As long as people evolve and are allowed to change their minds and get bored, industrial design is here to stay. Production will move to different countries, because labour is cheaper, but the designers will be the experts with regards to local ergonomics and culture. So it doesn't matter where you are located as long as you stay up to date. Industrial design is a carrier where you will spend your life learning.
Except that as those jobs move overseas so do the design jobs. It's been happening for a while now. Lots of product manufactures now offer design FREE as part of the buy in make your product. This has put a lot of design studios in the US out of business.
@@2Bluzin Asking a woodworker to make a chair might seem a reasonable idea. But the woodworker will never look beyond his tool-chest. And anything else then wood is not on the table.
Designers need to teach their clients that having a designer in their team opens-up possibilities that will lead to much more revenue then any "free" design will ever save them.
@@crystallizeallrounddesignc9262 Well but that is what those companies are doing in China. Their client, is the one asking for a 10,000 widgets to be made by them, and the free design part is their in house industrial designer for the client. Lots of companies go straight there now and dont even think about talking to a design firm or independent designer here in the US when they can have a turn key one stop shop with a trained designer included. And for free no less.

As jimmy said, to be an industrial designer you’ll have to develop a ton of skills. After graduation I started as a 3D modeler for a production agency designing stages for conventions and events. Couple yours into the future I was the creative director of the agency. I ended quitting that job and as for now, the agency is having a rough time, but in not. I’m freelancing as an illustrator, 3D modeler, video editor, making graphic motions, etc.
Industrial design will always be relevant and a good path, I’ve learn that industrial designers make tools for the human, and even in this time, we still need to improve chairs, desk, laptops. Times are changing and products will change because the industrial design will become more and more relevant.
I studied industrial design but wasn't great at sketching. Made getting an "industrial design" job VERY difficult. My career started in a commercial 3D printing company, then went to Prothetic leg manufacture, then architectural perforated sheet metal (CNC operator, programmer and draftsman) and now commercially made 3D printed orthotics. Basically I work in advanced manufacturing.
I think Jimmy pointed out a couple of very solid key takeaways; 1. If you invest in yourself you will reap major dividends if you are passionate about what you do and 2. design and creativity will always be well compensated since they are very often at the heart of innovation and creating new services and or products. You should all read "The Green Imperative" by Victor Papanek since in the book this amazing designer speaks about the future of industrial design from back in the late 60's and 70's. Bottom line guys, design is problem solving at it's finest, and regardless if it's in the form of graphic design, illustration, fine art, environmental, transportation or industrial design. Smart, curious and intellectual people will always be needed and be in demand.

This is such good advice. I’m a industrial designer. This is like church for me. I create products on baseball, hockey, cycling products and sporting goods. No one is going to give you permission to be a industrial designer you need to take action and create your own role and follow through on your ideas and the ideas of the people you work with. It’s time consuming, difficult, and stressful but nothing is more rewarding than finished product.
I went to Trade School for game design and then landed a job as an Industrial Designer. I had to catch up on soooo much about this industry it’s been a wild ride. There is definitely money in it if you keep at it.

I'm a product design graduate, experienced model maker and i think you finally took the shame i had in admitting i did study product design because i do use my knowledge and skills in model and pattern maker, but somehow i always felt like i was underachieving. Thank you for that. Also, even if it's not a fancy job title or a clean desk job with streamlined desks and the best apple technology, i absolutely love it. It's very hard to explain this in a family of doctors and engineers, though.
I think what people don’t understand is if you want good money, no matter what job it is it’s going to be hard but if u enjoy it, it’s much more rewarding.

Industrial Design for me is also a way of living.
A way of seeing things and approaching problems as possibilities.
Your mind is set to having always a plan B, and with every project you will be reinventing yourself, so you will be surprised how easily you can adapt to any uncertainty.
And if you are passionate about it, as a consequence you'll be more than fine.

