I am a major crocheter, and starting to knit more so these days just for a change.Ironically I took to English style of knitting for some reason, but I find it to be a bit slower when throwing. I'm sure your instruction is great for how to do knit stitch, etc., but you started with a work in progress. I'm a longtime crocheter for many years and thought this would help me learn continental knitting, but you didn't start with casting on, so I have nothing to go on.
As a crocheter I have tried continental knitting, but the purl stitch has really thrown me. Your explanation is so clear, and I love it. Thank you for making it understandable and easy. I can see why you love purling so much! Now I’m going to try it again. I haven’t knitted for quite a while, and the purl stitch was my hurdle. I think I can do it now!
Continental style is indeed very similar with crocheting. I am a crocheter and I wanted to learn how to knit. And now I knit fast in just a few days of practice, thanks to continental style.

Thank you!!! I've been knitting for a month after years of crocheting. The knit stitch in continental was coming pretty easily and I found a purl menthol that worked, but wasn't efficient for switching back and forth between the two. That simple trick of yarn around the first two fingers instead of just the first was definitely the difference. Thank you!

thanks, I never understood why I favored the continental style over the others. I learned simple crocheting in 4-H horse class, we had to make our show saddle blankets many many years ago.
Hallelujah! I'm a 50 year+ crocheter, only been knitting for a few months. I decided to give continental yet ANOTHER try but purling was giving me absolute fits! Then I watched your video and the hint about putting the yarn over the index AND middle finger was a game changer, I'm now purling like a pro, lol. 😁
I have been crocheting for 7, 8 years. Love it. I tried kitting years ago and gave up. So this year I really want to give it a try again. To the life of me my hands just go not like the English style but the continental style is much easier. It's still hard but its doable. Now to practice,practice and practice more so I can develop hand memory for knitting, I learned crocheting very quickly, but kitting is very challenging for me. I have caught my self trying to do a double crochet while trying to knit.
Great video! I purl the same way except I use my left thumb in stead of index finger to hold the yarn out. It's so much easier as a crocheter to it this way, continental, and a lot faster too!
+pamelam4 I've seen purling done that way too. I tried it but it didn't stick. So interesting how creative people get in how to work with yarn. I totally agree about continental. The English style is something I'm trying to get better at so that I can teach both ways but I far prefer continental for my personal knitting.

I just watched your video Knitting for Crocheters. It was very good. You finally showed me what I was doing wrong holding the yarn. I did not drop the yarn to between my index finger and my ring finger. I was still holding it to crochet. That is why I could not figure out how to move the fingers right to do thepurl stitch. I've known how to crochet about 12 years& I've gotten faster at it. I just wanted to say thank you for posting this video because I tried learning how to knit a few years after learning how to crochet& it was really awkward for me because my left hand doesn't work right sometimes (it could be the simplest things like doing dishes) anyway I never knew there were different versions of knitting. The continental version looks a lot easier. Thanks again.
I'm not really good at either knitting or crocheting but have tried many times and set it aside. Now, I'm determined. I like the continental style and your video helped me catch on to the direction everything has to go. I'm one who's watched all those videos and it's really confusing but, I've decided that I want the stitches to turn out like they do when I throw. Your instructions lead to that result so, although, I hold my yarn a little differently, the direction I pick is the same. Now I want to make the purl stitch a littl simpler. I was always a knitter (English) but over last 3yrs learnt crochet through TH-cam. I’ve since started a crochet/knit group in church and I’ve found if someone already knits it’s easier for them to learn to crochet holding the yarn like knitting, something my mum always did and wouldn’t even try my way ha. But for complete needlecraft beginners they learn the proper crochet way. Although I tell them there’s no wrong way you just find what’s comfortable for you. I lost my love of knitting when I started crochet but this continental way gives me that wee itch that I need to scratch. Gona hoke out the knitting needles now. Thanks
I didn’t realize there were different ways to purl using the continental style of knitting. I was doing my purl stitch like you do, and it is easier than how it was taught on another video tutorial. Guess those who learned how to crochet first think alike.
"Learn to knit with a crochet brain" !! Brilliant! I've been a crocheter and took up knitting again after barely learning it years ago. I learned continental style - but find that I wrap the yarn the other way around due to the way I grab yarn with the crochet hook (from underneath) It feels impossible to switch to grabbing the yarn the other way around when I knit. However, I figure if the knit and purl are both "backwards' then it cancels out. My knitting comes out looking normal. Thanks so much for a great video.
Thank you for your clear tutorial, I have been trying to do continental for ages and gave up. I found your method interesting and very useful. I crochet too and never thought of using my yarn carrying hand the same as when I crochet. Also thank you for the suggestion of practicing on bigger needles, I did try yesterday on the sock I was knitting and of course it was UK size 2.25 and with sock yarn, so will be having a go with your method later. I recently began doing Continental using the Norwegian purl (I’m a crocheter) I usually use English Combination but Continental is so much faster. I found that wrapping the yarn clockwise as I do in crochet is even faster and more comfortable; the only “problem” is that your stitches are mounted “backwards” with the forwards leg one the back of the needle. This just means you knit into the “back” leg so occasionally you have to adjust patterns or flip your stitches such as “ssk” and “k2tog” are flip-flopped. If you are a crocheter or just want to knit faster it would definitely suggest trying the method, although it may require some notation on your patterns.

