  • We meet the people taking part in the second series of the show. Lorraine, a grandmother from Romford is keen to set up a market stall. Southend single parent Donna is also planning to go into business.
    Three long-term families dependent on benefits are given a cash handout of 26,000 each, the current maximum yearly benefit cap for most families. In return, the families must agree to sign off benefits, and see if one large cash sum can turn their lives around for good.
    The experiment asks the families to use the money in a way that can positively change their circumstances, make them happier and ultimately remove them from the benefit system. However, there are no strings attached and contributors will make their own decisions, spend money as they want but with the knowledge that they've given up their lives on benefits, and there's no more to come.
    Will the families be able to grasp this extraordinary opportunity or will the temptations of a large sum of money in their bank account distract them from their good intentions of building a business or finding work?

      This happens only in west. How come people who don't work have great phones, smoke cigarettes, and are living on benefits and have 2 great dogs. And all these people are not even close to skinny. They all are fat, obese (perhaps because not working...). They spent almost whole life on benefits...
      Come see hardworking people in South asian countries, who work 10-15 hours a day. Awful living condition, Insufficient food and the list goes on.

      Yea, "take a 26k worth of a break". And then see what you can do with your life on your own. You must be crazy to think 26k will feed these people for a lifetime, it's just giving them a break. Some people could use a 5-10k break in their life, to fix it. It's a lot of money when you have none.

      A welfare system so generous that a healthy person can live on it all of their adult lives and raise children, is not a safety net. It is a life option. It encourages people to not support themselves. It encourages misery and poverty , while being portrayed as caring and virtuous. If this TV programme's goal is to promote a fundamental rethink of the UK welfare system, then it should be applauded.

    Cant afford a sink. How much are you spending a month on cigarettes....

    • @raninazreen5718
      @raninazreen5718 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I was just about to say the same her house is trash but she got money for cigarettes and of course her daughter is probably living off benefits too. I left school after my exams I didn’t do well as I thought but my first thought was get into collage etc so all available free courses and better myself got volunteering work and had been working in different jobs since 16 and only signed on twice in my life only for few weeks. My last job was in 2011 and I got married started a family. I have 3 kids and I do get support from child tax and child benefit. But I have paid into the system and am just awaiting my youngest to go full time as currently he is only 3 hours morning nursery.
      If I was ever in her position my kids would have basics like food clothing as comfortable house I could afford. Not tablets designer clothes and money for cigarettes.
      In my eyes benefits should be for only the special needs and people with health problems who can’t work physically. I know mental health is a issue but it’s been exploited as depression etc. More needs to be done. I know many family’s both asain and non asain who just sit on benefits.
      My friend was on benefits so I got her off benefits and she is going collage just started her volunteering and I support her finincailly so that she can better her future.
      Personally you should only allow to have kids once you have a job a roof and money.
      There were probably more deserving candidates than this lady she is able bodied but just lazy. I just like to add my husband is working has been doing since we have been married.
      What is the criteria to apply on this show anyway.

    Greetings from California. I'm a single parent and once I went down to social services to see if I could get food stamps ( it's a food assistance program funded by the government). I was working and just needed a little help feeding my growing daughter. Long story short the social worker told me I made TOO MUCH MONEY. I just laughed (to keep from crying) and told her thank you. My maid, a widow ( which is a big deal because most hindu widows don't remarry) raised 3 little daughters single handedly... one is a graduate, one a beautician and the third is on her last leg to getting her set of skills polished up. One daughter is married and another is engaged.. all the households that my maid works for and even the people of the neighbourhood chipped in to give their all to her daughters ... of course my maid deserves all the happiness in the world! she has worked for 10 hours a day... physical hard work... mind you, in India we sweep n swab our floors atleast once a day, everyday.... 99% don't have dishwashers. .. and around 85% don't have washing machines... so she has been swabbing squatting, etc. ..
