We have had 6 people quit over the past 3 months with no replacements hired. We are told we are not being team players, if you refuse to take on the extra work. Oh well, I am getting ready to retire, so I don't care.
Managers keep announcing how those employees are leaving for fantastic opportunities. I asked why our company isn't providing fantastic opportunities, so people don't have to elsewhere. . LOL

I've always found that it's a good idea to drive by the company you're interested in after hours and on weekends to see how many cars are in the parking lot. A full parking lot on the weekends or evenings is a very bad sign of them having a good work/life balance.

I had an employer lead me on for 4 months. They are "so busy" and "need to get back to me on projected capacity". They want me to provide my own PC for work. They are incredibly cheap and a sweatshop. So glad I dodged that bullet.

During an interview a few years back I was asked: "So, what do you usually do when you get home?". Silly me thought they wanted to know about my hobbies and what I liked doing in my free time. WRONG. It was a tricky question to see if I was married or single, and for them to feel less guilty when assigning me overtimes almost every day. They lied to saying overtimes only when they were busy. Turns out they stared at me badly when I left on time the first day, and the second day the manager asked me why I was leaving and not "helping the team". LOL

I used to work for a small little medical office that had pretty high traffic for paltry wages but acceptable benefits. I was already working 5 days a week and nearly every other Saturday, and during a little pow-wow, the boss floated the idea of opening all seven days, but since we were already looking to hire, I knew additional staff wasn't part of the plan. When I made it very clear that I was absolutely not available 7 days, the boss pretty much stormed out and the meeting ended. I don't regret holding my ground in the slightest.

I have been stuck in a job where the average work hours are 14 hrs/day and almost no weekend. This led me to have multiple stress related health disorders and burnouts. Now that I look back, all the signs you just mentioned were there during my interview process. I had to prepare a presentation and worse present it to my manager on the day of Christmas. I am so relieved that I have finally put in my notice. Wish I could have seen your video before I had joined this company. Thank you.

In private industry, full-time job after full-time job I've had required that I stay 'til the work is done. Each day I'd go in, I wouldn't know what time I could leave work. My "workday" ranged from 12 to 16 hours a day, 5 - 7 days a week. Now, if I apply for a job, I would want one that is only part time (three days a week). The only possible exception I'd make is if the job is a city, county, state or Federal job. I believe that there's zero work-life balance in private-industry full-time jobs now, unlike many, many years ago.

My direct manager recently quit for another job so in the meantime I am handling both his work and my own. When you give someone the work of 2 people, only 50% of it is going to get done. I am already working on average close to 50 hours a week. No way am I going to work 60+ hours. I'm not sorry.

I recently took a promotion that also gave me a MUCH better work/life balance. It is gonna take a heck of a lot more money now for me to go back to how I used to work. I no longer NEED to stay late, and if I do it is planned well in advance. I am able to flex a lot of my hours into how I want them, and I am no longer stuck covering weekend issues.
Gotta say--I think your interview tips helped me land the new job!!

dude i work in construction and there are plenty of workaholics in my industry. but from my first job, i came in on time and left sharp at 5p. now at my 3rd job i come in a little late (like 10min late). and still leave early or on time. and no one said anything because work still gets done. and if our boss leaves early on friday, we all leave early. and remember work will always be there tomorrow or you won't have a job.

Honestly just got a new job that I start at soon and was contacted at almost 8pm told to download an app for group chat with my bosses and coworkers and I said no I dont do that unless it’s something urgent or for an emergency. Was kinda forced into it and feel like wow my boundary is already being ignored and crossed… not a good sign.
I dont need to chat with anyone at work outside of work hours unless it’s an emergency.

My job operates 7 days a week. I asked to every other weekend off to co-parent my daughter. In short, they declined my request because “everyone was complaining about having few weekends off”. Needless to say, I’ve only been there 2 months, but I know I’m leaving soon. Of being a present father isn’t a good enough reason, I know nothing else will be also.

When I became salaried I made sure with that offer and every subsequent offer with each promotion that it is specifically called out in the job offer that the salaried amount is based upon a 40 hour work week. I know some people feel the need or desire to work extra hours for free to complete the work assigned to them but I am always very clear about what I can handle and not handle in my 40 hours. Sure I will work a little bit extra here and there but I also take off early here and there so it ends up fair and work for a good company that really does appreciate work/life balance. That way if the company ever tries to expect you to work more than 40 hours regularly you can point right to your offer and say that isn't happening but depending on your personal preferences that you are more than willing to renegotiate the salary for a lot more pay to take up more of your time.

During the hiring process one often has numerous emails with a corporate recruiter and/of hiring manager. I look at timestamp on those emails. It is red flag if I am getting emails at night or on weekends. Also, often the signature of the email indicates if email is being sent from cell phone--- that plus off hours is a double-red flag.

