    I have been singing this hymn since I was a child. My father taught me to sing it. He's gone to heaven many years ago but his faith still lives with me and in me!

    As noted below, this hymn was written by a Catholic priest, but, oddly, it is considered by many to be a Protestant hymn.

      Faith of Our Fathers (hymn) "Faith of our Fathers" is a Catholic hymn, written in 1849 by Frederick William Faber in memory of the Catholic martyrs from the time of the establishment of the Church of England by Henry VIII and Elizabeth.

      Doesn't the original version end with a verse praying for the conversion of England (to Catholicism?)

    I like the registrations, adventurous. Reeds on the second verse? Cool! I enjoyed the reharmonization too, it was adventurous but totally singable.

    I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (September 9), I played this for Sunday School Assembly. I did so because part of our lesson was taken from Hebrews 11:1-3, 6. To all denominations: If this is your Scripture for the Day, this is a good hymn to compliment it.

    Shocked to find out it's a Catholic hymn! It almost sounds Anglican. Either way, beautiful hymn. I first heard this on an old Bing Crosby Christmas record actually and fell in love with it then. Found out in the past few years that Crosby was a devout Catholic, so found it interesting that he'd include what I thought was an Anglican hymn on his record, but figured he did it for record sales, since most of his audience was protestant. Great to find out it actually is a Catholic hymn :D

    • @christall-in-all3235
      @christall-in-all3235 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well it was written by a convert from Anglicanism. If you look at the lyrics carefully you can see that the "fathers" refereed to are recusant Catholic martyrs of England who held to the ancient faith in spite of their vicious systematic persecution under Elizabeth and others.

    • @listsforthecurious
      @listsforthecurious 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      An Anglicanised version exists in most Anglican hymnals. (One that doesn't include a prayer for the intercession of Mary for the conversion of England to Catholicism.) Interestingly, the alternative tune listed in the Book of Common Praise is MELITA (from Eternal Father Strong to Save). I'd love to hear it set to the alternative tune.

      Our version is a bit more egalitarian and 'broad church.' GIA (whose edition we sing from), omits the following:
      Faith of our fathers! Mary's prayers
      Shall win our country back to thee;
      And from the truth that comes from God,
      England shall then indeed be free.
      Faith of our Fathers, Holy faith!
      We will be true to thee till death.

    "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
    Jesus Christ would seem to indicate that this is doubtful.

    It's good, but why so slow??

    • @dogzles5430
      @dogzles5430 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. It is a little slow for my liking. I changed the tempo in the video to 1.25 and seems to be better with the tempo. They did do great though!

    • @AV8RSam
      @AV8RSam 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the performance is great; I just wonder who chose the tempo. Maybe this was during the offertory--that could explain it.

    • @MarkHusey
      @MarkHusey 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is this speed because I love it this speed. No other explanation required. :) You say "slow." I say "grand."

    • @MarkHusey
      @MarkHusey 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I find hymn tempi to be HIGHLY subjective. In my current position position, the Music Director often conducts the hymns and inevitably I think they are either too fast or too slow. It's a very personal thing. I used to get all bent out of shape about comments on tempi. Now I'm just happy people are listening and sharing. Carry on! :)

    people died for catholicism. but people also died for their protestantism. and in algeria the french beheaded you if you were a muslim refusing to become a catholic.
    now, has anyone written a hymn for them?
    has the r.c. church not made them saints?
    after all, they died for THEIR faiths so must be now residing in heaven.
    don[t say they are not .... THEY ARE.
