    Yes Ladies...We're putting BEEF FAT on our faces!! Come over to my kitchen and have some fun as we make Tallow Balm - that is actually quite wonderful. It's a homemade moisturizer scented with fragrant essential oils that will soften your skin beautifully and make you smell heavenly!! Love, Mary

      I think it's the most gentle type of oil/fat to use don't have to worry about any chemicals or worry about it going bad,not unless the liquid oils would be out of date.

      Dear Mary, thank you for sharing your expertise. I have made tallow balm with olive oil, but consistency became watery, it solidifies when i put in fridge, then once i take out of fridge after couple of hours becomes watery? Is that normal? How could i make them more solid as i want to give to my friends?

    • @MarysNest

      @@dariusanddara9854 - Great question! Are you using actually tallow made from suet? If so that should be quite hard and you should only be adding in a small bit of olive oil. If you are using a mock "tallow" made from miscellaneous beef fat, that will be much softer and create the problems you are talking about. Love, Mary

    Remember, bergamot can make you more photosensitive for about 2 days. I’m not sure if that is just the same area you put it on or if it is absorbed and makes your whole body photosensitive.

      @@MarysNest I've just started rendering my own tallow- I have cut seed oils out of my diet and just cooking with the tallow and duck fat as well as topically (tallow and castor). how long have you need using the tallow on your skin and internally before this video? Everyone who i see that uses tallow has skin that looks AMAZING and so young for their age- i have horrible skin and an very hopeful that over time it might reverse with this. 😊🙏

    I am going to render some beef suet I got from the local butcher shop, and use silicone baking cups. I thought I'd pour 1/4 cup of the rendered tallow in each cup, let it solidify, and store them in a wide mouth canning jar. That way I could easily take out how much tallow I would need for a recipe. Digging it out of a jar is hard work!

    This balm is like magic! I just made some for myself and my grandson, as we both struggle with eczema and very sensitive skin. With just olive oil added to the tallow, and no essential oils, it is the most soothing lotion I've ever tried. I mean, it's possible to just rub on straight tallow, but this form is so much nicer to use, and fun to watch whip up, as well! Thank you so much--the good you do keeps on helping others, Mary.

    Do you have a video of prepping the tallow?
    A thing to note about essential oils, they evaporate rather quickly. Putting them in oil slows the evaporation, but you are probably still losing quite a bit in the hour it sits out cooling. Since you whip it you'd get more from the essential oils if you added them during the whipping process.

    I can't remember if mentioned I finally tried this or not. It's a few days now into trying it and to say I love it is as big an understatement as is possible. I have loved my bee's wax hardened salves more than anything I could buy in a store, but the tallow takes it to a whole 'nother level. Possibly because tallow is more like our own body fat. It doesn't just set on top of the skin and protect it, it seems to actually absorb into the rough spots, bringing the hard, dry, flaky, cracked areas back at least 50% and I'm understating that, to keep anyone from being disappointed. I asked the man in the meat department of the grocery to save me a pound of the hard fat and it rendered to I'd say at least half that amount. I got the cracklings too brown and wound up having to 'wash' it at least 10 times; times 3 through 8 I added a sprinkle of baking soda and a few drops of vinegar to try and get the fried smell out of it. I wasn't sure it would work, but felt I had ruined it and had nothing to loose. The last wash was water only. Sounds like a lot of work, but it only took 5 minutes at a time. In the end, I had a beautiful, 100% scentless block of tallow. I made 1/4th of it into a salve using grape seed oil. Grape seed oil doesn't last long outside of the fridge, so I'm only taking a small jar out at a time to use, but it is the fastest absorbing oil I've found. I added a drop of oregano essential oil. My heels have never given up their crusty cracks without a long soak and scrub with sand paper! Until now. At first, especially if you are using it on your lips, it might feel almost waxy, but in a very few minutes that feeling goes away. You might be tempted to say I don't like the feel of this compared to other salves; even store bought chap sticks, but give it 5 minutes and you'll change your mind. I'll be saving my bee's wax for my favorite candle's. You, my dear are a national treasure!