Jimmy love your videos, they were actually part of the reason I switched from Mechanical Engineering to ID. I've just recently graduated from Auburn University and loved every minute of my time as an ID student. Currently looking at jobs in the consumer electronics field as well, with SteelSeries out here in Chicago. If youre a graphic designer looking for a change...I don't suggest Industrial design at this point. Ive been an Industrial Des for 16 yrs including graduating from Art Center College of Des. Managing a design studio of really great industrial designers. Worked mostly in consumer electronics. The amount of different skills you'll need, learning curve, time required to acquire the skills, constant learning and work required for the payback is pretty lame to be blunt. And there aren't so many jobs out there. The career is capped for 95% of ID at senior levels. I know a lot of Art Center grads that work as Sr ID for 15 yrs.

I can totally agree with this. Right now i finished college and instantly found a job. I get paid way more then average and i am pretty sure it is cause of the effort i put in. I bought a bunch of online courses covering CAD, Adope and so on and used pretty much all of my freetime to improve my skills. When i first started with ID i was worried to not find a Job and i heard from many other students that they have trouble finding a job or getting exploited.
Bro, I like being creative and designing stuff but the thing is: I always think about the environmental impact that goes with mass production and materialistic consumer society. Can you tell me how Industrial Design is more than that? Because I sometimes tend to think there's no real need for new physical user products because most a man needs is already designed, right? Also, how does Industrial Design relate to and what role does it play in the major issues such as climate change, overpopulation, scarcity of resources etc?
Like I really think I'd enjoy creating, designing, drawing, presenting and helping people but then sometimes my values show up and they tell me to not be a part of this because I think it is based on materialism. Bro, I have this irrational thinking that if I'd create a product, some children and men in some poor countries will have to actually mass produce it and ship it to western society. I always think about that and I know it's based on false information and illogical thinking but still. (btw I'm hypocrite as fuck because personally I waste so a lot of resources) Anyway I just can't create a clear vision within this field for let's say 'making the world better'.
Can you tell me what Industrial Design is about from an ethical perspective. Like can you tell me the moral good and bad aspects of creating new (physical) products.
Like how much percent of Industrial Design is based on the things that really have and leave a positive impact on the world.
P.S. I know my life is the way it is because of the things around me and that the total accumulative effect of product- and industrial design has helped me consciously as well as unconsciously in an uncountable amount of ways. im thankful for that.

