ToscanaMan uses a term: "moral dumbfounding," and they're right to use it. For y'all who don't know, the term was coined by the prominent psychologist Jonathan Haidt for that f'd up thing that people do where they have a moral/aesthetic stance on an issue or a thing BUT they know that there's no rational reason for them to continue to maintain that stance. They've been educated and know that there's no rational or provable reason for them to feel/believe the way they do but they continue to do so anyway. Considering (and this IS the rural South) about 40% of women do NOT know they can leave the tampon in and still take a leak??? Yeah, almost nobody gets a comprehensive education on even the basic 101-sh*t of human anatomy, let alone physiology. It's frankly pathetic. AND do NOT get me started on the mechanics of orgasm... ;o)
While I admire Georges courage to address tough issues, some of what he said is not technically correct. Still he made some good points. I just wish people would stop using abortion as a primary birth control method. There are easier ways to prevent having babies.
It's become my mission to inform that Carlin was a brilliant comedian! Try to watch every bit/performance he does! I grew up in the 70's and thx to my dad, I learned a lot from this
I’ve been watching George Carlin since I was a kid. I love how Carlin opens your eyes and makes you see the world for what it actually is and then you cannot unsee it in your daily lives.
While somewhat clever and poetic, a pretty flawed statement… The most obvious problem being: Who decides what right and wrong are? Unless there is empirical data on the subject or whatever, it’s somewhat subjective… And while religion is partly about doing what you are told, what they are usually saying to do is to follow their code of morality… Doing what is right, no matter what others might tell you to do… Of course, you may not agree with them as to what is right, but that doesn’t change their intent or mean either of you are right or wrong.
That quote does get attributed to Mencken, but I've looked it up just yesterday, there's zero evidence for him actually being the source... It's still a great quote, I'd just add a (possibly) to the reference 🙃
Quote is flawed, morality is not absolute. There is "doing what you think is right," "doing what you are told directly is right," and "doing what is generally accepted at this point in time as right by your peers and society at large." They all function on 3 different moral codes that may align to some degree but what is moral today may not have been moral a hundred or a thousand years ago and vice-versa. Morality is subjective and ultimately something we construct as part of our social world. It's also rather arbitrary. Some people see no problem with eating meat, others call it immoral. Some of us consider killing and murder of our fellow man to be immoral, others see it as perfectly acceptable or as just another part of living. Depending on the circumstances of your birth and education, your personal moral compass can swing wildly across a spectrum of matters. Religion is part of what can influence the accepted social and moral norms but it's not the only thing. Religion usually says killing is wrong but the state has no problem with teaching and letting members of its army and police force kill others. Morality is a really ambiguous thing. There are no absolutes, aside from entropy maybe.
Without a God, Morality is relative. Anyone can spin their own opinions on what's right and wrong. For Morality to be concrete there has to be an ultimate authority to enforce it
George always made me think from another angle….Loved him from my teenage years, on. I connected with him, as much of his way of thinking is mine as well.
Ya know what I'm disturbed about???? George saying a period is "fertilized eggs". 🤦♀️ 🤦♀️ 🤦♀️ For a brilliant man, he needs to read a biology book. Women DO NOT have fertilized eggs in her period! God! I can't believe no one has noticed this. One egg, sometimes two are released for fertilization. The uterus prepares for pregnancy. When the egg is not fertilized, the uterus cleans itself out, hence a period. There are no "fertilized" eggs being sloughed off during a period. If there are, that's called an early miscarriage. Geezus! George, you're too smart to say dumb shit like this. 😢
He was a comedy genius. He was unafraid to hold a mirror up to society to show us just how inane humanity can be. Sorrily miss the man. Watch all his stuff. Always educational and makes you think.
How cool that you're getting into and understanding George Carlin. I first discovered him in the early 70s and bought every album of his when they came out. He was a brilliant observational comedian, who pulled no punches on anyone, even himself. I saw him live about 1980 and my biggest memory is how much I hurt from laughing so hard for so long. Not only was he as politically and socially real as this video shows, his love of wordplay was always brilliant. Definitely, a comedian who makes you think while you laugh.
