How Intermittent Fasting Affects Your Body and Brain | The Human Body

  • Stars like Beyonce and Hugh Jackman have spoken out about following intermittent fasting plans to get in shape. How does intermittent fasting work? Here's what actually happens to your body and brain when you fast. Following is a transcript of the video.
How long has it been since you last ate? People who fast intermittently often eat within an 8-hour block, leaving 16 hours of fasting in between. During that 16-hour stretch, their bodies undergo an important change that sets them apart from non-fasters.
    Here's how it works.
When you eat, you store some of that energy in the liver as glycogen. But after 10-12 hours of not eating, your glycogen reserves will be extremely low. As a result, you may feel more irritable than normal, a term scientists call "hangry."
The upside is - with little glycogen left - fat cells in your body release fats into your bloodstream. The fat cells head straight to your liver, where they're converted to energy for your body and brain. So, you are literally burning fat to survive.
Blood samples show that people who had fasted for 12-24 hours experienced a 60% increase in energy from fat, with the biggest change occurring after 18 hours. This is the benefit to intermittent fasting because it puts you in a state called ketosis. And it's why researchers think intermittent fasting could be the key to a longer, healthier life.
The process of burning fat releases chemicals called ketones. In the brain, ketones trigger the release of an important molecule called BDNF. BDNF helps build and strengthen neurons and neural connections in areas of the brain responsible for learning and memory. Which could explain why a boost in ketone production has been shown to improve memory in people with early signs of dementia in as soon as 6 weeks. Increasing ketones in the body is also a common treatment for patients with severe epilepsy.
You don't necessarily have to fast to boost your ketone levels. Introducing more fatty foods into your diet and cutting back on carbs can have a similar effect. A group of people who tried this method for 3 months not only lost weight and body fat, but also saw a decrease in blood pressure and a hormone (IGF-1) that is related to aging and disease.
But scientists have discovered that fasting increases ketone levels more. Ketogenic diets can increase ketones 4-fold whereas fasting has been shown to increase ketones by up to 20-fold. As a result, fasting - compared to a ketogenic diet - may have a stronger, more beneficial effect on overall health.
Yet many Americans who eat three meals a day with snacks in between never reach ketosis, and therefore aren't producing enough ketones to promote good health.
Fasting and ketosis have been a key to our survival from the beginning. They helped our ancient ancestors survive through bouts of starvation.
And today, they're becoming recognized as a way to help keep future generations mentally and physically disease-free.

They don’t even mention the best benefits
    1) Being in a fasted state allows the body to autophage (clean up) senescent cells (your old cells that have accumulated junk protein products and have now stopped reproducing). Senescent cells are associated with ageing, and may be precancerous cells. Multiple studies, including a 2009 Nature review article, have looked at the association between fasting, aging and cancer. Several proteins such as SIRT1 and and HUR are known to be involved, and although the complete bio-molecular pathway is not yet identified, but current findings are promising. This is all related to the studies showing that calorie restriction (therefore fasting) reliably increases lifespan 30-50% across diverse mammalian species (rats, dogs, etc).
    2) Being in a fasted state is when the recycling of old and defective mitochondria occurs. Mitochondria are your cellular power plant, there are thousands of them within each cell, and they convert glucose into ATP, the energy molecule uses by intracellular processes. Similar to senescent cells, old mitochondria have accumulated damage to their DNA as well as degraded proteins and, when defective, they produce more reactive oxygen species (ROS) than clean energy (ATP).
Overall, it seems our bodies are great at clean up and healing on a cellular level when they aren’t busy breaking down food and converting it into new proteins or fats.
    :)

Been doing keto and fasting for 6 months. I've dropped 40 lbs, from 185 to 145, and haven't felt this great since I was in my teens. I'm 30 now and am never going back to the inflammatory carbs that plagued my life. It was a roller coaster of physical aches and pains and erratic emotional states that will not be missed. I would encourage anyone to give keto and IF a try. Keto is a very demanding diet and requires a lot of maintenance but if done correctly the benefits FAR outweigh the initial minor inconveniences. If you're considering taking on a healthy lifestyle such as this I suggest you do as much reading into the subject as you can before embarking on the journey (as there is a lot of misinformation out there). Keto and fasting can change your life for the better in ways you would have never thought. What we put into our bodies as sustenance impacts our day to day lives more than we know until we change it!

