"Freakin' at the Freaker's Ball!" Many of Dr. Hook's songs from the first two albums were written by children's poet Shel Silverstein, who wrote the classic poetry books "A Light In The Attic," and "Where The Sidewalk Ends." "Carry Me Carrie," and "The Queen Of The Silver Dollar" are also totally representative of the Hook/Silverstein sensibility!

The "Hook" name was inspired by Sawyer's eyepatch and a reference to Captain Hook of the Peter Pan fairy tale, Ray Sawyer had lost his right eye in a near-fatal car crash in Oregon in 1967, and thereafter always wore an eyepatch.

    • @Zundfolge

It was also a play on a hook in a song (a catchy, often repeated verse or chorus that would get the song stuck in your head).

We could SOMETIMES sneak in an episode of the Midnight Special when we were growing up. Of course, i would have to be because of an occasion or something. The thing that made this show stand out was that the bands that performed that night were LIVE. No excuses! As a result, the performance was always different than the studio recording. Made it better.

Ever seen pictures of David Bowie wearing an eyepatch? He needed it briefly for a temporary eye problem, and then liked the style so much, he kept wearing it for a while.

Ray was on a talk show one time and they asked him about his wearing eye make up. He said that when you only had one eye you needed to make it as pretty as possible! 😆
They were the most fun band ever. Record producers killed them when they tried to clean them up for disco. You can see this with the shave and hair cut.

Another track with lyrics alluding to the same kinds sketchy friends being after your woman is 'Backstabbers' by The O'Jays. This track reminds me of a night in the Summer of 1976 when a girl gave me lift home from the club and we ended up outside my place on the back seat with the album this is from on the stereo. Was a good night.

This is from their period when they cleaned up their act...'70's rock band with drug problems who would have thunk it /s. It was a weird dichotomy, their early songs were some of the funniest and most playful such as Cover of The Rolling Stone, Penicillin Penny, Acapulco Goldie, Roland the Roadie and Gertrude the Groupie, Freakin' at the Freakers Ball, and most importantly Get my Rocks Off (not for the faint of heart); and yet some of the most touching love songs Carry Me Carrie, Sylvia's Mother, and Queen of the Silver Dollar. After they cleaned up their act, they found more mainstream success. For this period you can also check out A Little Bit More, If Not You, and for something a little more light hearted, Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk.

The eye-patch guy (Ray Sawyer) lost his eye in a motor vehicle accident and found wearing a glass eye uncomfortable so he opted for the patch. The group's name was influenced by his patch, because it was memorable and the Hook part of the name was based on Capt Hook. A former band mate, George Cummings (the one with the really deep voice in "Cover of Rolling Stone"), came up with the name when the group needed one in a hurry.

You’ve discovered my favorite band. They are the best storytellers, balladeers. But I like the irreverent songs on their first album. You’re going to like two more of these ballads, “Sylvia’s Mother” and “The Cover of The Rolling Stone”.
