For their entire childhood, the Angulo brothers had only one true escape from their lives confined inside their family’s New York City apartment.
“As far back as I can remember anything -- like, as far back as I can remember loving my mom -- I remember movies,” Narayana Angulo, 22, told ABC News’ “20/20.” “They were like a door into another world."
Watching movies was the one privilege, the brothers said, that their father allowed.
“The movies taught us like, sort of how to speak to one another, how you interact with another person and have an opinion,” Mukunda Angulo, 20, told “20/20.”

What really saved them was the fact that there was so many of them, and their constant movie entertainment - all of them playing and interacting with each other - and still capturing some semblance of the outside world and learning and observing (at least from a distance) social norms - mitigated the typical damage of indoor neglect. Also the mother seems to have kept the damage at bay as well.
All these factors make it more like they lived on an island. And its a good thing they escaped as young as the are. Sooner would've been better. But better late than never. The longer the waited the more damage that would have been done. And the more permanent it would have been.

The boys have so much love for their mother and you can see how badly it hurt them knowing the rules her mother had herself and how she was treated. They get to start living their lives and do it together which is so cool to see. I cried when I saw the mother getting to talk to her family in one of the videos.

1,000 sq for nine people is not huge. A normal 2 bedrooms apt is usually 1,000 sq. So these rooms and baths were tiny, specially taking in consideration that they were not allowed on the living room nor one of the bedrooms so they probably had access to only 750 sq. For a total of 9 people. That's about a 1 bedroom apt.

    • @RusBerry

Mayelli Pryor Yes, Your absolutely correct. NYC projects have very small rooms. Bedrooms fit full size bed, chest and dresser and very little room to walk. The law was two persons per bedroom. Six room apartment means they had three bedrooms. Then they weren’t allowed in the rooms where the walls connected with the neighbors. Understandable, since he was hiding them, because you can hear everything that goes on in the neighbors apartment. I know I lived in NYC housing.
