Was so amazing to see Rescue 5 pass you on your boat ride. Until last year I was one of the Rescue Coxswain’s who commanded Rescue 5. Brilliant rescue craft and a very interesting story how such modern vessels are now operated by Sea Rescue South Africa.
After almost 30 years as a volunteer I have quite a few stories I could tell. One of the last times I took Rescue 5 to sea was at night in a howling North Easter and literally drove the boat on feel. The sea was punishing that night but she handled the conditions exceptionally well. If you are ever in Durban again I could arrange a tour of the station and Rescue 5.

Durban is where I was born in 1982. Raised and lived there until age 35. Got married there, both my daughters born there in 2004 and 2006. We now live in Gold Coast, Queensland Australia for the past 5yrs. Watching your videos made us homesick. We LOVE Australia and everything it offers, it's our new home... but Durban will always be our "HOME" if you know what I mean. Thank you for sharing guys, lots of love, the Britz family.

Wow, the views overlooking Durban from your room are beautiful, great value for money! The night time views from Roma were the best though, we love dinner with a view like that, especially when it rotates. Great video enjoying the old style of Durban, Happy Birthday Chantelle! 🥳
Hi Craig and Chantz. I'm a former Durbanite and I found your channel a few weeks back. I love the durban and KZN videos, this video takes me back to when I was a teenager and used to go to the museum over 25 years ago. Keep up the great content. Thanks
Hi June 👋 Can’t believe your son was the manager there...the Royal Hotel must’ve been amazing in its prime 🥰 Hope all is well in Denmark 😊 Let us know if there are any specific areas that you would like to see in our videos 🙂
Your son being an ex manager and the Royal being my 2nd home in 1980-1990's, seems they have spent very little to upgrade in the last 40 years, be interested to know what your son thinks based on this vid ? I have long since left Durban in 1997 and was astonished, even the rooms have the same chairs !
As a former Durbanite, your videos always bring me a sense of warm nostalgia. It was nice to see a bit of the city again and the museum, I too haven’t been in the museum for over 30 years. Keep up the great work. Can’t wait to visit Durban again.
Thanks so much for your video. I grew up in Durban and moved to Cape Town in my 40's in 1992. Been to many of your places and so enjoyed being there with you.
You guys are incredible... Your content on Durban really brings back that "nostalgic Durban flavour" that I so dearly miss. Keep it coming! and Be safe😊

Botswana. But I'm a beach girl through and through. Born in Empangeni. Mom stays in Mtwalume. And my heart is at the beach and KZN is my favorite place in the whole world.
You're making me want to visit Durban! First off - the weather there looks great. Secondly, there seems to be so much to see and do. Your hotel seemed very comfortable and located in a great spot. I love that the city is waterfront and cool to see the cruise ships visit there. Your dinner looked so yummy!! I love Italian food - so I would have probably had the lasagna too. So sad you lost your hat!! It was so cute.
Wow a revolving restaurant is definitely on our to do list! That looks like such an amazing experience! Glad you could celebrate your birthday in style Chantz! We love boat tours too! The best way to end any trip!
I really like how the municipality and private business people are investing in the harbour and point to make it a tourism friendly place unlike the 2000s and early 2010s
I love your content. I'm a Durbanite but no longer live there. This video was so informative and showed me new places to see on my next visit. Keep up the good work
Wow, seems like a very popular hotel in Durban, impressive that even Queen Elizabeth stayed in there! Love the revolving restaurant, we were in one of them in Sydney and had a great time! The food is looking so good so are the views from up there! Boat tour looks so much fun too!
Loved your look at the musum. I and my friends spent many hours, many days there as kids when we were in highschool. A fantastic museum. I heard that one of the previous directors, Clancy, I think his name was did the paintings for the backgrounds to the exhibits. I believe that he took inspiration from the American Museum of Natural History in New York. We used to park in the Royal Parking whenever we went to concerts in the City hall with the Durban Symphony Orchestra (long time ago) and then the Natal Philharmonic. Ate at the Royal Grill as well. I remember my parents talking about what a pity it was that the original Royal Hotel, very much a Victorian Colonial structure, was demolished to make way for the current High Rise. I lived in Durban for 32 years but only made it out on a harbor cruise once, on the old Sarie Marais, and never did make it to the Revolving Restaurant unfortunately. By the way. The art museum above the Science Museum was supposed to have acquired either a painting by Constable or Turner back either in the late 70's or early 80's. I remember going there with a friend of mine to try and find it but despite a bunch of signs ostensibly point to it it wasnt' there. Perhaps if you ever go back in future you can ask about it.
Hi, thanks so much for watching. The Royal Hotel is completely different to the old photos we've seen (on the Durban Down Memory Lane Facebook group). But we still got that 'stepping back in time' feeling. It must've been so nice going to concerts in City Hall, the building is so beautiful!
Wow thanks for this all places on our checklist to go to that we just couldn't go to and we weren't even sure if these places were open but we so wanted to check them out thank you again
Great vidoe! Please do a video on other places in the larger Durban area, like an overnight stay in Karkloof, etc. ... things that are really just 30-45 minute from your home but feels like taking a holiday!
I've lived in Durban my entire life and drive through these streets everyday and this video just made me wanna tour Durban 🤣🤣🤣 last time I was at the museum I was 13🙈

