  • The Rolling Stones Hackney Diamonds 2024 Tour has ended. 20 Shows - 44 Songs - Close to a million fans saw the shows. Here's my opinion on this miraculous tour - their age, their musical performance, the new band, guests, the Hackney Diamonds songs, Chanel Haynes, the setlists and the sound. My opinion of this historic Stones tour.

    Thank you for the complete review of the latest Rolling Stones 2024 US Tour. I was fortunate to see both Los Angeles shows a few weeks ago and "Fool to Cry" (Night 2) and "Beast of Burden" (Night 1) were my personal highlights. I captured both songs on video from the mid-level seats at SoFi Stadium and will cherish those memories for a long time.......Happy Birthday Mick Jagger!!

    Happy Birthday Sir Mick🎂 This was a very good overview of the tour. I'm sad that it's over. Of course, the merchandise continues. The new crystal commertive ticket is now available!!! I enjoyed both of my shows. The sound wasn't a problem in either New Orleans or Atlanta, but then again I was in the pit for both shows. I hope there is a residency at the Sphere. I would love that. I actually think it could happen sooner than later.

      You were damn near on the stage...if the sound wasn't good there, there's no hope. Lucky you my friend. If they play the sphere I'm there. The sound is beyond incredible. You have to be a good live band to play there, because every note is crystal clear. Based on The Stones performances this tour, they can do it.

    Thank you r the wrap up. Your love of the Stones and knowledge of their history is so deep that I look for your opinion on all things related to them. I loved the two shows I saw in Chicago and following each nights setlist along the tour. I am sure I not alone in just watching the deeper cuts from the tour on TH-cam post show. It is a shame of sorts that they haven't cycled out the well worn classics. Their bench is so deep that I truly believe they could play stadiums and put on a show to please all without them, I even think they could put that group of songs aside and put together another set of 20 to make a great show.
    I am a huge Dylan fan and enjoy seeing him and listening to what he has to offer that evening. However I pretty much go alone now as I don't think others will necessarily have an entertaining night. With The Rolling Stones it is a guarantee that it will be an exciting enjoyable show for all.

    I really appreciate the deep dive you took to present a thorough and honest assessment of the Hackney Diamonds Tour. I was at the MetLife concert that you attended, and I agree with most of what you said about that show. From my seat in a section of the 200s, the sound ranged from okay to bad to awful. Still, the concert was, for the most part, an awesome experience because of: Mick’s super human performances; the tightness of the band; the absence of lip syncing and playing to pre-recorded tracks; the really good set list (for a stadium show); and the palpable electricity generated by the audience. With Keith taking a backseat to Steve Jordan and Darryl Jones’ engine power, it is, as you said, a new musical leadership style for The Rolling Stones. Steve and Darryl certainly are a great rhythm team. But, as you pointed out, the rush of tension of the push and pull style of the original band is one of the many characteristics that made The Rolling Stones unique and especially exciting. I’ll always miss that, together with Charlie and Bill. Nevertheless, I guess it’s better to see two original Stones (and one who’s “almost original”) than none. Like all hardcore Stones fans, I, too, would prefer seeing the band in an arena, where some of the warhorses could be replaced by deep cuts. But I’d bet against that happening because economics is what it is. Like you, I’m very glad I was at the concert. But, having seen virtually every tour since 1975, I have to admit that the concert wasn’t among those that I loved the most.

