i'd love to see a video of getting great rock guitar tones. not just micing technique, but also dialing in the settings on amps & pedals etc to get that big 90's distorted guitar sound.
So great seeing this. You’ve got the fancy toys, sure, but it’s still reassuringly simple for us mortals. Got a snare mic question. Don’t know if it’s intentional, but it kinda looks like the top and bottom mics are at kinda 90 to each other. I’ve had a producer tell me to do that for good phase like a decade ago but I don’t think he explained it and I’ve never really seen it done/talked about since. Is that a thing?
How much time are you setting up for the artists before they get there and are they billed for that time and tear down as well? Do you usually leave your routing of your patch bay connected if a band/artist is going to be all week? If you tear down every time, do you use anything to keep track of recall in case the artists want to come back and re-record anything?
I have an assistant who does a fair amount of the setup with me and usually a runner or two so set up for a band takes about an hour two depending on what we are doing. I don’t bill for that cuz I usually bill day rates.
Great video! I’d love to see an uncut video of you in the booth during tracking. I feel like it would give some perspective on your approach with artists and how you manage time.
thanks for this great video. i noticed you have kept the diecast hoops on these gretsch toms. i know it depends on the song but what would be your favorite starting point with this kit: open ambassador and then mufled to taste OR emperor for a more naturally controlled tone ? thanks !
@@drummerpoukI prefer coated ambassadors on this particular kit. Emperors are TOO dead/dark as a starting point for me because of the die cast hoops and the ever so slightly oversized shells. However, I do have coated emperors on my 60s camco and love them.
Haaaa.. I didn't see your answer.. thank you Jake ! and thank you Will ! for making youtube more interesting, sharing all this great knowledge and history of the music.. No youtuber trend bullshit and just real stuff. Much appreciated ! @@JakeReedmusic
My drum studio has 16 channels of pres (8 1073 eq's, 4 Jon Hardy, 4 UA 4-710D) and a pair of distressors I've been using on the room mics. What should be my next outboard gear purchase?
Yo greazy , great to see your on yt! Nice work !! Quick question and I appreciate if it is something you might not know. On John Mayer's album continuum,(2006) the drums on that ..Steve Jordan . Is there a way of attaining that sound as samples ?
@@greazywil lmaooo. Greazy do you think you can make a video on those kick sub mics? are those something that someone can build pretty easily or would you recommend buying one?
“I use the LA3A for a talkback ‘cause that’s all they’re good for.” LOLL
Will, this is AWESOME! Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. You've got a new fan!

I'll add that to the list!
Thanks for the tour! Legendary space.
Great video! Always cool to see the little flavor mics that get added in.
This is dope Wil. Thank you
yes finally. more longform content !
I have a bunch in the making but it just takes soooo long to do and I’m very lazy
i know, editing video's takes a shitload of time. Maybe you could release another TSAR episode in the meantime :S@@greazywil
LA3A catching strays! Awesome video man😂
So awesome, please more videos when possible 🙏🏻
Your content is inspiring me to take on engineering besides the producer/composing stuff I’m already doing, keep up with the great work :)
That’s the goal. If more people learn it they can grow to love it the same way I do
Love it Greazy!

Hell ya. That lang peq has me so intrigued on my quest to find the perfect smacky kick sound.

And if I’m working for multiple days I just leave everything set up. At the end of the day the assistant breaks everything down

Sessions are like 12 hours long 😂 it’d be one hell of a video

Really interesting man, thanks for sharing!
Do you ever have phase issues with the kit or floor mics? If yes, how do you handle it?
would love to see your take on rock toms in tracking and mixing to keep them big and punchy without the excess flub 👌

Fucking Greazy Wil. Next video from the spot formally known as the spot.
I went thru some old videos and pics yesterday. Bro. You don’t want me to go there 😂

So many variables. What kind of music do you make?
Rock and metal mostly!

I dunno. Prolly not
How much time do you spend routing all of that?
10 minutes maybe. Not much. It’s pretty simple even tho it may not look like it
Everytime I mic a high hat it sounds satanic
You gotta stop using the devil loc on it 😈