You are right again!! I have been interviewing in the past. 1 of the company 's HR guy sent me email around 1030pm at night. During the interview, i asked the plant controller what he likes about the company. he told that they are very "competitive" and like to set goal that will stretch the employee. In accounting, this will only mean loading extra work onto accountants and run the department "lean"

Excellent advice!! May not always be possible to have serious conversations with existing employees unless you lurk in the parking lot. Then there's the "bait and switch". You're hired for one position, and then after you've been there awhile, the job responsibilities can change significantly under the guise of "additional job security because your existing position may be going away".

My current job as a warehouse picker got no work life balance at all. I am ready to quit one month in. I work Mon Tue Thur Fri Sat(overtime) 5:45AM to 4:30PM, for which i have to wake up at 3AM. And they have mandatory overtime after black friday until end of the year. And they give out useless points and lottery tix for people who picks up extra overtime on top of the mandatory overtime. I get off work at 4:30PM but after getting to the gym( within 1 minute from my home) it's already 5:20PM, when i get home it's already 7PM. Then i only got one hr to cook dinner and meal box for tomorrow, clean, shower. Then head to bed. I am glad i'm single with no kids, otherwise i don't think i can manage this kind of hours.

I got all the way to nearly the end of an in-depth technical interview with a place once before I learned that they expected everyone to be at work 5 days a week, well before 7AM, and it was a half hour drive away. For a programming job. I'd have had to go to bed sometime before my little kids, which is sort of hard to do. The interview fell apart at that point. Glad I found out after not too much wasted time. Let some nearby bachelor morning person with no family take that one, not me.

So after being in the newspaper business for 20+ years I decided to move over to something that can provide good income with better work life balance than the 12 to 16 hour days 6 to 7 days a week. So I came over to plumbing. Get out from behind a desk, see the family, go fishing… well good to know I didn’t pick well. It’s just as bad with equally terrible expectations. I wish my education degree I could use and be able to make a living wage. But we all know education has no money. Time to reevaluate.

1:52 Actually, I'd consider the opposite of this to be the sign of poor work-life balance. If they're trying to recruit you, but they'll only make time for you during normal business hours, that reflects badly on how they respect other people's time. You might be working those hours! If they're expecting you to take time off or call in sick for an interview, huge red flag. They contacted you, and it's not even a sure thing that you'll want the job or get the offer! I won't entertain interview requests where the interviewer won't make time for my schedule.
As for the 1:11 one before it, it depends on which stage of the process that the recruiter is contacting me at odd hours. An initial contact should be during daylight hours at least, even if it just goes to voicemail, but again it goes back to whether they value my time and work around my availability. It's an unreasonable request for them to want me to make time for them outside my availability.
For 4:17, work-life balance aside, companies sometimes use "interview projects" to get unpaid labor out of people who think it's a real interview, then never hire anyone. If they require you to perform more than part of an hour of real work (you can decide where the cutoff is) before they decide whether to hire you, you can and should negotiate for fair payment for that labor at your consulting rate. You should also be mentally prepared to find out they were lying to you all along, and there was never really a job to interview for.

What kind of jobs pay good (80K - 100K Canadian) that actually have a work life balance? I work 12+ hours a day for a 91K salary + bonus (~10%) with all training provided by the company and only grade 12 required, but there are more days on the + side of that 12 (34 hours straight is my longest so far) and the stress physically leaves me in pain, but where else can I get this income and have more time with my wife and children?

I hate to come to the defense of recruiting, particularly in view of my extreme cynicism, but regarding off-hour contact times, it’s possible that the recruiter is doing this as a courtesy, thinking that it’s easier for a prospective employee to talk during non-working hours. Again, I’m cynical and doubt this is usually the case, but it is a possibility, however remote.

Do you have any videos on getting jobs for people who are introverted? And when I say introverted, I mean INTROVERTED (all caps). Almost bordering on what some people may call “antisocial”. The very idea of having to socialize or go through an interview process makes them absolutely sick to their stomach to the point that it has a crippling effect on their life? They are not people-persons and they are definitely not customer-people. People for whom “starting their own business” is NOT an option. People for whom “come out of your comfort zone/just learn to be more social/seek psychiatric help or therapy” are also NOT solutions. They have tried all of these things for YEARS since jr high school and and still dealing with these issues (they are currently in their early 30’s). And yes, I’m asking for someone I know personally. Family has been taking care of them to this day. Are there any other ways to get jobs for these people without having to go through an interview or being expected to be social? Is there hope for them?

