the tip breaks easily. My biggest gripe is that Kershaw has started moving toward manufacturing more in China than the US. Customer service with Kershaw has been amazing, and they've stood by their warranty several times for me. Great company.