    Thanks for the great wrap up, Alan...I'm glad you reviewed the tour at its close, since I wanted to impart my thoughts on the show I saw (Soldier Field, second night), but didn't want to usurp one of your other videos unrelated to it. Overall, a lot of the sentiments I expressed early on remain--the hope for longer sets, more deep/obscure song selection, more representation of the new album--but I guess this will be the prototype from now on. I mean, it's pretty much been this way since the Bigger Bang tour, but more evidently to me since 50 and Counting. I'm sure age, physical stamina and the constructs of a stadium show itself have a lot to do with it.
    As for the night I saw them at Soldier Field, I thought they were outstanding. The sound was, almost to my surprise, really good--it was very well balanced, not too boomy, and the guitars were very clear and punchy throughout. And, like you, we sat on the very upper shelf of the stadium--in fact, it is that singular top shelf on the west side of the structure--the part that really gives the place that Starship Enterprise look from afar that it has been criticized for--and I really have no complaints on the sound. It was a very cold night on the lake, and thankfully I had a hoodie in the car, or I would have had to spring $$$ for the hoodie at the merch tables. It felt a lot more like October than early summer. The vibe of the audience was very energetic and excited--however, much to my surprise, I did see some empty seats, particularly on the very low part of the stadium--something I have never seen at any Stones show, Soldier Field or otherwise. So there were a handful of empty seats on the lower section of the field, for what that's worth. Plus, and I'm sure they arrange seating in other venues the same way, the large section on the field far back from the stage was all General Admission standing room only--and there was a pair of back pockets unoccupied towards the back--again, a first, as the same set up for No Filter in 2019 had nary a gap.
    As for the songs themselves, I was most pleased to hear Rocks Off early in the set--and they ripped it! When they brought that into the live sets on Voodoo Lounge, it just lacked that loose, out of control feel on that tour, but this night, it sounded great. It didn't have that heated surge of '72, but Ronnie's guitar was thick and chunky--he spent most of the show on a pair of Les Paul's, a standard sunburst and a black beauty--and he nailed that sweaty Exile crunch beautifully. I think those beefier guitars work better on the Mick Taylor era stuff, as opposed to his usual Strat. The fan vote song was Shattered (I voted for Out of Control) and that sounded great as well. They brought out opening guest Lainey Wilson for a wistful Dead Flowers, and it sounded sublime. I was also thrilled at the extended jam arrangement of Miss You, which sounded hot and sleazy, with many great solo spots--Darryl, Carl and Mick on harp--one of the best versions I've heard of that classic. As for Keith, in addition to Tell me Straight and T & A, I was thrilled to hear Before they Make me Run, one of my personal favorites!
    Mick was, surprisingly, more subdued than usual, at least as far as his interaction with the audience was concerned. He didn't have as many of his wry asides, jabs at current events or local politicos--however he did make a comment regarding the Pride Parade, which was going on the same day, noting that he missed it because he was watching football, but did catch the naked bike ride! Before Paint It Black, he talked about how much Chicago means to them, and how inspired they've been by the many musicians that came from here. After Miss You, I began to get the feeling I've had at every show I've seen of theirs over the last 10 plus years--that it's going to end soon, and I wished it would go on longer. They snuck Paint It Black into the set late, thankfully, though I didn't get the b-stage acoustic blues set I've always wished for.
    As for what happens from here...I'm sure they will reconvene this in Europe next year, and maybe the middle east or South America thereafter. I too wish they would do arena or theater shows, rather than these massive stadium dates, and have more fun with their songbook. I'm not sure I see them doing a 'residency' type of engagement--though they do love playing Vegas. I think they were the first to headline the T-Mobile arena when that opened, and I think this was their second time through Allegiant, so I would think The Sphere would be a natural at some time in the near future.

      What a fantastic summation - The emotions are completely coming out and I love it. You really captured it. I'm so happy the sound for you was excellent, especially since you were in the sky, like me. Surprising but wonderful. I can't figure out the sound issues. It definitely varied from venue to venue and location within the venues. As you described, it is a muscular pretty tight band, but definitely pushed by the engine room. The rhythm section is very powerful and in some cases, very booming at least in some locations via the sound. I didn't see Miss You at my show, and of course it is very overplayed over the decades, but certainly this rhythm section and Darryl Jones bass really delivers Miss You in a huge way. Your description was terrific. Thanks so much for your wonderful on location review. Truly fabulous. Best, Alan

