    A most excellent lesson Orchid Ninja Nina...👍🏻 It's definitely turned cool here, and some rain!!🎉, I even hear a light dusting of snow at the higher elevations. 😅
    I'm seeing signs of new growth on several my little ones. Many of my cooler preferring orchids should be blooming in the next month or so. 💕 I trust you are behaving yourself and having a great saturday....later Nina..👋

    Hi Nina, thank you this was helpful (as all my g your videos are, you are an orchid angel)
    Temperature here is already below 20 at night, summer didn’t really do much this year in the Uk . I find myself feeling strangely somber at this time of year. I grow my orchids in the house as I have a garden that’s got too many plants in it already.
    But I start to see the evenings draw in & the garden slow down. It’s not long till it’s time to put the garden to bed for another year. It’s both beautiful & sad all at once.
    Luckily loads of orchids bloom in winter to soften the blow if the cold season to come .

      HI Holly 😍💐thank you so so much for your kind comment and your feedback on the content of my videos, I truly appreciate you 🫶🏼 I get somber this time of year as well and I really fight to live in the moment, because 'we are not there yet', but yes...as August comes to an end, I am not as happy go lucky as I am in April, that is for sure! I love preparing my orchids for the glamcamping season ahead...but having to prepare them for the winter conditions is not as fun 🥲 hopefully, we will get through the winter 'together' and keep each other as upbeat as possible. I hope you had a wonderful Sunday, a wonderful weekend as a whole and thank you so much for your support here, and for watching 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    Hi Nina, thank you for this video 😊. Fall is coming for me in a month or so that's when I start my spray schedule. I keep Bout 150 orchids outside that can tolerate cooler nights. All indoor plants are brought outside to the screen room for feeding. At that time they'll get banrot, fungal, bacterial, and insect spray. I just had several nights in the mid 50s F and had to bring several orchids inside. Thank you for the reminder fall brings many changes. Now I have to find places inside for the orchids outside, did I buy to many in the summer you bet . Much fun.❤😂🎉😅😊

      🌸🥷🏼 Bob San, Hi 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 it is so good to see you 🫶🏼 your collection could not be in better hands... if I could choose a grower that I want to be grown by after being reincarnated as an orchid, I would want to end up in your collection 😅 if all goes well, I have until the end of October before the selective shuffle begins for more tender orchids to come inside at night. The real MacKoy starts mid November IF the forecast can just be favorable. Seems like a long way away, but time flies when it comes to growing orchids and getting them ready. Thank YOU so much for watching, 🌸🥷🏼BFF San! Have yourself a great Saturday 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    Thank you so much for the reminder, Nina! I'll soon have to start thinking of my massive autumn orchid indoor relocation.
    I'm not looking forward to the challenges of keeping bacterial and fungal issues at bay and the low temperatures and light levels that my orchids will have to contend with here in the UK winter.
    Actually, one of my biggest challenges this coming winter will be watering indoors. I currently use rainwater for my orchids, which I filter to remove debris (a practise I started this spring), and I'll have to work out how to store and utilise that rainwater for indoor winter watering in a way that doesn't require me to head outside into the cold. My tap-water here is extremely hard, and my plants just don't thrive on it. For reasons I won't go into RO / distilled water systems are not current options for me.
    Another challenge will be managing the sheer scale of watering indoors with all the growth (🎉) I've had with my existing orchids and the added new acquisitions to my collection. I do feel embarrassed 😳 even mentioning that to someone with such a large collection as yourself. I *have* written an entire essay but I guess winter too shall pass and the good times of spring/summer will eventually bring us all respite. ❤

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Denise, hi 😍💐 I am not looking forward to the challenges ahead, and even though I have 2 months to go before I have to seriously start putting the puzzle together indoors, I am already mourning the summer 🥺 you have a lot of the good stuff at your disposal! I would not be using RO water if I had at least one strong rain shower / week. What I do, to store my water is use the bottle of laundry detergent. I leach them with tap water for several weeks to at least try and get rid of the intense fragrance of the detergent, and then fill with RO water. My guest bathroom is not useable because I have hundreds of bottles in there 😆 do not feel embarrassed.... this happens when we have this hobby consume us. The indoor watering can be very tedious, sometimes, it also suffices to mist the surface of the pots and not always take the orchids off the shelf. Just watch where the nozzle is and where the water goes. A longer trickle at the surface will disperse through pots. If you have some space you can designate for rain water storage, get those containers, store your rain water and then you also always have room temperature water at the ready, at a moment's notice! I hope this is something that I could give you an idea with 🫶🏼 I hope you are having a relaxing evening, lovely lady! Thank you so much for watching ❤️🌸

