    Jim Brown was a superb craftsman whose primary job was to run with the football for the Cleveland Browns. For nine seasons, he did it better than any player before him. When he retired at the age of 30 at the peak of his career, he left behind a record book clogged with Jim Brown notations.
    Brown was more than just a one-of-a-kind running back. He caught passes, returned kickoffs, and even threw three touchdown passes. His 12,312 rushing yards and 15,459 combined net yards put him in a then-class by himself. Jim was a unanimous first-team All-NFL pick eight times, 1957 through 1961, 1963-1965. He played in nine Pro Bowls in nine years and was the game's outstanding back three times. He closed out his career with a three-touchdown outburst in the 1966 Pro Bowl.
    Brown was unanimously named the Rookie of the Year in 1957. He was recognized that season as the NFL's Most Valuable Player by many media organizations. In all, he earned league MVP honors four times (1957, 1958, 1963, and 1965). At Syracuse University, Brown was All-America in both football and lacrosse and a letterman in basketball. Jim selected football as his career sport, however, and thus became the Cleveland Browns' number 1 draft pick in 1957. Even though coach Paul Brown was traditionally reluctant to use rookies as regulars, Jim Brown was a regular and a star from day one.
    In the summer of 1966, Jim stunned the sports world with his announcement that he was retiring. Fans still ponder what heights he might have reached had he stayed on the firing line a few more seasons. As exceptional as Brown's statistics were, his durability may have been even more amazing. Despite a constant pounding from defenses always stacked against him personally, he never missed a game in nine years.

    The greatest American football player of all time. And he walks away from the game still in his prime. Unmatch in the annals of sports history. Became an actor, civil rights advocate, and businessman. Brown now in his 80's is still working with at-risk urban youths via his Amer-I-Can program. A true authentic legend.

      Athletes like Jim Brown, ( What few there were!!) are why there was complete segregation in the South. To prevent black men from making asses of white men on the Fields and on the Hardwood. How prejudiced was the era he dominated in? JIM BROWN WAS FIFTH IN THE HEISMAN TROPHY VOTING IN 1956. FIFTH!!!! Paul Hornung of Lily White Notre Dame won the so called Trophy. Quarterback of a 2-8 team with more interceptions than touchdowns. There aren't four better players than Jim Brown in the History of Football. Let alone for one season!!! IGNORANCE, RACISM AND STUPIDITY RULED THE DAY. Ironically, another Syracuse Running Back won the Heisman five seasons later. The Fabulous Ernie Davis. Perhaps the only Running Back of all time to rate comparison with Brown. The Cleveland legend himself said that watching Davis was "Like Looking in a Mirror." Brown was more than a Superstar. He was a Black Superstar making fools of white stars. JUST LOOK AT THIS FOOTAGE. WHAT SAND BOX WAS HE BULLYING THESE LITTLE CHILDREN IN?!! Did it appear for one moment in this video that Jim Brown was actually playing against grown men? When God handed out Athletic Ability, the next Ten Million men in line must have went out for a Burger and Fries!! Size, Speed, Balance and Strength. With more competitive fire than Two Rams butting heads. Were I to choose the three greatest players of all time it would be Jerry Rice, Lawrence Taylor and Jim Brown. With Brown miles ahead as the number one Running Back. Not Number Five, like that Moron's List from long ago.

    this is a great jim brown highlight reel. i grew up watching him and rooting for the browns (but i also liked gale sayers).
    one thing i noticed from this reel is how careless brown was in holding the ball, and how little effort was made by defenders to try to strip the ball.
    no matter. he's still the GOAT in my view.
    this reel is great, and the many comments are great too.

    Grew up in Ohio watching Jimmy Brown every Sunday and feel privileged to have witnessed the greatest football player in the history of the game. Someone else mentioned the lack of showboating when he scored a touchdown. He was asked about that later in life after all the 'Dig Me' celebrations started and he simply said; "Act like you've been there before". He was there 126 times in 9 years; several of those years when they only played a 12 game season.