i just came across your video and i love it. I have been crocheting for 45+years and knitting for almost as long but not continuously. i am a "thrower" in knitting and just recently am trying to learn continental style AGAIN. i found it very awkward to hold the yarn until someone told me it was "okay" to hold it like a crocheter. It made a HUGE difference! still having an issue with tension. when my stitch comes off the needle it seems very loose coming off as opposed to doing it the other way.no one will tell me why it seems to feel so different and why the stitch looks a little different after doing several rows.

I knit English - but I enjoy purling much more too. What I don't get is why some ppl find it easier to do Norwegian purling than straight Continental purling. Oh well - to each their own. Thanks for the video, I'm just finishing up a pair of socks and like to listen to knitting videos. lol

Now, I've got pretty good at purling (pretty good is relative. lol.) I figured out the Norwegian style and it was super awkward at first but, I'm determined to not have to hold my first finger, pointer finger, up in the air and work it back and forth. I don't want to get repetitive motion injuries. Been there. It also means I don't have to move the yarn from back to front to go from knitting to purling. The yarn is always at the back. I also pick my knit stitch off my finger tip of the left hand, so that relaxes the fingers. The Norwegian purl stitch is a miracle, for me. It helps to be able to do it like you do and switch to the Norwegian purl, as it gives the hands alternative ways to move. Can you tell, I'm excited? Haha. Doesn't take much... It's ok to laugh. I'm laughing my head off. I'm also switching back and forth to a crocheting project. Thanks for showing us how you do it.
I agree, the norwegian purl (prefer ‘skandinavian purl, though, as I’m danish and that is how we all knit here 🙃) gives a better flow as you are shifting the greater movements from your left fingers to your right wrist. This allows you to knit much faster... with practice, of course 😊

As you were explaining the knit stitch I was thinking of how I learned to handle everything. I thought of it as a "triangle of tautness". There needs to be just enough tension between yarn the yarn feed on yer finger and the 2 needles with yer project on 'em to be able to work the needles without loops sneaking off and because you certainly can get lost if you're a beginner and don't really know what's what and where it's s'posed to go...when something goes wrong, then you have to play frog and "rippit, rippit" out and take a "do-over"!
That's funny. I learned to crochet first, and then to knit. However, I can only knit with the yarn in my right hand even though I crochet holding it with my left.
This made me realize that despite being left handed, I've been crocheting right handed because I was taught by a right handed person. I'll try this today, my tension has been nuts!

