Sky Islands are also called sky islands because for many animals and plants they act like islands. The harsh desert environment that separates these mountain ranges is so different from the cool forested highlands, it might as well be water. For example, squirrels at the high elevations of Mt Graham (8000 to 10,500) are confined to that mountain range. They are not adapted to descend into the desert floor and make it across to another mountain range. So some of these animals have become separate species as they would if they were on true island separated from other islands by water.
Thank you for the best hiking videos that I know of. Actually did a fist pump when I saw this one was released, knowing that you had done the trail earlier in the year.
when hikes go wrong that make better stories...one of my favorite trips ever i was mildly hypothermic with moderate altitude sickness, shelter ripped, had to wrap myself in it as i made my way back out over the next few days.... i wouldn't trade that trip for a dozen easy trips. the cold front made the stars the clearest ive ever seen, had i been comfortably sleeping in my shelter i would have missed the most spectacular view of the milky way ive ever seen.
Great point at the end about preferring to deal with the problems of being on trail over the problems of being in town. I think many of us feel the same.

Amazing hike. Glad to see you have got it off the list of many adventures. It was one of my most challenging hikes back in 2019. I was alone almost the whole way. only had other day hikers while sharing trail. The amazing cliffs and valleys are so very cool. They will keep you company the lonely days. The night sunset are stunning I found when up high enough to see them. Cheers and happy Safe trails!

"I've broken a tooth and will need to find a dentist in one of these small desert towns" Sounds like the authentic old west cowboy experience! I hiked half of the 80-mile Black Canyon Trail that's relatively near where your hike started (between Phoenix and Prescott), and I had to bail on it because I made a series of dumb decisions crossing a raging river that resulted in me losing my shoes and injuring my feet and then having to hike several miles in nothing but socks across that rough desert terrain before I could get help. Wasn't fun! I like to think I'd have finished that hike if it wasn't for this setback. These canyons and sprawling hills in the beginning really remind me of the terrain on the BCT, probably because it's the same desert lol. It truly is beautiful in a way only people who have hiked through it can understand. It's easy to drive past it on the interstate and just think it's a boring ol' desert. There were a surprising amount of wildflowers and green grass this last spring!
@@JupiterHikes oh cool! It's one of my favorite hikes, to me it's what the Ocean-to-Lake trail was for you, a training ground for larger and crazier hikes to come.
The Agua Fria was really flowing this spring. I planned on hiking the BCT in March but put it off until April because of that. I've hiked it end to end a few times now.
@@russellinthebush2897 yeah March 13th was the day this happened, I had done lots of overnight trips on the BCT before, on the Drinking Snake segment especially, but this was the farthest I'd gone on it and was my first time trying to hike it end to end. I think the river would have been nice and crossable further upstream, where it was wider and slower, but I didn't know anything about fording rivers at the time and I made several regrettable mistakes. I'm glad I was able to walk away from it and learn

With the mishap with your strap I thought you were going to have to David Carradine it across the southwest with a haversack, a bed roll and some tea leaves.
I thought I was prepared to, did about 10 miles like that and it was not so great! Being able to at least switch shoulders is great but not having the options... 😬
If you ever need an emergency molar crown, find a dentist that does CEREC crowns. They can make you a new crown in about an hour and get you back on trail with a permanent repair.
Incredible advice, and so cool they can do that now. Wasn't a possibility in the small towns of this trail but for the traveler or hiker it's a great advancement to look for if in need!
@@JupiterHikes Small town dentists probably wouldn't have CEREC. It is pretty cool. They take a 3D laser of your mouth, use a mill machine to carve a ceramic crown, and use an oven to harden it. Today, it costs about the same as a traditional crown, but only takes 1-2 hours instead of two weeks. You had a tough hike but came out on top!
Great vibe for this hike, really out there, like one of the early explorers crossing the country. Its for us to see problems too (not for you), as too many YTers just showcase a dreamy life for their hikes, too sanitized. Overcoming stuff makes character, though you seem very cool about it all

Cool, can't wait for the next video. I only made it to Gila Hot Springs last year and was too injured to go over Mount Graham. I ended spending a week in Stafford waiting for my hiking partner and then letting him rest up for a few days. Happy trails Jupiter

I know you did the dental floss repair to your pack but you implied you were able to fix it correctly on your triple zero. True statement? Your cinematography and editing are exceptional in this vlog. You have really honed your skills in that respect. I’m looking forward to all that follow. That was some beautiful country but obviously challenging, to put it mildly, in some sections. 90 minutes for .4 miles is some tough going. Good luck with your next hike.
I fixed it in my triple zero by sending myself a new one 😵💫 I could have continued on with my dental floss fix and likely if been fine. This trail is just too remote tho and has many other struggles. I just didn't want to have a lingering strap problem on top of that. I wanted all my problems done for good!
forced Jardine straight outta the gate. I think trails like these are interesting to see ultralight gear on as they're harsher, more similar to what we have here in Australia where things arent as manicured, more wildlife, there's no support/towns and there's been fires through constantly. Definitely keen to see how the rest of your kit pans out, but I think it shows that sometimes a bit of extra weight for the benefit of slightly more durability isn't always a bad price to pay.

Another great video. Some gear questions - what happened with the shoes? Which pairs failed and why? Do you prefer having a tarp? You helped me get me into tarps and I know this year you’re just experimenting with stuff and that’s great. But wonder if the extra weight of a tent and lack of flexibility ever became issues.
My first pair, my merrells that I love and have used like 6 pairs of happily. I think I just got a dud or defective pair that wasn't glued properly, as the rubber outer sole just totally peeled off one shoe. As for the tarp vs tent, I will have a video just after the GET ones that talks directly about that. For now, I did curse often about the extra 3lbs I was carrying. But it was more luxurious
Nice pics as always. You continue to tell a good story. I am curious how much slower you travel doing video and photos vs just thru-hiking. The end result is certainly worth it.
That's a good question and one which is hard to answer. I personally spend maybe an extra hour each day just doing video related things. Frankly I should do more even. So 3ish miles per day I imagine
So sorry about the pack strap. I had a squirrel chew off a hiking pole strap. Good to have floss for repairs. I did the GET in 2013. Trying to follow along and guess where you are. Not many references.

awesome video, spectacular trip. You've aroused my curiosity, like is this something I want to do?? looks like you didn't camp in Aravaipa Canyon? It's a fave of ours. We've been 3 years in a row, 3 day trip each time, 2 nights in the canyon. That's as long as they will let you stay, or we'd stay longer!
I'm going to answer your question with a probably no, it's a great hike and I learned a ton out there! I just don't think it's the kind of adventure most people would enjoy

How did you find the altra lone peaks? At the end of the video it looks like the lone peak 6? I'm looking into trying out trail runners for hiking, as I've been using boots for a long time and want to test out something different. Do they hold up well, dry fast, have a comfortable fit for day or couple day long hikes?

I spent quite a bit of time on the black canyon trail in 2020, that was roughly where I was living. It really is a beautiful place!