Thanks so much for saying that, that’s a huge compliment for us 🤗 Can’t believe you’re so close to the Royal! If we were so close, we’d go to the bar on the bottom floor every weekend 😅
Being a Durbanite and embarrassingly only visiting the Roma in December 2021 I have to agree the experience was amazing but seeing the inside of the Royal Hotel... Is making me want to book a room and experience that for the first time. Thanks for this vid
Thanks so much for watching...never too late to visit the Roma 😊 It really felt like we went back in time at the Royal...it was our first time there and have only heard stories from our parents about how they used to hang out at the rooftop bar 😅 (which sadly isn’t there anymore). If you do stay there...just be ready for some wear and tear and as we said some noises (I always travel with earplugs, so wasn’t too bad 😅)

Hey guys, watching your experiences makes us want to visit Durban 😍 the views from the rotating restaurant are amazing. And wow all of the food looked delicious, we would want to try both the bisque and chowder..yum. How cool they have dishes that can be prepared in front of the table ❤️ The harbor cruise looked fun 😁 but RIP Chantz's hat!
Hi guys, just watched your vid with some interest..!! Originally from Umhlanga, I'm now living in Strand, Cape Town. Myself and a guy called Delroy worked for Paul Molle' Assoc. the Interior Design Studio responsible for the original revamp of the Royal Hotel. The Client at the time was Russell Steven's. It still looks pretty much as it did back then, early 80's if memory serves me correctly. I was personally responsible for the interior design of the Exchange Bar. We used to frequent the Roma in those days..!! It seems as though the menu is still the same...!! Wilson's Wharf is named after an old friend of mine (John Wilson) who ran his shopfitting business from those premises. Thank you both for a super presentation, makes me a little heartsore ❤ btw. I'm still an ardent *SHARKS* supporter..!!
Nice one. Be sure to check out Cool Runnings drumming circle on Thursday nights. I wish more people would go out more often and take back the streets. Durban has so much potential
@@BeingBedingfield 49 Milne St, Durban Central. I just hope lockdown hasn't affected it too much, but have a look. Also Monday night karaoke at Villin's pub in Glenwood Village on the Berea.
I remember back in the 90s when a classmate asked me, how was Roma Revolting 😂😂😂. Was a kid back then and used to go to Roma often with my parents. Haven't been to Durban for 20 years.. so nostalgic 😢
We know not everyone likes the Roma, but we've only ever had great experiences :) Thanks so much for watching, glad we could bring a little bit of Durbz to your screen :)
I was born in DUrban in 1987 but moved to Pretoria in 1990 which is probably where i will stay forever. Havent been to Durbs since 2015 before that i was last there in 2004. The riots in 2021 gave me an extremely bad impression of Durban i thought i would never go back. Feels like the politicians down there dropped the ball especially compared to Cape Town...But this video gave me hope in having faith in my birthtown, maybe i might do an esports tournament there, KZN's gamers need some love to :)
Hi, thanks so much for watching our video. We really love Durban and want to show everyone how beautiful our city is :) I'm sure an esports tournament would be great :)