I know I'm not Jimmy, but I've worked in industry for 35 years and this something I've spent a LOT of time thinking about myself so I thought I would share my perspective. Industrial design is something that is never going to go away. Moving forward it can be a resource wasting, pollution causing, quality of life eroding, consumeristic pursuit or it can become the path to lower consumption, proper life balance, and a more egalitarian world.
Think about being asked to design a product. You, as the industrial designer on the project, can either create the design with no thought to the resources it might consume, or you can design something that uses fewer resources or new materials that are less harmful to the environment or more ethically manufactured. You might say, at this point, "but how can I influence the product enough to do any of that?" and to that I would say that the 'average' American chews 300 sticks of gum a year. The population of the US is 329 million people. That's 98 trillion gum wrappers per year. And since a lot of gum has a foil wrap on the inside and a paper one on the outside, it might be twice that many.
That's a lot of paper and foil. In the landfills or as litter in the environment. Now consider, then, what it would mean if you, as the designer, came up with an innovative way to remove the need for two wrappers or were able to suggest an alternative that was biodegradable. Or, even just reduce the amount of material used by 30%. A gum wrapper is , in general terms, a 2 in square. That's 16.4 trillion square feet of paper. If universally adopted that new gum wrapper, which would be cheaper to produce because it uses less materials, would reduce the amount of waste. 30% of that is 4 trillion square feet of paper that you, as a designer, might be able to remove from the supply/demand chain.
The demand for these consumer goods is not going to go away. We need ethical, moral people in the industry to guide it and transform it into something better than it is now, to help make the world a better place.
You might want to consider environmental design instead!
Greetings from Germany, same thoughts here. So i work with new materials which influenced my graduate classes in university and will always become a part of further projects, and there are alot of needs out there in society and industry. Everbody is looking for those aspects what u described. But yes greenwashing is a big thing. Efficiency like a comment before is an other thing. But not a really change isnt it? Climate is changing and the world needs people that take on and develop things by themselves. So if u are a moral ethical person and loves to create and designing objects, research it, build it and show it. Like Mycoworks, Klarenberk or so many others. It is definitely possible. But it is maybe the time for new understanding what design is and use for. Efficiency only is not a solution. Greenwashing is using stupidity of people and the most bad thing in design at all. And at least, design is humancentered, but becomes more and more animal aided, systemically, transitional. Maybe it will helps you if i tell u i will focused this part of product designer, because the people will need biobased solution, this could be a ethical and moral correct design work and your are not alone with this.
Few years back I stumbled upon this Wilson's show, where you design golf clubs/drivers! I really loved your design... If possible can you please make a video on what went through while designing the drivers.
Agreed, you have to be good, and to be good, it takes passion. Excel and be agile. First ID job after graduating, 40k annual in South Florida (2012). Now I'm in LA, at the 6-digit pay mark.
I like to say ID is a jack of all trades. Upholstery/fashion/hands-on prototyping/manufacturing processes/UX/UI/ergonomics/storytelling/presenting/illustration(traditional &digital)/photography/compositing/rendering/3D model(almost every software!)/researcher/forecaster/ and be good at traits such as fast/unbiased/willing to sit through meetings time zones across the globe, email attentive, and coffee drinker hah.
As an industrial design artist, i try to keep that mentality of working hard to have better results when i graduate, but sometimes i feel like i´m working too hard and wasting those "college years" that everybody says that are so good. But on the other hand i do really enjoy what i'm learning and i feel bad when i don´t give my best. Idk, i think that those kind of questions come up during the whole learning process and it´s kind of hard sometimes

This is so helpful! I'm an architect thinking of pivoting to industrial design. I already do 3d modelling but have been upskilling doing 3d motion graphics, branding and art direction, etc. I just really want to produce beautiful lighting and furniture but I thought being an industrial designer would just allow me to be a lot more flexible and design anything!

Mfg’g Engineer Degree, 5 years in Aerospace (machining), then back to CSULB for ID Degree. While studying ID, got a job designing & eng’g furniture, production methodology, buyer, customer svs, you name it. Prior to graduation, I accepted a Sr. Product Dev Engineering position (10 yrs), product design/project mgmt in MX & China, Prod & QEng'g, branding, + authored & illustrated over 40 patents where 21 were granted.
Consulted Eng’g firms & product designers, did logos, pkg’g design, developed/sold my own products, NPD & Quality Engineering for office chair manufacturer (10 years), and now I’m back full circle designing consumer products. Ha! My boss asked me to teach an art class for the office staff. I’m in!!

Hey Jimmy, I really appreciate your videos and they have definitely helped me understand the job title of what I want to do. I've had a really hard time articulating what I want to do and started out thinking maybe graphic design or even a trade like carpentry. Then it was Mechanical Engineer, and now finally I do believe I want to be an industrial designer. It combines every aspect of my skills and interests into one field. So thank you for doing a video on the distinctions.
My question is HOW do I know if I'm a good industrial designer? Is it something I should have a sense of before I start school, or is it something I have to find out by going to school?

Everyone has the potential to be a good industrial designer. All of the fundamental skills are taught to you in ID school. The key to success is in believing in yourself and working hard to master these skills. They are not something that you are born with nor are they intrinsic talents. Industrial design can be learned just as any other discipline can be learned. At the end of the day if you have designed something that is 1. Visually beautiful, 2. produced successfully with current technologies, and 3. serving the needs of the user, then you are a good industrial designer. Mastering the skills taught to you in school will lead to these three things. I hope this helps!