As someone on the autism spectrum (no learning difficulties) and scores between 93 and 96 on the introverted section of the personality tests, it's hard.
The way I dealt with it is this ... zero interaction before the interview - even for days. To build up that reservoir of energy which being around people takes. That gives me enough to get me through an interview. Then zero interaction afterwards .. even for days until I can deal with people again. Yes I know that scheduling that much solo time is difficult BUT without it, it's a meltdown waiting to happen.
Personally I find making sure the ongoing JOB is suitable is more difficult. I spent 20 years in customer-facing roles in offices. Now I go in, get my stuff and I'm pretty much solo all night. Heaven. So there is zero point going through the interview if you know you can't do the job itself.
As for types of jobs ... security and truck driving can be pretty solo depending on the role. I'm sure there are many others but those two come to mind and don't require 'socializing' in an office.
My very very best wishes to your friend. Been there and it SUCKS.

For one job, I was asked to go through several interviews, tests (personality and skill-based), and asked to develop a presentation for an internal interview (to move to a different department)....never an 8-12 hour presentation! What?
I believe it was partially an overly process orientation of a company which acquired us combined with the hiring manager wanting to be able to provide evidence why I was a better fit than someone else who was more experienced in the specific job. They also had the fact that I held other needed skills which weren't sufficiently available with the current staff.
Another thought regarding how a life/work balance issue may arise is that a leader or manager may create the imbalance due to their wanting to avoid some aspects of "real life", and it may not represent the company as a whole (but will likely represent the position).
If a company could provide me with only my current income (or even maybe less) for a 4 day x 8 hour week, that would be great...as long as it still allowed ability to learn and grow to contribute more to the company (not in the limited sense of promotion, but actual means to make more of a difference). I am almost always available for urgent issues either way.
Thanks for sharing the red flags. I particularly pay attention to the repeat job listing one. If it isn't specific to work/life balance then it is signaling another issue. Not currently looking for another job, but I keep my ear to the ground so I am not surprised by current trends/needs should I require refreshing my job hunting skills.

But the job posting would be a good sign. How many people have they turned over in a 1 year time span for the same job.

Someone like Bezis can take all the time off they want, make a tidy profit, all while complaining about people not happy with their pay and/or work/life balance, or the "worker shortage" they created by not valuing the people that help them have their work/life balance.

Any ideas on how to market an extremely high intelligence? I know this isn't the kind of question that will help a large amount of people; everyone likes to feel like they are smart, but most are to afraid to push to see if they actually are out of fear that they are not. The funniest part of anything you say on the matter is that no matter who hears it they will think it applies to them. The dunning-Kruger effect is extremely prevalent in America and the rampant amounts of unresolved cognitive-dissonances help perpetuate the mental illnesses that we accept as "normal".
It would really help though to have an answer to how to market intellect in the work place or if it is a lost cause.

    • @ALifeAfterLayoff
      @ALifeAfterLayoff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'd suggest approaching this from a different angle. Instead of trying to market a high intelligence to a broad audience, it's better to be the best possible fit for the specific job you're being considered for.
Careful resume strategy would be a more preferred option.

Here's the problem with this video/advice. Work Life balance isn't the full aspect that people are looking for, we want Work Life balance with High pay. The High pay part takes presidents over Work Life balance for most of us because we know how shitty life is when you're broke and never want that for our spouse and children. I work in a career where i work 14+ hours a day 5 days a week and sometimes have to come in on my days off or vacation and we go on call every other weekend and I'm salary so i don't get paid extra, but i make $90k + bonus (~10%) annually and that affords my family a lot of things. I really miss my family but i grew up poor and want better for my kids.

Really disagree about the after hours segment. I used to make a point to schedule interviews at 7am or 6pm to accommodate folks from having to take a day off from a current job. I would rather meet you at 7 and leave early that day and this is not a warning sign but a sign we are flexible and care about working within your time.

This so so so reminds me of my first company out of college. A Fortune 500 contractor bases out of Omaha with the acronym PKS for those with an inquiring mind and a knack for google.
They required 10 hr days 7-5 and would give the cold shoulder and shun/bully if you didn’t realistically put in 12 hr days 6-6…. And demanded you work ea Saturday and occasionally Sunday. Zero OT or Comp for all of the 70-90 hour weeks. The way they strung people along was by promising stock options after 5-7 years of employment and being a coveted “stock holder”… who would retire wealthy from the company stock. It was a legal pyramid scheme & all very cult like with the true believers who militantly enforced the company “culture” and what they didn’t offer up was that the 5 year attrition rate was over 75%. All of the old stock holder management types were bitter people who were no better than slaves to the company. I left after 5 years and looking back I dodged a huge life bullet.
My advice is set up firm boundaries. Have a good work ethic and sell yourself, learn a backup trade for a fallback, continuously train and cross train and build skills and resume points, but let no one own you.
These companies that have a mercenary attitude of exploiting and predatory capitalism don’t care if they wreck your family life, if you have adrenal burnout at 40 or other health issue at all after they have used you up. They demand a 2 week notice when you quit but will lay you off by shutting down your log in & security access.
I am a libertarian and believe in the free market and mutually beneficial trade of goods and services. This is much different from predatory capitalism which exploits.