    • @denisesase

      @NinjaOrchids Thank you so much for the tips, Nina! I'll be filling those bottles of rainwater and stashing them away for winter! Also, thank you for reminding me. I need to get a mister and a pump sprayer from my dad, which he's keeping in his shed for me - that will most definitely help with winter watering ❤. Yes, this hobby consumes a lot, but rewards in equal if not greater measure.
      Alas, we are both dreading winter's approach. I don't do well in hot weather, and in the past (prior to my orchid hobby) I looked forward to winter with great anticipation. Now all I can think about is how to steer my collection through this horrid, cold, dark season 😂. I know many orchid growers are facing the same challenges with winter approaching and the comraderie encourages me to do my best! ❤❤

    boy, I tell you, autumn is hitting EARLY up north. There are places that already had a frost, almost a full month early. Meanwhile we're still baking down here, not surprising. Pretty soon though it will be time to start shortening the light length on the indoor plants. I start cutting it back in 15 minute increments next month until I get down to about 10.5 hours. The plants outside get what they get.

      Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! it appears to be!! I have been hearing about the weather switching to fall in the US, and it feels early for those as well, but yeah... I am already mourning the summer, even though I have several days left in August. 🥺 thank you so much for adding the detail about reducing light exposure, when growing under artificial lights. I have to remember details like that even though I do not use mine anymore. For those that want to reduce light exposure, it is an important reminder. I never used to do that, back in the day because the majority of the orchids can handle 12 hrs / day all year round. Not talking about winter resting orchids 😅 Hope you are having a great day, Michael! Thank you so much for watching 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    🦒🌷🙋‍♀️💝 My grandparent used to say that the 1st of August was the first day of winter. What a depressing thought but true. As a farmer he knew best as more ware of the path of the sun. And so, sheer curtains are back in use!!! Thanks for all the good advice. I have a question, though about you saying fertilizers are secondary this time of the year, in between seasons. I know calcium and magnesium are of utpost importance but don't new growths also need the other elements present in the fertilizers? Would you be so kind to eleborate on that? Much appreciated. Thanks again for sharing you experience, the way your orchids are growing and blooming are the proof that you are doing it right. Happy sunday to you vecina favorita 💖💖💖💖

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good evening, meine liebe Freundin! I appreciate the wisdom from you Granddad! They truly knew how to read the weather, came with a wealth of experience not relying on apps 🫣😆 what I try and achieve by making fertilizer secondary is to get the new growths that are in their early stages to have base structures / cells as strong as possible. Because, orchids will grow well even without fertilizer, but if they don't have enough calcium then even if they will grow well, the cells are weak. So, yes, fertilizer still comes into play, but if I am applying nutrients, I may do 3 of calcium focus and 1 of fertilizer. My purpuratas, in active growth right now, will have to cope with the cold temperatures. While I can still have a high ppm of calcium nutrients, I am taking advantage of the conditions to get that into their system, then I can tip toe with fertilizer. Same with the angraecoids, the renantheras, and all the tender orchids that are in active growth that will have to deal with horrible conditions in the future. I hope that makes sense? For moving into spring, same thing, while the light increases, the orchids react and start growing new growths, possibly relatively fast, too fast and reaching for light. Those growths are weak! They need the baseline of calcium to grow strong, the rest will be easy as the orchids respond to longer days. I wish I could grow under lights and use heat mats again, because I have no counter comparison of what I am saying. The only exception being, that the orchids I am working with now (and in the past) come through the winter and still bloomed. Vamos a ver! Just watch, because I state something with confidence and past years experiences etc. this winter is going to teach me that my orchids are going to struggle. 🥺 I hope not! Thank you so much for watching, amiga mia! I hope you had a beautiful day and wish a cozy rest of your evening 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    Hi Nina thanks for the informative video as always! I noticed that you had a catasetum in bloom with a female flower and was wondering whether that means that the plant would be considered 'female' or does it also produce male flowers with stamens and pollen? Thank you, hope you have a wonderful Autumn season that is coming full of Phal spikes❤

