Cocoa POD to CHOCOLATE Bar -- How to Make A DIY Bean-to-Chocolate Bar at Home

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 24 ก.พ. 2019
- It all started with a mystery box of fruit which lead me down the path of making a bar of #chocolate from a cocoa pod. 😮 So here's all the steps, including fermenting, drying, roasting, winnowing, crushing, grinding, conching, tempering, molding, and finally EATING my pod-to-chocolate bar. 😅 Big thanks to my boys, for always being game. 💕 New videos every Thursday and Saturday 8 pm EST.

dairy milk chocolate is the best x
I Been watching you Emmy for a few years now,And always like your work but this Blew it all apart.I was so waiting for this video after your Chocolate prep video.Congratulations for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very Very cool! Stay well.73
My personal favorite is a classic Milky Way. I allow myself one a month lol
You’re amazing!
emmymadeinjapan first of all HELLO fellow New Englander! How are you liking the tornado force winds today? Did you also have to chase your garbage bin down the road? LOL Second Of all, you son is so friggin cute and it’s soooo sweet that you included them in this💜 such a great mom and teacher.
I'm just sitting here thinking like how the hell did humans figure out how to make chocolate.. It's such a complicated process.. How in the hell did the first chocolate bar get made??????
Those Myans were epic.
@@bodyofhope They actually didn't make chocolate bars. They grounded it up and mixed it with water and spices as a drink. Chocolate was for the longest part of its history consumed as a beverage.
The first chocolate bar was made in the middle of the 19th century.

Mary M mayans were long gone when the Spaniards arrived
Same. And also thinking about all the undiscovered beans in the world and what their potential is
I love how you talk to your kid like a human person and not a child. Really does help them become wonderful people
the fuck is a child if not a human person then
i asked my mom why the sky was blue and then she started abt electrons when i was 5.
@barb rarick And now the Japanese have a big problem with hikikomori.
@barb rarick Babytalk is actually an extremely essential part of child language acquisition and without it children would not be able to learn how to speak nearly as fluently or easily. Please do some actual research.
LLCHDK have you heard the phrase “children should be seen, not heard” or listened too. Basically, people don’t treat children as if they have maturity, and don’t take what they say seriously. And people refrain from using basic decent vocabulary because they don’t want to go through the trouble of actually explaining what words mean
“This cocoa bean is hawd” that was pretty darn cute not gonna lie.
Oh hey, fellow Belcher lover.
Sounds like he's from Boston.
lol! true
I came to the comments to see if anyone else loved it!❤

Nutella is just european answer to peanutbutter...
@@Whydoyoureadme peanut butter is trash though..
does that actually work tho 💀 might have to try it that sounds good actually
Try imported Nutella.
I went to culinary school, in the baking department we did weeks of chocolate and NONE of the chef instructors or textbooks explained tempering as well as you just did. I frickin love you.
I swear I would have gotten better grades if she had a been a teacher at my old school! Lol
Let that be a lesson to ya! You learn tons more outside of school if you search for knowledge relentlessly. Finding it on your own is much more rewarding
I know right?! I went to culinary school as well, and would go home at night and watch Good Eats, and would get a better explanation for stuff than from. The instructors at school.
Schools are indoctrination stations, not learning facilities
Johnson and Wales anyone?💁🏽♀️
Thanks for the mention Emmy, if you're ever in Australia let me know 😀
You’re welcome! Will do!!

Do a collab video it will be awesome i love you u both!❤❤❤
I love seeing other youtubers giving each other credit and supporting one another. It's just really nice to see.
Damn this makes me appreciate the chocolate bar alot more for its texture and taste. Must take loads of work especially for someone who had to pioneer the chocolate bar
It takes a LOT of work and is a huge cause for exploitation for many people.
And unfortunately, slave labor is used in a lot of cacao bean farming, which is all done near the equator in extremely hot locations.
@@caterpillar1936 you okay, bud?
@@Cat-qn7pm Theo Chocolate is different though with their chocolate. All organic and fair trade! 👌
Your little boy is so precious and smart, I could’ve listened to him talk endlessly! Thank you for being such a good mom to your children.