    I enjoyed watching Jim Brown whenever Syracuse played on television and later on when he played with the Cleveland Browns. I am 78 years old and was born in Chicago. I have had the opportunity to watch all of the great football players and he is by far the GOAT. I heard he was great at playing Lacrosse too. 😆 I loved how he would pretend to be hurt whenever they tackled him because he would get up so slow and go to the huddle. Then on the next play, the QB would give Jim the ball and he would do his thing. I feel fortunate because in my lifetime I got the chance to see the greats in all of the different sports but no athlete dominated their sport like the great Jim Brown. He will always be my favorite football player. He was a hero on the field and off the field. RESPECT, RESPECT, RESPECT!

      Milton Martin my father played for the Packers for 14 yrs from 1956 thru 1968. He saw three great runners -Jim Taylor Gales Sayers and Jim Brown. I asked him many times who was the best. He said Jim Taylor was the meanest and toughest guy. He said Gayle was from another world. He said Jim Brown looked like an average guy until you realized he was making 5 or more yards every play. He said he was too big and looked like a power back until he suddenly made a crazy move and he was 50 yards down field. He said It looked like he was pacing himself until that perfect moment when he caught you resting. Many years later we got to know Jim. My dad was almost 80 and just feeling the misery of Parkinson’s. I drove up to Canton and met my dad at the annual Hall of Fame weekend. I came down to dinner and there was dad and Jim sitting together at a Dinner. Somewhere along the line they had talked and became friends. Until my dads death they would see each other at events and it always made me sad. Jim told me that my dad was the greatest player and person he ever met. My dad was a Texas boy who didn’t see race. Jim considered him an equal. The last time we were together I told Jim how much it meant to my dad that they were friends. Jim said it has been my honor. My dad passed this year and I will see them one more time this year at the Super Bowl on the all time team.

      @@texasjr1804 my condolences for the lost of your father. I really enjoyed the story you told. You never mentioned your father's name. I am sure I saw him play because I use to watch those three teams, with those three players, play. All three of them were great running backs, but like I said before, Jim Brown was my favorite. He was both faster & bigger than Payton and E. Smith. He never missed a game during his 9 seasons in which his team (Browns) always finished above .500 (with 4 different QBs). He played in 3 NFL title games and a conf play-off when the only way a team could make the postseason was by winning their conf title (no wild card teams). He led the NFL the most times in: yds rushing (8), yds from scrimmage (6) & all-purpose yds (5). He caught the most career TDP (20) of any back who led the NFL in rushing twice. He threw 3 career TDP with no interceptions. He is the only player to average at least ONE TD per SCHEDULED CAREER game. No other player even averaged 1 TD per career games played. He is the only back to have career rush averages of both at least 100 Y/G & 5 Y/A. Again those numbers are per SCHEDULED game. Of course, what I'm describing is the greatest player in pro football history. He was not only that but also the greatest athlete in American history. He is a member of 3 halls of fame (pro&college fb/ college lax). He was a nationally ranked decathlon athlete in "high school". He was the 2nd leading scorer on the Syracuse basketball team as a Jr (gave up bskbl for fb). He was the PK at Syracuse & scored a then record 43 pts in one game & scored 20 of his team's 27 in the 1957 Cotton Bowl. AND he was a 2-time NFL players golf champion. This little known achievement alone puts him a notch above any of the other candidates for GOAT athlete because none of them played what might be the most challenging of all games that well. How do in know that? He had to beat John Brodie who was good enough to play on both the regular and SR PGA Tour. BTW, I saw him play at least 60 games live and the thing that stands out in my memory is how stunningly so many of his great plays just happened with no warning as they were unfolding. He simply made so many great plays (17 career 50+yd TDs) out of nowhere.

    I was born in the 40"s and was a giants fan as a kid. Jim Brown was the greatest back of all time. My father would start warming me and my brothers a week before the Browns would play the Giants. He would say Sam Huff is going to try to stop Jim Brown. I hope he can do it.

    • @TheTweeter53
      @TheTweeter53 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      johndnorth I only have 1 criticism of Brown: He retired too soon. Just because he and Art Modell were both stubborn and unyielding. He should have played 3 or 4 more years into the Bill Nelsen era. To retire at age 30 is just too young. I know he wanted to make love to the beautiful women on camera. But still, come on. He still had a few good years left in him. Would have loved to see Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly in the same backfield. Probably Browns would have made at least 1 Super Bowl appearance if Brown hadn't quit so darn soon.