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Hi 😍💐 Its good to see you! I hope you are doing well 🫶🏼 catasetinae can flower with male or female flowers. This male/female flower trait is called floral dimorphism and when it happens, it is said that the catasetum is happy, aka well grown, because it takes a tremendous amount of energy to grow a female spike. During the winter, this orchid blooms male spikes. Its a fun thing to see these Boo Beep alien blooms 😅 I hope that answers your question. I appreciate the best wishes for autumn, thank you! However, I am not hopefuly for phal spikes, because mine do not get enough light to produce spikes or when they do, I hardly get any blooms. That is my reality atm. 🌸🥷🏼 Samurai Sherrii San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 hello you wonderful supportive, kind and patient friend! I so appreciate you... I cannot express just how much without sounding cheezey, so, if you have in between the lines reading skills, please use them 🫶🏼 once a month is fine, but, if you are giving orchids that are not in active growth, then you are wasting your product because it is an immobile nutrient. It will only get absorbed when orchids are in active growth. I hope that makes sense? When I use CalMag only, which is often, for some reason my pH is too low for the nutrients to be absorbed so I use silicon as a pH up for those applications. A few drops takes care of reaching the sweet spot for my CalMag applications and then the orchids get some silicon as well. I used to soak my orchids monthly many years ago, but in order to save on water, I now use it when I give them CalMag. I aim for a pH of 6.7 so that the CalMag is readily absorbed and if there is a fluctuation in the pot with pH being lower, then the silicon will be absorbed at the optimal range of 6.5. Thank YOU for all YOU do 🌸🥷🏼Samurai Sherrii San! Have yourself the most wonderful rest of your day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      I flush by soaking once a month. Then, use Silicon, CalMag, and seaweed in the water I fill the masks with. The rest of the month I water with MSU. I just started using silicon in March. I seem to be getting good results. Funny thing, many of my hybrid Phals started putting out spikes the end of July while they are growing leaves and roots.😲 There was no cool down, because we have had steady hot temperatures since the beginning of June.🔥 I don't know if the silicon has anything to do with it or not.🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Spikes in July! Amazing! It could be because of the silicon because if your product is a phosphorous based silicon, the phosphorous promotes blooms 😃 the only way to test that would be to not use silicon next year, and see what your phals do, but why would you want to do that? Oooh nice! Your keiki mount project looks wonderful! It's really getting there. I think I will have to try this myself. I chickened out last summer. So I'm guessing that if I do it, in addition to making sure that the roots are long enough for the plant to survive, I should wait until spring to get the best outcome, right?

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I have as yet to get the class of 2024 sorted out on to that keiki mount project. Probably will work on that this week. The video has to come together in some way shape and form, so that is where the snag is. I remember you wanted to do something similar, but you also had the move to think of. So, now that you are settled in nicely and have a better understanding of your space, maybe something like this or the upright version with the Hibiki, as you mentioned, could be a little winter project? 🤔 The best outcome for keikis to get established is always when the roots are long enough, like 3 inches and able to take up their own water. That could be any time of year. Spring usually is not the season for keikis. They start and mature during the summer months, and the project would fall between July and September depending on when the keikis are mature enough to be removed and survive. My keiki video is in the works, and I will be covering the harvesting, timing etc details incl. q&a. 🤞🏼 I can get it done for this weekend because, the editing on that one is going to be another doozy 😅😆

    Hello! Lovely Lady! As a beginner, who lives with scorching 🥵 sun. How do I know how thick of a sheer curtain to put up as I want my mini phal to get as much sun as possible, but NO sunburns! Will any piece of cloth do? I was looking at the various shade cloth at the garden center. Some had tiny holes letting some direct sunlight through, is that all right?
    When I first started orchid keeping, I was so terrified about direct sun on the leaves, I thought they would melt off the plant if touched by the sun... kinda like vampires or the wicked witch who melted with a splash of water. But hours and hours of TH-cam later, I see that they can take a hint of morning or evening sun. My step mother had a lath house where the lath had big holes (2-3") and got sun throughout the day. So how do I know? Or do you think individual orchids can become accustomed to more and more direct light?
    With only one orchid, there's no room for experimenting. So how will I know if my curtain will be shade enough, but not block out too much sun and stunt my growth?
    Currently, there's a piece of tape on the table top where she sits and every day, I keep moving her and the tape further back into the room. (The tape helps me remember where she goes after getting a good looking over.)
    Maybe this is a topic for a video? Hope you are well. Sending lots of love 💕 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵. Take care of yourself and each other 😷

