    For an average man, his clipping technique is above average

    I did both Hardknotts and Wynnose in one day, on a fully loaded touring bike back in 1991 as part of a 2 1/2 month western Europe tour. They are brutal climbs, but fun in a twisted sort of way.

    Where are all the sheep?
    I drove up this the other day, didn't know where I was, just random driving (pick a turn, any turn).
    I had to stop for sheep on the last part, the steepest, and the car stalled when attempting to move again. It took numerous tries to get it moving again and with a strong burning rubber smell coming from the air con.
    Parked at the top and went for a walk on the fell. Going back down in the dark was fun!
    Gorgeous landscape/scenery especially when the sun was going down looking west.

    hardknott is a brutal climb. You did well it nearly killed me when i was a fit 20 year old. I doubt i would get up there in a week now!

    After a weekend in Keswick and following advice from a friend we decided to have a go at the Hardknott pass. However, we were in a Ford Fiesta RS turbo and it struggled to get traction on the first hairpin bends, but we managed it. However, I respected the safety of all cyclists at all times, unlike some folk. If you attempt to these extreme rides they can be both demanding and exhilarating, but just remember if you need medical assistance you need a phone signal and it ain't good is this "neck of the woods" so be careful.

    Get a rim brake road bike buy a Wickworks fitlink front braze on derailleur mount adapter and a Wolftooth Components roadlink rear derailleur extender. Then put a Deore front crankset with 36/22 chainrings and a 11-42 cassette on the back. I run this set up and Im running a short cage derailleur and it works well

    Ive driven this many times, I never envy the cyclists I see. Now I have started enjoying my cycling I have thought it would be fun to give the pass a go on a bike haha!

    I thought the trainer who said you 'failed miserably' was patronising to put it mildly. You got to the top, albeit with a few walks.....I wonder if he could do better, I know I couldn't!

    this climb has nothing on great dun fell

    • @sivelo5021
      @sivelo5021 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Different - Try it with 90 odd miles in the legs on the Fred and it's a quite a prospect

    • @franciss2529
      @franciss2529 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dun Fell is paceable and actually physically possible with average gearing. Hardknott is a completely different story... I almost died on my 36x28 after 50 miles in the legs. Done Hardknott this Spring and going to do Dun Fell in Summer.

    • @sivelo5021
      @sivelo5021 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@franciss2529 Jeez, did it Sunday on the Fred with 36x32. I don't think I'd want to contemplate it with any less gearing. Fair play for getting up on that

      Longer but nowhere near as steep as Hardknott and Hardknott has one of the worst road surfaces I’ve ever been on.

    "Average Man" with sub-average intelligence...
    At least make an effort to get over the cattle grate so you don't taco your wheel!
    And when I hit 20-30% grades, I stand up rather than just ineffectually grind to a halt.
    Why not better gearing to spin more optimally? Is he intentionally trying to trash his first go?

    • @mattparsons6487

      George Hugh couldn’t put it better myself! Who weaves on a cattle grid😂

    • @abcd969696
      @abcd969696 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe because he already was in the lowest gear?

    • @georgehugh3455
      @georgehugh3455 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@abcd969696 - He *knew* the course. Install a *lower* geared cassette _before_ attempting - it's not like we all haven't gone up hills before. He's at 40 rpm on the first ramp.

    • @dunsedog
      @dunsedog 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fair reflection of how an average bloke would cope tbh, it's a brutal climb. Saying that the cattle grid bit was beyond daft.

      @andypandywalters 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe he didn't know any better, since he was a novice. We all have to start/learn from somewhere ! Maybe you could offer him some positive, constructive advice?