    Hi Alan,
    I’ve been to many Stones concerts throughout the years, but I have to say the one I just saw at Levi Stadium last week was one of the most enjoyable. Maybe it was because I wasn’t expecting such a great performance at their age or maybe it was because I shelled out to excellent seats , 10 rows from the stage.
    As far as future concerts, I would love them to do smaller arena tours where they just play entire classic albums, similar to the Who Quadrophenia Tour. Maybe an Exile On Main Street Tour, or a Beggars Banquet/Let It Bleed Tour would be fantastic. That would definitely weed out the bulk of causal Stones fans who just want to hear the greatest hits and make tickets more accessible to the hard core fans.
    I would be even happier if they went one step further and did a tour of only their entire early RnB covers in small theaters. I always imagined seeing the Stones at this age at some small club sitting on bar stalls churning out old blues songs. I know the Stones are truly amazingly at playing all sorts of genres, rock, country, gospel, funk, etc. but primarily for me, at their core they are a blues band. No other white person comes close to singing the blues better than Jagger. The Stones along with other British 60’s bands like the Yardbirds, the Pretty Things, the Animals, really turned me onto listing to the Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Sonny Boy Williamson. The Stones are so brilliant at covering all this old RnB music and putting their own stamp on it. A concert of them doing this stuff would be my dream, but I know it will never happen.

I saw the 2nd Metlife show, and for a stadium show, it was a great setlist, possibly the best or 2nd best of the tour. So if I was up close, like 10th row, oh man, it would have been a totally different experience. First the sound would've been great and being that close - In fact I've never been that close at a Stones show. Absolutely incredible. I don't see them ever doing a "deeper" tracks concert except when they do those small theater shows, and I've never gotten into one of them. - pretty much have to be an insider or know someone or be very lucky. - I've never been that lucky...lol. Well, I attended the Atlanta show and thought that was the best one of the tour. That’s the show that debuted Keith doing three songs. Unfortunately, that seemed to be at the expense of Sweet Sounds of Heaven. The guitars were loud and in your face with a dash of their characteristic flying by the seat of their pants-playing.
    Midnight Rambler was amazing. I think Ronnie has been using more distortion ever since 2015 on that particular song and it has elevated it, imo. I also thought that this tour’s version of Gimme Shelter was one of the best in their career. Keith’s dedication to nailing the intro paid dividends and Chanel’s take on the classic made it even more special.
    I agree that them being more adventurous with the setlist would be cool to see. However, the warhorses hit different live. At least this is what I’ve found out. I don’t get to see them regularly whenever they tour North America , so this obvious observation had been eluding me, I guess. I don’t think Mick and co. really gave me much room to complain.
    Btw, Rick Beato interviewed the guy that mixes the Stones live about a month or so ago. In essence, the less cavernous a stadium, the better the sound quality. Best case scenario for a big outdoor show would be a big flat field. Here’s the link if interested: th-cam.com/video/uEcx9gdhdbw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9SjtSkOY89oonPPh

      Thanks so much for your comments - so glad you loved the Atlanta show so much. That's fabulous. I was really surprised when Keith went to 3 songs. Also greatly disappointed when they dropped Sweet Sounds Of Heaven, but they of course brought it back. Perhaps Jagger was having trouble with it then, but I've no idea. I saw the first Midnight Rambler of the tour. The terrible sound certainly didn't help it. I saw that Rick Beato interview. It's not just me, the sound of this tour, depending on location varied greatly and was sometimes absolutely awful. And it's not just the stadium, because I've seen other shows there, including The Stones. And I've had comments from many from other locations. Something was off, depending on location.

