This was actually Jackson's debut single, in 1972. He had so many great songs in the 70s, and you've done three of them. Next, you could do "Rock Me On the Water", "Here Come Those Tears Again", or "The Pretender". Or you could venture into his 80s catalogue, with bangers like "Boulevard", "Somebody's Baby", "Lawyers in Love", or "Tender is the Night". You really can't go wrong with JB. P.S. Can't believe this song is FIFTY YEARS OLD! P.P.S. Your two-year anniversary will be on March 31, 2023. I'll be there...

Lawyers in Love. Yes. Yes. He wrote it after his divorce. Great commentary on the 80s. Is it “That Girl Could Sing”. Great song too. Those are two of his more edgy songs.

You haven't heard Jackson Brown's "Stay" until you've heard it together with its long prelude, "The Load Out". The two go together to make one song, a
valentine to his road crew, his band, and his fans.
A Live version of above is a must as well.
Oh, I haven't seen their reaction to "Stay." I was hoping it was "The Loadout/Stay", but you're saying it's not? Bummer. I agree, "The Loadout" is the indispensable prelude. They need to do it again, with both songs.
@@toddstevens13 Absolutely! It's like the difference between studio and live versions of "Sultans Of Swing'' from Alchemy, or "Take It Easy" from a late 1970's Eagles concert. It's almost like the difference between seeing a picture of bread and enjoying it fresh from the oven.

The guitar solo on this song was played by a native American guitarist named Jesse Ed Davis from Norman, Oklahoma. Very underrated session guitarist.
Jackson Browne tells the story of how Jesse Ed Davis wound up on this record, in a great documentary called Rumble. They actually brought Davis in to play on a different song but when they ran the playback for him he said, . "I don't hear myself playing on this song. What else have you got?" They were a little taken aback but pulled out Doctor My Eyes for him to listen to. He said, "I can play on this one" and then (as someone here already pointed out) he ripped through the solo that's on the record. Not a bad day's work!

Sadly, Jesse Ed OD'd at only 43 after years in a doped-up wilderness. He had enormous potential, and did a lot of great work before his untimely end.

Jackson Browne wrote this song when he was 16 years old. Amazing talent. So many wonderful songs by him.
"Tender Is The Night" "These Days" and "Late For The Sky" will probably blow your hair back pretty good, too. JB is amazing.
The Pretender is another Jackson Brown classic with lesson in it. We used to do this in my band all the time. Jackson Browne co-wrote the Eagles hit "Take It Easy."
Bowne's version of "Take It Easy" is on the same album as "Doctor My Eyes," and it seamlessly blends into the next song on the album, "Our Lady of the Well." I highly recommend both songs.
Co-wrote is being a bit generous to Glenn Frey - Browne essentially had it mostly written but hadn't yet finished it, and after Frey's continual bugging, Browne gave him the ok to do so. Frey did a great job on it, but needed Brown's shoulders to stand on.

The Pretender is my fav. Flawless writing of the human condition.

Prior to The Eagles, Glenn Frey moved to LA where he met Jackson Browne and JD Souther among others. Jackson got Frey and Souther an apartment in his building directly above his. Of course, musicians are usually out late and not morning people. They would try to sleep in, but at 9am, they would hear Jackson's tea kettle whistling . Then, they'd hear Jackson playing piano and singing. He'd play, the opening, first verse and chorus over and over, changing it up a little, adding a lyric until he got it just right. Then, silence until the tea kettle whistled again. Then he'd do the same with the second verse, revisit the first verse again and the chorus over and over and over. It drove Glenn and JD crazy, but they were young and although they wanted to be song writers, they didn't know how to go about it. They listened, begrudgingly, to Jackson Browne write Doctor My Eyes, through the floor. Frey said "so that's how you do it, elbow grease, time, though, persistence".
I am 58 years old and this is one of my favorite songs that I have ever heard. I think of it as sometimes you stare into the Abyss, and the Abyss stares back...

Next stop: "The Pretender" or "Here Comes Those Tears Again". Jackson Brown is part of that SoCal sound of the '70s that gave us the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and a whole host of other acts. So great...so much a part of my young adulthood.

