The song is a good look at what were considered the big problems in the world in 1971: overpopulation, economic inequality, pollution, war. The writer of the song, Alvin Lee, often said the song remains just as relevant today, despite the passage of time.

They were a British group and actually played Woodstock. The guitarist was Alvin Lee and he was exceptional.

Alvin Lee is the most underrated guitarist in RnR history,imo.
Both him and Terry Kath are never mentioned when it comes to great guitarist,absolutely criminal!

My own opinion has long been that the claim to the title of "most underrated rock guitarist" is a tie between Billy Duffy of The Cult and Ian Thornley of Big Wreck. I’ll make *no* claims here that either of them are the _best,_ just the most _underrated._
However, I have to admit that I had never previously considered Alvin Lee as one who would also fit that same bill. Because he’s just *so damned talented and/or skilled,* it never occurred to me that he could be underrated.
I realize now, though, that the very same principle applies to Ian Thornley, so while I still hold on-narrowly-to my Duffy/Thornley claim, I definitely agree that Alvin Lee is a strong contender as well.

The word "underrated" is used by mistake all throughout TH-cam comments regarding every singer and every song and every guitar player, etc, when what they actually mean is underappreciated. Underrated is the most overused word on TH-cam, I think! And almost always erroneously!!
While on the subject, Leo Lyons was really up there among the greats as well. Often overlooked but just as awesome John Entwistle etc

Ten Years After is one of my Top 5 bands, and Alvin Lee (R.I.P.) was my favorite guitarist. One of the fastest players of all time, Alvin could play any style with his famous "Big Red" Gibson - rock, blues, jazz, rockabilly, etc., etc., he was a master.
Always loved this tune. His guitar has a very 'RICH" sound to me. Not to mention how talented his playing is.
I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it all those years ago...and I still love it today. ♥
Alvin Lee is amazing. His guitar takes me on a musical roller coaster in my mind. I get chills. The words? Who cares. I'm in for the musical journey.
The lyrics of this song is one thing, but you may have missed the greatest guitar solo ever recorded in a studio. Un effin believable.

It's such a different take than what I saw all these years. I always viewed it as inaction, from laziness. She sees everyone doing their own thing, not bothering with each other, to solve the problems. It's an altruistic viewpoint, yet I believe that leaves the door open for a wannabe dictator to walk through.

I saw them in the early 70's at Winterland in S.F. and it was the only concert I'd seen where everyone stood up when the first song started and didn't sit down the whole performance. Totally electrifying band.
Alvin Lee, at Woodstock, literally was shredding on the guitar - in the song 'I'm Going Home', which is really a blues - before shredding was even the word for it.
Alvin Lee is a fantastic guitarist and back in the day, was considered to be the "fastest" player out there. Clapton and Townsend were big fans. Please check out one of his solo cuts, "The Bluest Blues" which also features George Harrison on slide guitar. It's a beautiful, gut wrencher.

Fastest player? Maybe in the late 60's....but very shortly thereafter fusion players like John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola would redefine what fast guitar playing really was.
An iconic song from a time when musical ‘giants’ roamed the earth. As I recall this song was released within a few weeks of LZ IV.

It's an anti-war protest song. At the end it says: *Senators - stop the war.* The lyrics said Us and Them stop the war. Just thought I'd clear up an error.
Ten Years After was a great English Blues Band. Their performance at Woodstock led to the inclusion of "I'm Going Home" in the movie, and one of the most memorable segments of the film. It ends with Alvin Lee hoisting a large watermelon on his shoulder and walking off stage after a rousing gig. True hippie era lyrics, very humanitarian.
R.A. Williams (below) is right! The video of Alvin Lee and Ten Years After doing "I'm Going Home" at Woodstock is amazing and will make you very very grateful that we have You tube so we can savor moments like that.
I was actually standing on the stage where Ten Years After was playing this very song, at my college in New Hampshire, Jan. 1970
it is part of the hippy culture. Stop the War was a reference to the Vietnam war.

Iconic song…one a lot of us can relate to, the feeling of helplessness of witnessing injustices and the mistreatment of others. The superb musicianship and emotive delivery really drives it all home.