Yes! I’ve just learned about lifelines from the same channel. What a genius idea. Correcting with crochet is so easy. In knitting, I undo stitches one at a time on my needle. But a mistake before that row that IS so hard.
Ashley Hudson i’ve always felt like i get nearer stitches with wood and bamboo and prefer it but know i knit almost solely with interchangeable circular needles and i got an inexpensive set that are all aluminum. someday though
I think this must be true. This is my first attempt at knitting and I'm using aluminum and getting so frustrated by a bunch of loops sliding off many times. I have ordered some bamboo needles and hopefully they will help me
The hardest time I'm having with learning to knit as a crocheter is moving the fabric down the main needle onto the working needle after I've gotten the yarn through the stitch. The motion of having to push the stitches from one to the other feels very foreign and awkward for me, nearly uncomfortable. Are there any suggestions on how to make it feel more natural? Or is it just a matter of doing it over and over again until it becomes natural? I have the misfortune of being somewhat impatient with these things, so I find myself getting a bit frustrated at times.
+Wellington Sodre Jr I think it's a matter of finding the right rhythm for you. When I started, it got quite annoying to have to constantly move the stitches up the needle into working position but I just needed to find the repetitive motion that was acceptable to me. The nice thing is that, in knitting, you know exactly where the stitches are 😊
I learned to crochet when I was 7 (I'm over 50, now). I've tried many times to learn how to knit, and I've always failed, even trying to knit the continental way I failed. I understand how to make the knit and purl stitch, but somehow my tension is messed up, and no one can figure out how to help me fix it. I have one end that is 'tight' like it's supposed to be, but the other end gets loose. And the more I knit, the looser the one end gets, until my stitches literally fall of the needle. Or the knitting falls apart. No one can seem to recreated what I'm doing, so they can't help me fix it. Would you have any ideas?
S D McDaniel keep knitting even its not good, it cames by time , your body will get used and by time your stitchs will be nice and you will be faster, don’t stop thats the secret
Have you tried using smaller needles than your yarn recommends? I have a friend who knits very loosely and if she’s using yarn that recommends size 5 needles, she will use a size 3 to get the stitches tight enough. Also, using a chunkier yarn helped me when I was learning because I find it easier to work with. Hope that helps!
@@lauradelrey2903 See, this is the part that no one seems to understand. It's only the END stitches that get really loose. The body of my stitches are fine, not too tight, not too loose, but the stitches at EITHER END of my work get really loose. And until I can figure out how and why my knitting does that, I can't fix it... which means knitting is just out for me.
@@sdmcdaniel2255 omg i’m the same way… my start and end basically my side stitches are always so loose but everything else is fine. i also am an avid crocheter. knitting is driving me crazy lol
If I had to push left needle to release stitch as you do for every stitch, I’d have a hole in my index finger as I use sharper needles than you do... I do everything the same as you, but I just pull old stitch off. Well done video!

I have a question, I am new to knitting and have watched a LOT of videos all showing the same basic way to do a knit stitch. I follow them and do exactly what they do, just like your video, but mine do not have that V look. Mine is bumpy and more like a wavy line and I don't understand why. It's not looking bad necessarily but not anything like I want it to look, I want it to look like the ones your are making. Could you tell me what I may be doing wrong?
Your stitches may be “twisted”. This means that they are oriented opposite to what is needed to get the V. This varies depending on the knitting method used, but my stitches have the right leg in the front. Check to see if your left leg is in the front. Twisted stitches can happen for different reasons. The most common being how you wrap your yarn to make your purl stitches. Play around with this and see if it helps.
It could be perhaps that you are doing a garter stitch which is knit stitch every row. Where as here she is doing a stockinette stitch which is knit a row purl a row. The front or right side will be all the knit stitches and the wrong side will the side that you purled.
I've crocheted for years & have tried for a year to knit & can't do it yet. Did you say when you had all the stitches onto the right needle you then switched that needle over to your left hand?
What about casting on? I've learned to knit and crochet at the age of 6. Stopped knitting around the age of 20 but continued to crochet to this day (I found it was faster for me). So it's been over 20+ years since I knitted and I find it difficult to cast on. Do you have any videos on that subject?

