    Aluminium plant is a great fit for this setup! Have you thought about adding a cleanup crew? no need for slaters in there but a few springtails would remove any mould before it becomes visible. Thank you for this update, I love this paludarium!

    I made one like this, based in the first video. I’m 2 weeks in and so far so good. But, I only ‘turn on the rain’ for an hour or so each day - seems like it would stay too wet otherwise. Holes for aeration were a great addition in this video!

      is the pump loud?

    • @nathanmillard
      @nathanmillard ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@Covid-me1xf I used a USB pump, similar to the one in the video. It is not loud. The sound of dripping water drowns out the sound of the pump completely.
      But, my terrarium isn’t doing great. It’s staying too wet and the moss and other plants are suffering. I should have made a better false bottom so the water drains through faster and used a faster draining soul mix. Anyway, a fun project and will probably have another attempt in the future. I think a small area of a bigger terrarium with this feature would be easier. E.g. rain falling into a ‘pond’ that is fully separated from the rest of the build.

    So glad to see it's doing well. I expected rotting due to the high moisture, and possibly a leak but this looks like it held up great!

    • @Nitidus
      @Nitidus ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's why choice of materials is so important. And maintenance, of course - removing dead plant matter especially. I think it would be even easier to make it bigger and add some springtails and some centipedes that can deal with the moisture to get a natural composting cycle going. You already have denitrifying bacteria in the clay balls to convert the poo into nitrates which subsequently fertilizes the water again so it doesn't lose all the nutrients as fast, encouraging plant growth. Honestly, if you just put some fertilizer into the water every week, you probably wouldn't even have to change water at all. Of course use distilled or reverse osmosis water in the first place and this could be pretty easy to maintain. Provided it's large enough to support a stable, subsistent miniature eco system, of course.

    Could you show us how you light the set-up? I assume it's a very low watt LED hanging over the set-up?
    At the end of the 49 days some of the moss /ferns looked a bit tired/pos. hungry from not having enough nutrience in the water? Do you use rain-/ or RO water for these set-ups? Do you provide any addition "food" like a weak algea solution or anything (poss. applyed by external spraybottle once every 1-2 weeks)?

      Bonjour ,
      Nouveau sur le site , venant de l'aquariophilie , je voudrais apporter une précision sur le charbon
      Charbon actif (à partir d'os) ou le charbon domestique (vegetal) , il est bien connu que le charbon est excellent en effet (desodorisant , aseptisant , clarifiant , absorbant les métaux lourds , etc....) , mais si il est utilisé trop longtemps , il "relargue" les éléments qu'il a filtré !
      Notre intérêt est donc de pouvoir le remplacer environ tous les mois pour en tirer les profits , sans les désagréments !
      L'inclure dans le sol et le laisser en place me paraît donc une mauvaise idée !
      Sauf si vous avez une cascade et une place pour sortir la pompe pour entretiens , auquel cas , vous pouvez en mettre dans un filet , autour du tuyau de remonté d'eau ! En remontant la pompe , vous pourrez changer le charbon ....
      Qu'en pensez vous , n'avez vous jamais eu de problèmes sur le long terme ?
      Peut être que les plantes sont moins sensibles que les poissons ? (Qui peuvent en mourir , les crevettes y étant encore plus sensibles !!! )
      Peut être ne sert il plus à rien une fois qu'il a accumulé .... puis relargué ... devenant inerte ?
      En tous cas , je suis un peu étonné de son utilisation sous le sol !!!
      Merci de vos expérience ... 😉😎

    Make another one - much taller - hide the drip tray behind wider wood slats, and use smaller holes for smaller drops of water.. also, your ‘holes for aeration’ seem to be capped by the lid to the drip tray, their chimneys need to be higher and cutout through the lid.
    It’s beautiful, by the way, my nasty mouth notwithstanding. I do however think it could be improved by being taller, the drops being smaller, and the drip mechanism and light hidden behind a larger mask of wood. Also, someone mentioned sprintails! Good idea. What about making the drip lid itself from a 2-way mirror, so that light from above passes through, but looking up from below with the light off would just show a reflection of the tank below.
    And lastly, it just came to mind after reading so many comments about it being too wet - I’ve an idea that might be of use. Separate the mud on the walls from the water reservoir - let the only water it receives be from the rain. Then you can turn it on when the soil starts getting dry, like a normal houseplant, sort of - i mean, at least you get to decide - IF the soil is kept seperate from the reservoir in the rocks.

      I think this setup might be too wet for most orchids, which would rot (as I know from my own experiments - and it gets expensive!), although maybe some of the cloud forest species might work. Restrepias could do well, or perhaps you could add a branch or vine for other species so the roots get a chance to dry a little. One of the mini vandas might work, branch mounted, and I've found Haraella retrocalla and Leptotes bicolor and unicolor all do well mounted in my intermediate terrarium (watered every morning), as does Dracula mopsus which I never allow to get dry. You will need to include a fan because all orchids need good air circulation, and it could be tricky to fit one into in this setup so you would need to adapt it somehow and a fan inside wouldn't last long - even the more expensive "waterproof" ones I've tried lasted no longer than a standard pc fan. Good luck.

      Thank you so much!
      I don't keep the pump on for more than 6 hours a day. You can use pink fittonias or diastema affine, these are great colourful terrarium plants, but I'm not 100% sure that it'll be suitable for such setups.

      @@langdiy @axzeralzane9799 Buchephelandra should be extremely well suited for this setup! Anubias will do great too, but they are not colorful. nana petite and other small leaved variants wont outgrow a wet terrarium though and you can have them under running water 24/7. Lots of aquariumplants that have an emerse growth will do fine!

    • @Xc31
      @Xc31 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tried to tagg you but it didnt seem to work. Have a look at buchephelandra! they're sold as aquariumplants but naturally grow in and on the sides of jungle streams and would do very well in a setup like this. they do fine under running water 24/7, as do a lot of other plants sold for aquariums. Have a look at aquariumplants that are grown emerse, all of them should be suitable.

    Is there a small critter that could be added to tank that could eat the fallen leaves? Might help reduce the frequency that maintenance is required beyond trims.

    Thank you for sharing how to set up this beautiful terrarium! Do you usually have a plant light above the terrarium? Also can you provide the ratios of the soil + peat moss on the walls? How often do you run the rain? Thank you!

    If i may suggest dwarf species that are usually aquarium plants buce, java fern, anubias, dwarf saggiteria, aquatic mosses. A filmy fern could work as well not sure on mature size though. A mini fan will get you better bang for your buck on ventilation but nay draw in mold spores. Springtails would enjoy this environment as they often live in fishtanks at the surface. You probably already have them in there anyway.

    Do you have clay in wall soil mix to make it stick firmly? How do you stop it eroding away from the dripping rain?

    • @langdiy
      @langdiy  ปีที่แล้ว

      No clay in soil mix. Water dripping from the drip tray doesn't fall directly on the soil mix.
