Exactly, the Matrix is tinged with a green mood palette suggestive of the early monochromatic cathode computer monitors that the Wachowski's wanted to create, so audiences could immediately identify where the action was occurring through the use of such a colour scheme. For the Real world on the Neb they tinged the lights with blue.
@@pellyk2022 This demo is running in real time, that's a huge difference compared to CGI in movies where eacch frame takes hours to render. Also, while the matrix used CGI, it wasn't completely animated like this demo. Technology has come very far in the last 20 years.
There was a team that showed this kind of lighting based on AI algorithms with GTA5 last year. This looks eerily similar. Anyways there could be some incredible open world games this generation, that's for sure.

Photo realism I agree. Physics - no. The car chases look incredibly cringy. Just like latest F&F movie stunts. It's impossible even with current generation supercomputers to generate physical destruction on this level. The way every pane of glass cracks, every metal part bends and every drop of petrol ignites is on a molecular level.

No joke this looks insane and beautiful and using the Matrix for this reveal was a genius idea. Games sure have come a long way from being tiny 8 bit pixels on screens in the past to full photo realistic movie looking in the present.
@@LetHerWar it's in the eyes. Something about their eyes feels fake. Like they're always staring in the same direction. Humans are always blinking and looking around in different directions with their eyes.
@@djp1234 Yeah i did notice that too in a normal human we usually move our eyes move with how our head but here it just stays in the same direction. Nice lookout
definitely something about the facial animations seemed most noticably off, games like Red Dead Redemption 2, or Cyberpunk where they seem to have incredibly detailed mocap really bridges the uncanny valley quite a bit better.
Computing power was still a bit of hindrance for that last console gen but the biggest bottleneck was data streaming in form of HDD. It was really time that consoles now also use flash storage.
I think the PS5 and Xbox Series X are now capable of rendering the 100 Agent Smith battle in real-time looking more photorealistic than it ever was in The Matrix Reloaded movie. Time sure flies.
It’s the fractal like nature of the detail that gets me. EVERYTHING is immaculately detailed and hi res, from a discarded packet of chips, to a fire hydrant, is like a 4K photo scan high quality asset. And there is a downtown LA’s amount of it on screen at once

The graphics here are mindblowing, but I didn't expect to be so moved at Keanu and Carrie talking about how they miss the younger versions of themselves.
Props to the Unreal team for an unbelievable demo. I hope AAA titles are taking notice of this engine and the great response and excitement it's receiving from the public.

The engine is great the only reason for not using it would be that you have to pay if you're bigger than 1 mio yearly or something like that, which kind of categorically sorts out AAA games.

I love that they seem to have made the inside of buildings detailed in 3d. So… the clarity looking through the windows no longer looks like 2d “flat” or hazy image. It makes a big difference.
Not a new trick, TBH. A lot of devs are faking it in UE4 already, but watching all this I'm getting the feeling that most of the UE5 capabilities are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The ability to handle more of the stuff we already have instead of apparent gamechangers.

@@holoduke51a i was referring to lumen not working on ps4 due to the cost, i know its global illumination, idk what your response was trying to imply, also the matrix experience is using lumen and nanite, you have no idea what you are talking about. I have extensive experience with ue4 and ue5, I was stating through my testing the generation and fidelity of the assets should be possible on ps4 using nanite, but was noting the lighting wouldnt be the same as ps4 likely would be unable to utilize lumen. You should really do some research into topics before commenting nonsense.
Impressive, although the introduction was meant to trick our eyes the difference in transition between the real Keanu and computer generated one is still easily noticeable. We are getting closer to the realism when it comes to environments and lighting, but we are not quite there yet regarding the actual people.
it is called the uncanny valley. the more realistic the renderings get, the more our bullshit radars go off. They could actually make this photorealistic by applying a filter and running it at a lower resolution.
I noticed that too. And as good as it gets, unfortunately there's still some catching up to do. Shadows cast by bypassers on the street ( 9:30 and on) are not what you'd expect in real life. Yet. There are still the obvious performance limitations put up by the hardware that will render those scenes for us end customers. You can develop it all you want to perfection on a render farm. You'll still be limited by what hardware offerings your customer will have at hand. Congratulations to all of the UE5, movie studios and console manufacturers staff anyway. They've brought The Matrix one step closer to dislodging reality.