Jackson and Linda actually knew each other right from the early years, and have been close friends right through both their careers.
Jackson was part of a group of artists who hung out & and helped out on each other’s albums back in the 70’s… that included the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt & Dan Fogelberg.
On this great tune, David Crosby & Graham Nash sang backup.

Always, always pay attention to the lyrics of Jackson Browne (amidst all that great musicality!). Simple words that have profound emotion and meaning. "Late for the Sky" and "The Pretender" will devastate you…

There's a good reason Jackson Brown is still touring after 50 years - he's good - and people want to hear him do his thing.
The best way to really understand where Jackson Browne is coming from in a lot of his writing, listen to These Days. He wrote it when he was just 16, but it could easily have written by a much older, more seasoned man because of how well it makes you feel the depth of emotion in the song. Once you've really listened to These Days a few times, all of his work will start to make more sense when you consider the man who created it.

"Tender is the Night" is a great Jackson Browne song. I also would recommend for a more comic take his song "Lawyers in Love". In addition, I really enjoy his take on the song "Downtown". "The Pretender" a great song too. Oh yes, it seems each Jackson Browne fan has their own favorite tracks… because he touched us on very personal levels and affected us deeply. My favorites are “Before the Deluge”, “These Days” and “Fountain of Sorrow”. Each of these are on surface level ‘sad songs’ but they contain great truths and depth of feeling that you’ll rarely find. These are the songs that can carry you through tough times with grace and dignity. BTW, Doctor My Eyes is also a top personal favorite. Jackson is one of the best!

Agree. Everything from Late For The Sky could be described as a sad song, but also along with the truths and feeling there is a sort of steely optimism. He wrote most of these in the time following his wife's suicide. For A Dancer is my favorite from that one.

He hear Jackson play a few notes on his piano then waits, for his tea to steep.
Then after tea he’d hear his boots on the floor above, then Jackson would go back the the piano for the next part - over and over

Late for the Sky, great Album
Jessie Ed Davis was the one who did the lead on this song. He was an Indian blues player who toured with Taj Mahal and others whose career was shortened by drugs, but supposedly created this lead in about 15 minutes after listening to it on the phone. Also, in the documentary, MUSCLE SHOALS, according to Greg Allman, his brother Duane Allman learned the slide after listening to Jessie Ed Davis on a record.

Many professional working guitarists, including myself, will cite this solo as one of their favorites. Absolutely perfect.

God, I love Jackson Browne. So cool and laid back. Knew all the other cool, laid back musicians in the 70s. There are lots of stories about Jackson Browne doing interesting things with other musicians. After meeting SRV, Jackson offered his recording studio to Stevie and Double Trouble to record their first album so they took him up on it.

This song was released in March 1972. I was 13 and in 8th grade. Loved the song then, now at 64 I love it even more.
Everytime I hear this song I'm back in 3rd grade playing musical chairs 1973. Good times!
Here is another artist that was in Martin Scorsese's The Last Waltz. An awesome documentary/movie about The Band. This group back in the 60s and 70s played with the who's who of rock, blues and folk music. This is a must see for anyone who wants to know about our American history of music.

Jackson Brown had other hits and was a great lyricist and singer. However, imo this song stands out as exceptional, and not just among his own body of work. Listen to it again, and keep listening to it. It's deep, truthful, and just a magnificently executed piece of music. It's a special song, an all-time great in my estimation. Doctor My Eyes is one of my all time favorites !!! BTW - The Eagles had a hit with the song "Take it Easy" . It was Jackson Browne that began to write it then got stuck. Glenn Fry took it and started writing more with the lyrics "It's a girl my lord in a flat bed Ford" - When Glenn was starting out he live in an apartment either above or below Jackson. (Can't remember which) Glenn said that he learned how to work on creating a song because. he could hear the way Jackson did it.

When Jackson was starting out with fellow musicians in CA. he helped them come up with a group called Eagles. And yeah, his 80's tune "Somebody's Baby" for the movie Fast Times is another side of him.

