Possibly my favorite alignment related incident was when one player came to the first session with a chaotic neutral rogue, he watched his teammates be the most horrific murder hobos, and solemnly looked down at his sheet, crossed out his alignment and wrote in "lawful good".
I imagine a “chaotic neutral” character as the absolute BEST character as far as potential growth goes. Or at least as far as just basing them on alignment goes. Really wanna try one out one of these days.
But, my idea behind it is, well, they’re spontaneous. But unlike all the people who just. DO stuff and say “yeah burn down the orphanage and kill the poor! Chaotic neutral!”
My idea of chaotic neutral is more, they just stop in the middle of the street, pondering for a moment before they just shrug, go up to the noble they saw recoiling in disgust from a farmer guy. And they just. Scoop up a handful of mud and slap the noble in the face with it. Definitely not something an evil character would do, nor something a good character would do. One cause they’d just stab both and take the nobleman’s stuff, the other cause they’d just sigh and move along cause the noble isn’t really hurting anyone.
They’d also be the most likely person in the group to just randomly buy like, three huge sacks of rice for some unknown reason.
Only for it later to be revealed they’ve been making absurd amounts of riceballs for the sole purpose of “Rouge had that one funny curved blade so I wanted to try something from his home to see what makes him so edgy. I think it had something to do with how they made “rice balls” but I haven’t figured out exactly how many rices you PUT into the balls for it to make you brooding… Or maybe.. They’re brooding cause NOBODY knows how to truly make the perfect rice ball and it’s bothering their whole culture. All I know is I don’t like rice anyways.”

One thing that I love about neutral characters is that they reflect the dynamic of the group itself and adapt to it. Now, how they choose to do so will vary, but all of them do. If a group is most good, they will either be good or more chaotic. If the group is, as described, bunch of murder hobos, they are likely to either edge that direction or, more likely, go to the other end of the spectrum. The epitome of neutral is that they keep a balance in terms of the context of the group they share. They like things to be comfy for themselves too so most lean into “good” actions but this is less because they are good themselves and far more because they create a more comfy environment. So yeah. To me this was a neutral power move, the whole alignment change is totally epitome neutral. And being so opposite end of the spectrum, that’s chaotic neutral to a “T”

I thought of it as they would burn down a families house without them inside not go do it for fun then stab the family but so they can show the family their new homes which is way better then their old home in every way of course if I do make a chaotic neutral character I'm not going to do that maybe
@@NightMeteor21 It could work if you’re playing a particularly rich chaotic neutral. They COULD burn down the house for laughs even! See the reactions on everyone’s faces. And after that they start walking off and motion for the family to follow.

Chaotic neutral isn’t a class that’s meant to have particularly malicious or good intentions either way. But having them as a joker of sorts who always makes sure things turn out better than they were before. (Even if it causes people grief in doing so.) Is the optimal way to play chaotic neutral in my opinion. Just cause that’s the way you’ll get the most laughs outta them without having a mean spirited character in your team.
Damn, watching these I wish there was a theme park equivalent for D&D out there with Quincy running the "local tavern".

The chaotic neutral one I'd describe as how does my character get the most out of it in the most gratifying way. Could be playing the hero for clout and admiration, could be robbing a gambling den at an opportune time. All depends on the situation.
The person playing Lucifer has his own ticktock. But I am surprised they would say Quincy is one that people don't know or have not see. He is in most if not all d&d ticktock compalation.

That's a great way to run it since so many confuse chaotic neutral and chaotic evil. Neutral is for ones morals that don't align with either good or bad, whereas evil is just being terrible on purpose.

Honestly I see Chaotic neutral as "my goals are my own" and you stay with the party because they're your best avenue to achieve those goals
the example I like to use is Entrapta from the Netflix She-Ra.
She didn't join the hoard out of malice, or spite, but because she wanted to study the first ones tech and build robots... the hoard had the best resources to do that. that's what it's like to be chaotic neutral in my opinion.
I love the fact Quincy used all that medieval looking equipment to make the hot chocolate only to use an electric stove(?) in the end.

I played a chaotic neutral character. He joined the party for a while, left to lead the thieves guild, came back to the party, and eventually just up and moved to a new continent to basically be Robin hood.
I'm a chaotic good Tabaxi who chases feathers, plays with yarn balls, and despises the pet mouse in the group, wish I was that badass.

The trick to the dice tower (in my experience) is to go from biggest Die to Smallest die. D20 on the bottom, D4 of the top.
Put d10 closer to the top too

I think it’d be cool if the mystery key didn’t just go anywhere, but specifically other doors. Doors to enemy head quarters, doors to cells/cages, doors to other realms, etc.
And you can't choose which you have to roll to get the one you want.

We are a lvl 12 party consisting of a cleric with smite and 28 max ac, a rogue who does x3 crit damage, a divination wizard, and an artificer who can become a mechanical dragon

If you give your players a key to any door, you don't need to make it cursed. They will naturally abuse it until they become high priority targets for the authorities.
So basically a key enchanted with the knock spell. It obviously will need a cap on how much it can be used but it could lead it being abused over time when the thief uses it too much.
Minor nitpick of 10:21, he should’ve said “You would be honored to have me join you on your quest.” Otherwise it’s perfect.
Chaotic Evil is the alignment that would randomly do horrible psycho stuff. CN is basically the anarchist out for their own good times with no particular need to help or hurt others.
There was one CN character I have ever played. I can't remember his name, but he was a tiefling sorcerer whose main drive was seeking knowledge by any cost. He had landed himself in a prison for, while accidental, causing the deaths of certain friends and loved ones. He mainly views the incident as a failed experiment rather than a tragedy.