The deeds will be rewarded in accordance with their intentions on the Day of Judgement.
If someone fasted with the intention of weight loss so that he/she may show off a body and their private parts on the beach which is unlawful in order to get the attention and praise from people, then that's a minor polytheism in the intention a major sin of exposing one's private parts and causing corruption in the land that may lead to zina (illegal sexual intercourse).
The fasting for Allah is to attain Taqwa and a pure heart free from corrupt intentions like Ar-Riyaa' (showing off) which is the minor polytheism that invalidates the deeds on the Day of Judgement.
It was narrated from Mahmoud Ibn Labeed رضى الله عنه:
That the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
      إِنَّ أَخْوَفَ مَا أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمُ الشِّرْكُ الْأَصْغَرُ

      قَالُوا: وَمَا الشِّرْكُ الْأَصْغَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟

Walk in nature daily while still in a fasted state is also a game changer- this is part of my lifestyle and it's healing in so many ways. Come to think of it, it kind of resembles our ancestors starting their days by walking and foraging for food...

Kinda makes a lot of sense when you stop and think about how our ancient ancestors lived as hunters.
They would wake up in the morning and have to go out into the wilderness to hunt for food which could take hours, if not all day, to find pray/food. This activity was a daily intense workout for survival. Then they would eat and eat until it was dark/bedtime. Everyday the same thing for hundreds of thousands of years. Then it was only in the last 10,000 years that we started farming and storing food, gradually getting less and less active compared to our hunter/gatherer ancestors as the centuries went by.
And now we are here today with “unlimited” food available to us 24/7 365 days a year, with hardly any kind of physical activity in our daily routine and we wonder why first world countries are so damn fat!!!

I'm 37 weeks pregnant with my first baby, and I have an 8 year history of a battle with bulimia.
I was already recovered for more than a year when I fell pregnant, but you can understand I was terrified of pregnancy weight gain and my body changes and how my mind was going to cope with it all.
I have fasted majority of my pregnancy and have only gained 7kg/15lbs and I started at a healthy weight, so I'm really happy with that.
I doubt I'll have much to lose at all - and baby is healthy as can be and measures and weighs as he should.
Even my doctor said to me "It's so much easier when you don't gain a lot of weight, isn't it?"
I eat 2000 calories and day and almost daily 40 minute walks on top :).

I'm doing intermittent fasting again this time eating two meals breakfast and lunch in a 8 or 6 hour time space then I fast for the rest of the time.
My issue with dieting was I could never eat less food I eat a lot so having six small meals in a day failed but with intermittent fasting it's either food or no food at all, in my two meals I eat as much as I want which satisfies me enough to not eat anything for 16 to 18 hours.

  • @omeatai

Tip 1: Change your mindset about food. Find a reason why you should fast daily.
Tell yourself: "I dont need food to be happy or active. I always feel better when i do not eat..." If you are a Christian then you can add this: "It helps curb my desires and gives me more time to think and pray"
Tip 2: Intermittent Fasting is a must do. Forget about keto diet, etc cos they are temporary and not habitual... IF is habitual and sustainable. Do not fast less than 16 hours a day. I do 18 or 20 daily, and drink water regularly...
Tip 3: Meal prep is very important... Make sure you prepare your meals to last for at least 1 week, and they are easily microwaveable. It will stop you from eating unhealthy or unplanned meals. Ensure you add alot of veggies to your meals like carrots, beet, greens, ball peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc... They boost metabolic burning process and make your food rich...
Tip 4: Less cardio, more strength exercises... Cardio makes you exhausted when fasting, but strength makes you feel stronger and muscle building increases your daily metabolic burning rate...
I am 1-2 months in, already burnt more than 30% body fat, fitting into old clothes, feeling healthier, lighter and stronger...
    CONSISTENCY IS KEY!!!
I wish you the best 👍

I generally skip breakfast and try not eat until lunch the next day. Somewhere between 14-18 hours depending on when I ate the night before. Some days are easier than others. It’s best if you are busy and don’t have to think about not eating. Also I find it easy to workout while fasting. Maybe not an intense 1 hour HIIT cardio or ten mile run. But a good 30 minutes. You will be amazed at how clear your mind is because your organs are not breaking down foods and sugars etc….