    Jim Brown is my all time favorite player, specifically because, his style of play was to be fearless amongst defenders and to fake to throw them off balance and then knock them down rather than always try to avoid them. This is a strategy of running that few players can succeed with.

    The thing about Brown is that he had both incredible power and excellent long speed. Unless you had an angle on him in the open field, he was tough to catch from behind. Plus, he was a good pass catcher and he even threw a TD to Gary Collins in this film. IMO, the best RB ever.

    That pass, from Frank Ryan at about 1:20 is a great example of how Brown made his quarterbacks look good. He never really had a stud at QB. It was Milt Plum, or Jim Ninowski, or finally Frank Ryan, but they could always dump it off to him in the flat and he was liable to take it 80 yards. There was no defensive halfback (they had no safeties or CB's in the 50's and early 60's) that could handle him. And he could outrun the bastards. What a combination of speed and power (and pure meanness). Only two I've seen to compare in the last 50 years are Bo and Earl, but neither of them had the durability to last. Brown is the GOAT. Period.

    I'm old enough to remember seeing all of JB games. Your highlights are great but you could have combined them into a single game to realize how good he was. He was given the ball play after play and each play was a Sunday highlight. Players were dirty then and anything goes facemasks no problem, hits out of bounds no problems, biting no problem, punches no problem there weren't flags thrown. Brown was so good someone should make a clip on how many guys he took out of a game. Later runners were one dimensional and lost yards to get a big run gain. Every play he went forward for yards even when 11 guys were holding on to him he could push them towards the goal line. Today's players are bigger and faster if he trained today he would also be bigger and faster. A person has to be old enough to compare all the running backs. He was the only one to have all the attributes. No one compares.

    3 numbers that tell you all you need to know about Jim Brown:
    1. 104.3 yds per game for his career best in history
    2. 5.2 yds/carry that's a 1st down every 2 times he carried the ball-for his career best in history.
    3. And 0(zero)-number of games he missed while being the most marked man in NFL history. Took more cheap shots in piles and after the whistle than any back.
    He NEVER ran out of bounds-wanted to punish the man hitting him instead of giving him the edge by going out of bounds.
    Brown wore no hip pads or thigh pads-too restrictive and didn't need the protection.
    If you still have any doubts as to who was the best, read/listen to what his fellow players said about him-the men that play the game know the truth

    It's been a very long time since the browns have had any high caliber offensive player on their team. Given the current state of the team no high caliber player would go to a franchise whose team as a whole is an embarrassment and a joke.

    Wow, look at the reverence the Dallas Cowboys showed him on the sideline (4:10), after being roughed up out of bounds a bit. They knew that making him angry wouldn't increase their chances on slowing him down, and as a result, possibly winning the game, he was a beast before the term was ever coined...

      That scene is interesting. It's like they had a complete reverence for him. They knew what he of all players had to deal with. He was simply the best. So, so special.

    The very first player who completely dominated. There may have ben a few others, but nothing like Brown. Performances like Gale Sayers, Alan Page, OJ. Simposon in 1973 and Dan Marino in 1984, stand out.The difference is, Brown did it for the duration of his career, not so the others.Led the league in rushing 8 out of his 9 years, missed 1000 yards his rookie season I think by just a few yards, AND...over a 5 yards per carry average.
    It's difficult to compare cross generation athletes. Could Brown play today, ofcourse he could. Given the nature of the competiton, he would not have been as effective. But cross generational athletes are comepared by how they fared against the competition of their era. Here, he looks no different than the Bo Jackson run again the Seahawks, except faster 1:19

      If I die Tonight He would not have been able to run over,around and away from todays players. Today, everyones's fast and just as big/ bigger. The linemen and LB's he ran over back then, would not happen today.
      Again, it's just unfair to compare yesterdays athletes with today's, but Brown was so ahead of his time. No doubt he would have been able to play.