SO glad you're checking out Ten Years After. People always forget about them, even though they're one of the key groups of '60s Hard Rock & Blues Rock. Lead singer/guitarist Alvin Lee is way more influential amongst other Rock musicians than his relative lack of mainstream fame would suggest. I usually prefer studio tracks to live ones for reaction purposes, but these guys are an exception. They're absolute monsters on stage.
For me it's about the power of the collective. It's a call for people to unite and come together.
The individual cannot change the world, they can only change themself. But if enough individuals change themselves, the world MUST change as a result.
One of their biggest recordings they never sold millions of albums like some of the groups from the late 60s and 70s but live they were iconic Alvin Lee their guitarist was considered one of the fastest guitarist of the time and their performance at Woodstock made them superstars overnight

Alvin Lee on lead guitar and lead vocals, awesome! When they performed at the original Woodstock Alvin blew our minds with "I'm Going Home".
I'm amazed that neither of these two people even MENTIONED what a great guitarist the guy is in the record even if they didn't know his name. Also, once again, they MISS the meaning of the chorus. "I'd Love to Change the World, but I don't know what to do, so I'll leave it up to you" MEANS that people complain and want change but they rarely ever DO anything about it so they leave it up to the next person. That's what it means.
There are so many great tracks that you can discover with this band. Choo Choo Mama, Rock and Roll Music to the World are brilliant.. and they do the BEST cover of Chuck Berry's Sweet Little 16

@@matthewpaul1111 Problem is that things cannot be placed in perspective anymore these days. The song is like 90 years old, from an era where a young adult woman would still be called a child or girl. If one would go that route and censor this song for it, then one has to be equally strict to the words "Babe" and "Baby". It could also be the song was written from of the mind of a young boy, which is quite realistic. As it seems to be about a young uneducated lower class boy who is after a higher class educated girl. Hence the line "I can be a schoolboy too". All about interpretation.
@@mor4725 But its a grown man singing to a schoolgirl, I wanna ball you all night long repeatedly. And after singing that line the song then goes. "Yes I do child" That can be taken the wrong way and I'm no prude but to me those lyrics are inappropriate and I wouldn't allow someone who sang those lyrics be alone with my 11 year old daughter.

Their performance of "I'm Going Home" at Woodstock (longer version) clearly demonstrates why Alvin Lee is such a baddass guitar player and why rock 'n' roll is truly transformational music!!! I saw them live in 1973 - it made it hard to see any other group match their intensity. Review this performance - it will take you places!!!!

TYA was the first big out of town concert I saw. I was 16 in 1972 and saw them at the Cleveland Public Hall with the opening act Black oak Arkansas.
Saw them in okc same year and ZZ TOP opened for them.... amazing.....

At the time a lot of people were looking at musicians to "have the answers" to any and all of the world's problems. Alvin Lee puts it perfectly, I'd love to help, but I don't know how, so let this inspire all of you to make a change. Another great example of this type of message is I'M JUST A SINGER IN A ROCK & ROLL BAND by The Moody Blues.

You need to do one of their total bangers. One of the great British Blues guitarists of any era.. This song was also an anthem to stop the war but Alvin Lee was not called the fastest fingers for nothing. Do Woodstock Lee next but the stuff before and after is just as good . Super reaction..
This whole album, A Space in Time, is great. Awesome music and the lyrics are full of meaning. Hard Monkeys, about addiction, is a triumph.

I have been listening to this album a space in time for fifty years. A excellent album for context. Every song is more than good. Also an excellent album to learn to play guitar with. Listen to all of it Lex and be that rock star
Something about Ten Years After was a question in the music version of Trivial Pursuit. I had never heard of the band name, and kept calling them Ten Years Later. The thing about Trivial Pursuit though, is that if you play it enough, you can memorize the answers, and get it right the next time the question comes up.
Alright Brad and Lex, you got experience Alvin Lee's guitar. Now, how about 50,000 miles beneath my brain, another of my Ten Years After favorites.
I saw TYA at the Bath Blues Festival late June in 69. The bill included Zepellin but I thought TYA after blew them out the water. About 6 weeks later they played Woodstock and from what I can gather, were one of the best acts. 5 years later, I saw them at our local guildhalll, playing in fron of less than 1000, I guess. Their star was waning.
This is known as TIMELESS! it was relevant then and more relevant today, more than ever.

Alvin Lee and Ten Years Later was the first rock concert I attended in 1975 at Cobo Arena in Detroit. Phenomenal show as the opening act to Bachman-Turner Overdrive. "A Space in Time " album is in my regular listening rotation.
I was probably 5 or 6 years old the first time I heard this on the car radio and remember being completely mesmorized by the sound of the lead guitar. I would never be the same! This is an epic song in such a troubled time. The song itself is timeless!

One of my favourite tracks never tire of listening.
For this song, the feel of its music and the musicianship that produced it is what makes it one of the highlights of its era. I always took the lyrics as different voices listing an array of the day's problems and the message is a lament that each of us shrug our shoulders saying "don't know what to do". So the problems don't get tackled and, years later, we have the same problems getting worse. The beauty of good lyrics is that each of us can interpret in our own way.
One of those perfect songs. Just perfect.