    great analysis and overview! and yes, I do absolutely agree with you on everything, I would love to hear more deeper tracks, I will never ever understand those people who would just like to hear the same setlist at every single show just to have a good time with their friends and get drunk, it’s never been my intention and will never ever be, I’m there for the music and to hear different songs live, it’s what I’m all about, I’m sad the tour is over and I’m even sadder that this was potentially my last time ever seeing them as I saw them in Vegas in May, but knowing the stones, it’ll never be for sure, I’m just hoping they extend the tour, and yes I have heard the rumors about the South America leg of the tour for next year so I’m hoping we get another North American leg sometime in 2026? but I don’t think I’ve heard anyone talk about just how great Steve Jordan had sounded and improved on this tour, I was very highly impressed, he improved very vastly in start me up, he sounded very generic on that song on the no filter tour and the sixty tour but was very good on it on this tour, I think he still had a lot of heavy weight on his shoulders on the no filter tour and very understandably so, and he only played Keith’s songs very very top notch considering he played them very well with Keith in the winos, but when Charlie passed, there wasn’t anyone who I could think of that could fill those shoes drumming wise but personally and professionally wise, Steve was that man and he was the obvious candidate and he absolutely proved it on this tour, and touching on the sphere topic, yes, I do see them playing the sphere but I don’t see why they haven’t played there already, I know for sure they have the money to afford the stones, seeing as they brought in big names like U2 and now the Eagles, and those prices are absolutely outrageous! I really don’t see how they haven’t got big names like the stones or Paul McCartney yet, it absolutely blows my mind, but yea the stones are an absolute no brainer, but they would probably have a short run at first and seeing or depending on how the high demand is will probably extend it, but I would absolutely be furious and livid if the setlist is the same and or close to being the same at every show, n I know I’m late but I saw the U2 show at the sphere in February and it was phenomenal! Ik people were complaining about Larry not being there but I thought Bram did an absolute stellar job in filling in for Larry but that’s just my opinion and I was in the pit just 3 people behind the rail, keep up the great work Alan!

      Thanks so much for your fantastic comments. I totally agree with you regarding The Stones setlist wise. As you mentioned U2 at the Sphere. That was possibly the greatest concert I ever saw (certainly way up there). I never heard sound like that - crystal clear, loud, yet not loud. Literally heard every note. At that time, I had said in my U2 Sphere review that I couldn't see The Stones pulling it off, they're just not that tight, but I think now that could. They can certainly do a great visual show. But of course it definitely would be the same old show of classics unfortunately. Look what U2 did - played the whole Achtung Baby album with a relative few other classics....and it was like the greatest concert ever. Oh if The Stones had that kind of balls / setlist creativity. You are so right, sad that Larry couldn't make it, but Bram was perfect on the drums. And yes Jordan is about as good as can get to replace Charlie. Thanks so much again.

      @@christianayvar3190 Of course, I really don't know. Keith had said if he, Jagger or Watts died, they would never continue. Well that didn't last long...lol. They're playing pretty great this tour, so I see them continuing till they can't do it. With the music world now have "bands as brands" and the crowds going out to see them with one member, two and often no members (hello Foreigner, Lynyrd Skynyrd) etc. It's all about branding. Look at The Eagles. they could never continue without Don Henley or Glenn Frey...well they did and no one cares. They still draw huge and no one cares. Today's world, I can see "casual" fans seeing the Stones with no one in it, as crazy as that sounds. Us big fans who take this stuff so seriously, and boy do I, are way in the minority. 95% of fans don't care who's in the band. Just play the same hits over and over and they're there. It's really sad ....really...but I don't know. I don't get it. I imagine with Mick and /or Keith they would continue. Woody not so much as big a factor I figure. The fact that they changed up the set list was impressive So many bands play the same songs every night and the between song banter never changed (Jethro Tull anyone?) I agree with you on this version of Gimme Shelter which is my favorite Stones song.
    The sound was great where I sat at the show we both attended. Bad sound for a tour like this is unforgivable.

      Thanks so much Larry. It is fantastic that they would add one or two "deeper tracks" in the show. But I just find the deeper tracks so much more interesting and exciting. The format of this show is pretty much the same as the last 20 years....well not totally as they did play Hackney Diamonds stuff - it's definitely an improvement but I guess I just want more deeper tracks and less "classic" that have been played to death. But I get it. I'm in the 10 percent.

    A very good review, I agree with almost everything, but would it really be a Stones show without Flash, otherwise completely agree, I saw the first show in Chicago and I was in section 108 and I, and a gentleman who came from Dublin sitting next to me thought that the sound was terrific, and again as you said location location location, but I was just happy to see them out there at their age playing rock&roll, this is new territory for any rock band that has played since the 60s, but I was happy, money well spent, I hope that they continue, but in my opinion these are the last shows we've seen in the States, I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see a quick turnaround for a South American or European tour and where does that leave the States, thanks for mentioning my Stones brother Hendrik, thanks!!