This routine is from the show "George Carlin Back In Town". The video you watched here came a bit in the middle He had made even more points before this part: Like the fact that the "Pro-Life" people were for saving the unborn, but against anything to take care of any babies once they were born (Against post-natal care, neo-natal care, food stamps, Section 8 housing, job placement programs, school funding, breakfast and/or lunch, etc...) "If you're pre-Born, you're fine ... if you're pre-School, you're F-ed". And more ...
It's a little like someone telling you you're not allowed to slit the throat of your 3-year-old child, but doing nothing to pay for upkeep, right? Now, I think the term "pro-life" is dishonest marketing. But I am anti-abortion. And I don't think I should have to pay for your child before telling you you can't kill him.
The Interesting thing is, if you listen to lefties today,...that is exactly the argument we use against " pro-lifers" Conservatives are not pro-life, they are simply anti-woman. As he said... Once the child is born they cannot be bothered.
George Carlin is a perfect example of comedians who rightly deserve their status. It takes intelligence to point out what's wrong in society while making us laugh. And it's probably a much better way to make people think than antagonizing them...
I'm really happy that you watched both parts, the abortion part and the sanctity of life part, A lot of people chop it up and don't watch all of it because it rounds out the whole argument and exposes the absurdity of it all.
I find as a Christian Transgender woman, that George Carlin is just as relevant as he has always been. He really makes a Lot of salient points that it may be a great idea for people that call themselves Christians to actually listen to. The way that the leaders in the Christian Church treat transgender people, even as Psychology says our experience is Valid,... is shameful. I struggled with my identity, and One day while in Prayer God just told me.." you are ok, I Love you, do what you need to be happy." Of course a Lot of Christians, and Trans people look at me with a side-eye. But I havee found a church that accepts me, and does not try to change me because someone thinks they understand what sex and gender are. Christians need to accept,.... sometimes our leaders get ahead of God on some issues. John 13:35. "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." Many have forgotten.
George Carlin was the Jon Stewart of his time. He spoke truth to power, questioned our preconceptions, and always brought the receipts. He used comedy as a weapon. He made people actually stop and think in a way the greatest professors can't. Because he was humble, funny, and charismatic.
Lol John Stewart isn't anything like George. Be careful with John Stewart just cause he says some shit you agree with doesn't mean he does. He did some flip flopping past couple of years and found a way to prey on people's emotions and rational thinking. More of a plant by the system to misinform and persuade the idiots. George was true and never flipped flop like John Stewart. That my opinion and observation for not on person on TV is truthful. Especially John Stewart.
It is a wonder why American's are not taught finance or sex education. It couldn't be to keep us poor and actively providing a cheap labor pool. That is just crazy.
I had one week of sex ed in 7th grade health, and it was all videos of close ups of various STD's. No discussion of abstinence, no discussion of birth control. No discussion of differences between men and women/etc. And my HS had finance rolled into home ec class, I know, i took home ec, which also included how to write a check properly.
You can't really blanket statement say 'Americans aren't this or that' depending on the state, everyone is, or some are, or a few are, or nobody is. It readout depends on the place and type of people around. Most Americans are taught sex ed these days. Maybe in the 80s no, but currently most are, and the further north you go the more that's true.
As a religious person yourself, I love that you are able to open up to different information or ideals and comment on them, its unfortunate that so many are not able to do that. Thank you for these reactions!
Girl YES! The education part about anatomy, my husband told me that until he met me, he had NO idea how periods and pads work. He didn't realize pads were for underwear, thought it like a bandaid we put on. Found out a couple of his male coworkers also thought the same until they ended up living with a woman. My jaw -hurt- from the way it dropped.