Emmy, you need your own Netflix show!
YES !!
That would be fun
Yes!!
Yes and sonny from the best ever food review show they both need their own show on netflix
You mean, Netflix needs Emmy. Or mutually they should work together.
Yup. I could totally see that. Maybe after her kids are a bit more grown, thought. Doing a tv series requires way more, in so many ways, including working with all the other people involved, etc.
I personally prefer TH-camrs stay here, and keep that vlog style, real life something that very polished tv series loose, unless they work at keeping it.
A bit more freedom, a bit more interactive.
But ultimately, each person choose as it fits into their life, what works for them.
“This coco bean is hard” I can’t handle the cuteness 😭😭😭😭❤️
Golden Girl Jay My sole reason for coming to the comments was to see if someone else loves this exact part as much as I did 😂😂😂 I paused the video just to look

I will never again conplain about the cost of chocolate and will savour the next bar. I never knew it was such a process. This was educational for sure.
“Did anyone die in Paddington?” SO precious!!!
Damarion Session RIGHT!!!
Whats in paddington?
@@morganmorales9474 it is a book and movie series about a bear named Paddington from Peru who travels to England and is adopted by a family there. He also has a very unhealthy addiction to marmalade.
@@skillet7173 lol, I have an unhealthy addiction to marmalade too.
@@skillet7173 I remember I read a children's book with a different rendition of the paddington story. In the book paddington was in a toy store at a mall, but no one ever wanted to buy him bc he had a missing button, so one day he snuck out of the toy store to explore the mall. He found a store that sells comforters I believe, and he decided to take one of the buttons off of one of the comforters (after rolling around on the fluffy bed like a cutie)😭) then he got adopted. I have no idea why I remember this book in such detail because I havent read it since I was a small child, but this is the story I always knew so when I saw the paddington movies I was confused at first😭
The way Emmy reacted to getting the chocolate bars out of the tray give me pure joy 😂❤️

omg her excitement after the chocolate released from the mold is so PURE AND ADORABLE
I love how you talk to your boys like you’d talk to anyone else, without a bunch of baby talk. Lol My parents spoke to me in that manner growing up and it made me feel like my parents took me much more seriously 😄
Plus baby talk kids can be creepy. I know a few teenage girls who still talk in baby talk at work and refer to their parents and mama and daddy
Jes Greenwood That sounds disturbing
My son is 2 and a half and i barely baby talk to him and i can tell he appreciates being spoken to like anyone else :)
Hello! Student of Speech-Language Pathology here. I just wanted to share something. What you're referring to (pitch modifications/"baby talk") is also called child-directed speech. According to some studies, it's actually beneficial for infants to acquire language. Speaking with full, grammatical sentences is beneficial, too :)
@@DaxG-qp3jf lol where I'm from most ppl say Mummy and Daddy for life 😊
The husk, or shell of the cacao beans makes an AMAZING ice tea. Prepare as you would any loose tea, sweeten it, add a squeeze of lime and chill. Its sooo good.
The nibs are also a great source of protein. They taste great in granola or trail mix.
Hol up… You can eat the shell too?

I love steeping cacao husk tea with some sugar and adding a splash of milk at the end for a more complex tasting choccy milk. Great stuff!

I totally agree! I love people like her 💕
this might be the most beautiful chocolate bar i’ve ever seen
That was so great to watch Emmy. I love that you dont sugar coat anything and you are, at the end of the day, your own biggest critic. Im truly inspired by you. Keep up the great work, you are fantastic girl x
HER GETTING EXCITED AT THE MOULD RELEASE GIVE ME LIFE
it is soo exciting!
I WAS JUST THINKING THAT OMFG 😂😂
If I may speak for all 1.3 million of us, we are SO proud of you for this. That is an excruciatingly tedious process, and you cut only one understandable corner. Bravo, Our Lovely! (And we love your litl'bit!)
This brings back memories, I grew up eating these Cocoa pods; we had a bunch in our yard. The kids would eat the fruit, then the bean would be collected in a wooden basket to dry in the sun so it'll be ready to be made into homemade chocolates
Your reaction to the bar coming out of the mold is so pure and wholesome

Emmy is around my parents age and she gives off such a genuinely kind energy that it feels like my own mom talking to me. Guess being an actual mom helps with that too lol

I love how you get so excited when everything you make comes out perfect. You have a beautiful spirit.
"This one comes from Peru, the same place Paddington comes from" ahhhh I love it haha
When I was a child my dad used to make me tea from the shell of the cacao beans. It tasted just like chocolate.
Sounds really cool! I'd like to see Emmy try this.
How was it made, did he just soak the beans in hot water?
How is it made?
Two years later 🙂
How was it made?
that was a really raw, unfiltered, and accurate peek into the life of a parent of a 4 year old
I zoned out when she was describing how to temper chocolate whilst drinking my homemade mocha from %100 cocoa powder. In that moment I appreciated the fact that I didn't have to ferment, roast and grind beans for the cocoa in my drink.
Nobody remembers the day Emmy crossed the line into insanity. When the courts asked how nobody saw it coming, everyone just said it was a slow transition
Believe me, when I was turning cocoa beans in my food dehydrator at 1 am, I was thinking the exact thing. 😂

