Who'd have thought that the iconic Predator design would come from a quick collab on a plane journey by Stan Winston & James Cameron, the guys behind the Alien Queen and an entire Xenomorph hive - years before any AvP connection became commonplace thanks to Dark Horse. Apparently, the original abandoned design was the inspiration for the River Monster seen in the 3rd movie PREDATORS.
It's John McTiernan who never gets the props for the design. He's the one who came up with the retrofuture Massai warrior look when he showed Stan Winston an illustration of what he wanted.
This is why Dark Horse comics is the best and has been keeping the Alien, Predator and AvP universes alive. They have such talented and underrated artists and writers. Bravo once more DH and you as well AT for giving the fans a place to go.
David Quezada an ideal situation would be to bring in the creative minds at DH and the authors at titan books. If they could collaborate and pen a script or even a hard R tv show, with Disney’s finances, that would be epic. Sadly we will never get that and we’re just waiting for the other shoe to drop to see what mistake they make first.
I've heard that James Cameron just happened to be on the plane with Stan Winston when he was returning from Europe to help out the film. Winston had his sketchbook out, trying to come up with some ideas and Cameron suggested something with mandibles. Click!

I read the novelization before I saw the film. In the original screenplay, the alien literally uses the jungle, the alien puts his consciousness into the vines and trees. In one scene, vines and trees controlled by the alien attack one of the men. At the end of the story, Dutch picks up an alien energy spear that the alien had left in the jungle, throws the spear through an open door on the spaceship, and blows up the ship with the alien hunter inside it ( no suicide wrist gauntlets for the alien).
instead of reinventing the wheel, they should just try inventing something new. the universe is big enough and it'd be a terrible shame if the Yautja built this elaborate hunting society with nothing to hunt save Xenomorphs and Colonial Marines.
I actually thought the og predator design looked neat in its own way, though its certainly nothing in comparison to what we got in the film i’d love to see what they do with it in the comic. Although from the cover of the issue it still seems like they’re not sticking with that design unfortunately.
Also because he wasn't going to be using his martial arts and his face wasn't going to be seen but yeah the suit was killing him in that jungle heat down in Mexico...
He said in an interview that the final straw was they wanted him to jump out of a tree wearing the costume (which had stilt-like feet). He refused and another stuntman (that's what JC was at the time) attempted it and hurt himself forcing them to halt production and do the redesign.
I actually really like this design, especially with how organic it appears compared to the heavily technological focus predators are, it definitely feels unique and I really wouldn’t mind it being added to the universe, like a separate potentially rival hunting species perhaps. Just imagine that mantis man sprinting around and jumping from trees using today’s CGI technology, it would be awesome. Or at least give me a figure of this design or something idk

If you look into the alpha predator lore, that design was actually brought into the universe as the Predator race’ first real enemy who was in control of their planet. My kids and I collect the figures which have backstories and the new predator game backs this up as well. In all, there is SO MUCH that can be done. Humans don’t even need to be in the movie lol
Seeing the original design and the original script then comparing the actual released version will give everyone a better understanding of just how amazing McTiernan was at directing and Winston was a creator design. This is also a perfect example of then and now. Mctiernan was not going to take a bad monster design and just run with it. We need more directors like this because this new generation will just run with what they are given without caring if it will be a good film but will waste tens of millions dollars and blame the fans for not appreciating their art. Read the "Hunter" script a few days ago. Really fun and in the screenplay you have the ship and instead of shoulder canon, the hunter is using a large pistol that shoots plasma and darts. Dutch grabs the hunters pistolo and shoots down the spaceship.
OG Predator design looks a bit like the aliens from "District 9", except with a less obviously crustacean head - I wonder if the same production designers worked on those two films
It's also worth noting that James Cameron was traveling with Stan Winston on the flight when Winston was working on the new designs and it was he who suggested to Stan to create something with mandibles for jaws.
I could imagine the original design being resurrected in a future Predator movie sort of minor antagonist before the real Predator dramatically reveals himself as the "bigger fish" and kills it.
i think the idea of putting alternate screenplays in comic book form is a great idea. i read the dark horse gibson ALIEN 3 and liked it better than the filmed version!

Truth to be told, almost every draft of the script presents a different-looking hunter: in one of them, it is very similar to a gaunt, pale man with a network of veins visible through its thin skin. In the novelization (based on an older draft), it is actually able to shape-shift, control animals, and even turn into wind! Its motives also changed: in some versions, it is a scientist tearing humans apart in order to understand how they function. Thankfully they eventually settled everted to the idea of an alien on a safari, which is very simple and, when you really think about it, scarier.
It's been common in comics you have different runs of a series where different artists take the established character in new directions. The many different Batman versions is a good example. I'm ready to see what different creative teams can do with the Predator concept. Obviously, it wouldn't fit amongst the canon material, but it doesn't have to disrespect the originals to try a different way.

