You got this one completely wrong. Just goes to show what happens when someone who didn't actually watch the older movies when they first released tries to rate it by today's movie standards. The original movie kicked so much ass and Jolie was a perfect Lara Croft. The mansion action scene still holds up today as well. They were mimicking the games, of course they're going to focus on her chest! It's what every kid did in the 90s!
The 2001 Tomb Raider was the better movie and was true to the video games stories. He doesn't seem to be a true tomb fan. Also he dislike both movies there are no winners.
I just watched both these movies over the weekend and, while I definitely enjoyed the reboot FAR more than I was expecting (it was my first time watching it), I also found the twist to be quite dull and lacking in any of the intended shock value. I like the reboot and I'm looking forward to the sequel, but in a perfect world they'd have made a third Lara Croft movie with Angelina Jolie. I say all this as someone who has never played the games, mind.

2001 TR was confident and bold in its approach, making the characters memorable. It also had quite nice cinematography on top of that. It wasn't aiming to take itself so seriously, only to be fun and with that fun pay its homage to a very popular video game. It was an action fantasy sci-fi plot, and knowing this, it made a clear decision to use that fact to its full potential. 2018 TR was watered down with horrible pacing, bland cinematography, and disappointing writing that couldn't make up its mind what it wanted to do. It's just another product of this era's gender/cultural appropriation issues that make writers too afraid to have any balls and take a film in any kind of memorable direction. The action didn't resemble what I remember being in the games nearly as much as the 2001 film, and the sudden jump from being inexperienced and ignorant to being a super badass hero is impossible to ignore or dismiss. It just doesn't have the clear, fun visionary drive that Jolie's version had, and I think in the end, that is what creates the largest impact on the likeability of a film of this kind. This is why so many people say the 2001 is a guilty pleasure, because it makes up in knowing what it is and really owning it, for what it decided to go without, for the sake of this very reason. Sorry, but 2001 TR is far better because of this, to me.
I liked the 2001 tomb raider for one Angelina played Lara perfectly and she was beautiful back then. Alicia on the other hand is not that as beautiful and looks nothing like Lara.

This video seemed very conflicted. It seemed both pro and anti feminist at the same time. You complain about the sexualised nature of Lara in the 2001 version, yet also complain that the newer version isn’t weak enough. The reboot game Lara wasn’t done well. She was too much of a crybaby in one sense, but overpowered and overconfident in another. She goes from apologizing to animals to saying stuff like “I’m coming for you all” while slaughtering loads of heavily armed bad guys. I think the recent film version has the best Lara. She combines traits of the classic Lara with those of the new. She definitely showed signs of vulnerability and showed emotion after she killed that first mercenary. Vikander played the role very well. I liked that she bulked up as well, and looks strong enough to do a lot of what she does.
My favourite versus video is Aquaman VS Black Panther. My critiques and music selection for that video was incorporated perfectly. And I usually don't consider my videos perfect. But that's the one I am the MOST proud of.
That would probably be my Justice League VS The Avengers video. I'm happy with the production of the video. But my opinions on Justice League have changed considerably since I made the video.
UndeadSlayer5 I will add it to the list if versus videos but there are a lot of newer movies coming out that I need to cover first. Including Deadpool 2.
What I hated the most on the reboot film... It's that it's not truly a *supernatural* but rather a *science fiction* movie... It just happens to be a zombie movie in disguise in the end! Instead of the tomb being a mystical queen wielding unbelievable powers, it's just a dead body containing a zombifying virus and the entire temple was a quarantine zone all the time!
I do not care about Science Fiction/Suoernatural. But that they decided to make it about zombies in the end was a big letdown. In times of Walkinf Dead, Fear The Walkind dead etc. using Zombies is just a lame plot.
I thought the new one was decent enough. Did it's job, but nothing I'd go out of my way to watch again. Also, something I picked up when watching it, the plot twist at the end with the treasure is very similar to the first Uncharted, not sure whether that was intentional or not. Great video mate :)
The new one was just average to me. It could have had the potential to be truly special but it didn't care to be more than a cashgrab to rain in the female empowerment demographic. Thanks for watching and commenting buddy!
A little bit of a gripe with your beginning narrative. A movie being PG-13 isn't a kids movie per se. There are still some rather dark and mature themes and elements in them, such as language, violence, intense action, etc. Sure, it can't reach the same heights as an R-rated movie in terms of mature content, but that doesn't automatically mean it's for little kids because of that.