I used to always eat breakfast every morning because I thought it was ‘the most important meal of the day’.
Now, I never eat before noon (unless I’m on vacation or it’s a special occasion). I wake up feeling light and full of energy. It’s amazing. And on rare occasions when I do eat breakfast, I feel bloated and sluggish all day. Feet feel heavy and everything. Unless you have a medical issue that requires you to eat in the morning, I recommend IF. It completely changed my life. I tried soooo hard to lose weight for so long and just could not do it. Once I got into this Only eating from noon-8 pm routine, I dropped 15-20 pounds so quickly.
Basically, what I’m trying to say is, Breakfast is extremely overrated.

Intermittent fasting works as long as It supplements a healthy eating habbit. Cutting corners on meals and their content will most likely end in a shortcircuit.

I was given a lot of anti-depressants. And those affected my memory so bad. I started IF fasting and my memory is practically back to normal now. I had the memory of a goldfish but now I remember things that happened prior and happened recently. I finally feel normal and not lost or confused. And being sedentary, I have lost 30 pounds in 4 months with IF

Been doing IF/OMAD for about a month and a half and I have lost almost 20lbs. It really works guys. And you feel so much better. I also have more energy then when I ate a few times a day. It's to the point now where everyone can be eating McDonald's or sweets next to me and I don't think twice about it!

Thank you for the break down. I looked into this because I've been interested in water fasting and intermittent fasting so i naturally became curious of the general duration I should do either before i start feeling and seeing the results of the fast. This offered quite a bit of clarity, thanks again.

Excellent summary of some of the benefits of intermittent fasting. To lose weight the healthy way you need to burn fat. To lose weight the unhealthy way is to lose muscle.

This is actually one of the best ways to lose weight since you are actively burning fat while doing nothing as long as you follow the 8-10 hours in between without eating

I’m actually surprised people have a name for this. I’ve been eating 1 meal a day since I came into college. Occasionally I’ll indulge in two but one meal for an hour max saves so much time for other things. It’s obviously not for everyone and I’m used to it, but it’s worth a try if you can get over the initial humps

IT genuinely saved me lol. When on my previous diet I thought my metabolism was completely broken. Turns out I completely underestimated the amount of cals I was eating. Now I fast for abt 19-22 hours from 14:00 to 12:00 the next day, which pretty much lets me eat whatever I want as an Omad n I’m losing abt a pound to a kilo per week. Fast gang ough ough

I been doing intermittent fasting for 3 weeks and I work on the roof. I have energy upon energy to do the work. I've seen an increase in faster movement and motivation. My jobs is base off of peice rate meaning I get paid for what I do and I out do all the younger guys over and over. I am turning 31 in may and since then that I've been losing weight by doing intermittent fasting I've increase my performance at work and also increase my mental state. I feel good but I tell you what... the first weeks was the worst... so hungry.... so hungry... then the second week passed and what do you know, it is alot easier to maintain. Black coffee, green tea, Kombucha ( during meals), apple cider vingear and water are my main things to kick the hunger out. I still eat the good old meals such as ribeyes and new yorks strips and I do try to excerise regularly 3 to 5 times a week and the results are there.
    Best of Luck,
    Chan Ke

I eat from 10 am to 6 pm. It is the only thing that keeps me consistently lean without feeling super deprived. I can also eat pizza, cookies etc here and there. A diet restricts these foods and when you start eating them again you increase your weight. Fasting is the long term solution.

But I've changed the timing slightly in that earlier I used to fast from 8 PM till 12 PM the next day but now it's 6 PM till 10 AM the next day so that I can eat something healthy before going to the office.
