- 784 miles, Phoenix to Albuquerque. The Grand Enchantment Trail thru hike is done, and it unfortunately just doesn't get easier! Starting off with a lot of really difficult trail in the San Mateo Mountains with blowdowns, washed out trail, wildfire damage and all the problems that come with that. Tricky camping, hard navigating, slow hiking, and mentally draining. An incredible adventure all around, but quite hard in the moment.

I did really love the San Lorenzo Canyon and had a lot of fun there walking among the beautiful rock formations. It was cool to cross the Rio Grand River as it is such an iconic thing in this region. The Manzano Mountains actually had some really great well groomed trails and would be a fun place to return to. Then finishing my hike with the Sandia Mountains and crest trail.
This hike officially terminates at the bottom of the tram with the La Luz Trail but I sure could not help but to take that gondolla! I actually had planned to take the tram, and had been dreaming of it before I even started this hike. It had only just opened a day prior to me getting there, so the timing really worked out. From what I understand it is the second longest in the world at something like 3 miles long. Very cool and fun terminus for me, especially given theres a gormet restaurant at the top of that peak too!
So that's it. The Grand Enchantment Trail is done. 784 miles from Phoenix Arizona to Albuquerque New Mexico. An incredibly difficult hike, the hardest hike I have ever done.

Do most hikers go west to east? Maybe a reverse direction would allow for more hiker encounters. Koi are omnivores and will eat just about anything they can swallow.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this in the rest of the comment sections but the fish in the cattle trough helps keep the water clean (fish eat algae and mosquito larva). Congrats on the hike, was a cool series!
Edit: just got to the spot where you talked more about the fish.
just looked it up and they do eat algae but not as much as pleco. i wonder why they'd only go with koi then....

Congrats on finishing your hike! One thing I've heard about rattlesnakes is that, because so many that rattle and act aggressive towards humans get killed, we're creating an unintentional selective breeding where the ones who stay quiet and hide are more likely to survive and reproduce. Not sure if it's true, but maybe one possible explanation for the quiet snake you passed on the trail. Anyway, great video series. Thanks for sharing it with us!
I’ve heard this as well and it makes sense.
I've heard a similarly opposite thing, that non venemous snakes have learned to 'rattle' their tail against something to imitate and get predators to go away. Don't know if true but I have seen non venemous snakes do this.
This hike was like a series of unfortunate events lol. Very funny but also amazing that you finished!
So impressed with your ability to complete such a trail. I guarantee that I would have been constantly getting lost!

I gave aid to a GET hiker on the road closet the Monitcello box, water and fruit. He was waiting a ride to Winston to pick up his box of food, etc. He had been there for 4 hours and didn't get picked. Those ranchers and cowboys can be cranky and selfish, bless their hearts.
I found the locals of winston to be very friendly, I walked that road to town 15 miles before 1 car passed (who gave me a ride the rest of the way)

What an interesting,challenging, huge hike, congratulations. I find this whole area fascinating, particularly the first nation people who inhabit these areas. It would have been helpful if you had been able to trace your route on a map as you were travelling. Alternatively after your hike. I love your calm, relaxed delivery of your story too, thankyou.

Technically it is supposed to go down the la Luz, but! With so many alternates and 'choose your own adventure' style as this hike was, it is fitting that in the end you have one last choice depending on desires. The restaurant and a really cool tram for me was worthwhile! Especially considering some trails like the AT finishing on the top of a mountain, literally everyone ever has joked about how nice it would be to just get a lift down. This trail had that option.
@@JupiterHikes ha! Best option wins. La Luz is a beautiful trail to experience, and it’ll be there next time. Growing up there the Tram was a once or twice a year experience and the old restaurant that was there for years (The High Finance) was super fancy but the floor and neighboring tables wobbled and shook whenever someone walked past. I wasn’t a skier but those who did would ride the tram up after school or an early work day to ski down the other side. A beautiful way to get to 10k ft. My last La Luz trek was in 21 right after thanksgiving. Parked in the tram lot, walked a few miles north to the trail head, went up through some unexpectedly deep snow in my keens and socks, walked across the top through some snow, enjoyed some nachos in the new digs, and trammed down to my waiting car. Perfection. Glad you got this unique ABQ experience!

The fish are probably in there to keep the algae down. We use goldfish in our troughs for this purpose...keeps the troughs and water cleaner.
I lived in Albuquerque for a handful of years when I went to school out there those mountains were my playground cool that I live in east central Florida just north of your home town and can see you in my old stomping grounds

I hiked a short trail a few weeks ago that was riddled with down trees and lots of brush grown over the trail. I regretted wearing shorts. Lol. The ten mile overgrown section felt more like 40 miles. Beautiful hike, though.

This trail reminds me a bit of the Idaho Centennial Trail in terms of remoteness, route finding, and turning your back on maintained trails to bushwhack through miles of wilderness or burned timber. Still beautiful scenery despite the fire. Can't wait for your next adventure!

While I lived in Albuquerque, I planned to hike the GET as my first trail. I made it over Sandia Mountain and to Tijeras, where my knees and back told me that wasn’t my game. Funny that a thru hiker of your experience says the GET is the hardest trail. I know several triple crown hikers who will never attempt this one.
Now, looking at your video list, you’ve completed more se the f the Great Western Loop. Is that your goal?
Love the series! What happened to your filter? Were you able to revive it with vigorous back flushing?
I tried! And still continued to use it, but feel that it was likely defunct after all it went through

What's the longest stretch without seeing another human? Does this affect you mentally?
Absolutely was affecting. Knowing if I got hurt I likely wouldn't be found for a long time was one thing. Over the course of the entire 800 miles I only saw 6 other GET hikers. I would go hundreds of miles without seeing anyone, aside from when I was in "town". The towns though often didn't have cell service, and usually just a population of under 100. So they weren't much of a social experience either. People move to these places to get away I think