3 channels that may help : 1 Very pink knit 2 Knit studio But they use English method. 3 Expression fiber arts who is a crocheter that knits continental style.
I'm not sure if this will answer your question, but I've tried using standard stick needles with Continental knitting. While I was able to achieve stitches, the tension was off, and stitches were inconsistent. Because twisting the needles for Continental style, places more weight on the wrist, when there's a long arm of a needle you have to bring with you. Circular needles on the other hand, are more ergonomic for the Continental style. Because they're short, and virtually weightless, considering the length between the two points, is thin, plastic cable. In a nutshell, if you're using Continental style knitting, it's best to use circular needles. Making all fabrics capable of being knitted with circular needles. I personally won't try Continental style knitting with standard stick needles again.
I believe so, yes. Circulars give you more length room & more options but absolutely can be used exactly like straight needles; just don't connect the two ends. Go back & forth like straight ones. I think this is what you were asking.
Hmmm, I'm just working along doing what you did in the first part of the video, what's supposed to be knit stitch, but both sides of what I've done look like purl... I have no clue. I've done this and pulled it out three times... hope I figure it out bc I want one side to look like knit
If you do one piece in all one type of stitch, it will look like what you described. If you want your piece to look knitted, you need to do the stockinette stitch, which is where you alternate knit and purl each row. So it'd be like row 1 is knit, row 2 is purl, row 3 is knit, row 4 is purl, and so on.
I found I waste a butt ton of yarn with the long tail cast on b/c I am crud at estimating the length I will need; or I end up shorting myself & starting over. My yarn budget is not unlimited so I have found a 2 needle type cast on (also known as a knit cast on) works best for me. Much less waste; If I am just doing something easy peasy (scarf) I will use a single cast on. Hope this helps.
Don't give up! I've been crocheting since I was 7. It took me a lot of failed attempts to learn to knit, but it was worth sticking with it. I have a video on my channel with some other advice for crocheters on how to knit if you'd like to check it out. :-)
Yeah you're not alone. I've learned crochet and there is nothing similar to me about crochet and knitting. The one thing I am learning, is that the middle finger plays a large part in moving the yarn to the correct "scooping" place. Still struggling 😔
I am a crocheter and haven't knitted for years. I have wanted to learn the European knitting and thought it would be easy for me. But it isn't. I was surprised how much trouble I have had with this style of knitting.
Fumble Bunny Ive tried continental. Since I’m a crocheter, I can hold the yarn the same way. While throwing, I take my hand off the needle to move the yarn, which I never see on TH-cam. But...my stitches look nice and I enjoy knitting that way. Thank you☺️
+DCFunBud Since the tip is tapered, it can pull the yarn through. Make sure your tension isn't so tight that the yarn isn't moving. That would cause the yarn to just fall off. Hope this helps!
DCFunBud I have that problem too sometimes. It helps to use plastic or wood needles with more "grab" than metallic needles until you're ready to speed up your stitching. It's also important to use your index finger to hold the wrapped yarn on the needle until it's passed through the loop during a knit stitch AND to pass the new stitch securely onto the shaft of the other needle : )
I recommend bamboo needles to beginning knitter's because the stitches are less likely to slide off the needle. As you get better and in more control, I would recommend plastic and finally metal. I started in metal and was so frustrated; I gave up many times because a chunk of stitches was dump off. But I knew that I wanted to knit because my Mom made such beautiful clothing.
My knitting has vastly improved. I use the English method because it is more deliberate and slow. Also, I prefer metal needles because it is easier to slip off the stitch. Many thanks for the advice.
Wow! Changing from metal needles just might be what I need. I learned in 3rd grade and have “thrown” my yarn for 51years! I just can’t seem to do it any other way. “Flicking” is very hard for me. I hold my yarn to crochet just like her and it’s very comfortable. Long story short, I need to abandon metal needles as I learn continental.
I've crocheted for over 30 years now, and I've tried learning how to knit. I've noticed one issue I have that hopefully you can solve. The beginning of any fabric I knit, is exceedingly loose...to the point where it starts to fall apart. I also tend to hold my yarn in my off hand. Any ideas?
What do you mean exactly when you say it falls apart? If I understand the problem better, maybe I can help you. I teach knitting and crochet, but I was a crocheter first.

Thank you!!! I've been knitting for a month after years of crocheting. The knit stitch in continental was coming pretty easily and I found a purl menthol that worked, but wasn't efficient for switching back and forth between the two. That simple trick of yarn around the first two fingers instead of just the first was definitely the difference. Thank you!