Older Keanu is not real, but then camera moves to keanu in mirror and then he is real again, after that he is not the real keanu. CGI will never fool me, its all in the eyes (you can’t fake real eyes and star), also facial muscle movements, skin texture, body movement, hair flow. I don’t know but I see it right away
I love how the game takes place in the 90s and it shows, they could've easily made the entire thing in a generic open world scenario just like in any other game, but this one does look like the classic movie.
In this era of magnificent games' remakes, The Matrix: Path of Neo should be remade with this engine. Such an incredible masterpiece it was. Covered the whole main trilogy in an exemplary manner.
I'm almost annoyed at how well this was made. Script is solid, direction is great, graphics are obviously incredible... Well done.

Don't be naive, this is not real time. It's an on-the-rails pre-made techdemo, you will not be able to move around freely. Anyone with gamedesign experience will immediately recognize how scripted and "videogamy" this is.
@@GordonSeal is real-time, is just neither good gameplay nor good looking, the destruction simulation, lighting and verify geometry looks amazing the few m first few times, but it falls apart quickly when you realise it's not consistently that good looking.
It‘s actually not a Trailer. It‘s more of a playable Demo and in-game footage. My jaw was on the floor all the time, when I played it and in the end, you can speed through the town like a drone and I felt like Spiderman, blazing through the streets in real time. Rocksolid graphics (and audio) - INSANE. Unreal.
It's actually a playable tech demo. Not much real gameplay here, sadly... They're really just showcasing the improvements to the engine, clothed in a Matrix wrapper.
@@AndrewPace77 Well, I guess the mots important point here is, it is not pre-rendered footage, but all „in-game“ (or „in-tech demo“) graphics. That alone is stunning enough for me to see it happen on a Game console. Maybe it‘s because I started gaming on an Atari 2600.
Hate to be that guy, but it would be nice if they put that much energy into the gameplay. But thats just too risky for game publishers, because graphics like that are too expensive, and they have to account for every dollar spend to their public shareholders.
@@termitreter6545 Yeah its lots of money and work. I'm sure a few will invent something new to make better graphics easier and faster, more ffp. I love high ffp per sec because it moves the graphics so much better and makes it look more alive. Performance is also important.
@@masterjay4992 Yeh, I found that high framerate does a lot to improve how good visuals feel. Doesnt need to be 144fps, but even 90fps feel way better than 60fps. Btw, Ive tried the PC version of that "free roam city scape" thing, and it ran surprisingly well. Kept 60-90fps for most of it, although there was some loading stutter. Thats with RX 6600 XT and I5 12400F

I love this, but at the same time its reaching an incredible level of uncanny valley for me, where it's SOOO close to being real but all the tiny things throw me off. Can't wait to see where it goes!
This is some of the best graphics we’ve seen but it still has that uncanny valley to the models. Still, this looks so damn good and the in game graphics look remarkable.
skin stretching and muscle movement looks a bit jerky, look at Carrie-Anne's eyelids when she introduces herself. This is just a demo though, they do mention variable levels of rendering.
these graphics combined with the advances in vr lenses and resolution will bring at least the visual immersion in games to the fullest in the next couple of decades if not less
It’s because this is based on the Matrix Reloaded’s aesthetics, while The Matrix Resurrections tries and build a different aesthetic, given that the Analyst’s matrix differs from the Architect’s.
Keanu's face is just about perfect, I knew it wasn't actually him but it looks almost exactly like him, i'm excited for the games that come out looking like that
What I really love about this, is all the people in the comments here and various forums saying how it's not that good and they can easily tell the difference between the renders of Keanu and the real footage....only to find out later that there is no "real" footage, that it's all rendered entirely in UE5.

