I was in the RAOC stores section in support of 73 (Sphinx) Loc Bty which were part of 94 Loc Regt, they were put in to suspended animation , 73 Bty moved to 5 Regt RA. Decent posting in Larkhill and 5 Bty AMF(L) were also there, the winter/arctic warfare element of RA.
Really interesting talk - remember hearing about Special OP’s or ‘stsy behind OP’s’ as otherwise known whilst serving as a Gunner in 39 Regt RA in BAOR. Think they were based at 5 Heavy Regt in Dortmund and came to our camp to do a recruitment display. Looking back I wish I’d have given it a shot, sounds like a good crack.
The 4 came from 4 (Sphinx) Battery Royal Artillery and was part od 47 Fld Regt RA when 47 chnaged to Air Defence the batteries where suspended and the names placed with others such as 3Fld Bry became part of 3/20 Battery whichwas part of 26 Regt RA.

Hi Mate, Yep i know the tour and the kit you were using pal... same tour... Ex-53 Bty.... Maj D is a top bloke (you know who i mean) The Canada thing is the same across the military ... loads of promises that are then retracted. Keep well bro
On Herrick 7, Sep 07 to May 08.. My Battalion 2YORKS(Green Howards) were the OMLT partnered with the ANA, but our recce and sniper platoons merged and joined 4/73 to become the Brigade Reconnaissance Force(BRF) which is like a knock off version of the Pathfinder platoon, hence why the cream of the crop of Battalion and 4/73 made it up for the Brigade, and 4/73 made an excellent impression on us infantry lads, and 3 of us applied to do selection after that tour, 2 Lance Jack's who both failed the hills, and I waited until after Herrick 11 to apply because like this bloke, I was less about a career going through the ranks and more about the job and doing it for real.. So I waited until after H11 when we were told that after 3 tours of Afghanistan, 2 of which were very naughty tours in Helmand that we weren't going again, 1YORKS and 3YORKS were doing the next ones and we were going to Cyprus for 2 years, which is when I applied, even tho I'd been in a while and knew 4/73 got the micky took out of them by Pathfinders and SF and even ordinary Marines and Paras and considered as glorified Artillery, I still remained impressed by them, but I was only going on selection to escape Cyprus and to do more tours, the wrong reasons really, and I could never have done away with my infantry cap badge, so I was really the wrong candidate at this time.. And my platoon commander kicked me off the course refusing to endorse my application because I beat someone up on morning PT and called me childish, they probably had a very lucky escape from me because I was a good soldier and very fit, I can say with confidence that I could have passed well, my CSM was ex 22 and used to encourage me to try for 22 instead when I calmed down, but I'd set my sites on 4/73.. I did try and apply again in 2015 but I was 30 then so more mature and contacted 4/73 directly for training information and a place on the insite course but the WO on the phone was very rude, refusing to give me any info which isn't what I expected from an elite unit, and I was too old to deal with such nonsense! So I never took it further and did P company instead, which got me nowhere to be honest.. Shame really, I'll always wonder what if I hadn't been a plank.
Arty ran away from the guns, white lanyard. Only Artillery regiments that don't wear a white lanyard and have a different cap badge and belt are RHA, because they stayed. Engineers took over gun positions when certain positions Artillery bogged out.
@@gavinhalliday8613 what a load of shit learn your history they did not run away from the guns they were overrun 80% of the battery were killed. Nobody run away from the guns because 80% of the battery was killed. There was nobody to retake the guns other than when the Royal engineers turned up and did not fire a shot in anger. You make out as the artillery run away. The engineers came to the rescue and carried on the fight. The battle is over. the white lanyard has nothing to do with cowardice We wore a white lanyard years before that along with a white stable belt know your history before you start talking shit
The cap badge is Royal Artillery the Battery are a part of 5 Regiment Royal Artillery based at Marne Barracks Nr Catterck. My last posting a great Regiment.
Learn to respect your old cap badge. More men than you can ever imagine have died wearing it. Stop being like a little child. You're disrepect to it is shocking.

What's with the Arty slating? I know some 5 reg guys and they're pretty solid. Never looked at their capbadge and thought "ah, fucking plank."
Yes not sure what thats about I was in 29 commando RA proud to wear my Arty Badge on my green lid

9 year Lance Jack! Did you upset someone?
You get promoted after passing
Great interview! Take umbridge about being geeky and signals, I was in the Royal Signals (HF Radio Op).
Interesting how role has developed more recently
Wicked podcast
Thanks 👍
It's a different cap badge now,it's a guards cap badge,
What have you been smoking?
The Guards Para Coy had a variety of cap badges, even REME, RAMC, Pay Corps and Catering Corps. A great Unit !
Stop using mate.

Loved every minute in 4/73
4/73 do not get SF pay. They are on band 3.
i dont understand why an arty unit is patrolling etc, that just hasnt been explained.
The skill set is perfectly suited for a deep recce role.
The battery is basically a more elite FST job role. FSTs are attached to infantry and armoured units all the time so it only makes sense
was 73 Bty pre Sneaky Beaky, Sadly the Artillery are repurposing Battery Titles .
