Vet here - teeth are one of the top causes of shortening the lifespan of a dog. A good teeth clean at the vet and potentially a few extractions, even on a 14yr old, are worthwhile to eliminate the pain and make them comfortable in their twilight years.

I could not agree more. I adopted my dog when she was 13. She had a mouthful of rotten teeth. She had all of them removed along with a complete check up and blood work 10 days after her adoption. She gets a shot of Librela monthly for her luxated patellas which are beyond repair. If you watch the video again, they have been to previous groomers where he also was matted, so it not a one time occurance. So his fur has been shaven down more than once, when do owner then learn, start brushing and getting a grooming routine in. No instead these owners let their older dog get matted again and get a puppy instead. It doesnt matter if the dog isnt groom trained, it shows the owners CLEARLY do not care about groom training him or brush training him as they got another puppy instead. To everyone being super judgmental how about you take a moment and consider that the dog isn’t being neglected because they took the time to go to a groomer in the first place! With Snowy being an older dog it can become uncomfortable to be brushed because their skin is more sensitive. Grooming can be more of a challenge because they have arthritis from old age and don’t want to be touched in certain ways so more frequent grooming is something the owners may not want to do. I’m sure those that want to will still say the owners are being neglectful but take a moment to consider the possibility that it isn’t the case.

That is a sign of a good owner, and a great start at home. I have raised my two shih tzu since they were 10 weeks old and when they went for their first groom around four months old, they were very comfortable, cooperative and well behaved. I groomed them at home and touched them constantly while eating, playing, resting… massaging their little paws and stroking the fur around their faces. Touching the insides of their ears and by their tushies. They never flinched even when getting their sanitary areas groomed. My vet loves them too because they sit still during the whole exam and are very polite when he offers a treat.

As a small dog mom of 4 and 1 medium. I agree that most of them just want a lap dog they can move around with out hassle and don't consider their health and grooming needs as long as they look cute enough. Also since a lot of small breeds can be snippy those barely not abusive owners just ignore their teeth because they don't want to get bit and it's too hard 🙄 and since they have small mouths and are low to the ground they don't see the teeth unless checking them most of the time so out of sight out of mind. All mine are rescues so 3 out of 5 were older and not desensitized to grooming and sanitary matters. The other 2 were tossed out of a car at 6 weeks so was able to work on them from the start. Took over a year to get the other 3 to be mostly calm when I brush their teeth. They have health issues so I don't stress them too much so brushing 3 times a week daily vegan dental chews (work better than greenies I do not feed them a vegan diet) and a dab of liver flavored safe to swallow tooth paste on chewy textured treat on no brush days to kinda have them brush their own teeth lol.
And they are still not ok with nail trims I need to hold them in the air with face pressed into my chest while my sister clips them as quickly as she safely can.
My mini pig is even better with letting me brush his teeth, scrape his tusks and dremel his hooves between trims. If people can devote the time energy and patience to properly take care of their animals they should just get cacti instead

I’ve had many dogs of several different breeds over the years (I’m 72 and have had dogs almost continuously since I was 20), including several coated breeds. I once bought a Maltese puppy and absolutely adored her. However, after about six weeks, I decided I did not have what it takes to keep that kind of a coat groomed properly. I contacted the breeder and explained the situation to her. She was a reputable breeder and immediately said that of course she would take the puppy back and even refunded the entire amount I paid for the puppy.
My concern with Snow and Winter is that the owners have said they want to continue grooming these dogs themselves, yet they have already shown their complete inability to groom based on the condition of poor little Snow’s matted and filthy coat and rotting teeth. I have no problem if they attempt to keep them groomed and definitely hope they can do so, but I only hope the owners recognize that if they are unable to keep them well groomed they need to commit to the reality that they need to take these adorable pups to a groomer ON A REGULAR BASIS - and BEFORE they become so matted they have to be shaved down before they can even be bathed. Another commenter noted that she groomed her Maltese while she watched TV - perfect! Brushing them every night (or at least a couple times a week) and bathing them on a regular basis will keep them from looking like poor Snow’s condition when he came in. If not, then commit to a groomer every couple of months BEFORE they become so matted they have to be shaved down.
Not trying to be a Negative Nellie here, but why have these beautiful coated dogs if you continually have to have them shaved down? As I mentioned earlier, I’ve had other coated dogs after my attempt with the Maltese, breeding, showing and grooming multiples of Yorkies and Silky Terriers at a time, and it takes a LOT of work and a LOT of commitment! I truly hope the owners of these two beautiful little dogs will make that commitment.

