When searching my mind for video ideas, my unimaginative imagination always focuses on the Mario games first for inspiration. I might as well give in this one time and get it out of my system.
Ever since his debut in Super Mario Bros. all the way back in 1985, Bowser has proven to be the most persistent villain in gaming history. The guy has become almost as well-known as his eternal nemesis at this point.
But the battles against him in the original two NES games were frankly downright bizarre. In this episode of Boss Analysis, I cover each of every one of the Bowser fights in the Lost Levels... - เกม

The worst part is that if you've played NSMB on the DS you probably know what comes next. Shit's still engrained on my mind on that 1-Castle level.

@snailwithinternetaccess at the end of world 1's castle, you see him actually burning away in the lava (turning into dry bowser) right before moving to world 2.
Sure he comes back later, but if you're a kid managing to get to that bossfight and seeing Bowser actually struggling on the lava (which the games didn't do and never continued after NSMB 1) when he often shrugged off things in previous titles is quite the shakeup and shocker.
4-4. That one is a Spiny. Perhaps the game cannot have a spiny loaded unless a Lakitu is loaded simultaneously, and that extra hurtbox is where the devs hid the Lakitu?
According to the manual, the first "real" Bowsers in 8-4, 9-3 and D-4 are Bowser's brother. He is colored blue in the famicom version.
It's so bizarre that they didn't keep that consistent in the All Stars version. I can't imagine a recolor would have been that hard to code in.

Blue Bowser is referenced in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, being his 8th alt. There's even a tip that calls it 'False Bowser' I believe.
RedCherry Goggles Or it could be a reference to Dark Bowser, although it has been stated that the blue color is for Fake Bowser. So this comment is useless but I wanted to post this because someone would have eventually.
@@anenigma8378 I don't know if the tip is in Ultimate but it was in the Wii U version according to the wiki I read on Bowser's Brother.
Fun fact about 9-1, 9-2, and 9-3: they're actually based on the minus level glitch from the first game. That's why there's a disturbing lack of enemies.
What makes matters more interesting is that World -1 was also The Underwhere in Super Paper Mario. Let that sink in.

13:29 If anyone wants a reason as to why that happens, in a nutshell, because bowser throws so many hammers and there being too many active hitboxes (bowser,lava bubbles, fire breath, other hammers) some hammers themselves don't have hit boxes so you can jump past them. Its a common trick in speed running!
maybe eliminating the hitboxes of some hammers was done to prevent slowdown?

This gets uploaded the same day I learned Bowser had a brother colored blue in the Family Computer Disk System, appearing in world 8-4 and 9-3, he has full hammer and fire breath, but the lost levels recolored him green again
I wonder if Bowser's blue recoloring in Superstar Saga as Rookie is an Easter egg or reference to this?
I think the hammer and fire breath is a reference to mythology from the Far East but please inform me of what the resemblance to a mythological creature from Asia in the description of this comment.

Fun fact: The world 8 first bowser is actually blue in the NES version. He's known as "bowser's brother".
There's also an unused blue palette of Bowser in All-Stars' code, suggesting that Bowser's Brother was to be represented in his original color instead of being the same sprite as regular Bowser.
Oh, I wanted an analysis interface with Bowser like the ones you do in these videos. I love those.

A good way to tell Bowser is almost defeated is if he sweats (those small white circles over his head when you hit him 4 times).

A lot of people mentioned the Famicom version's blue fake Bowser in the comments, but here's another odd change. In the Famicom version, World D-4's Bowsers are both fake, and they're both Spinies. That's why they don't spew fire.

Y'know, for how good of a compilation Super Mario All-Stars is, the last time we've seen Nintendo directly acknowledge the title was (if I recall right) the 25th Anniversary rerelease on the Wii; Closest we've got elsewhere are the Super Mario Advance titles, and the Mushroom Kingdom II stage from Melee and Ultimate, both indirectly; The latter doesn't even use the All-Stars rendition of the music.

Also that hitbox on 4-4 is extreme w a c k, Devs should've left it below the bridge(Or the wall, since nobody is gonna fireball the wall out of sheer curiosity).

Something else interesting to note is that in the original Famicom version of Lost Levels, the first Bowser you encounter in 8-4 and D-4 has a different color pallet...and is actually a different character altogether, quite literally being Bowser's equivalent to Luigi. Referred to as Blue Bowser by the game's manual, he's apparently Bowser's brother? He's never since appeared in any game whatsoever. I guess he didn't take too kindly to being called "Blue Bowser" of all things...
Maybe it's a reference to Bowser and Blue. I think they were musicians of some kind, so if I'm right then the reference wouldn't suprise me given the naming of the Koopalings in Super Mario Bros. 3.

In 9-3, there's a hole in the ceiling right underneath where the pipe is, and you can jump on top of the ceiling from the left and just run past Bowser cause the screen doesn't lock like 7-4 or C-4 due to there being a flagpole instead of an axe.
Ever analyzed Flash's bosses for Sega Master System? That car thing you know...
Interesting, I've never knew there was more to these battles than what you see in the surface level, it just looked like more or less RNG with some different elements to make things easier or harder, but it's actually surprisingly deeper than it looks like.
Even though it can be tedious when done excessively and it's generally not too great by itself, but there's something exhilarating about a non-pattern based boss in a game like this, as the alternatives in a lot of later Mario games is having a basic pattern that makes the boss essentially "free".
Sure, a pattern based boss is more fair, but the problem is that later Mario games rarely have bosses that provide challenge, which makes the fairness feel like a moot point, as they just feel like beefed-up regular enemies than proper bosses.
Not to say that there are no genuinely fun and challenging Mario bosses, SML2 has some fun bosses that actually require effort to beat, nothing really hard, but at least you have to try.

Yo guys, true story, I was playing Mario Lost Levels in All Stars (on the Wii because I'm poor). I was at world 7-4 at the King Koopa fight, he was throwin' hammers like (pew, pew, pew) and I was getting ready to jump. I took the leap, and he started throwing hammers. Then, a miracle happened. I pressed A at the perfect frequency to land in between the hammers and finish the fight!
Ok, basically it was 13:25, but... sigh...

I came up with an idea in this game. Instead of facing the Bowser which you normally do, you face his stronger counter-part, Dry Bowser. Thought it would be fitting to give him an alternative design after this idea has been done in other games.
5-4 is a mixture of 2-4 and 3-4 because 2 + 3 = 5.

The Bowsers in the levels past World 8 are easier for a good reason. In the original NES cart, you only had one life to get through the extra levels! It makes the Bowsers a little more intimidating when you can’t die once to any of them.
