Walter Payton, the Chicago Bears' first-round choice and the fourth player selected in the 1975 National Football League Draft, developed into a superstar of unusual dimensions during his 13-season NFL tenure from 1975 to 1987, all of which he spent with the Chicago Bears.
The 5-10, 200-pound running back who rushed for 3,563 yards in four seasons at Jackson State went on to dominate the rushing section of the NFL record book during and long after his career ended.
The records he held at the time of his retirement included 16,726 total yards, 10 seasons with 1,000 or more yards rushing, 275 yards rushing in one game against Minnesota (1977), 77 games with more than 100 yards rushing, and 110 rushing touchdowns. Payton had 4,368 combined net attempts and accounted for 21,803 combined net yards. He also scored an impressive 750 points on 125 touchdowns.
Payton won the NFC rushing title five straight years from 1976 to 1980. He also led the NFC with 96 points in 1977 and won the NFL kickoff return championship in his rookie 1975 campaign. He was named both All-Pro and All-NFC seven times and played in nine Pro Bowl games. Payton was selected as the NFL's Most Valuable Player in 1977 and 1985, the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 1977 and 1985 and the NFC Most Valuable Player in 1977.
An amazing runner, Walter rushed for more than 1,000 yards 10 of his 13 seasons. His best season came in 1977, when he ran for 1,852 yards, third best in history at that time. Payton's 492 career pass receptions for 4,538 yards and 15 touchdowns contributed to his exceptional combined net yard totals.
Extremely durable, Payton missed one game in his rookie campaign and then played in 186 consecutive games.

Walter Payton really was the best. Lots of great running backs but Payton was the best. Not a Chicago fan but he's my favorite player by far and I've seen everyone the past 40 yrs. Just look at him run over player after player. Notice how he hit everyone before going out of bounds. He could run away from them too. And his teammates have repeatedly said he never weighed 200lbs. They couldn't believe his freakish strength in the weight room. His runs show it.

By no means am I a Bears fan but I was a fan of #34 "Sweetness!" This is the best set of highlights which define his greatness that I have ever watched. I found myself so engulfed in fact that I became misty-eyed and longing for a return of the NFL's greatest era. Players of that era played because they loved the game; I am sure they had decent contracts but not like today's players who don't truly love the game but love the fame and money! No other back compares, sorry Adrian Peterson but you are not "Sweetness!" This guy took a pounding but did not sit out games, he brought us highlights week after week! RIP Sweetness from a Raider fan!

RBs today run out of bounds and avoid contact. WP would seek out contact, hardly ever ran out of bounds to avoid a defender. In O vs D drills, Doug Plank said that getting stiff armed by WP was like getting punched, his hands were as tough as horse hooves. The guy would sprint uphill in gravel. Barry Sanders was an amazing (pure) runner, Emmitt Smith had great north/south running, and Eric Dickerson/Earl Campbell/Jim Brown had the power, but none were as complete a back as WP.

Sweetness -- one amazing man! Thanks for doing this video, it's like being able to watch Rembrandt paint a masterpiece. I always heard about those hillside sprint workouts, never saw the footage before -- wow! No wonder he had so much extra power and stability running on the field. Never saw so many broken tackles, people flying everywhere after getting that stiff-arm or whatever he chose to deal out. No stopping this guy. That little number just after 7:50, where he just out-accelerates a mystified tackle blew my mind, and later when he gets knocked out of bounds then just does a back-flip to get on his feet! Just two words for you: Walter Payton.

This is a great comment because it’s the polar opposite of how I️ see Barry Sanders when he ran, I️ feel like Barry would do anything and everything to not let a defender get a finger tip on him. I️ watch sanders run it and it looks like an 50yd run is broken down into 10yd increments of him trying to not be “it” in tag...

top notch sincing musical score to Payton's athleticism -- I have watched this numerous times and I will more -- GREAT JOB !!!! A lot of work went into this to make it right and that comes from love --- from one Bear fan to another ( how could you not know ? ) --- take a bow man --- I've been a Bear fan since 1965 and I have to believe that Mr. P would approve -- THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For me, the greatness of the guy lies in the fact that he never gave up. It's an aspect of character that I can apply to my own life. Walter Payton reminds me to do my best, get up, and do it again no matter what. All gratitude to WP fans everywhere for keeping the memory of this man alive.

Walter Payton could also block, catch, and throw, as well as any running back in the game. Members of his defense said they would hurry to get the ball back as quick as possible only because they wanted to watch Payton run.

Today, RB's share reps, run the ball 10 times a game, and typically tear a knee and have to have surgery in their career. It's amazing with his brutal running style how he lasted so long. I swear half of these highlights I'm expecting him to go down with a torn ACL. Teams need to study his workout routine and do it. He's top 2 RB in history (between him and Barry), and I'm a Cowboy fan. Emmitt 3rd :)

Great video thanks for putting it together and posting it. Walter Jerry Payton was THE GREATEST running back I have ever witnessed with my own eyes in my life time to play in the NFL. He was the reason I became a die hard Chicago Bears fan at the ripe old age of 8 years old. Show me one running back since him that would look to make contact with the defender instead of taking the easy way or running out of bounds to avoid a hit. R.I.P. Walter you are missed but you'll never be forgotten. "Never Die Easy" - Walter Payton

He had to practice against that 85' bears defense and I watched the 30 for 30 on the 85' Bears and one of the players said that he would carry there offense and would play his heart out there, also he would have been a way better running back stat wise if he had the offensive line that Emit Smith had that's why he had the stats he had and that shows you how good Walter Payton really was, that he can play without an offensive line and still have the stats he did what a in believable athlete may he R.I.P. Everyone will always remember you I will say right now I'm not a Bears fan I'm a giant and I love this man he's a true idle 👻

Water Payton : 195 pounds, 5 10in tall. he was a medium sized guy. he knows how to truck but he leads with his head. assumingly doesn't hurt him. Also knows how to throw a punch. Thus leading to his freakishly strong stiff arm💪. Those are some of his secretes

Humble, decent, God fearing man, and was the greatest football player ever. Payton ran behind a shit line for 85% of his career. He was the best. Crazy thing that he played all those years, strong, never hurt, retires and dies from a bizarre and unexpected illness. Class act.

Without question and unequivocally...and it doesn't matter how many yards any future running backs rush for... Mr. Payton was the greatest running back of all past and future time and there will never be another player that displayed the TOTAL and AWESOME greatness with such vigor and humility. Thank you for posting this. This is the best Payton highlight film I've ever seen. I am Chicago born and raised, so I forgive myself if I'm biased. But in my honest opinion, Walter Payton is the greatest athlete in history. His combination of speed, quickness, balance, versatility, intelligence, courage, willpower, leaping, throwing, catching, and kicking skills, and above all his pound-for-pound strength - again the whole combination - are unequaled. Watch this video and see why I say this.