I really like that you always, ALWAYS give the dogs' previous groomers the benefit of the doubt. Whenever you're informed about some kind of accident or mishap during previous grooming, you explain why it might have happened and look for clues in the dog's behaviour. People are (inderstandably) super protective of their pets and often quick to assume that the groomer made a mistake or wasn't experienced enough to take appointments, but sometimes accidents are just really hard to avoid. These are living, breathing creatures, prone to moving around and bouts of anxiety in a strange, noisy environment, accidents happen even with the most experienced groomers.

I will never understand how some owners let their dogs and/or cats coat get so unbelievably matted. I'm talking about neglect where it's been like that for a while, and not the coat getting matted for other reasons. Like they got wet and ran through the woods or a short faced cat being unable to clean itself etc. Which then, of course, you get them de-matted as soon as you can. That's why it's important to do research and get a breed of dog that's coat suits your lifestyle. Don't be getting a Doodle because you want "a cute fluffy dog" yet you don't want to do the upkeep.

I'm trying not to be ugly but I really don't understand why Winter's parents let him go so long without grooming.? That matting had to be painful for him. One of the things about being a good pet parent is knowing what your dog needs and doing whatever they need. There is no excuse for going several months before grooming and visiting the Vet concerning his teeth would be in order. He's a helpless animal that depends on his parents to keep him from being matted and pain-free. Thank you for the care you gave him Vanessa

Commenters... some of this criticism is justified. I had a Bichon Frise (relative of the Maltese) for his whole 15 year life and they are expensive. They have hair that mats. You know when you buy one that their hair does NOT SHED and it's very fine and soft, perfect for matting. Also, any vet will tell you you're going to have teeth problems. Plus you can pretty much count on luxating patellas. That adds up to thousands and grooming is the least of these. Plus she bought another one! I don't understand it.

I know we’re not supposed to judge, but can we have a serious discussion about being neglectful of a senior dog’s health and grooming and thinking it’s okay to get another dog? If the owner can’t keep up with grooming a dog, that requires frequent grooming, or taking care of his teeth, in what mind-space is adopting a puppy an okay thing to do? I’m going to assume these are rescues, because thinking that they’ve spent about $1200 on a new puppy while neglecting the elderly dog will just upset me more.
I should just be thankful that they are finally being taken care off, and that other than the teeth Snow doesn’t look too bad.

He told me "get the greasiest thickest cream you can find, use it as soon as you get out of the shower, while your skin is still hydrated. Slather it into your skin and then wipe off the excess." I've used Eucerin cream since then, whether I'm just out of a shower or just working a bit into my hands at other times. I don't know of you can get it in Canada. It's a 50% oil in water emulsion with no fragrance. In my job working with animals I have to wash my hands a lot, same problem as you, and it's great for my poor hands including the cuticles, part of my bedtime ritual. :)

The only other dog I've seen lift a leg like that wasthe Cavalier King Charles spaniel my Mum rescued when I was a teenager. 'Charlie', the name his original owners gave him, lived to his early teens and developed a heart problem when he was about nine. One of the signs he was having an episode was him lifting his left leg in an awkward way.
The thing with Charlie was that he was a greedy dog, and a smart one, too. He quickly learned that all he had to do when being told off for being naughty was lift his leg as if he were having an episode... the only issue being that he couldn't remember which leg it was he had to lift. My parents and sister, being dog-people, would make a lot of fuss over him regardless. Me, being a cat person, was far more cynical. The best of it was was that Mum also noted he would lift the wrong leg sometimes when being told off. Nevertheless, he wasn't a badly behaved dog generally, and had such a sweet personality even I warmed to him. He plodded on to the ripe old age of sixteen, when a combination of heart issues and a chest infection meant we had to do the kindest thing for him... and he went all that way, lifting the wrong leg!