@@williamcll While that could have been available to budgets like the Mandalorian, I’m thinking about the Nanite and Lumen modules in UE5 that are marking the point in time together with Meta human. Plain Jane and Average Joe can now create games in their pyjama’s at home at this insane level of quality.
No this will be the standard in a couple years by the end of the generation they will look slightly better... This is new so everyone is figuring out how to use it and tinker with it... Think assassins creed 4 black flag to what valhalla is today... This sets a new standard on current gen games to come out within the next couple years and then from 2025 and beyond games will look like this and better
I am seriously impressed by what they've managed to shown us so early in the generation, at times the scenery really felt like it was the real thing, the only thing that still gives it away as a game are the character models.
Finally some serious advancement in the gaming industry. I feel like as a kid every new console release was a huge deal and a big step towards greater realism. In the past decade its felt like things have slowed down. We can play games with pretty incredible graphics at super high resolutions but the progression towards creating digital spaces that are indistinguishable from real life is what I've been anticipating since I was a kid.
There's moments in this, I truly thought wow. There's also moments that it became very obvious it was not real footage. Very impressive stuff regardless, can't wait to see this all in action.
@@dumbodum It's actually rather noticeable when they do the transition - pay attention to the skin and the hair. Keanu's real skin is a lot less smooth IMO. His (real) hair also moves a lot less smoothly than his CGI self.

Still noticeable, for sure, but compared to two or three decades ago? Even 5 years ago? Its a monumental step forward. It'll be very interesting to see what happens to this incredible level of detail when the nVidia 4k, 5k or even 6k series hit and we see a few more doublings of power.
Nvidia showed off the Tegra X1 running the Elemental demo before the Switch was announced to use that chip. We now have a report of Nintendo apparently showing off this demo running on the next Switch with DLSS. Curious to see how the first Switch 2 game looks using DLSS
the graphics do look amazing. the gameplay doesn't look modern, but more like gta 3 :) i cringed at the "dodge this" quote in the car too. but definitely the first matrix game i will buy, last time i said to myself, technology isn't good enough for a matrix game :)

I was there from unreals start and their second iteration was still the same kind of low polygon count but then unreal engine 3 came out and that was a huge leap forward in visuals... And a massive hit to everyone's framerate.

Its a shame that modern devs still can't utilize UE5 to this extent. I really thought with the announcement of ue5 that this would be standard for graphical fidelity in gaming..
Many games released now were probably in development in 2020, 2021 without unreal engine 5 features that were released in April 2022. Some games can take 5 years to make, so if they started on day one of UE5 release, their game would be on sale in 2027.
This is as good as movie quality pre-rendered images from not that many years ago. Absolutely mindblowing what's possible now. 10 years time it'll be indistinguishable from reality.
your not kidding. Ive seen hyper hd one psychadelics and it was insane how more colorful it was to the reality I see now. Games and CGI will no doubt replace the natural world. The MAtrix is coming more and more alive and the AI will handle everything
It's always 10 years away. True realism is a lot more difficult than you think, that last 1% is a giant mountain to climb, and then that last .1% is nearly impossible.
Back in 2006 when the PS3 came out, I predicted games would be indistinguishable from reality in about five years' time, or when the PS4 would eventually be released. Fast forward, and the PS4 has under-delivered, in my honest opinion, and this Matrix game is approaching the level that I assumed early PS4 games would look like. I feel like the mountain we're climbing towards photorealism keeps getting taller and taller, and as mentioned above, that last 1% will especially take a long time to overcome. We as humans notice SO many subtle details that we don't even realize. It would be very hard to completely fool ourselves.
When they manage to figure out the eyes, it will be a real fucking problem. Like, even in this demo, when they wear glasses, i barely can tell this is in game. But without them, there is something off about it that instantly makes me know it’s not real.
That's the only thing in this video who make me think " this isn't real", the rest of the video , I can't make the difference between real shot and CGI, very impressive indeed !