There are different ways of purling with the continental style. Do a TH-cam search for the other ways. Maybe one of them would work better for you.
I have been crocheting for 7, 8 years. Love it. I tried kitting years ago and gave up. So this year I really want to give it a try again. To the life of me my hands just go not like the English style but the continental style is much easier. It's still hard but its doable. Now to practice,practice and practice more so I can develop hand memory for knitting, I learned crocheting very quickly, but kitting is very challenging for me. I have caught my self trying to do a double crochet while trying to knit.
Great video! I purl the same way except I use my left thumb in stead of index finger to hold the yarn out. It's so much easier as a crocheter to it this way, continental, and a lot faster too!

The English style is something I'm trying to get better at so that I can teach both ways but I far prefer continental for my personal knitting.

I did not drop the yarn to between my index finger and my ring finger. I was still holding it to crochet. That is why I could not figure out how to move the fingers right to do thepurl stitch. I just wanted to say thank you for posting this video because I tried learning how to knit a few years after learning how to crochet& it was really awkward for me because my left hand doesn't work right sometimes (it could be the simplest things like doing dishes) anyway I never knew there were different versions of knitting. I'm not really good at either knitting or crocheting but have tried many times and set it aside. Now, I'm determined. I like the continental style and your video helped me catch on to the direction everything has to go. I'm one who's watched all those videos and it's really confusing but, I've decided that I want the stitches to turn out like they do when I throw. Your instructions lead to that result so, although, I hold my yarn a little differently, the direction I pick is the same. Now I want to make the purl stitch a littl simpler. I was always a knitter (English) but over last 3yrs learnt crochet through TH-cam. I’ve since started a crochet/knit group in church and I’ve found if someone already knits it’s easier for them to learn to crochet holding the yarn like knitting, something my mum always did and wouldn’t even try my way ha. But for complete needlecraft beginners they learn the proper crochet way. Although I tell them there’s no wrong way you just find what’s comfortable for you. I lost my love of knitting when I started crochet but this continental way gives me that wee itch that I need to scratch. Gona hoke out the knitting needles now. Thanks
I didn’t realize there were different ways to purl using the continental style of knitting. I was doing my purl stitch like you do, and it is easier than how it was taught on another video tutorial. Guess those who learned how to crochet first think alike.
"Learn to knit with a crochet brain" !! Brilliant! I've been a crocheter and took up knitting again after barely learning it years ago. I learned continental style - but find that I wrap the yarn the other way around due to the way I grab yarn with the crochet hook (from underneath) It feels impossible to switch to grabbing the yarn the other way around when I knit. However, I figure if the knit and purl are both "backwards' then it cancels out. My knitting comes out looking normal. Thanks so much for a great video.

I recently began doing Continental using the Norwegian purl (I’m a crocheter) I usually use English Combination but Continental is so much faster. I found that wrapping the yarn clockwise as I do in crochet is even faster and more comfortable; the only “problem” is that your stitches are mounted “backwards” with the forwards leg one the back of the needle. This just means you knit into the “back” leg so occasionally you have to adjust patterns or flip your stitches such as “ssk” and “k2tog” are flip-flopped. If you are a crocheter or just want to knit faster it would definitely suggest trying the method, although it may require some notation on your patterns.

i just came across your video and i love it. I have been crocheting for 45+years and knitting for almost as long but not continuously. i am a "thrower" in knitting and just recently am trying to learn continental style AGAIN. i found it very awkward to hold the yarn until someone told me it was "okay" to hold it like a crocheter. It made a HUGE difference! still having an issue with tension. when my stitch comes off the needle it seems very loose coming off as opposed to doing it the other way.no one will tell me why it seems to feel so different and why the stitch looks a little different after doing several rows.

I knit English - but I enjoy purling much more too. What I don't get is why some ppl find it easier to do Norwegian purling than straight Continental purling. Oh well - to each their own.

Now, I've got pretty good at purling (pretty good is relative. lol.) I figured out the Norwegian style and it was super awkward at first but, I'm determined to not have to hold my first finger, pointer finger, up in the air and work it back and forth. I don't want to get repetitive motion injuries. Been there. It also means I don't have to move the yarn from back to front to go from knitting to purling. The yarn is always at the back. I also pick my knit stitch off my finger tip of the left hand, so that relaxes the fingers. The Norwegian purl stitch is a miracle, for me. It helps to be able to do it like you do and switch to the Norwegian purl, as it gives the hands alternative ways to move. Can you tell, I'm excited? Haha. Doesn't take much... It's ok to laugh. I'm laughing my head off. I'm also switching back and forth to a crocheting project. Thanks for showing us how you do it.

