Just in case you’ve wondered why ABBA had so many actual music videos back in the ‘70s, even the early ‘70s, when other groups didn’t (or at least very rarely): Because of their physical location in Sweden, and because Sweden wasn’t known as a mass producer of popular music on the worldwide stage, it was extremely hard for Swedish groups to get noticed, so they quite literally pioneered the use of music videos as a marketing tool. Obviously, it was long before MTV and long before the artistic, high-budget, polished videos we see now. Some of their videos are very simple, some more intricate, some downright silly - but it’s how they were able to reach out to the world in a way no one else had ever accomplished. It was a novel way they could export their look and sound to countries around the world, far from the isolation of Sweden, and get noticed and grow their brand-and it worked. They really deserve much of the credit for pioneering something that’s taken for granted today!

    "The name of the game"
these is an extraordinary song by ABBA, which has many peculiarities:
    1) I think it's the first in which each of the girls sings a verse as lead voice
    2) the official video was recorded at the blonde Agnetha & blonde Björn's home,
because Agnetha was very late in her second pregnancy
(that's why maybe she's sitting and cared for in the picture)
    3) "The name of the game" was released in October 1977,
two month before "ABBA The Album" and the movie "ABBA The Movie"
It was a bold gamble from ABBA, it opened their horizons and spread beyond pop.
I think that "The name of the game" (1977)
have some vibs of influences of BEATLES songs like "Penny Lane" or "Fool on the hill" (1967)
curiosly, "The name of the game" was #1 in UK (4 weeks)
and replaced in the #1 for "Mull of Kintyre" by Paul McCartney (ex-BEATLES member)
    "The name of the game"
is in my opinion a masterpiece
one of the Seven Wonders of ABBA (in chronological order):
    Waterloo
    S.O.S
    Dancing Queen
    The name of the game
    Chiquitita
    The winner takes it all
    Don't shut me down
You have fantastic songs in "The Album" (1977) to react, ABBA's most versatile album:
    "Eagle" almost 6 minutes amazing
Take a chance on me (the banger hit)
"One man one woman" (beauty ballad)
    "Move on" (fantástic chorus)
"Hole in your soul" (powerful rock)
included a mini musical from 1977 Tour:
"Thank you for the music" (ABBA hymn)
    "I wonder" (dramatic ballad)
    "I'm a marionette" (progresive rock)
I hope to see you soon in more ABBA videos
    A big hug from
    Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷
    South America
PS: at the time of the official video (1977)
the blonde singer Agnetha and the guitarist Björn was married since 1971,
with one child in 1973 and in pregnancy of their second child
(the only official video with Her pregnant)
the brunette singer Frida and the bearded keyboardist Benny was engaged
    and living together since 1969
    and married next year 1978

However, now I am older I can appreciate just how wonderful, multi layered and interesting they were. These days, musicians are praised for changing chord and are mostly talntless and boring but in those days mega talents like Abba were commonplace.

One song from ABBA catalogue I think is a "must check out" is ""Ring, Ring", because it was arguably their first song that had all the ABBA music ingredients intact. With this one they created the concept, that produced all the beloved hits.

Right - and most of us Swedes were shocked by the fact that 'Ring ring' did not win the Swedish song contest in 1973 and got to represent the nation at the Eurovision Song Contest. However, the following year they participated with 'Waterloo' - and the rest is history.

I grew up listening to ABBA and to say im a fan is an understatement!! I loved them before they became popular!! Now its so awesome to see younger people like you and Amber enjoying and being excited about their music. ❤😊

    • @michelemercier2286
      @michelemercier2286 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

It's still a bit surreal sometimes. I sort of liked it when they weren't popular because it made me feel like they were my unique thing and that I didn't go along with the crowd. When friends would dismiss them as a "disco" band I knew that, sure they incorporated elements of disco but that they were so much more and felt a bit sorry for those friends in a "you don't know what you are missing" way. Fast forward to now and not only was I right at the time about how great they were, but they have stood the test of time in the way very few musicians have. As big a fan as I was and am - I didn't really expect that, yet I don't find it surprising. Amber explained it I think when she noted that you can't really assign their music a genre. They incorporated so much with such high production levels that most of it escapes sounding dated.

Their songs are really easy to listen to, but as all the people who have acted and sung them in the hit show; MAMA MIA! will say; those songs, are FAR more difficult to sing, than you realise, until you actually do it. That’s because of the range of octaves required. Once you get some lyrics and then try to sing any of their songs, you all of sudden realise that they are even BETTER than you thought. This is one of the most intricate arrangements and as you both pointed out, there is a little bvit of everything there. ABBA’s genius is that they make it look easy. This is just a video of course, but the fact is that at some stage they actually play and sing exactly what you’re hearing. If you get to see some live footage of them (and there is quite a bit out there) you can see that they hardly ever seem to be under any kind of stress vocally.

Again, the combination of Agnetha and Frida has been famously described as the third voice. Of course Benny and Bjorn’s contributions can’t go without recognition- they are geniuses.

The game they play in this video is Ludo, you 'll find details in wikipedia. It had many variations or brands (game of little horses in France for example). Very popular in europe by the 70ies.
Love ABBA, listened a lot as a kid, it wasn't rock and roll, but it was sometimes so better !
The songs are still magic today, they feel like an old transmission from a eerie, romantic, happy (and sometimes sad), cool era.
I have a "Feelgood playlist" on Dzer where among 50+ more tracks, you can find a bunch of ABBA songs. I will add this one, thank you to bring it back into the light.