Leland is just one of many members of The Wrecking Crew. He's played bass guitar on at least 2000 records that I'm aware of.
Please consider revisiting Stay by Jackson Browne. The song is "The Load-Out/Stay, one continuous song that is roughly 9 mins and 20 seconds. Luv your channel watch almost every day, keep up the great work guys!

The lead guitar on this song is done by Norman native( and Native American) Jesse Ed(win) Davis, also played lead guitar on Taj Mahal's Statesboro Blues and was the inspiration for Duane Allman's slide guitar

Damn, great interpretation, for all its uplifting beat and rhythm I can definitely see what the lyrics are talking about, "Doctor, my eyes...was I unwise, to keep them open for so long." Sometimes when you realize the complexities of world it makes you feel like you lose yourself and you don't know which way is up and which is down...and then the, "Is that the prize, for learning not to cry?" just the numbness of blocking the emotions out when the pain becomes too much...such a deep song yet such a poppy catchy beat...

Jackson surrounded himself with the best session musicians who were dying to play with him. All in LA.
"For a dancer", "Barricades of Heaven", "I'm Alive", "Sky Blue and Black",. I could go on and on when it comes to Jackson Browne. I saw him live around ten years ago. Just him, a piano, and several different guitars. He was wonderful!
Guess I put it here... For me Jackson Browne was one gifted musician / songwriter. That debut album of his and this song debuted at #80 and soared to #7 on the Billboard HOt 100 back in 1972.. Over the years he has gifted us with some very beautiful songs which I'm sure will endure for a very long time. That being said and to be honest I never heard a cover of this song, till last week And my goodness what a rendition to his song!. It is to say the least a very moving soulful performance by Alice Fredenham. Jackson when singing as you notice here very up and playful, her's so solemn, and endearing. I have heard her singing this song 3 times already and every time I tear up! I have listened to most all her songs now, starting with the performance on BGT in 2013 of "My Funny Valentine" that went viral, soared her singing style to the moon and back and received a standing ovation from both the audience and the 4 judges, which included Simon Colwell! Anyway, if you feel so incline, now that you done a reaction to Jackson singing Doctor My Eyes, consider doing a reaction to Alice's rendition. I think you may thoroughly enjoy the way she sings it. Its stunning!

Jackson Browne! GREAT CHOICE!! I love this song, it really captures feeling ALIVE, like it has this quality that captures the essences of life; check out Spirit in the Sky by Norman Greenbaum, has the same type of feel.

Sooo many GREAT songs, two others that are in my playlists that pop into my head are "The Deluge" and "For America".
I learned as a young teen how evil the world truly is. I quickly learned that tears solved nothing. Now in my 50's I sometimes wish I could just let the tears roll on out once in awhile. Also, learning what I learned has led to me being able to not feel sorry for myself and the disease that ever so slowly killing me. All of my nurses and doctors wonder how I always keep a smile on my face knowing my own immune system is stripping and killing my nervous system. Having seen just how awful life is and can be I am grateful that this disease is inexorably slow moving, though very painful from time-to-time.

Good reaction thanks! My girl loved this song in 1972, and because of that I learned to love it too. Jackson Brown is up there with the top singer song writers. Jackson Browne's Running On Empty album is one of my all time favorite album. You can listen to any song off it and not be disappointed! My favorite is Nothing But Time, which was recorded on their Silvereagle tour bus. In the middle of the song you can actually hear the bus changing gears in the background.

This is one of my all time favorite songs, pure poetry. You really need to react to "Stay" again, but this time with "The Load Out/Stay" it is so much better together.
If you liked "Stay" then you should give a listen to the whole song "The Load Out/Stay", because what you heard was just the tail end of the song. It's an incredible song heard all together.

This is the music of my youth! Love Jackson Browne! Great song, beautiful arrangement! This is a perfect example of what my guitar teacher tried to tell me about not needing to fill up every speck of space with notes. The space between the notes is just as important. Great guitar solo with terrific expression and emotion that mirrors the lyrics. You should really do the Load Out/Stay combo again because Stay by itself isn't the whole experience.