"You are all diseased" George Carlin; after hearing this album in 1999 or 2000 maybe, they become words to live by. I went on & listened to everything he'd released after that. I even saw him live in the mid 2000s. Carlin was one of the best. About a decade later or so, I heard Bill Hicks for the 1st time. Hicks died in the 90's, but he's like the natural evolution of Carlin. Hicks' comedy from the late 80s/early 90s is just brilliant -- he knew he was dying & it was like he knew he was only meant to be here to say what he did & then leave. His last few specials still resonate with today; they are well put together & complete... & Then cancer snatched the life out him; pancreatic cancer if I recall correctly...
I loved Bill's Kennedy routines, such as someone coming up to him and telling him "to stop going on about Kennedy," to which he replies "then stop going on about jesus, I mean if we're talking shelf-life here".

The best stand-up comedians make you think. George Carlin, Bill Burr, etc. We need them more than we know... because far too many people don't think or examine their beliefs and are led into doing absolutely insane things.
“How many people in the audience are getting a full education during this bit?” This applies to most of Georgie’s performances. It does my heart good to see young people watching him. Fun story: I actually tried to explain the whole “a fertilized egg isn’t a pregnancy yet,” to a hardcore abortionist who literally covered her ears and said, “Ew! I don’t want to know about all that!” But… but you were just arguing that women who get abortions should be in prison… but you admit yo not wanting to know how pregnancy works… That was a one time thing. Most of them just quote the “I knew you in the womb,” line from the Bible and just blink vacantly at anything else said.
Most fervent Godbotherers have to double declutch and drop a ratio to manage multiple syllables. The ratio of LGBTA in the general population? 20%. The population at Cambridge and Oxford Universities? 49%.. Godbotherers are literally trained *not* to think, its instilled in them, and then they're fed the most poisonous crap and they have no way of subjecting it to analysis or anything else. And I'm L, T & A, and this girl, if not for the fact that me giving her a hug right now would make her sick (red devil chemo, don't look it up), might have me reconsidering the A... Humanity at the moment makes me sad, something broke when Covid started, and I don't think it'll be fixed in the time I have left. This is not going to be a nice world to live in. I honestly don't think humanity has long left. Because things like cancers and fibro and other autoimmune are hitting harder and younger, and there aren't fixes. Everywhere the birthrates are plummeting and the genetic health is getting worse. The next decade scares me silly, if we even last that long...🥺
Carlin is my hero....I simply wouldn't be the human i am today without him. I think he's one of the most brilliant people who ever walked this earth and hands down the greatest comedian who will ever live. It brings me great joy to see others still listening to him and seeing his words echo through time beyond his death and it still as relevant as it ever was. When he passed away I cried as if my own father had died.
I've followed George Carlin for decades and watched every one of his stand-up performances. He's up there with Richard Pryor and Dick Gregory when it comes to the all-time great comedians. Every Millennial and Gen-Zer should be listening to this man.
The whole teaching the audience shtick that Carlin did, he got from Lenny Bruce. Lenny Bruce would basically go up there in the 50s and early 60s and said it was ok to be gay and that interracial marriage was ok, and then the police would arrest him for swearing, although that was an excuse to silence the content of his comedy. Carlin was also arrested at one of Bruce's shows, and many great comedians like Carlin, Pryor, and their contemporaries all list Lenny Bruce as an influence.
It's incredible how a man like George Carlin is so lasting. He was crass for his time and still is today, but he endures because what he said was always so true. Funny, but thought-provoking in a way no one else has ever been. His take on the capital-C Church is so true. There's a reason comedians have made priests the butt of their jokes for decades. George broke a lot of these subjects out of taboo and made hard topics funny and easier to talk about.
Believe it or not, this wasn't even the whole bit. The first part was a lot more political, and George really went in on Xtian conservatives. That being said, I'm loving your journey into comedy so far. I love your open-mindedness. You kind of remind me a lot of myself when the hamster wheel in my brain started turning when it comes to religion. Not to say you're on the same journey I was, but I can definitely say that life becomes a lot less complicated once the religion is no longer a part of it. 🙂
My Sex Ed in school was pretty encompassing and non-judgmental considering how conservative my state was. We had some kind of sex ed every year from sixth grade on up. One thing I look back on and I'm surprised about is how from middle school up to senior year, they always drilled home how in our state nobody and I mean nobody can tell the woman she cannot get an abortion. Thanks Nebraska ❤
This repression of basic critical thinking and practical life skills is a relatively recent development in many red states. It seems to be linked with the push for voter suppression and book banning...a very dangerous direction.
“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” - Mahatma Gandhi. It's a slightly apocryphal quote, but it sums up fairly nicely how I view things through my atheism. George very much lived by the Socratic idea that "the unexamined life is not worth living," and made comedy out of the results.
No man has ever been so brutally honest, truthful and was still able to make you laugh. Carlin was the king of truth and the king of comedy. We will miss him.

