No doubt that Merle Haggard had a classic country voice, perhaps the most classic in country music. Gravely, gritty, soulful, it bespoke the hard times of the Depression Era as experienced by so many millions, no matter what part of the nation you came from. He knew poverty, he knew hardship, he knew the honky tonks and the smokey bars. He spent his time in prison, came out and sang of the hard scrabble world he grew up in. It wasn't all so sad. You should check out the "Best of Merle Haggard." I think he will provide you with an astonishing insight into a world that you had no idea existed. He was NOT a saint, he was not most folks' idea of a hero, but he will light up a corner of understanding that I'd bet would shock, amaze and touch you. Check out some more of one of the classic singers of a day gone by. You'll be glad you did.

Merle was an inmate in San Quentin prison when Johnny Cash played there.
He eventually got out and became a country music legend. He was great at impressions too. There's a video of him doing impressions of artists like Johnny Cash and Buck Owens, and then they bring Johnny and Buck Owens out to sing with him while he's doing the impression. Lol
There's also a video of him doing an impression of Marty Robbins in front of Marty Robbins. It's great. Lol
Seeing Johnny Cash at San Quinton was the turning point for Merle. That’s when he decided to pursue music. I believe he later told that story at a concert that Cash attended. They became close, lifelong friends ❤

Merle Haggard wrote this song in the sixties. He was in prison back then and said this was a true story from his experience there. He was country music's all around best (singer, song writer, instrumentalist) ever. Miss ya man!!

Merle, speaks from experience as he was in prison, and this happened to a inmate as he was to meet his end, Merle Haggard, has lived more in his life then most of us ever will and has seen a lot. Merle, was a great entertainer and a great singer of a song and also a great writer, he will be missed in country music, this is what real country music sounds like these singer's of today needs this lesson!! "Mama Tried", "Hungry Eyes" and "Silver Wings" are three of his best. Merle wrote this after an experience he had while serving at San Quentin. RIP Merle.

@@dillonthompson5776 Sing me Back Home, was written after he witnessed the same thing while housed on death row. Hw was not there on a death sentence, he was just in solitary confinement, and death row was where the cells were located. He also talked with Caryl Chessman, the "Red Light Rapist."

I grew up on am country music,started my first band when I was 13 playing what is now classic country. 5 years later I was playing southern rock and touring festivals. By the time I was 20 I was touring with rock bands, opening for Uriah Heep, Def Leppard, Cheap trick, you get the picture. During that time I got married and walked away from playing as it did not afford the life as a husband and father that I envisioned. After all the kids were raised (6) I stepped back up to the mic and went back to my country roots.
One of the best voices in all of country music. Not bad for an ex-con.
The band Merle is playing with is Asleep at the Wheel, an excellent Western Swing band.
They are worthy in their own right.

Merles voice not what it used to be but his delivery, timing, emoting is still masterful. One of the best all time no dought.

About 2007 when I was a sophomore in Oklahoma, I had an English teacher named Mrs. Haggard. I coaxed my best friend into jokingly asking her if her dad's name was Merle.. She said no, but surprisingly her husband was related to him.
Merle's parents lived in Oklahoma, before moving to California due to the great depression and the Dust Bowl. Hence his song "Okie from Muskogee". "Okie" was a term they socially used to refer to Oklahoman's that moved to California during that time.
Merle wrote an interracial love song called “Irma Jackson” that his record label was worried would be a problem so they shelved it for years before finally releasing it. In some recordings Merle makes reference at the beginning to “not releasing it for one reason or another but now the time is right” but it was all the label. And the song is so good and sweet.
I'm from a little (tiny) town in northern California called Burnt Ranch. I was raised on Merle and Buck. Thank you Britt :)
While I grew up in the south, my family was never into country music (my mom loved the crooners) so I was never into it. But the man that would become my husband was a fan. While it was an adjustment, I can say I was always happy to hear Merle come on the radio. I encourage you to seek out performances from his younger years. He has a quality to his voice like no other.
I have two great story songs for you to try. George Jones, "He Stopped Loving Her Today". This was his trade mark song. Another is "The Little Girl", by George Michael Montgomery.

Merle is my absolute #1 favorite singer of all time. I didn't know what "Sing me back to life" was though haha
I read that this actually happened to Merle when he was in prison, and this was what he wrote based on his own experience.
This is based on his personal experience while a prisoner and death row convicts he knew (I think planned to escape with) if I remember correctly.

In the sixties we listened to the Animals, Frank Sinatra, Burl Ives, the Temptations, Dean Martin, the Rolling Stones and many others all in a row on the radio. We were nothing if not diverse.
Merle has passed away but his oldest son sounds very much like him and does some of his fathers songs.
Merle made a mistake on the lyrics of the first verse. The correct verse is" The warden led a prisoner down the hallway to his doom, I stood up to say goodbye like all the rest. I heard him ask the warden just before he reached my cell, could my guitar playing friend do my request". Merle was not the condemned man in the song but a friend of his being asked to play a last request for him. He wrote this song about an event like this that happened when he was an inmate at San Quentin.

I saw Haggard along with The Judds in 86. Hag had like a ten piece band with horns included. No smoke, no special lights…he just wakes in stage and sang the songs he had written. He wrote about his life and always told the truth. ❤️

Britt this is a true song Merle's best friend in prison escaped and killed a cop so they put him to death and Merle was supposed to go with him that night but didn't thank God so Merle wrote this song about him