They could have made tomb raider 2018 a 2 part film adding more story to himeko making Mathias an actual leader of a cult and actually adding all her friends and not actually having the father be alive to make more story similar to the original since the games plot relied on Lara’s father and her walking in his footsteps
As someone who is isn't cautious of the term feminist, and is saddened by how it has been used as a dirty word in some cirlcles, I often wonder what does more damage those who misuse and twist the point for their own purpose, or the observers or critics who perpetuate these false misconceptions and give the extreme and misguided validation, therfore overshadowing the reasonable majority. Just a thought that rolls through the mind every now and again. Thanks for th video!
I haven't played it yet. After it was made an Exclusive for the Xbox One and Crystal Dynamics released that nonsensical statement saying that in doing this they will get even MORE people to experience the game. I was really put off. I don't want to support the company for that and if anything it has really put me off of playing the game.
Thanks for the reply and fair enough. I just had to ask as you seem to like the predecessor as much as I do and I felt the sequel sullied itself quite well when I played it. I put this question to you as I have always wondered "is it just me?" when it comes to its sequel, but you haven't played it as of yet, so fair enough. Have a good one Eric.
So, for me, I saw the original Lara Croft movie when I was a kid. Then I saw Tomb Raider 2018, when I was homeless. I LOVED 2018 Tomb Raider, it inspired me to be tough when I was in a difficult situation. I didn't really have any experience with the games to compare it to. But it got me really interested in Lara Croft. Now, playing Tomb Raider Anniversary on the X-Box (which is both amazing and infuriating), I have to say that the aesthetic of this classic version of Lara Croft is more appealing to me. However, getting to know Lara as a character, her backstory, as depicted in the 2018 film, really makes me love the character. I live with 2 preteen girls who love watching me play Tomb Raider on the Xbox, and soon I'm going to order the 2018 Blu-ray for us to watch. I know that their mom would like the new one, but the sexualization of Angelina Jolees version would probably make her uncomfortable. So, it's all about perspective I guess. They both offer different things to different audiences.
So 2018's Tomb Raider's Laura didn't go on this expedition in search of her father? I didn't see the movie, but I thinking she went b/c she believed her father was alive.
"she becomes a skilled marksman overnight" ... except she was training in archery since she was a child, which is shown in flashbacks. And personally I think her adapting to the conflict that's thrown at her is pretty realistic. She spends the entire movie once the ship starts to go down in survival mode. Just thrown into crisis after crisis, with no choice but to accept immediate death, or use her skills to their maximum capacity in order to save herself and those around her. I don't think she becomes a hero right away- i definitely saw her become more confident in herself with every dangerous situation.. and i saw a lot of fear and vulnerability... but then something else would happen, or her instincts kicked in where she didn't have time to stop and freak out. She had to keep going. Until she was with her father in the cave... then she let him care for her. And her moments of defeat and vulnerability like when she found the beach.. or when she killed a man in the water.. they all led up to her being completely worn out and collapsing when she saw her father. I saw a lot of small acting choices Alicia made throughout the movie that showed Lara's fear or sense of radical acceptance or defeat.. and she would have someone else push her further, or some kind of disaster push her past those moments. That's how real life is sometimes and i found it very relatable to only get brief moments of true emotion- only to be thrust into the next crisis. I wish she had cried when she saw her fathers tape but that's about the only time she didn't seem to react emotionally. even when she got the key in the puzzle, we saw her disbelief and shock... and she immediately went into a hyper focused problem solving mode to cope with it- which could explain the deadpan when she saw the tape. she was in "what do i do now" mode.. in shock. dissociated from the reality of her father having left something for her. it's not her being brave in a feminist movie- it's her reacting to something in a different way. not reacting- or better said, numbing out is also reacting. when she kicks the ladder, or realizes himiko was a carrier, or sees her father is going to die, or watches the first worker man get shot, or kills someone herself, or is told to open the door- she shows emotions. very realistic emotions. she's not hysterical or crying - but she's emotional. it's just subtle and realistic to what i've seen real people do in times of grief or sacrifice or betrayal or shock. I think this movie is highly misunderstood and Alicias portrayal is brushed over.
