    My buddy Nick from Growing Back To Eden and I are building a new chicken coop at the farm this week! The chickens will begin stirring and processing our farm's compost at lightening speed saving us a whole lot of work. This is a no-clean or deep litter style coop that only needs to be cleaned once or twice a year. It keeps our chickens safe from predators, keeps rats to a minimum, and kickstarts the breakdown process of wood chips for our Back to Eden Organic garden. The chickens turn the compost into rich, beautiful soil while maintaining a diverse, protein rich diet and staying very clean and healthy.

    That is a good plan. I kept my compost pile near the coop so when I let them out they would tear the pile down and when they went back into the coop I would take it back into a pile again. I got some of the best compost that way.

    Chickens are so cool! I love ours. Sometimes when I can sit outside in the sun and read all 8 of them plus rooster all sit behind me, two cats, beneath the chaiselounge, and our Lab not far. Incredible how our cats(all outdoor rodent eaters don't bother them.) Oh yes, and I named our big rooster, "Harvey," for ubvious reasons...cheers...rr from Normandy

    My neighbor has about 25 chickens as laying hens and the coup is about 30 foot from my driveway to my shop. I like to sit and watch them at the end of the day sometimes. Their like watching a yard sprinkler or bug zapper.....relaxing......and I get my eggs cheap! So, once again, I find my finger atop the like button.

    I have been told to get my butt into it but I have not taken them literally the way you did at 6:29. I found it amusing. I presume you are going to provide an elevated roosting platform in addition to nesting area for egg laying.
    I live in a forested and somewhat rural area. Down the road a sign went up saying, "Fresh eggs for sale". That stayed there for about a month, but then it was replaced by a sign which said, "Chickens for sale".

    @04:31 Why can't you use windows netting to prevent flies and larger bugs and predators out? Adding that netting is something I would do.

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Satobatsu Kaiba feel free to do so on your coop. The open door directly under the rafters makes any kind of overhead netting pointless. Window netting will not keep out predators out either, but, as explained in the video, that is also not an issue here due to our multiple species of flock guardians- guinea fowl, geese, and roosters inside the pen, donkeys, llama and alpaca directly outside the pen.

    Hi Anne. I use to build metal buildings. When we used a circular saw to cut the aluminum we would put the blade on backwards which made good cuts. Are you doing that with your saw? Great video. Great build.

    • @jeremyspecce
      @jeremyspecce 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      dale jones I think that's steel roofing, no?

    • @dalejones4186
      @dalejones4186 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jeremy. You are correct. It looked like galvanized steel. It would work on it also because the cutting tips of good saw blades are carbide tipped which will cut steel sheeting. Running the blade backwards gives less of a chance to catch when cutting. Great video. I would love to see my kids doing these kind of things. Thanks for sharing.

    • @AnneofAllTrades

    We recently moved out from the city to the country side. Building a chicken coop is next on our list. This system you're doing, is there any chance that rodents or other big critters will try to eat the eggs? This might be a dumb question 😬. Idk much of what rodents (rats/mice) eat

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You will definitely want to insulate the chickens from predators and rodents if you don't have an outside plan for dealing with them, as chickens tend to attract both en masse.
