Man this series is fun as hell (despite some overly edgy writing) - we also wouldn't have the look of the MCU without The Ultimates

It laid the proper foundation for the MCU to exist within the current era. The way they redefined all their star characters for the 21 century pretty much became the status quo for most renditions of the characters I grew up with. I remember only knowing of Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men, the shock I had when I learned the 1610 wasn't the main canon shook me
@GreenGoblet is there any decent literary merit/writing in this series? Just wondering, I hear alot of back and forth about it. What makes it so fun?
I'm a real sucker for the Ultimate universe through it's high-highs and abysmal-lows. Can't wait to pick this one up tomorrow.
@jearl75290 Wasnt Mark Millar’s Ultimates considered one of the highs of the ultimate universe? (Even if it wasnt as high as Bendis’s Ultimate Spider-Man??)
While I may not like the Ultimate Universe, Ultimates 2 will always have a special place for me because it was the first trade paperback I ever got, my dad got me The Ultimates 2 Vol. 2: Grand Theft America as a gift for my 7th birthday. Now whether or not a 7-year-old should've been reading that book is a whole different story lol.
I'm sounding like a broken record but I'm SO glad I came back when I did. This, the Waid Flash, Wolverine 2 and 3, etc, loving it!! Really looking forward to the Invaders also!!

If I had a choice I’d prefer the earlier printing, for the supplementary material and to be honest I like the deeper colours better. So many omnis the past couple months! I wonder which ones will suffer sales-wise ‘cos I know I can’t afford ‘em all! Thanks Omar!
Just wait until December and January! There's something like 14 or more omnis slated for January, granted they don't get pushed back... I kind of hope they do, I know my wallet does.

The first omnibus I bought, back in 2008ish. Didn't know what they were and changed my life (for the better?)
I was a bit disappointed first, because i misunderstood the title and thought it was a vol 2.
I already have one copy of this. But it's good to see that it is on a third printing. Gives me hope for a second volume soon.
Thanks for pointing out the annual is not in the OHC. Now i need to get the omni and sell the OHC
Is there a reading order for the ultimate universe? I'm very much interested in the ultimate universe. Just picked up ultimate Spider-Man and ultimate X-men and now this as well.

I was not going to grab this until I read miles ultimate Spider-Man and was curious about the rest of the ultimate universe so I think imma check this one out
I only read DC comics as a kid. But the first marvel comic I read was ultimates issues one and I was hooked. Even though I don't know what the character were in some case.. but it got me to read marvel. I love the frist few volume of ultimate Spider-Man X-Men and ff great stuff
I remember reading this as a teenager (where has all the time gone!!) and having my mind blown by how edgy and dark it was. Pretty sure if I picked this up now, I wouldn't be quite so fond of the stories. Some things are better left in the past to preserve our memories of them.
The transformers license is returning to marvel next year. Any chance we could see those original comics reprinted

I still have my oversized hardcovers of these. That's a big error from Marvel missing the creators commentary out from the reprint and a strange decision given the lower page count.

Omar, I love that “It wasn’t an Avengers the Crossing!” Side question: what brand are your book shelves because I need to buy new ones because mine are sagging in the middle with the weight of omnibuses?
The ones in the back are Kallax from Ikea.
This is my second favourite book after Miracleman I'll be keeping my 2 OHC's as they have the commentary that's missing, I wish they had included Annual number 2 , I know it's not by Millar, but just to be complete. I have a 14ft long version of that huge splash page, printed on cloth so it won't crease. I've got the entire UU in various formats so I'm glad they are gradually replacing most of it with Omni's, I wish they hadn't messed it up.
I ended up recently trying to get all the ultimate comics, I think that's going to be one of the few I skip since it isn't worth finding what other edition it's collected in
@@Humanbean1100 The Ultimates 2 Annual? it's in 'Ultimate Annuals volume 2' TPB there are a few copies on ebay dirt cheap
Do both OHCs have the commentary or is it only in the Ultimates 2 one?

@@beastlaz im saying i dont want to get an entire volume of something for one annual. i think its in one of the annual collections but this would still be the only one that isn't/wont be collected in a large volume in the future (if they do all of the spiderman xmen and eventually fantastic four cmon)

Eh, the differences in the new printing don't bother me. I got the gorgeous DM cover with all the Ultimate Universe heroes from IST, and I'm so excited!!
Another great review as always. I plan on keeping my 2 OHCs but this is great for those that missed out. Only thing i would slightly disagree with is recommendation to MCU movie fans as while there are nice visuals that look the same, many of the Ultimates are a bit unlikable compared to MCU or 616 for that matter. Would be a bit of shock for fans or Cap, IM, Hank Pym, and umm Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver if you know what i mean.
But dude you gotta stop flexing your shelf in the back full of Omnis that won't be coming out for months (that we can't get yet) but sitting pretty in front of you! :D

I’m really excited to get a copy of this, I’m aiming to get the direct market cover because that crossover cover is dope. I’m also holding out hope to see Ultimatum collected in omnibus format 😅 I did enjoy that but I can also see why people didn’t.
I did really like the art in Ultimatum and Ultimates 3.
I honestly don't mind ultimatum, I can understand why someone wouldn't, but the whole point of ultimatum was to wipe the slate of the current characters. And it definitely achieved that lol
The Ultimate Universe had a fantastic start. Started to lose its way with Ultimatum. Came back with Death of Spider-man. Then died a slow death outside of Miles Morales which for me died shortly after Secret Wars By Hickman.

Does Spider-Man actually appear in this omni? He's shown on one of the covers and Omar mentions his battle with the Hulk, apparently in a team-up issue, but I don't recall...
There is a big team up with the Ultimate universe as a whole.

There is an ultimate avengers, ultimates 3 and Ultimates by Hickman and Ewing. Only ultimate avengers has an omnibus.

@@space.pirate481 I enjoyed the story and the artwork. There are 2 omnis I believe for the Ultimates and it looks like the "Complete Collection" TPB only has enough contents for one Omni. I'll have to give it a look

@Seasonal-Shadow_4674 I'd say so. Very different to the mainline Avengers stories and you can clearly see the MCU was inspired by this version of the Avengers

So Marvel is charging the same price for a new printing of the Ultimates with less pages and poor quality colors? For the same price the old printing is looking better to me. As it is in other of their books I'm not l liking their super see through pages, and those awful spines, with the tiny font. It seems like they're trying to cut cost, and we're getting the bad end of the stick. Overall nice review Omar.👍
Anyone else going against Omar on the coloring? I prefer the older edition being darker myself...
It looks muddled, but I'm okay with my second printing.
@@trishb.6398 Some of it may be muddled, but the coloring of the original edition is also faithful to how the original issues actually looked. A real shame they couldn’t find a better balance for the new edition if only for maintaining deeper blacks in one pages like the mountain climbing scene.
I agree with you the earlier printing looks better than the bright colors of the new print. Maybe it looks different in person.

I absolutely love these comics, but infortunately I agree some "edgy" parts are cringe and I have actually held back from recommending this book to some friends only because of the letter A reference.

Great overview. But this, like Ultimate X-men look so much of their time, and just not as interesting as I remember.