OMG! Winter is so little and adorable! I'd love to just hug and snuggle her all day long!! I can't help but wonder if her breeder did some grooming and brushing on her. Or was she actually BORN a perfect grooming puppy?!?
It's too bad Snowy was so matted! I wonder if his parents don't own a good slicker brush to get those mats out down to the skin? I know that I had a lot of matting problems with my toy poodle before I got my CC Coral Slucker brush! It didn't matter how often I brushed her, the brush I had just didn't get down to her skin, and mats always formed!

Super sweet little dogs. Every Maltese I’ve ever met has had a really sweet temperament. I can’t handle the tear stains tho, makes me feel kinda sick. 🤢 You did such a great job with both of these. Snow turned out amazing - you sure didn’t have much to work with!!😊😊

These two were absolutely adorable! Miss my little Maltese, Sophie, so much! She was the sweetest, most lovable dog, who loved everyone and was good with kids as well as adults. She knew no enemies whatsoever.💕💓

eating lunch, watching total cuteness. Now I'm going to be 'that person'. Why did the owners not take care of the teeth, and not have him taken care of grooming-wise for 7 months, then they get another dog that they cant take care of?

Theyre gonna attempt to groom the dogs themselves. I'm speechless. I hope they learn how to pick up a brush first.

So if the owners don't groom Snow why did they get Winter? Is Winter going to be matted every time too? Why are they not maintaining their pets, they are small dogs so brushing every day or every other day shouldn't be such an issue. probably gonna be an unpopular comment but come on guys, groom your pets, if you don't want to maintain them then don't have them! My cat was as big as these dogs, I groomed her daily, I took care of her teeth, I maintained her because it was my decision to keep her when I found her as a kitten so it was my responsibility. When she was 20 my vet said no older than 14, I had to show him her vet book for him to believe her real age!
Kudos to the dogs though, so well behaved and bet Snow felt better after his groom the poor fur ball.

Not an unpopular comment/opinion in these parts.
Vanessa mentioned that the owners planned to groom Winter themselves (hopefully that includes Snow as well…) and that Snow had had surgery so possible reason why he looked like that, except 7 months is a long time and they still should have been brushing him as much as possible at home after the surgery.

@@rangerlove7 I hope so too but they haven't done it so far and he is an old boy now, he'd also benefit from having those teeth out for a start, his mouth must be so painful the poor little guy! Sorry to harp on but I felt really bad for this little guy, Vanessa could see how bad his teeth were and yeah just brushing would have helped him so much.

I have a Maltese and a mini schnauzer so both dogs are high maintenance and lot of upkeep so i do get lazy too at times bc both need regular grooming and teeth brushed so I know it’s a lot of work!, But now worried for the puppy will end up like Snow if same Owners do not keep up with her grooming, if u cannot take on the responsibilities of a high maintenance dog like a Maltese please reconsider 🙏🏼👍🏼🐶

Yeah I don't understand why the owners would get another Maltese when they can't keep up with brushing the first one

    • @johns80schick
      @johns80schick 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

Yea, they clearly are overwhelmed by the maintenance of their first maltese dog, so why get another. And for those who say it's so expensive that's another reason to not get another maltese. We have to be responsible about pet ownership.

I have had 5 Malteases they need to be groomed every 6-8 weeks! What is wrong with people? These dogs are high maintenance dogs brush them 3-4 times a week in between groomings also! Maybe you could teach these things to the owners so the dogs don’t suffer!

Snow looks so much like my Apple who passed away in 2022. He was a shih tzu & Maltese mix. I didn't realize how much work his coat needed to keep it from being matted, and I really could have done better.
