    As I finished planting all the plants I'd ordered in this year, and the things I'd started from seed & cuttings, I looked around and thought, "I don't think I'll need to buy any plants for a year or two, by the time these things grow to maturity I'm out of room". Now I'm thinking I need to find a place to squeeze in a lilac bush. I'd look for a bigger property, but at my age I don't have it in me to replant all this stuff again somewhere else.

    So true on what may work for one may not for another. My one son had kidney failure since 2018. He was in and out of the hospital so much. He finally figured out some of the reasons of his problem was they were treating him like all the other patients with kidney failure - giving him meds, which one was causing his blood pressure to go so high. He learned to argue with doctors and nurses about it because he was listening to his body. After refusing that certain med and getting the doctors to listen to him, his last year before he had a kidney transplant (this year), he was not in the hospital at all. Yes, he went through dialysis 3 times a week for 5 years and came close to dying. He was misdiagnosed from the start and treated for a year before both his kidneys nearly failed. He had 3 leaking arteries, and it took them over a year to realize that and treat it.
    One wonders why I have a hard time in trusting the medical field.

      @RainCountryHomestead Yes, it is. My dad used to say God gave us what we need - it is just knowing what to use, how to use, etc. My dad went through a lot when he started looking into herbs, etc. Because of him, I want to learn more of herbs, etc. I wish I knew what I did today years ago. Nowadays, it helps having so much more information out there. I am in my 60s now but am foraging and growing herbs along with some berries and vegetables.
      I have 4 kids, which they are all on some type of medication. I do not take anything. Funny the other day, my one son and I were talking about grounding. He has been doing lots of research since everything he has been through.

    My mother's lilacs are not in the best shape and I trimmed them back quite a bit last year to try and nurse them back to health, so they only had two or three blossoms. I really think that they are pretty much at the end of their lives. The one was my grandmother's that my mother transplanted from the old homeplace. I've tried to root cuttings with no success. If anyone has some surefire tips for propagating lilacs I would love to hear them.

    • @gidget8717
      @gidget8717 ปีที่แล้ว

      How are you rooting the cuttings? Have you rooting it in plain water? To root in water you need to trim back a soft growing tip, cut the branch back to just before you see harder "bark", at the bottom of a node. Trim off most of the leaves leaving only a few at the top and put in a glass/jar of water. I usually set the jar where its will get morning light. Change the jar & water every week. As long as the leaves stay green and fresh looking it will make roots. Some plants it takes a couple of months and some plants only a couple of weeks. As long as the leaves don't wilt keep changing the container & water. Make a whole jar full of cuttings to improve your chances.

    Organic Gardening is another blanket key praise that one must be careful with.
    Let's take animal manure as an example.
    If the animals were fed food that is contaminated with an herbicide that does not break down during the natural composing process, you will contaminate and may end up killing your garden area.
    In addition, it takes a year before animal manure breaks down sufficiently to start feeding the plants. So if you are dealing with soil that is lacking in anything and needs amending to build up, you will need to use synthetic fertilizer in conjunction with the organic gardening processes for a couple years to build that soil up so that it can produce as much yield as possible and you will have to amend the soil with the animal manure on a yearly basis to keep the soil fertile.
    Most people don't want to put that kind of time and energy and effort into growing food or anything else in a garden.
    As for me, I live in an apartment so I either have to do container gardening or hydroponics gardening in order to benefit from fresh veggies.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never used synthetic fertilizers and have built my soil up mostly using natural sources we can get for free. Mostly now it comes from grass clippings that are never sprayed, mostly those from our other property, chicken manure from our own chickens that only eat organically. We did use free horse manure for a few years until it was no longer available to us but many of the plants I grow also make good fertilizer like the comfrey and the nettle.

    • @scotttovey
      @scotttovey ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RainCountryHomestead
      Unfortunately, not everyone has the type of soil that will grow crops with just manure. That is typically due to the soil being over used without being fed but some times it's just because the soil is too sandy and needs a few years of amending to change it's composition.
      Crops will grow in sandy soil, but not very good. Hollis on Hollis and Nancy's homestead is in sandy Florida and he said that he gets a better yield the second year after he starts using a garden area. That is because he amends his soil with black cow and it takes that year for it to break down properly. After that, a yearly treatment gives him good crop yields.
      The plants don't know the difference between the concentrated man made fertilizer and the natural fertilizer, but, people going without food will certainly know the difference if their soil is not up to growing a good crop.
      On the other hand, if you just happened to buy 40 acres of land that hasn't been farmed in a decade or two like Danny and Wanda on Deep South Homestead recently did, you may end up with soil that doesn't need a whole lot of amending.
      Soil is not always the same, and the land down the road from you may need to be treated differently than your land. So one has to investigate the soil before planting crops.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scotttovey Yes, of course I understand that not everyone has the same soil just like not everyone has the same climate and this is something I speak of in many of my gardening related videos but when I first started, I never used manure, that came later when it was available. In fact I used nothing we just tilled and started planting and I was able to grow quite a bit even in our soil that gets very depleted from our great amount of rains. My point is that no matter where one is, they can do something without having to spend a lot of money or go with synthetic fertilizers that though may still help the plant, CAN affect the quality of the food itself and the health impact it has

    "I'm not going to do blanket statements for everyone".
    Yeah, those tend to get really stupid really fast.
    Like the blanket statement that everyone needs to stop eating processed foods and canned foods.
    Really?
    Soooo, what are they going to eat?
    After all, there is something far worse and dangerous than eating all the processed food. It's eating too little food or no food at all.
    I can assure you from personal experience that; eating too little food, or no food at all; will kill you a whole lot faster, than eating all that processed food.
    If you want people to change their diets for the better, tell them to get the high fructose corn syrup out of their diet. That will cover the majority of bad stuff people eat, and that alone will improve their health which will then encourage them to look to the next step.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว

      If one has a choice of healthy, natural foods over highly processed, that is simply the obvious wise choice but when nothing else is available, yes, it is still food and has necessary calories. So as I say, put up the healthiest food you can but processed food is better than no food.
      I get irritated at the constant fear mongering of a whole natural food group. The latest now is seed oils including coconut, olive, and avocado and I am just not buying it. Then there are those that get on the keto diet and label all carbs as poison, no matter what their source and that is just dumb. Olive oil is not made from the seed.
      It is made from the olive itself and has been done that way for over 3000 years.
      It could be there is an idiot out there that decided they could save money by including the seeds in the mix.
