2 of my all time favorites singing there. George Jones and Merle Haggard are just so good. When Merle sang about prison he was speaking from authority.

Merle was in San Quentin when Cash performed there. He was paroled in 1960, and later pardoned by Ronald Reagan.
    He wrote this tune.

This is my Father's music and at the time, I really didn't care for country. But now that I'm older, I have a better appreciation of the great singers like Jones & Haggard. They did have great music back in the day.

These two are my all time favorites. Merle stood for the working man and George liked the skull protector hair and polyester suits. I got to see George and Merle in different venues back in the 90’s. Talk about a bucket list item.

5:48 Concerning George Jones' hair. About 12 years ago when I was 18, I was seeing a lovely little lady from Missouri. I'm from Oklahoma, and she would drive down and we would often sit at my local lake until the sun came up.
She told me that her mom worked for Walmart and that near where she lived, Walmart would put on these big festival concerts, and her mom helped run it. She said she actually got to be around George Jones backstage, and she didn't even know who he was. She said she thought it was just a random old grandpa.
My mind was blown not only did she get to be around him, but she didn't even know who he was. He was and is one of my top favorite artists, so I was envious too. Lol
One of the things she said she noticed about him was his hair. And she said it looked thin on top.. But he is/was old, so that's to be expected.

George Jones had a good show in the 90's called the George Jones Show, and he had Merle Haggard on it.
On the show he would have other country artists sitting and talking with him in a living room setting, and they would tell stories and sometimes sing. Then they would cut to a live performance with either George or the guests.
Full episodes are uploaded on TH-cam.

The judge sent Merle to the notorious San Quentin prison because he kept escaping jail when he would get caught doing petty crimes.
He and a friend broke into the back of a restaurant near to get money. They found the door was unlocked, and then inside discovered that there were workers and the restaurant was open and serving people. They got chased out and escaped in their car. Soon a cop pulled them over and Merle ran. He ran to a nearby train station to hop a train, but it was empty because it was Christmas. That's where he got caught.
The next day or so, while he was being processed in jail, he saw an opportunity to escape and literally walked out the front door. They caught him later, making his way to his brother's place.
He had escaped jail multiple times, so the judge decided to sentence him to the maximum security prison. He served a couple of years and got out early on good behavior.
Many years later, California Governor Ronald Reagan gave him a full pardon. Merle said that was the second most important day of his life. The first important day of his life being when his dad passed away when he was 8-9.
And yes, Merle did see Johnny perform while he was in prison. There's a video of Merle doing impressions of artists including Johnny Cash, and then those artists including Johnny Cash come out and sing with him.

"My favorite singer since Hank Williams Sr." - George Jones
George got to meet Hank Sr when he was 15. He told the story, and said he used to imitate Hank Sr's singing. When the woman walked him into the house and introduced him to Hank, she told Hank, "He sings just like you."
To which Hank Sr. told George, "I used to sing like Roy Acuff. But then I learned that they already had a Roy Acuff." (Acuff being another legend artist and country music promoter that came before Hank Sr)
So in a riddle kind of way, he was giving George advice and telling he should find his own sound instead of trying to imitate others. And I'm glad he did, because George was specially unique in his own way, much like Hank Sr was.

Merle got locked up for armed robbery, I believe. He got a pardon from then Governor Ronald Reagan, years later he preformed for President Reagan and thanked him. I heard he was born in a boxcar too, but I am not sure that is true. It could be, he was about my dad's age. People were moving around a lot in the 1930's so I can believe there were a few births, and conceptions, in boxcars. I wish we had stars like these two today. Merle and Ernest Tubb doing "Walking the Floor Over You" was a great performance too. Merle had a voice that blended well but was great on its own. Good reaction. Good luck on the 100k, maybe it will be a great Easter present for you?