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Hi Suzi Quetie 😍💐 a normal sheer curtain that lets the light through is plenty. Keep your space pretty and don't go with a shade cloth. All you want to achieve is stop the direct sun beating on the leaves, and a pretty sheer curtain where you can not quite tell the details that are outside the window, is plenty fine. I always opt for white to not block out too much light. Orchids can get accustomed to more light, but not the slow travelling sun if it is not diffused while on the foliage. A ray of early morning sunshine won't do any harm if it lingers for 30 minutes, but that same ray of direct sun during midday, the leaves will heat up quickly and cook on the spot. You can try and touch the leaves once the curtain is up, when you believe the sun is the hottest and if they are warm to the touch, that is fine, warm is ok, but some leaves will feel hot and that is when the damage may have already been done. Let me know if I am making sense. Also, an orchid that is in the process of getting established again and out of the stress phase, should not be exposed to the super high light it may be able to handle if she were super healthy. I appreciate you watching this video, thank you so much! p.s.: fun fact: I was the wicked witch of the west in our school play, back in the day! 😆🫶🏼❤️🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids , yes! Perfect sense! Seriously, when I first got her, I thought any direct sunlight was going to turn her into a puff of smoke like from a Lazer gun. But, now I know better!Now I've got to dig through the archives to find a sheer curtain. 😵. Or keep moving her. Do orchids get motion 🤢 sickness? (Joke) Stay safe my friend and enjoy life! 💕🌞🌵😷

      Seeing as you have tape to mark where she resides, moving orchids is only an issue when we don't put them back exactly how they were prior. Same direction of light and its all good 👍🏼 please have yourself a fabYOUlous start to the new week, amiga! Thank you for all your support 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids , my mini phal is in a south facing window... So, her leaves point east and west. Will my new leaf (almost 1.5 cm now😁) continue growing east and west or start growing towards the sun? I'd hate for it to be at an angle to the other leaves as I'd like it to continue growing on the window sill in summer, when the sun is high in the sky and doesn't hit the window sill. If the new leaf grows perpendicular to the others, I worry that it won't be ideal for the window sill anymore. 💕🌞🌵😷

      it will grow out east west and open the biggest surface of the leaf south. It should not do anything weird as you are putting her back exactly the same way she always is. 👍🏼

    We had 2 frosts, then immediately followed up with a week of 20°c weather, followed by a cold front with a 6-day stretch of cyclonic winds. It’s just been a mess down here 🤦‍♀️
    Don’t ask how my collection has fared. I lost more than a couple 😢
    I hope you’re well, Queen Nina. Love to you xx

      😍 My wonderful 🌸🥷🏼BFF from Sydney Sharon San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️😘😘😘 it is so good to see you! Goodness me, how unfortunate 😭 the change of seasons from winter to spring and summer to fall, are so bipolar, it has caught me off guard as well in the past. The forecast says one thing and boom... the reality was completely different. Man alive, I am so sorry! 🥲😘 I am ok! Could be better, but ok, thank you so much! I hope, despite the losses among your plants, that you are doing ok as well 🫶🏼 that your week is going great 🫶🏼 and that the weather is now behaving!! Thank you so much for your comment 🥰 so so good to see you 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      😍 Hi Tina 💐 I am so sorry to read this! I remember when I was studying in Hamburg, Germany, we would have grey winters, overcast, drizzling rain... while somewhat warm, it was miserable and very often it felt as though we were in perpetual fall throughout the whole summer. The only difference being, fall was cooler. Grey in grey, so I am so sorry that you had that kind of summer 🥺 I will keep my fingers crossed that your growths will pull through and even if they end up maturing smaller than they should be, maybe there is comfort in the fact that they will still produce a root system 🙏🏼 thank you so much for being here and for watching, Tina! I hope your week is off to a great start 🫶🏼❤️🌸