Mine is toast. Jk. Probably my first really good cooked steak.
I actually appreciate hearing that things didn’t turn out exactly like a commercially produced chocolate bar. For those of us who care about the process it’s nice to know where things can be improved and what techniques worked well and what didn’t.
Seeing you teaching your kids facts about the cocoa made me smile 😊 your kids are lucky to have you as their mom! 😊

Sis DID THAT Emmy you are straight up legendary. So SO much love for you.
Took the words RIGHT out of my mouth. Talk about TH-cam 🐐!
Hi! I work at the SPAM museum in Austin Minnesota and there are actually 16 different varieties of SPAM, including three flavors that are only available in Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. I would love to send them to you and you can taste them in a video? Anyway I love your channel!
I did not even know a SPAM museum existed till your comment. That sounds pretty cool what kind of exhibits do they have or it just like how they make SPAM etc.?
We have a lot of exhibits, you should check out our website! Just google spam museum!
Hi! I know I'm not Emmy, but I believe if you go into the "about" section on her TH-cam channel page, she has a mailing address listed for any lovelies who want to send her stuff. If she doesn't reply to you herself you could probably mail it to her with a note inside asking if she would make a video with the Spam and I'm sure she probably would!
P.S. - a Spam museum sounds pretty freaking cool. I bet that's a super fun job!
Please send them to her! I think it would be really awesome to see. I didn’t know other flavors existed.
I’ve lived in Minnesota my whole life and didn’t know this existed 😱

“Did somebody say chwocolate?”
THEY'RE SELLING CHWOCOLATES!!!!
Talk about "made from scratch" chocolate! This was definitely one of my favorite projects you've done Emmy! I think you did a great job! 😊
Now I totally understand why good chocolate is so expensive! Makes me appreciate it all the more. Thanks for this fantastic learning experience!
Her happiness while taking the chocolate bar out of the mold is like winning 1 million dollar lottery.
That chocolate bar was so gorgeous!! I loved the shine. I was so disappointed it wasn't as perfect as Emmy wanted.
It's crazy that a chocolate bar doesn't cost $50 considering how far it has to travel and the long process it goes through, same with coffee. Somewhere along the line there's people getting royaly screwed over, hint... it's not the manufacturers!
This is the honest truth. There's a reason why some nations and small countries are still living in 3rd world conditions while they work every day. It's no stretch of the imagination to see that cheap chocolate comes from human beings working for third world pay.
That being said, I'll be damned if I don't love a good snickers bar
Yeah some people are getting screwed over but considering how much is done by machines I'm not surprised chocolate is cheap now. What sends chills down my spine is what likely happened to people in the past for products like this.
@@Quickblood1 The mechanical portion of chocolate making comes further down the line. But the farming, collection, fermenting and packaging is all still done by hand. It's a tedious process, and the people that do the jobs are certainly paid very little for us to have chocolate confections for little money.
I'm also sure most chocolate bars have a lot additives which makes a small amount of cacao go a long way
@@alysia2046 The cheaper bars use vegetable oil and hydrogenated vegetable fat as a bulking agent, along with lots of corn syrup. The higher quality chocolate doesn't use bulking agents, but it's still sourced from third world working conditions regardless. The only chocolate that can claim to at least /try/ to combat this issue would be the "Fair Trade" chocolate, and those aren't as readily available as the usual options.
Emmy would of been the perfect science teacher!!! Never seen her so exited! Great job Emmy.
I like the honest review at the end... She actually said that it isn't smoother and didn't snap as expected. We won't see this level of honesty in other videos
The amount of work you put into your videos is incredible. All the behind the scenes stuff we don’t see, especially, but it really makes your content so interesting and compelling. Plus your personality is just lovely. 🥰
Omg! I loove the little New England accent ~ "this cocoa bean is haaad".
I think that's just a kid not knowing how to pronounce their r's yet because his mom pronounces them without an accent
NE accent is more like "hAHd" vs her son being cute and saying "hawd"... because R's are hawd
Lol, to me all American accents sound the same 😂
S Mounir New York and any state in the south have noticeable accents
Dashaun not in Virginia... ain’t nobody got an accent here
I remember watching your videos when you only had 1 kid....then when you were pregnant. It’s so cute to hear your son’s conversation with you. Thanks for sharing it.
Dude I was watching her for over a year before she was even pregnant the first time! Hahahaha I feel so old
I love the conversation with your children ♥️. It so reminds me of the days my son was small and he would chat with me like this.
She’s the main person that knows how to use cocoa pods in the right way far better than anyone who pretends to think they know how chocolate is made based on what they heard about it or looked up its form. I admire how she’s trying to replicate what the Olmecs used to do for the earliest civilization with the process of chocolate and transitioning from learning a proper way to ferment cocoa seeds.