Finally... Someone who saw what I saw... Emotions are so vast .. so to say only breaking down or crying shows that you feel something is WAY off. Granted it's not an amazing movie but definitely worth a watch with the family .. something for the adults and kids to enjoy. P.s.. very refreshing comment x
Hey thanks for the video! It was edited well and the music complimented your commentary well! I do have some thoughts I’d like to share with you as someone who has never watched your videos! I want to respectfully disagree with your analysis. It felt very weighted toward your own bias for the video game franchise, which made your responses toward each movie predictable. As a fan of video games, I can understand having high hopes for a movie adaptation of a franchise. With that in mind, your review came off as negative and somewhat entitled from your end. Pandering to classic “SJW’s” has ruined many a movie, but I didn’t get any of those vibes from the 2018 movie. It made it a little frustrating to hear you rant against the movie when ultimately, I (as a viewer) didn’t feel like the portrayal warranted such a harsh critique. I would suggest dialing it back a little, perhaps trying to find evidence that Lara did show emotion and present it in the video so that viewers who disagree with your viewpoint aren’t alienated. Good work, I know TH-cam can be a hard business, and I hope that my comments shed some light on the experience of a new viewer who doesn’t agree with this video. Best wishes.
Thank you very much for your constructive comment Alan! I really appreciate it! I agree. This was one of my older videos so I do look back at it and see a lot of problems. But I have made a constant effort to improve on my work. And the versus videos I make now are not riddled with as much flaws as some of my earlier versus videos are. Thanks so much for watching and commenting buddy! And thanks again for the constructive criticism!
2001 tomb raider was a Tomboys dream. Roygh tough, yet still sexy. Not expected to be a lady. The new one has a softness to her that honestly seems to take away from her strength. It slightly weak. She comes across as weak.
That's LARA, NOT Laura, what ever anyone says, the latest version is the most believable., also when your telling an origin story, you CAN'T convincingly show the title character being perfect & always knowing what to do, you need mistakes (although believable one's admittedly)she is learning as she goes, I didnt think her "stupid" although she did lack charisma at times, I also didnt think she was unemotional in any way that lessened the film, I only thought of this as "a stand alone film" and not a comparison with a video game, as for the pacing it was good, getting into high gear on the Island, although I liked the bike chase across bustling London earlier. There was in fact life BEFORE INDIANA JONES most people don't seem to realise, in film's such as- KING SOLOMAN'S MINES, SHE, and others
2018 has better story??? It was brainless! Not to mention a total ripoff of everything the first one did. Lara working with the bad guys, catching things onehanded while climbing, wrap around bicep, fist fight with main villain at the end, I could go on.
Sorry, man... but I am NOT excited for your Ghostbusters video. Why? Because I'm worried that you'll repeat the exact same reasons why the 2016 film sucks the backlash already crammed down my throat. Now, I'm not saying those reasons aren't valid (and you have the right to not like the film), but the backlash got so out of control and so inescapable that I find it harder to watch these negative reviews because the hatred has already been shoved in my face so much that I'm sick of it! I consider Ghostbusters 2016 one of the most overhated films of all time because of this. Thanks to all the people who kept screaming "This movie is god-awful!" on every video related to Ghostbusters 2016 over and over, I thought the actual movie was... just okay. 5/10. No more, no less. But, I think you're going to go on a huge rant and declare it the worst movie of all time. That's all fine, and I'm not shaming you for your opinion, I've just had that opinion shoved in my face so much that I am DONE with it. Because of this backlash, I can't hate the film as much as you will because everyone else has already done that. I don't intend to come off as a jerk here, I'm just stating how I feel. So, when your Ghostbusters video comes out, I'm sorry but I'm skipping it.
Dude you do know all girls don’t cry all the time? Damn, it’s not a “strong female character” not showing emotion, it’s just a person not showing emotion. Personally I like that in an action movie, less snot and tears more you know, action. This is v weird approach to a review. I want more tears! More catharsis! Let me so a women cry!
Upon re-watching this video I do think that I exaggerated my point. I do think that she needed to have more emotions during these scenes (weather that be crying or just making faces) but it is not as bad as I remembered it to be. Thanks for watching Katherine! Take care and stay safe!
Eric Carter oh wow, you replied. Lol. Sorry I shouldn’t have been so harsh. I kind of imagined my comment dying among the masses (which is stupid). I get frustrated because movies with female protagonists seem to be held up 2 this weird standard, even in like dumb action movies. I actually avoid watching reviews of “girl movies” because of it, but that’s not on you, and I do enjoy your content. Hope your channel does well, you seem pleasant :)

Why do you wrote ‘Laura’? Was that a joke?
The clothing,the clothing,the...CLOTHING!!!!!!!
Hey Eric have you played the Batman Arkham games? And if so what did you think about them?
