Taryl, my 91 Harley Sporty 1200 would not do over 85, as I went over the Bay-Side Br. in Clearwater,FL. I went back home and cleaned the air cleaner out with a medium stiff brush
and kero, blew it out really good and went out to that br. and got'er up to 110mph, the cop
was pretty good about the fact I was doing good maint. and told me to keep'er inside the
limit. So I know how much better an engine can run when properly kept up.
Don’t let the armchair master mechanics get to you Taryl, I know you don’t:) Too many wannabe mechanics on TH-cam leaving comments but aren’t smart enough to make a video to show us all how to really do it. You rock Taryl! Thanks for sharing.
Briggs has made some great motors I used a 5hp briggs to mow a 1/2 acre lot of grass and weeds for years no problems just maintenance i love them

Some people including myself prefer Briggs to Honda for servicing and parts interchange. Another theory is that there was an important bolt twisted off in that Honda that you couldn't get out for love nor money, or the gas tank was shot.
If you watch at the end there is a second unit in the background, likely also getting a Repower. The owner probably wants to try something new if he’s not happy with the Honda
The modern Briggs Vanguard is a solid engine. It looks like the previous motor had lots of corrosion. Fertilizer is tough on anything metal.

Makes me remember an old, Oldsmobile commercial. This isn't your father's Vanguard, the ones that had steel timing gears and a cast iron liner.
Great video Taryl, I have never seen or even heard of a self propelled ride on fertilizer spreader so it was cool to see! A spreader like that must be for commercial landscapers.
I'm a new subscriber and was wondering if this guy is for real, or is his appearance and mannerisms all a skit, I don't want to seem rude, he is very knowledgable and entertaining to watch. Keep it up either way, having fun is the best way to get through the day!
It’s a skit, I don’t have any reason to watch someone do a Motor I mean Engine swap on a Fertilizer / spreader but I watch for Taryl for the skits and plus my girlfriend says he is a dream boat 😍
Seems the 160-190 Honda motors work awesome on all things except compactors and power spreaders.
Just a tip !! When drilling metal slower speeds are better less heat will make drill bits last a lot longer even with pilot Holes. GOOD VIDEOS

I see the spreader plate was missing and the motor shield was gone , I used one of those a mounted a metal box where the fert box was and use it at swap meets . Those wet clutches are nice , they sell around here for 150 to 200 used but the bad thing is it’s 7/8” input shaft , not many engines have that . Nice job there dude !

I laughed as little harder than I supposed to when Jesse throws his lemon water on the ground after seeing the new vanguard engine lol!
I love vanguard engines, but im iffy on their new ones since most new briggs are essentially copies from the original design from honda and other counterparts such as predators and lifans. The troybilt xp generator I have has a briggs 420cc engine, identical to the predator 420cc engine.
If it lasts though, then there's my dinner on that. Good video as usual taryll.

@@johncasor9698 Business owners aren't necessarily mechanics. Some may not maintain their equipment regularly. In this high-hours case, adjusting the valve lash and replacing the air filter will likely make a significant difference.

Enjoyed the video Taryl. What do you think about spraying down that throttle assembly down with a generous application of fluid film to fight corrosion,or if you don't have it, how about your gel-lube,that's good stuff too,I like it.
Air compressor might have an issue, it cycled pretty quickly after little use of the cutter. Love those GX200 motors.

Today I watched a free video on the internetwork of computers.
A man was showing how he replaces a motor on an enginized lawn maintenance vehicle.
It was fun to watch because he is funny and shows how to repair lawn maintenance equipment.
He is a professional mechanic that earns a living for himself and his family by repairing lawn equipment.
It is nice that he shares his whole lot of years and years and years of knowledge and experience for free.
I am not A professional mechanic but I have some wrenches in my garage I got for my birthday.
So I criticized him in the comments part of the video.

Should be wearing them even if no fertilizer. He seems to think fertilizer is toxic, but gas and oil won't give you deadly leukemia.
Have you ever thought about spraying the gas tank with undercoating to keep it from rusting. It stops most of the salt from getting to the under carriage of vehicles. Just a thought.

You’re one of the few who realized this and also is why the guy said it’s hard to start in the cold 💯👍. In the background there is another unit I assume also getting a motor I mean Engine swap
I worked for a cenex harvest States spreading fertilizer and fertilizer attracts moisture and we used a pressure washer to wash equipment all the time air don't do shit! The problem is people don't wash fertilizer off of equipment often enough. Old Briggs good new Briggs junk. Anti-seize is the best thing you can use to prevent corrosion in fertilizer applications. I worked on everything that come in contact with fertilizer our equipment got washed down every week before the weekend so it had time to dry off.
I like the old vanguard colors. Good engines though!
Suggestion...Use dry lube (like mountain bike chain lube) on linkage and coat the gas tank with rubberized undercoating spray.
@ the 33:16 mark, Taryl's hand looks like a werewolf's hand. Has he given something away here?
They should be washed weekly, that's how we do it at our fertilizing business. They're used all day 5-6 days a week. Majority of everything on these is stainless so it doesn't rust for the most part. But letting too much fert stay on for too long will cause issues.

Nitrogen fertilizer is VERY corrosive to most metals, even Copper and Brass. Every winter we shut the branch down for two weeks, so that we could repair all the damage to all the big trucks and power equipment that the Nitrogen destroyed.
I was a Service Manager for Americas biggest lawn care company for 5 years. We went through equipment faster than I do a six pack of Diet A&W Rootbeer

I wash the fertilizer off. Blowing it off leaves some on the metal, no matter how much blowing. After hauling fertilizer, wash the equipment then neutralize the acidic fertilizer with a baking soda solution. Mix a box in a garden sprayer and neutralize away.

Just looked up that engine and it looks very impressive. Briggs is really trying to take over the commercial game from Honda with this new engine. Time will tell. Cut-a-ways are available online.
If Briggs builds them here in the USA and builds them right I hope they are successful. If they’re going to build them in another country I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy one over a Honda or Yamaha.
Hi, 4 years in the future update: Briggs still sucks, and Honda is still top of the heap. During the pandemic the big mower companies started slapping trash Briggs engines when Kawasaki couldn't supply. Wouldn't touch one of the Briggs set ups with a ten foot pole.

A snorkel from the engine up to the handle area would be ideal to help stay away from dirt and dust issues .