1:30 I think it's be fair to give them 3 uses where it opens normally, 1 use where it gives them something really good, like a teleport to a town they have been talking about without a % roll, and then drop a bombshell on them by opening a gateway to the Astral Plane or a boss room. Y'know, a consequence for their 'good luck'. After that, they'll be playing the odds when they use it and never know when the next punch will come.

Chaotic Neutral is, I believe, actually defined as someone who will do anything and everything they get a chance to do to better their standings, be it good, evil, or something in between. They’re out for themselves and no one else, and they have no problems doing whatever they have to in order to preserve themselves or better their situation. Be that leaving their party to fight a losing battle, randomly starting a helpful service of some sort, or flirting with an eldritch horror (as one of my own players found to be acceptable).

Ok storytime of a batshit thing i did once in DND! I (14) was playing a tortle monk in candlekeep! My dad was our DM. We were fighting a bunch of wererats (there were 3 but we were level 2 so it was quite a lot). I ended up positioning myself in a corner and essentially sprinting, jumping up into one of the wererats and usung my shell defense midair (+5 AC) to use aerodynamics to knock two prone and lucky me crit and ended up pinning the third one to a wall to get him to talk (we needed a key or something) i was so proud of myself and thought id share!
12:16 I think a good character to emulate for chaotic neutral is Wimpy from the classic Popeye cartoons.
One day I want to make something like quincys tavern I real life, all the employees would get to come up with a character and act like them and customers would be encouraged to come in costume but even if thy didn't they would still get treated like a dnd character just one from a far off place. We could host dnd sessions in rooms in the back or people could come in like it's an actual tavern. Maybe we could even set up quests some how or have a chest in the corner that has animatromics to make it a mimic. We could have a group of bards that occasionally perform and even have an ongoing story that can be heard by the employees

I have the magic key:
Backstory my character is an 11” fairy and she has a magic key as her wand. We use the key and it opens a door to a wizards tower where we meet one of are new players a mummy dragonborn. It was really fun!
Ok. So I gave my party of happy reeeeetards a "skeleton key" that could unlock any door.
It was cursed so anytime it was used it would remove one random bone from the user....
The bone didn't just disappear tho. It added itself to a skeleton of an improbably powerful revenant. A ultra hard high CR challenge optional secret boss I baked into their campaign.
The party, who were mostly good alignment I might add, worked out the first bit of the curse... so they hired npcs to go with them and open doors. If an npc lost an armbone or a shin they'd just claim the door was cursed and the npc was unlucky...
When one of their porters had his head deflate opening a chest they finally realized they might be messing with stuff they shouldn't. Sadly that skull was the last piece the Bone Collector needed to be whole and start seeking his lost key....
I have never EVER enjoyed killing pcs, but the fight with that boss was so deserved. I nearly cracked a rib not laughing when they almost wiped.
Knowingly made hired hands use the key...as soon as they made the 1st one do it I'd have told them that everyone that had the good alignment is now neutral...
@@Gailardia I was slowly degrading them on a scale. When it killed the npc I did dump their alignments. It was a wakeup call for them for the rest of the campaign.
@@hogfry as long as you thought it was fair. My addendum to your system would have been good alignments would degrade way faster, neutral would slow and take probably to a npc death to hit evil.

Gonna start DnD for the first time soon 😁 I've been wanting to play for years and it just never happened. I'm so excited my first character I've ever played is going to be a lawful evil/neutral warlock ghost. Very excited 😄

Whenever I think of chaotic neutral I think of my shadow sorcerer who travels with a child he rescued from undead torturers.
He will mostly try to do good and help people, but the moment someone tries to hurt the child he is traveling with they had better be able to hop into another plane of existence because he will hunt that person down and....... make the rest of their VERY short lives miserable.
Chaotic neutral just means your willing to do (almost) anything to achieve your goal (if your goal is world domination the evil alignment is down the hall and to the left) . In my example my shadow sorcerer will even go the the extreme of murder if it means that the one person he cares for in the word will be safe from harm. (Though he tries to avoid going that far if he can)

My favourite situation of chaotic neutral: The party were randos hired for the same job. We found an ominous book. My character starts to read it and midway through the first sentence their voice begins to change, they stared with a blank expression and mumbled non comprehensible demonic sounding stuff. One character in particular got scared before my character bursts into laughter and revealed that they were just messing around ^^

Chaotic neutral to me is a mix of ‘I follow my own interests,’ ‘spontaneous based on emotion’ and ‘not evil, but not good either’
For the first one, they don’t really care about anything other than themselves, who they care about, and what gets them what they want. Be it law or opposition, they will get what they want
Secondly, they might jump to action in spur of the moment situations. They could plan it out, but they definitely don’t just shrug when they see something that gets em going in that specific way
Lastly, they might use explicitly harsh or ‘evil’ methods for their ends (their threats could easily be bluffs, simply just a mean to an end), like torture for the safety of the innocent, or slamming a nobles face into mud when they show disregard for their citizens. Not evil, not good. Neutral.

The second tik tok was definitely me. My charcter was a Dragonborn artificer who brewed healing and damage pots, and I had a character on standby in case the Dragon died. And I had dice. Too easy.

At the very least I'd say with the key for instance, have them roll a dice every time they use it so they can better judge the risks and rewards.