This looks straight out of a movie. You can definitely tell at times that things are rendered (some missed ambient occlusion), but in terms of game rendering, this is years ahead everything we have today.
Soon enough we'll be watching movies on VR with realistic 3D actors, with a remastered technology that will remake every signal movie in the history of mankind from 2D to 3D!

For the Real world on the Neb they tinged the lights with blue.

There was a team that showed this kind of lighting based on AI algorithms with GTA5 last year. This looks eerily similar. Anyways there could be some incredible open world games this generation, that's for sure.
Getting there the physics and the photo realism in about 5 - 10 years from now will be so good you probably won’t be able to tell the difference.

Photo realism I agree. Physics - no. The car chases look incredibly cringy. Just like latest F&F movie stunts. It's impossible even with current generation supercomputers to generate physical destruction on this level. The way every pane of glass cracks, every metal part bends and every drop of petrol ignites is on a molecular level.
I feel like I say "this is insane" every 5-7 years or so but this takes the trophy. Unreal.

definitely something about the facial animations seemed most noticably off, games like Red Dead Redemption 2, or Cyberpunk where they seem to have incredibly detailed mocap really bridges the uncanny valley quite a bit better.

The sense of scale is what impressed me. Doesn't look like we are waliking in a miniature of a city like in most games.
It’s the fractal like nature of the detail that gets me. EVERYTHING is immaculately detailed and hi res, from a discarded packet of chips, to a fire hydrant, is like a 4K photo scan high quality asset.

It's actually possible to make actors look younger in post-production, I believe. Probably expensive software, but could be useful.

I love that they seem to have made the inside of buildings detailed in 3d. So… the clarity looking through the windows no longer looks like 2d “flat” or hazy image.

Not a new trick, TBH. A lot of devs are faking it in UE4 already, but watching all this I'm getting the feeling that most of the UE5 capabilities are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The ability to handle more of the stuff we already have instead of apparent gamechangers.

Technically it can be done, using ue5, the lumen lighting system probably not, but nanite should work, and thats what really is the game change.

I have extensive experience with ue4 and ue5, I was stating through my testing the generation and fidelity of the assets should be possible on ps4 using nanite, but was noting the lighting wouldnt be the same as ps4 likely would be unable to utilize lumen. You should really do some research into topics before commenting nonsense.

Impressive, although the introduction was meant to trick our eyes the difference in transition between the real Keanu and computer generated one is still easily noticeable. We are getting closer to the realism when it comes to environments and lighting, but we are not quite there yet regarding the actual people.
it is called the uncanny valley. the more realistic the renderings get, the more our bullshit radars go off. They could actually make this photorealistic by applying a filter and running it at a lower resolution.

Shadows cast by bypassers on the street ( 9:30 and on) are not what you'd expect in real life. Yet.
There are still the obvious performance limitations put up by the hardware that will render those scenes for us end customers. You can develop it all you want to perfection on a render farm. You'll still be limited by what hardware offerings your customer will have at hand.
Congratulations to all of the UE5, movie studios and console manufacturers staff anyway. They've brought The Matrix one step closer to dislodging reality.

I love how the game takes place in the 90s and it shows, they could've easily made the entire thing in a generic open world scenario just like in any other game, but this one does look like the classic movie.

In this era of magnificent games' remakes, The Matrix: Path of Neo should be remade with this engine. Such an incredible masterpiece it was. Covered the whole main trilogy in an exemplary manner.

characters are not yet that realistic, especially on lipsync but hardsurface models and enviroments are super realistic.

It‘s actually not a Trailer. It‘s more of a playable Demo and in-game footage. My jaw was on the floor all the time, when I played it and in the end, you can speed through the town like a drone and I felt like Spiderman, blazing through the streets in real time. Rocksolid graphics (and audio) - INSANE. Unreal.
It's actually a playable tech demo. Not much real gameplay here, sadly... They're really just showcasing the improvements to the engine, clothed in a Matrix wrapper.