Good to see Roma restaurant still good at time of filming. Sad you have to drive from Royal Hotel, it should be one of those marvelous walks, but that's the reality of Durban nowadays. It once had a vibrancy to rival Miami. Let's get back there. Perhaps when we can pass the era of destructive politics this much-loved city can thrive again. Great travel-logue and public service.
Thanks so much for watching and for your comment. Agree! We would’ve liked nothing more than to take a walk to the Roma 😢 Durban has sooo much potential!
I visited the same places that you have on the video aside from the musuem just a few days ago. I agree with the views expressed abut the hotel and wilsons wharf particularly about restoring these establishments to its former glory. Clearly whats missing in both these aspects is the absence of critical but honest criticsm.
What other honest criticism you wanted the Bedingfield to express.? Yes, Durban was enchanting 100 years ago when the oppressed owners of the land were "kept" in their place. The glorious days of "white only " beaches and black servants tending to your every needs will never return. Unless the devil himself came down to earth to rule. Poverty is a horrible thing. It breads crime and danger. Only South Africans of all races and good will can bring and end to it. Then you will see a glorious SA where everyone can walk safely anywhere no matter what time of the day or night.
@@chocon8818 I am absolutely confused and very unsure what your rant is all about. Perhaps you may want to explain what you are trying to say that is understandable.

After almost 30 years as a volunteer I have quite a few stories I could tell. One of the last times I took Rescue 5 to sea was at night in a howling North Easter and literally drove the boat on feel. Wow, i worked at the Royal, great memories. Crazy top of the Royal pool. I worked as a barman at the bar
Hey guys, watching your experiences makes us want to visit Durban 😍 the views from the rotating restaurant are amazing. And wow all of the food looked delicious, we would want to try both the bisque and chowder..yum. How cool they have dishes that can be prepared in front of the table ❤️
The harbor cruise looked fun 😁 but RIP Chantz's hat!
Thanks for watching guys! We had such a fun weekend being tourists in our own city 😅
I guess Craig needs to get me another hat now 😂
Hi guys, just watched your vid with some interest..!!
@@BeingBedingfield yes, he definitely needs to get you a new hat 😆

Thanks so much, hope you can make it one day 😊
Nice one. Be sure to check out Cool Runnings drumming circle on Thursday nights. I wish more people would go out more often and take back the streets. Durban has so much potential
That sounds cool! Where is that?

Visited in 2019 as nd fell in love with this city but heard about recent floods so a careful to come again.
...you sound South African...one subscriber added...Proudly South African
Yes, we are proudly South African 😁🇿🇦
Loved all these places when I went there, except for the Royal hotel and Roma revolving restaurant as I still need to go there 😢
Durban does not get recocnized so thank for making this vid😊
Thanks for watching 😊
Please can you make videos about places and towns to live in South Africa for foreigners…need more content like that .. thanks 🙏
Hi, it’s a great idea. We’ll explore your suggestion and see if we can come up with something informative.
Awesome video :)
Thank you 😊
I will go there today for a cruise
13:00 thank you for the positive representation
Aww what about 9th Avenue waterside?
😔 we’ll have to try that out next time!
All the hotels are beat up and dirty in Durban. But the people and food is one of my favorite places in South Africa.
Yeah, renovations are much needed 😌 At least the Royal was clean!
