  • In Gloucester, Danny is inspired to do something special for his partner Fran. Single mum-of-four Sophie hopes to set up a dress-making business. In Chesterfield Adam and Leanne plan what to do with their windfall.
Three long-term families dependent on benefits are given a cash handout of 26,000 each, the current maximum yearly benefit cap for most families. In return, the families must agree to sign off benefits, and see if one large cash sum can turn their lives around for good.
The experiment asks the families to use the money in a way that can positively change their circumstances, make them happier and ultimately remove them from the benefit system. However, there are no strings attached and contributors will make their own decisions, spend money as they want but with the knowledge that they've given up their lives on benefits, and there's no more to come.
Will the families be able to grasp this extraordinary opportunity or will the temptations of a large sum of money in their bank account distract them from their good intentions of building a business or finding work?

My mother started her own business after she was made redundant. She started a sandwich business and at first she had a van she used to park next to a couple of local factories. After about 8 month she got a contract to supply sandwiches for 1 of the factories and it started to snowball. She started out just her and my aunty. By the time she retired there was her and my aunty and they had 51 members of staff and 2 shops and a fleet of 5 vans for making deliveries.
I started my business with a £2,500 loan off my uncle and my business partner invested the same. We started just the 2 of us and when we sold up last year we had 18 employees.

The woman who wanted to sell children's clothing smokes. Problems with that habit: the cost, the health problems, the danger she put each child who lived with her in due to second hand smoke, and lastly, everything she sold must absolutely STINK. Because she smokes she can't smell how disgusting it is.
And she didn't start smoking yesterday, meaning for her adult life she's wasted thousands of pounds and the taxpayers (i.e. WORKING people) have had to pay for it.
      Really selfish.

People who have never had jobs in their life need to take responsibility and stop having large amounts of kids. Apart from that I have a forensic science degree but have been out of work for a few years, so even having qualifications doesn't guarantee you a job. My husband works so we don't claim benefits. It's a great opportunity to give them the financial flexibility to do something new. It must be very liberating if any bill coming in usually is a huge threat and a worry.

@@intrepidtomato Free money is always liberating but it has to be taken from someone before you can give it to someone. Would you give me 26 grand? I would feel liberated! At least until it was all spent.

Unrelated: Being an American - while visiting London, UK a few times I've noticed, a much larger percentage of brit's smoke compared to americans. As, I recall wile waking on the streets of london - people smoking don't even turn their faces to avoid the smoke from hitting people walking by. Maybe it has to do with the cold weather?