I agree, the norwegian purl (prefer ‘skandinavian purl, though, as I’m danish and that is how we all knit here 🙃) gives a better flow as you are shifting the greater movements from your left fingers to your right wrist. This allows you to knit much faster... with practice, of course 😊

As you were explaining the knit stitch I was thinking of how I learned to handle everything. I thought of it as a "triangle of tautness". There needs to be just enough tension between yarn the yarn feed on yer finger and the 2 needles with yer project on 'em to be able to work the needles without loops sneaking off and because you certainly can get lost if you're a beginner and don't really know what's what and where it's s'posed to go...when something goes wrong, then you have to play frog and "rippit, rippit" out and take a "do-over"!

Yes! I’ve just learned about lifelines from the same channel. What a genius idea. Correcting with crochet is so easy. In knitting, I undo stitches one at a time on my needle. But a mistake before that row that IS so hard.

I don't know if it helps anyone, but I much prefer wood/bamboo over aluminum needles. I feel like metal needles are too slippery and noisey.

I think this must be true. This is my first attempt at knitting and I'm using aluminum and getting so frustrated by a bunch of loops sliding off many times. I have ordered some bamboo needles and hopefully they will help me
The hardest time I'm having with learning to knit as a crocheter is moving the fabric down the main needle onto the working needle after I've gotten the yarn through the stitch. The motion of having to push the stitches from one to the other feels very foreign and awkward for me, nearly uncomfortable. Are there any suggestions on how to make it feel more natural? Or is it just a matter of doing it over and over again until it becomes natural?
I have the misfortune of being somewhat impatient with these things, so I find myself getting a bit frustrated at times.
+Wellington Sodre Jr I think it's a matter of finding the right rhythm for you. When I started, it got quite annoying to have to constantly move the stitches up the needle into working position but I just needed to find the repetitive motion that was acceptable to me. The nice thing is that, in knitting, you know exactly where the stitches are 😊

I learned to crochet when I was 7 (I'm over 50, now). I've tried many times to learn how to knit, and I've always failed, even trying to knit the continental way I failed. I understand how to make the knit and purl stitch, but somehow my tension is messed up, and no one can figure out how to help me fix it. I have one end that is 'tight' like it's supposed to be, but the other end gets loose. And the more I knit, the looser the one end gets, until my stitches literally fall of the needle. Or the knitting falls apart. No one can seem to recreated what I'm doing, so they can't help me fix it. Would you have any ideas?
S D McDaniel keep knitting even its not good, it cames by time , your body will get used and by time your stitchs will be nice and you will be faster, don’t stop thats the secret
Have you tried using smaller needles than your yarn recommends? I have a friend who knits very loosely and if she’s using yarn that recommends size 5 needles, she will use a size 3 to get the stitches tight enough. Also, using a chunkier yarn helped me when I was learning because I find it easier to work with. Hope that helps!
@@lauradelrey2903 See, this is the part that no one seems to understand. It's only the END stitches that get really loose. The body of my stitches are fine, not too tight, not too loose, but the stitches at EITHER END of my work get really loose. And until I can figure out how and why my knitting does that, I can't fix it... which means knitting is just out for me.

If I had to push left needle to release stitch as you do for every stitch, I’d have a hole in my index finger as I use sharper needles than you do... I do everything the same as you, but I just pull old stitch off. Well done video!

I have a question, I am new to knitting and have watched a LOT of videos all showing the same basic way to do a knit stitch. I follow them and do exactly what they do, just like your video, but mine do not have that V look. Mine is bumpy and more like a wavy line and I don't understand why. It's not looking bad necessarily but not anything like I want it to look, I want it to look like the ones your are making. Could you tell me what I may be doing wrong?
Your stitches may be “twisted”. This means that they are oriented opposite to what is needed to get the V. This varies depending on the knitting method used, but my stitches have the right leg in the front. Check to see if your left leg is in the front. Twisted stitches can happen for different reasons. The most common being how you wrap your yarn to make your purl stitches. Play around with this and see if it helps.