I am surprised that the script Predator design on the comic book cover art looks nothing like the Van Damme "Hunter" design that was abandoned in the movie. NECA Toys have blended the "Hunter" predator design with the movie Predator in their Alpha Predator figure, with an insect-like mask. It might have been nice to see a similar nod to the Van Damme "Hunter" design. Because the script Predator comic book design is completely new, I wouldn't be surprised if NECA made a variant Predator based on that, as well.

Any updates on when the comic is going to come out? It didn't come out in June as scheduled, like Alien: The Original Screenplay it seemed to get delayed. The comic hasn't appeared in Dark Horse solicitations for September-October either.
At this point it may be nearly impossible to find a group of 50 or so action/thriller/horror movie fans that have never seen the predator we know and love. But if we could, and there was a finished version of the original film with the JCvD Hunter, it would be fun and interesting to show that version to the group. They would be unbiased from the decades of exposure we all have to the actual predator, and could give pure feedback and reviews of a karate chopping, kick boxing agile Hunter with more scenes in the ship and orange blood. Maybe I'm wierd, but it would be fun to me. (I don't mean the version of the movie would be fun necessary. I mean the reactions of our fantasy group)

Also why couldn't they retain rights? I'm not big on the legality but when films revert back to owners or bought out, essentially contracts have to become finished expire before the new company can move in when there is existing projects in active development. Wouldn't have that been the case here???
I always kind of thought of the Predators as Mainstream ripoff of the Psychlos of Battlefield Earth but on steroids. The Lore I remember was that an advanced race found their home world, the Predators defeated them and stole their tech and used it to expand almost like the Borg. Absorbing technology, enslaving the survivors. Fortunately Predator didn't have John Travolta & Forest Whitaker representing the franchise on film.
Predator from 1987 is a perfection of a movie!! the redisigne of the predator make it more frightened than the original. I watched the movie when I was about 8 years old in the early 90´s and still today 4 me is this the best movie that I ever saw. I go now near 40 years old, I became a muay thai trainer and fought against strong guys in the gym, but the predator still hunting me in my dreams and have a kind of frighting against him. So YES Jim and John Thomas do a very good job with her movie!!! I prefer the Wingston design!
I think either one idea of the creature designs would have been great. I just wonder why the orange costume was used instead of green or blue. I do know with chromakeyer you can use any color. So, maybe that is why they were doing that. I really do not know because when doing a film, a lot is discovered when attempting to make the film. The film is either made or broke when in the filming process. You'd think that would be in the prep for filming or in the phase before filming. That way one can determine if the film can even be made. But that is usually where the problems are discovered. No amount of work before filming is enough to determine if the film can be filmed before hand. That is the problem.
These are really cool ideas that sadly seem to be born out of (pun intended) not having any decent enough follow up films, to fill the galaxy sized hole in the hearts of the fans.
Sucks that Dark Horse Comics cancelled this comics due to Disney buying the Alien and Predator franchise and gave it to Marvel Comics 😞. Hopefully Marvel will release through them.

Also why couldn't they retain rights? I'm not big on the legality but when films revert back to owners or bought out, essentially contracts have to become finished expire before the new company can move in when there is existing projects in active development. Wouldn't have that been the case here???

I always kind of thought of the Predators as Mainstream ripoff of the Psychlos of Battlefield Earth but on steroids. The Lore I remember was that an advanced race found their home world, the Predators defeated them and stole their tech and used it to expand almost like the Borg. Absorbing technology, enslaving the survivors. Fortunately Predator didn't have John Travolta & Forest Whitaker representing the franchise on film.
The original hunter looks like the covenant soldiers in the halo games. The one that's playable in the halo 3 campaign. Idk what they are called.

Predator from 1987 is a perfection of a movie!! the redisigne of the predator make it more frightened than the original. I watched the movie when I was about 8 years old in the early 90´s and still today 4 me is this the best movie that I ever saw. I go now near 40 years old, I became a muay thai trainer and fought against strong guys in the gym, but the predator still hunting me in my dreams and have a kind of frighting against him. So YES Jim and John Thomas do a very good job with her movie!!! I prefer the Wingston design!
I think either one idea of the creature designs would have been great. I just wonder why the orange costume was used instead of green or blue. I do know with chromakeyer you can use any color. So, maybe that is why they were doing that. I really do not know because when doing a film, a lot is discovered when attempting to make the film. The film is either made or broke when in the filming process. You'd think that would be in the prep for filming or in the phase before filming. That way one can determine if the film can even be made. But that is usually where the problems are discovered. No amount of work before filming is enough to determine if the film can be filmed before hand. That is the problem.
These are really cool ideas that sadly seem to be born out of (pun intended) not having any decent enough follow up films, to fill the galaxy sized hole in the hearts of the fans.
They where smart about changing the Alies look and changing the name to Predator.

Sucks that Dark Horse Comics cancelled this comics due to Disney buying the Alien and Predator franchise and gave it to Marvel Comics 😞. Hopefully Marvel will release through them.