Eric what is your favorite VS video u made just wondering
My favourite versus video is Aquaman VS Black Panther. My critiques and music selection for that video was incorporated perfectly. And I usually don't consider my videos perfect. But that's the one I am the MOST proud of.
Eric Carter ok then what is your least favorite VS video u made
That would probably be my Justice League VS The Avengers video. I'm happy with the production of the video. But my opinions on Justice League have changed considerably since I made the video.
Eric Carter ok!
2001 is more like the ps1 games while new version more like the ps3 and 4 reboot to make her into a survivalist
Can u please do The Karate Kid vs The Karate Kid (2010) since the sequel Cobra Kai came out today?
UndeadSlayer5 I will add it to the list if versus videos but there are a lot of newer movies coming out that I need to cover first. Including Deadpool 2.
Sure oh ya deadpool almost forgot about that one Im guessing u didnt like that either?
UndeadSlayer5 I really liked the first Deadpool movie. I'll be comparing it to the sequel when that comes out.
Oh ok thats good
Jolie the best
Well the irony is Uncharted was inspired by Tomb Raider, but, when kristal dinamics made the reboot of the series, they were inspired by Uncharted.
Love you Eric!!
When I think about it remind me of X-Men Wolverine Origins the way the Laura is starting out is similar to Logan.
They could have made tomb raider 2018 a 2 part film adding more story to himeko making Mathias an actual leader of a cult and actually adding all her friends and not actually having the father be alive to make more story similar to the original since the games plot relied on Lara’s father and her walking in his footsteps
Live action trailer of the latest game pretty much....
Angelina is the best!
LA-RA, not Laura. It's on the movie covers you keep showing, and you even spelled it wrong in your own title screens...
I thought the two old Tomb Raider movies were crap even back then.
I loved Jolie's too
What you think about the sequel to the Tomb Raider game you mentioned in this video?
2018 has one massive mistake-terrible attempts to hide her plot armor
2001 had a Smeghead for the butler
Lara Croft is the female version of Indiana Jones, if you know the history of Lara croft you would know that.
Had no idea they made a movie out of the tomb raider reboot game from 2013
Disagree with the video but you get a thumbs up for the Scream 3 clip. I fucking love Scream.
So do I. :) Its one of my favourite horror franchises. Thanks for watching and giving the video a thumbs up buddy!
Great video Eric. I have another idea for your versus video. A Wrinkle In Time (2003) vs (2018).
Honestly the 2001 is one of my favorites. Not for the reasons you think tho..😂
So 2018's Tomb Raider's Laura didn't go on this expedition in search of her father? I didn't see the movie, but I thinking she went b/c she believed her father was alive.
Tomb raider is a very good movie you can't enjoy movies when you critizies every scene
SPOILER :
she was right though, her father was still alive
Laura? It's Lara!!!
New video from Eric It’s my lucky day
To me the old lara is better because the new one is just like any thing with a woman these days SJW propaganda
Exactly!!
Tomb Raider 2001 the best
Extra points for referencing Showdown
I like the 2018 reboot and the modern games
Eric on 12PM The Birds of Prey trailer drops
Hollywood tends to water things down quite a bit
Um... no Expendables 3 was the worst.
Replacement actress failure fr smhh media ruined it forever
I LOVE THEM BOTH. Don't compare them pls.
Lara --Lahr-uh. There is no U. If it was meant to be Laura, it would have been spelled, "Laura". Gah.
That's LARA, NOT Laura,
what ever anyone says, the latest version is the most believable., also when your telling an origin story, you CAN'T convincingly show the title character being perfect & always knowing what to do, you need mistakes (although believable one's admittedly)she is learning as she goes, I didnt think her "stupid" although she did lack charisma at times, I also didnt think she was unemotional in any way that lessened the film,
I only thought of this as "a stand alone film" and not a comparison with a video game, as for the pacing it was good, getting into high gear on the Island, although I liked the bike chase across bustling London earlier.
It's 'Lara Croft' not 'Laura Croft'.
Lol I know. That was a mistake I made. Ever since I was a kid I always thought it was Laura. XD
Eric Carter
At least you didn’t think that Dora the explorer was pronounced doora the explorer like I did.
Lol. Did you? That's interesting. The reason I always called her Dora was because she would repeatedly say her name over and over again.
Why she is an explorer. I mean, she always use a map! Like WTF?
I’m sorry but I love the 2018 tome rader
Wait. Which tomb raider game? Are u comparing to
There's like 50 old games and 50 new ones man. Specifics specifics.
@@starlord9664 2013 one
Dude it's Lara not Laura