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks so much. Hendrik's work on the Stones is way beyond my wildest dreams so I'm grateful for his song statistics that he posted. Wonderful of him. They don't play Brown Sugar - unquestionably one of the highlights of every Stones show for decades. They didn't play Satisfaction in 1972 or 1975.....it's not missed!!! They have so many amazing songs. They can bypass all the songs in that first column (minus the Hackney Diamonds song) and they wouldn't be missed by the big Stones fans. And new fans will fall in love with the deeper classics. Shit the deeper classics are even that deep. lol. They're well known songs - oftentimes were hit singles. But yea, I went because I figured this would be it in the US. We will have to see. I'm glad I went. Really enjoyed myself. But this show doesn't even register on my favorite Stones concerts (or even concerts in general) lists.

    Just one thought.as to setlist. You (like me) have watched this band through the years many times. You always have to appreciate that every tour brings thousands of first time fans, they want and need to see the 'warhorses' and unless they play 30+ song sets (like Springsteen) it is an impossible job to play deep cuts only.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Totally true and I understand it. But other legacy artists and have moved past that - beyond Springsteen, Dylan plays shows with no warhorses as does Neil Young. U2 has done that as well. I thought this being a "new" Rolling Stones, could've been an opportunity to start "new" - go beyond this 20 year concert run of basically the same thing (well of course the new tour featured Hackney Diamonds - which is amazing). I totally get it and 90% want this. I, selfishly, would love that. They do it in their "surprise club shows" - do it for us all now.

    Alan, do you know when was the last time the Stones played an indoor arena in the US? I know they sometimes do play indoor arenas overseas, but maybe that just be me projecting. When do the fan song pick, I'm assuming it's a song they have rehearsed? I can't see them playing 'Tell Me' from their debut album even if it's not a well known song. 'Sweet Virginia' and 'Torn and Frayed' are great deep cuts from 'Exile on Main Street', but never played on the radio (at least I never heard them on the radio). Another song from 'Steel Wheels', "Blinded by Love', again a deep cut. It would great if they did a series of shows playing deep cuts, but that probably won't happen. I would like if they played indoor arenas more, that may not happen either.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The fan vote is "fun", but certainly no surprise for the band. They soundcheck them before the show and are well prepared for the song. There's even some debate if the votes count, but I'm guess they do, though I am surprised sometimes by the "winning song". Last time The Stones played arenas in the US was 50 and Counting Tour of 2012 / 2013 - played select arena shows - was a lot of money and select dates. One show at MSG, two shows at Prudential in NJ, two at Staples Center. That was the start of these smaller tours with select shows. Expensive and not easy to get tickets for and typical set list.

    I only needed to see The Rolling Stones once on this tour ( ticket prices and repetitive set lists over the years sealed that deal for me.) The sound for me was great from where I was standing in the front, but I did get a bootleg from that Seattle show from Argentina and it was heavy on the bass on some of the tracks, probably sounds like yours. I'm glad I went because it may be 'The Last Time' i'll ever see them.

      Thanks Tarr. I felt the exact same way....and when you look in your heart...that says a lot. When I left the show, it left little impression - just a fun...great night out (well if the sound was better). I LOVED the first half...the second half, was good fun entertainment as I danced and sang to songs I've heard live countless times... left, like you, feeling no need to see this ever again. I'm curious to see the future. If they continue to play live, I hope they completely change their outlook. I vote all deeper, but commercial tracks and the fan vote should be on warhorses.

      I agree that it didn't meet the heights of the original version with Lady Ga Ga. I also miss the false ending. Even though we all knew it was coming, it was still very effective. Chanel is a powerhouse, but I don't think she has the range of Lady Ga Ga (or Lisa Fischer), so didn't quite reach those heights. I still really liked it though. I wouldn't have placed it in the first encore spot either though.