It could be perhaps that you are doing a garter stitch which is knit stitch every row. Where as here she is doing a stockinette stitch which is knit a row purl a row. The front or right side will be all the knit stitches and the wrong side will the side that you purled.

What about casting on? I've learned to knit and crochet at the age of 6. Stopped knitting around the age of 20 but continued to crochet to this day (I found it was faster for me). So it's been over 20+ years since I knitted and I find it difficult to cast on. Do you have any videos on that subject?

I'm not sure if this will answer your question, but I've tried using standard stick needles with Continental knitting. While I was able to achieve stitches, the tension was off, and stitches were inconsistent. Because twisting the needles for Continental style, places more weight on the wrist, when there's a long arm of a needle you have to bring with you. Circular needles on the other hand, are more ergonomic for the Continental style. Because they're short, and virtually weightless, considering the length between the two points, is thin, plastic cable.
In a nutshell, if you're using Continental style knitting, it's best to use circular needles. Making all fabrics capable of being knitted with circular needles. I personally won't try Continental style knitting with standard stick needles again.
I believe so, yes. Circulars give you more length room & more options but absolutely can be used exactly like straight needles; just don't connect the two ends. Go back & forth like straight ones. I think this is what you were asking.

If you do one piece in all one type of stitch, it will look like what you described. If you want your piece to look knitted, you need to do the stockinette stitch, which is where you alternate knit and purl each row. So it'd be like row 1 is knit, row 2 is purl, row 3 is knit, row 4 is purl, and so on.

I found I waste a butt ton of yarn with the long tail cast on b/c I am crud at estimating the length I will need; or I end up shorting myself & starting over. My yarn budget is not unlimited so I have found a 2 needle type cast on (also known as a knit cast on) works best for me. Much less waste; If I am just doing something easy peasy (scarf) I will use a single cast on. Hope this helps.

Yeah you're not alone. I've learned crochet and there is nothing similar to me about crochet and knitting. The one thing I am learning, is that the middle finger plays a large part in moving the yarn to the correct "scooping" place. Still struggling 😔

Fumble Bunny Ive tried continental. Since I’m a crocheter, I can hold the yarn the same way. While throwing, I take my hand off the needle to move the yarn, which I never see on TH-cam. But...my stitches look nice and I enjoy knitting that way. Thank you☺️

+DCFunBud Since the tip is tapered, it can pull the yarn through. Make sure your tension isn't so tight that the yarn isn't moving. That would cause the yarn to just fall off. Hope this helps!
DCFunBud I have that problem too sometimes. It helps to use plastic or wood needles with more "grab" than metallic needles until you're ready to speed up your stitching. It's also important to use your index finger to hold the wrapped yarn on the needle until it's passed through the loop during a knit stitch AND to pass the new stitch securely onto the shaft of the other needle : )
I recommend bamboo needles to beginning knitter's because the stitches are less likely to slide off the needle. As you get better and in more control, I would recommend plastic and finally metal. I started in metal and was so frustrated; I gave up many times because a chunk of stitches was dump off. But I knew that I wanted to knit because my Mom made such beautiful clothing.
My knitting has vastly improved. I use the English method because it is more deliberate and slow. Also, I prefer metal needles because it is easier to slip off the stitch. Many thanks for the advice.
Wow! Changing from metal needles just might be what I need. I learned in 3rd grade and have “thrown” my yarn for 51years! I just can’t seem to do it any other way. “Flicking” is very hard for me. I hold my yarn to crochet just like her and it’s very comfortable. Long story short, I need to abandon metal needles as I learn continental.
I've crocheted for over 30 years now, and I've tried learning how to knit. I've noticed one issue I have that hopefully you can solve. The beginning of any fabric I knit, is exceedingly loose...to the point where it starts to fall apart. I also tend to hold my yarn in my off hand. Any ideas?
Have you tried different cast-on methods?
What do you mean exactly when you say it falls apart? If I understand the problem better, maybe I can help you. I teach knitting and crochet, but I was a crocheter first.