Oh my god, I’m a high school student debating whether to pursue music or industrial design. On one hand, I love music and making it. I love learning about music theory, playing the guitar, writing and composing music, etc. but on the other hand, I can be creative and come up with designs and product ideas which fits the industrial design field. It’s a more practical career and less risky than going into the music field. I don’t know if I should play it safe and not waste money on music school or if I should go for it

Amrutha vids I don’t live in India, I was born in America but my parents were raised there. From what I know about India (from visits) I think it would be great for India to have more creative designers. I think there is a fairly high demand for them. I know that if I lived in India and pursued this career, I would create and design products that were “green” and helped reduce pollution. Last time I visited, the pollution and smoke was so strong. I love India and the culture, but I can’t help but notice these issues when I visit. If designers could create products to reduce or fix these issues, I think that would be amazing. I’m sorry, I don’t know if this was any help. It’s a big decision, deciding how you’re going to spend your life. Good luck!

@@kotlapranav As of yet, Its more like just industrial engineering, there's not much design going on in my studies as of yet, theres alot of math,physics, alot of practical things with wood and metal while using CNC machine, learning how tu use autocad and solidworks

I want to ask you how do you feel with "Industrial design engineering", currently I'm studing that and I love it, I know it's quite different than "industral design" because it is an engineering but I'd like to know your opinion on that. Also, in my college there's the oportunity to take Industrial design engineering at the same time as mechanical engineering. Do you see it worth it? (since the first one is already an engineering)

I'm an industrial designer and in my full time job I do rendering and drafting in the civil engineering/manufacturing space, without the design aspect. I started out as an automotive designer and I still do automotive things on the side. But once you have the skills, you will find a tonne of work out there in many different fields.
Super helpful currently going into my 2nd year of ID and still stress about this question... mainly because I don’t know any industrial designers in the real world to give that info
Those that stress about this question, use it as motivation to be at the top of your class.

I never saw industrial design as just a job like any other one. I think you need to be really pationated or you will not succede. You also need a good artistic background. This view may vary between countries, design schools and also design fields. But if you don't have a good sense of aesthetics and proportions it will be a bit tough. I was never much interested in fashion, but nowadays classic industrial design has lots of similarities if you think about trends and fast paced consumism.
I happen to get into watch design which is ironically quite fashion-like and honestly I would never have expected. Maybe it's also a universe all by its own. I miss alot the analytical part of problem solving and the researching. You could say that it is a quite narrow field, but in the end, like in many fields, between these boundaries a whole universe of possibilities opens up.
I think the most important thing is to keep an open mind and try to always learn something new. Things evolve so fast nowadays.. New software and now also AI tools are changing the design landscape very fast.
So to come back to my initial thought: if you have some artistic, but also problem solving analytical skills and you are pationated about design and creating always new things (and not just think design is cool or the title "industrial designer" sounds kinda cool and sofisticated) you can have a great career!
And even if you see things don't seem to fit, with the right attitude you may "slide" into the right direction, into something that really fits you interest and skill set.

Struggling to find any jobs without 3-5 years ( or more ) of industry experience for " an entry level position" Because of Covid-19, so many lower experience level jobs are off the market, what would you suggest todo in the mean time?

Hi Jimmy! Thank you for this video. I just graduated with a bachelor's in nutritional biochemistry/pre-med track this May, and while applying to medical school, I decided that I really didn't want it. Throughout my undergraduate career, the classes and projects that I looked forward to were always related to creativity, problem-solving, sustainability, art, etc. And I grew up drawing, so I know it's something I love/am pretty good at. I had always been interested in textiles (like creating sustainable materials), and looking into that field led me to industrial design. To be honest, I've struggled a lot with finding a field that I am truly excited by, and industrial design seems to encompass all of my interests that I am willing to go back to school for it. This leads me to a few questions: 1. Do you think it's reasonable to pursue this? Am I taking too much of a risk? If I go into this field should I try to do a bachelor's or go for a master's despite my lack of experience? 2. I'm still interested in textiles... would it be feasible to take some textile courses while getting my industrial design degree? Sorry for the long ass comment, but I'd love to hear your thoughts if you have the time. Thanks :)