    • @Ravens-Nation-34
      @Ravens-Nation-34 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      6400az With today's horrible tackling,horrible coaching, horrible fundamentals, Jim Brown would destroy today's teams. The only thing that he would have a problem with is that he would be slower in terms of speed, other than that, he would still be the same.

    • @6400az
      @6400az 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I die Tonight That may be and advantage for Brown as would be the skin tight jerseys ( part of the reason tackling is difficult today ).
      Keep in mind he'd be the same, but the competition would be 50 years ahead of him. He COULD play, but he would not dominate as in his era. The long , winding , back and forth runs would not be happening.

      +Jeffrey T. Steptoe so youre saying the players today are worse then they were back then? Yea ok buddy
      the players today are bigger stronger and MUCH MUCH faster. he might still be a pro bowl caliber rb today, maybe even one of the elites, but you will not see the 104 yards per game you saw back in the 60s let alone quadrupling that number.
      i honestly believe barry sanders is the greatest rb of all time and jerry rice is the greatest football player of all time

    • @melhall17
      @melhall17 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Joe Deli the players today cant tackle worth a damn. they just try to blow up the ball carrier. Jim Brown greatest attribute was his incredible balance. Yes Jim Brown would run todays players over just like he did back in the day. Also he would have access todays , nutrition and training. In todays Brown would be a monster

    • @joedeli8254
      @joedeli8254 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +melhall17 you think players can't tackle because of the constant highlights you see on TH-cam and espn. there isn't a second of the games that you can't see today. that wasn't the case back in the day. so, no, you're wrong, today's tackling is better than in the 60s. just go watch the Jim brown highlights. some of those attempts are laughable.
      just rewatch the game last night. that strip from chancellor isn't by accident. he meant to do that. they are doing a hell of a lot more than just trying to take that ball carrier down. watch gale sayers run the ball. that shit would not fly today.
      and the nutrition today? really the only advancement we have is in injury recovery. a torn acl only a couple years ago meant retirement. not today. but they would not be any faster today. speed isn't something that you increase or are taught. you are either fast or youre not
      and the op said he would have greater numbers today (by a wide margin so ill just assume thats sarcasm) If you honestly think that Jim Brown would actually put up BETTER numbers today youre delusional and its not even worth arguing with you

    • @melhall17

Two honorable mentions #66 a pretty fair blocker and jim Kelly who pushed him and may have had some prettier runs but JB was Gods gift to pro football. Paul Robeson is about the only other athlete to transcend his sport and other fields and may have been JB s role model.

    The Greastest Running Back I have ever Witnessed ! First time I saw Jim Brown I was 10 yrs old ! What impressed me was when I watched him carry 4 tacklers into the end zone ! He had deceptive speed and RAW Power ! He never avoided tacklers , he Ran through them ! Who knows what Yardage he could have wound up with if he was on a Better Team ! Football was a Sport back then !not a Political Agenda ! I don’t watch Today’s Football because politics took over the Sport ! Their Politics is Disrespecting the Flag ! And worshipping Criminals and FAKE Communist Organization BLM ! Who have Proved their Hypocracy over and Over ! NFL is Dead !

      The Browns of the 50's and early 60's were a great team. It was typically them and the NY Giants in the Eastern Conference battling for the Conference in those days. They were always a contender and sometimes the champs. Prior to Brown, when Otto Graham was the QB, they were in 10 consecutive championship games and won 7 of them. What other NFL team can make that claim?

    • @buckfan1969
      @buckfan1969 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you could say is what would have happened if they'd had a better QB. During his time with the Browns the QB's were, in order, Milt Plum, Jim Ninowski, and then Frank Ryan. All journeymen. Because of that, the defense always keyed on Brown. If they'd had a Johnny Unitas they couldn't have zeroed in on Brown. And I'll always wonder what would have happened if Ernie Davis had been able to play for the Browns instead of dying of leukemia before he ever took a snap. Davis broke all Brown's records a Syracuse and was the Heisman winner in 1961, I believe.

      Their defenses slipped after Paul Brown left, too. Despite the shutout of the Colts in the championship game, the '64 Browns were the only NFL champion to finish last in defense (yards allowed).
