Can you change the textures of the cubes?

Yes, and you can also change the cube by something else.
The code is written in Blueprint, so you can totally adapt the effect to the specific needs of your game.

Can I use this in VR

I absolutely don't know, because I don't have VR to test the effect.
What I c say is this effect uses standard Niagara stuff, with many controls options within a Blueprint.
So if standard Niagara system can be used on VR, this effect should also be used on VR without any problem.