Hey, I just wanted some tips from you and other designers here. I'm a mechanical engineer working as a manufacturing engineer and have always dreamt of becoming an industrial designer. I am literally always thinking of new designs, ideas, and products, etc and feel like industrial/product/architectural designing is exactly what I want to do. My CAD and sketching skills are ok, I mean I do sometimes have a hard time sketching 3D since I don't practice much and was taught CATIA in school (and am familiar with other cad software as well) I wanna improve on these skills so I can truly bring my ideas to life and have something to show to future employers when looking for a job. Now I just wanna have an idea of what I should do next, I have been planning on maybe doing a graduate or master's program in ID since I already have an ME degree but will it be worth it.? Secondly I do have some time on my hand as of now since I moved to a new city for work and can spend my time at home practicing and taking online courses, so any suggestions on online courses that are truly beneficial for beginners would also be appreciated ...thnx

Just my point of view:
I graduated in industrial design in 2006 and... ....well, is already 15 years that i`m in the visual FX for movies and commercials...
I`m CG supervisor in one of the major firm in visual FX industry
I still passionate about design and i'm pretty good in 3D printing
...from time to time i also get some freelance gig in consumer electronic but my career took a very different path.

Now my question is: Would you say for industrial design or any of its ramifications you need a degree to get work? I know mostly the answer will be NO, and I also know for art its most definetly NO because they give importance to the portfolio (im mostly into game art and that stuff), but i wanted to know what do you think, because as i dont get to do much of what i want or even learn about it in this career, im thinking about dropping off. Good video, but I wanna clarify that car design IS Industrial Design. I know this because I studied at Art Center College of Design, Academy of Art University and Concept Design Academy (Pasadena, CA), major being transportation design within the industrial design department. So what i wanted to ask is,
Is product designing the same as industrial designing. I ask this because i could only find a product designing course in my country, its srilanka by the way.
So the name of the course that i found is
"BA (Hons) 3D Product Design"
The thing is i like the more tangible and physical designing that you mentioned earlier.
And this course that i mentioned is very very expensive, more expensive than buying a car.
And obviously i don't have that kind of money,
So are there online ways i could learn.
So any advice you could give, that would be awesome.

Hahah! Unfortunately Solidworks is not free. Its actually quite expensive. How it worked for me was when I attend school, I had access to it via student version and the computer lab. Once I graduated, my job provided it for me. I just checked and there seems to be a free trial of it if you want to give it a shot. Check their main site.
If you want to at least get some experience in 3D modeling Fusion 360 is free and a decent alternative to SolidWorks. Hope that helps and good luck in your studies!
Ask your school if they have a license or to get one. I went to 2 schools that offered licenses, one for free, the other for 10€/year. It's worth it because it's a very complete tool for design, engineering and manufacturing.

IM STRUGGLINGG I'm was an art student who got accepted to ccs with 100k scholarship but I chose to become a nurse because at that time I was planning to major in animation, and they earn too little compared to what they do, but now I found this career called industrial design. Nice video ! I Finished industrial design almost a year back and now I'm working as a video editor. In India it's really hard to land industrial design jobs right now... The design college you go to matters a lot apparently ! Also studios are always on the look out for interns rather than employees... Is it a good idea to do an internship even after graduating? 😬
I hate the "we only take nidians and IITians" policy of Indian studios. I always wish them luck for finding "real talent".

Spot on, the downside of Industrial design is the career caps out at Senior Industrial Designer. I know many ID that get stuck there for 15 yrs with no upward movement because its rare a company needs someone to manage an ID team. If they do manage to get a coveted Management position often when they leave they downgrade back to Sr ID.