@@masterjay4992 Yeh, I found that high framerate does a lot to improve how good visuals feel. Doesnt need to be 144fps, but even 90fps feel way better than 60fps.
Btw, Ive tried the PC version of that "free roam city scape" thing, and it ran surprisingly well. Kept 60-90fps for most of it, although there was some loading stutter.

skin stretching and muscle movement looks a bit jerky, look at Carrie-Anne's eyelids when she introduces herself. This is just a demo though, they do mention variable levels of rendering.

I am seriously impressed by what they've managed to shown us so early in the generation, at times the scenery really felt like it was the real thing, the only thing that still gives it away as a game are the character models.

Finally some serious advancement in the gaming industry. I feel like as a kid every new console release was a huge deal and a big step towards greater realism. In the past decade its felt like things have slowed down. We can play games with pretty incredible graphics at super high resolutions but the progression towards creating digital spaces that are indistinguishable from real life is what I've been anticipating since I was a kid.

@@dumbodum It's actually rather noticeable when they do the transition - pay attention to the skin and the hair. Keanu's real skin is a lot less smooth IMO. His (real) hair also moves a lot less smoothly than his CGI self.

Still noticeable, for sure, but compared to two or three decades ago? Even 5 years ago? Its a monumental step forward. It'll be very interesting to see what happens to this incredible level of detail when the nVidia 4k, 5k or even 6k series hit and we see a few more doublings of power.
Nvidia showed off the Tegra X1 running the Elemental demo before the Switch was announced to use that chip. We now have a report of Nintendo apparently showing off this demo running on the next Switch with DLSS. Curious to see how the first Switch 2 game looks using DLSS

I remember when In 1998 the "Unreal" game was considered to have awesome gfx using unreal engine 1.
Our game engines have come a long way since.
I was there from unreals start and their second iteration was still the same kind of low polygon count but then unreal engine 3 came out and that was a huge leap forward in visuals... And a massive hit to everyone's framerate.
I remember being in the mall and walking past an EB Games and seeing "3d0 soccer" on the TV and thinking "this is as good as it will ever get in terms of graphics"
i still hold unreal in high regard to this day. especially the music, that sound track is better than most commercial music.

Its a shame that modern devs still can't utilize UE5 to this extent. I really thought with the announcement of ue5 that this would be standard for graphical fidelity in gaming..
Many games released now were probably in development in 2020, 2021 without unreal engine 5 features that were released in April 2022. Some games can take 5 years to make, so if they started on day one of UE5 release, their game would be on sale in 2027.
This is as good as movie quality pre-rendered images from not that many years ago. Absolutely mindblowing what's possible now. 10 years time it'll be indistinguishable from reality.

True realism is a lot more difficult than you think, that last 1% is a giant mountain to climb,
and then that last .1% is nearly impossible.
Back in 2006 when the PS3 came out, I predicted games would be indistinguishable from reality in about five years' time, or when the PS4 would eventually be released. Fast forward, and the PS4 has under-delivered, in my honest opinion, and this Matrix game is approaching the level that I assumed early PS4 games would look like. I feel like the mountain we're climbing towards photorealism keeps getting taller and taller, and as mentioned above, that last 1% will especially take a long time to overcome. We as humans notice SO many subtle details that we don't even realize. It would be very hard to completely fool ourselves.

When they manage to figure out the eyes, it will be a real fucking problem. Like, even in this demo, when they wear glasses, i barely can tell this is in game. But without them, there is something off about it that instantly makes me know it’s not real.

This looks straight out of a movie. You can definitely tell at times that things are rendered (some missed ambient occlusion), but in terms of game rendering, this is years ahead everything we have today.
Check out hellblade 2 . It's quite a sight . Absolutely stunning visually .

@@workinggoose401 I'm only 15, and have never tried vr. I'm just saying it's bad because of all the fails that happen. .ie. ppl smashing their tvs. Also, there is a real world. I see vr as just being dangerous technology.
Neural Interfaces will blow "VR" out of the water. Full sensory immersion, no clunky hardware, impaired senses bypassed. Direct brain connection. ...from an actual old man, but opposite argument....LOL