    I suppose back in the day, women had to make their own moisturizer and this was a way of doing it. I wonder if they used flowers like lavender to give it a nice scent. Yep..you just mentioned rose hip oil. Will the castor oil have an odor? It is beautiful...like frosting. It looks so light! I was wondering about using it on the feet and then you said foot cream. Hmmmm. Who knew?

    Hi, Thank you for this video, I have questions :) I have read conflicting statements about the shelf life of tallow, from use within 3 months and keep refrigerated to it will last for several years no need for refrigeration. Please clear this up :) I am new to using tallow. Also if I choose to use some Squalane (EVO derived) along with other oils as you showed would it also be 1t.? Rose hips I also hear needs to be kept in the refrigerator and only last about 6 months, how then does it not go bad in the product? Again the huge difference in information. As you can see I need your help in this new tallow road. Thank you in advance.

    • @MarysNest
      @MarysNest  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ann, Great questions! As to the Squalane, etc., I do not know the answer. But yes, you are right. There is a lot of conflicting info. As to the tallow - it is very shelf stable. Tallow can be kept in your pantry and is naturally shelf stable for years. If it were to go rancid, you would know - as the smell would be very unpleasant. However, the "official" shelf life - as recommended by government agencies such as the United States Department of Agriculture - will state that the shelf life of tallow is 1 year. However, personally I have used tallow well past the 1 year mark and have found it to be quite fresh. Love, Mary

I like Mountain Rose Herb company because I believe them to be very reputable. Plus, their essential oils are organic. I do not like the oils that are sold by the multi-level marketing companies. I've been following your recipes - especially your bone broth recipes and I love them! I'm a bit lost though - I don't know what you mean by 'tallow'. I thought tallow was another name for the beef fat that hardens at the top of the broth. If it isnt (&Im sure im not alone in this), could you show me what it is and how I make it/get it please?

    • @MarysNest
      @MarysNest  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for visiting and for the kind words! Yes, you are correct - tallow is beef fat. And yes, that is what forms a solid at the top of bone broth. However, when you use tallow to make a cream, you want to use rendered tallow. This is just a simple process of heating the bones until the fat melts off then straining out any bits.
      The problem with using the tallow that has risen to the top of bone broth is that during the simmering process, it has also taken on the various odors, etc. from the veggies plus, it may contain a bit of water unlike tallow that is directly rendered from bones that have simply been heated. Hope this is clear. Please let me know if you have other questions. I am so happy to help!

      Thanks so much! I think they are the same. The whipped is just easier to apply. ❤️🤗❤️

    Do we really have to add oil to the tallow or could we just use it on the face as it is ? Also can I use jojoba or hemp seed oil with it ?

      Hi Tais, Thanks so much for visiting! Yes, you can add the tallow right to your face without adding any oil. It just might be a bit harder and slightly more difficult to spread around. But take a little bit of the tallow and warm it in your hands, then spread on your face and that should make it easier to spread. And yes, if you do want to use oil mixed in with the tallow, you can use any oil you find compatible with our skin. BTW - Do you enjoy making other traditional remedies and foods? I have a playlist of my videos titled "Mastering the Basics of Traditional Nutrient Dense Cooking". It's a series of 15 detailed videos that covers How to Make Bone Broth, Cultured Dairy, Ferments, Sourdough Starter (my foolproof stater), Sourdough Bread, and How to Soak and Sprout Grains to Make your own Sprouted Flour at Home. (Sorry to not put a direct link but I don't think YT likes us to put links in comments.) Please let me know if you have any questions. I'm so happy to help! And I’m so glad you’re here!! Love, Mary

    I mix mine with avocado oil and live it for my face. I like the idea of Rosehip and other oils. :)

    I've also noticed that many of the very high end expensive brands use tallow instead of the butters most pple use in products, don't know if this is the one thing that makes these rich pple look so good....lol

      @@MarysNest OH thank you so much i've been learning to make lotion but mine is just turning out way to slick like leaving mouse behind and leaving a grease feeling but then when i added the lard/tallow it took that grease feeling out, and i think alot of it is due to way to much coconut oil i used.
