Taekwondo Footwork Trick for Closing Off Distance

  • Here is a subtle, but essential footwork pattern used in #TKD, that we are seeing utilized in #MMA to setup powerful punches, deceptive head kicks, and more explosive penetration shots for takedowns.
The position we will first look at is referred to as the “Cat Stance” or “Tiger Stance”, where we load our rear foot forward, bearing more weight than the front leg. From here we look at variations, such as the pendulum step, to cover distance and cut angles.
    1. Cat Stance/Tiger Stance and Back Stance (1:11)
    2. Powerful Double-Jab for #Boxing (2:39)
    3. Rose Namajunas vs Zhang Weili Head Kick Setup (4:10)
    4. Penetration Shot for Double-Leg Takedowns (5:19)

I think if you do like he mentions and step back foot first on an angle (kind of like you would circling to your rear hand side in Boxing or Muy Thai) but just make the angle more extreme, it will feel more natural.

I practiced this pendulum style alot back then, because i loved JKD and Bruce Lee is my inspiration, but as more and more people doubt and mock Bruce Lee and his style over the hyped MMA, BJJ, somehow i started to develop this inferiority feeling inside, since more and more people left JKD, And i stopped practicing (I'm no fighter, just a hobbyists) but deep down i still love this style, and seeing this put into one of your videos kinda give me the spirit back! Thanks Coach 👍🏼

I started in tkd as well, and after all the years ive realized that all fighting is the same but with different emphasis. Now i only practice the art of combat. For instance, many will bash capoeira, but capoeira is insane when you mix it with bjj. Likewise, many would saying spinning kicks aren't practical in the street, i agree. Spinning kicks to me are more practical for if i get pushed or off balance and im wanting to keep my enemy at bay. Anyways, love your thoughts on this man, keep doing what you're doing.

Ah, replacing the front foot with the rear foot. I learned this in Tang Soo Do (aka Cobra Kai) and it was taught as more of an advanced-intermediate technique. I love doing this with side kicks and front kicks / teeps. For people having trouble with it, break it down into three parts the way Shane shows it. Pre-chamber, step forward with the rear foot (stand straight up at first, it helps), and then step forward / throw a kick with the front leg. Don't try to do the full thing at once until you learn the body mechanics or you'll develop bad habits.

I’ve noticed that for many workouts, I need to raise my leg and extend it, but when I try, my leg isn’t strong enough to keep my leg extended when I try to raise it higher. It feels more like a muscle isn’t strong enough to lift it up instead of not being stretchy enough

Hi Shane, I've been watching your channel since I was in college. I remember you had dreads back then. Well I've been boxing since 2015. I had my fair share of fights and its now that i'm thinking about this.
Can you punch the arms in boxing? For example lets say the opponent throws a jab. Can I throw a right hook to the arm itself behind the elbow, near the tricep? Or simply punch the bicep?
Im asking this in a strategy point of view. To fatigue the arms or break them maybe?

    • @fighttips
      @fighttips  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Limb destruction -- yes! You see Canelo do this. It's definitely a long-term fight strategy, for when you get to the pro level fighting 6+ rounds. But I like doing it when someone tries to stiff-arm or leave their jab hand out -- punch it out of the way then work your way inside.

Just load up the correct software into your Matrix mainframe. That should sort it out.

I'm not knowledgeable about taekwondo or karate, I always thought taekwondo was only kicking? Is that true? I know you are a mix martial artist and you are very smart/knowledgeable on several fighting styles and I see you mixing things up. But is taekwondo primarily a kicking only martial art?
I'm a boxer myself, I've been boxing/training boxing solid for the last 12 years. And I also did some training as a teenager. But please forgive me on my lack of knowledge on anything other than boxing, and I hope it doesn't sound too much like a dumb question, I really think taekwondo is just kicking. I always thought if I was a kick boxer I would definitely have boxing training(which I do) and I probably would train taekwondo for my kicks, and I would probably use them to sharpen my kick boxing/Muay Thai game. But now being that I'm getting older and I've only been boxing most of my life I do want to train other disciplines but I also feel like it is a little late in the game for my expectations. I don't believe there is an age limit for learning and enjoying and reaping the rewards of any combat style, but for my expectations realistically, I'm a little old. I'm a boxer and a big fan of MMA and other styles. I wish I knew you personally though, I have a passion for fighting sports and martial arts, we would get along great and I would learn a lot from you. Anyways I know I write a lot my apologies, and thank you for all you do and share with us. Thank you and God bless you and yours bro