Carlin was a genius. i saw him live when i was 15 with my mother. 35 years ago and ill tell you, it was life altering. my mind opened and the world changed for me
My mom bought me all of his books after she saw me watching him. I kinda wanna rewrite one into sermons as a joke. "And lo he did scrapeth the lip crud from the corner of his mouth."
The man was a philosopher, he just delivered his thoughts in the forms of jokes. And this clip is from 20+ yrs ago, shows you how he KNEW things (and/or how little things change)

George: "Yes."

Especially in 'Murica. We don't need no education. Apparently.
Yeah, that...
That hit hard.

I honestly credit George Carlin with me becoming atheist in my teens. I'm not really atheist anymore but I'm still hyper-critical of religion
I'm so happy to see young people like yourself listening to George Carlin. The world needs more people like him.
"Morality is doing what is right, no matter what you are told. Religion is doing what you are told, no matter what is right."
H. L. Mencken
While somewhat clever and poetic, a pretty flawed statement… The most obvious problem being: Who decides what right and wrong are? Unless there is empirical data on the subject or whatever, it’s somewhat subjective…
And while religion is partly about doing what you are told, what they are usually saying to do is to follow their code of morality… Doing what is right, no matter what others might tell you to do… Of course, you may not agree with them as to what is right, but that doesn’t change their intent or mean either of you are right or wrong.
That quote does get attributed to Mencken, but I've looked it up just yesterday, there's zero evidence for him actually being the source...
It's still a great quote, I'd just add a (possibly) to the reference 🙃
Damn, that's a good line
Appreciate your open responses to ideas that are taught as blasphemy. Considering differing opinions make us more complete humans.

@Joe Smith thanks for the news flash. I had no idea. 🤪
The GOAT, he wasn't just the best comedian he achieved the most important thing, he made people think 🤔

His routine is from decades ago. Man told us what was wrong and made people laugh. Stay Blessed and have the day you have earned.
This routine is from the show "George Carlin Back In Town".
The video you watched here came a bit in the middle
He had made even more points before this part: Like the fact that the "Pro-Life" people were for saving the unborn, but against anything to take care of any babies once they were born (Against post-natal care, neo-natal care, food stamps, Section 8 housing, job placement programs, school funding, breakfast and/or lunch, etc...)
"If you're pre-Born, you're fine ... if you're pre-School, you're F-ed".
I own ALL of his stand up performances. I watch them every now and then.

George Carlin is a perfect example of comedians who rightly deserve their status. It takes intelligence to point out what's wrong in society while making us laugh. And it's probably a much better way to make people think than antagonizing them...
Carlin is sorely missed in these trying times... Man I wish we could all hear what he would think of 2023 so far.
I struggled with my identity, and One day while in Prayer God just told me.." you are ok, I Love you, do what you need to be happy."
Of course a Lot of Christians, and Trans people look at me with a side-eye.
Which is so fitting that he's one of Stewarts major inspirations.
What gets me is how many people on the right think George represents them, but he was very left
Stewart has now sold out, sadly.

It is a wonder why American's are not taught finance or sex education. It couldn't be to keep us poor and actively providing a cheap labor pool. That is just crazy.
Who would feed the war machine ?…not the rich man’s children…
that would be just WILD 👀😂
I had one week of sex ed in 7th grade health, and it was all videos of close ups of various STD's. No discussion of abstinence, no discussion of birth control. No discussion of differences between men and women/etc. And my HS had finance rolled into home ec class, I know, i took home ec, which also included how to write a check properly.
She didn't make it to the best line of this special. "REPUBLICANS WANT DEAD BABIES SO THEY CAN BECOME DEAD SOLDIERS."
I grew up Catholic and Protestant. I get where George is coming from. I love his wit. It comes off as more philosophical than comedic.

I've followed George Carlin for decades and watched every one of his stand-up performances. He's up there with Richard Pryor and Dick Gregory when it comes to the all-time great comedians. Every Millennial and Gen-Zer should be listening to this man.
I honestly learned a lot of biology and anatomy from George as a kid. Haha
You learned biology from an uneducated comedian, that is scary thought. The man is funny but he has no idea what he is talking about
Love him or hate him, no one can deny the genius of George Carlin!
People have to be willing to think long and hard... Very encouraging listening to your opened mind
