On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 12-10-20.
We're looking at a 1955 Ford Thunderbird Convertible in Torch Red Paint. The car comes with the factory 292 CI “Y Block” V8 engine with 198 HP.
The car's Owner is Dennis Roxworthy. Dennis’s had this car since 2000. He shares he knew the person who restored it, and though it would be great to have two early Thunderbirds (since he has a 1956 too). This car has been restored and looks “showroom” new.
    ENJOY!

Fantastic! I've always thought the '55s had the cleanest lines of all the early T-birds and this one clearly shows why. It sounds great, too! Thanks, Lou!

👍Nice video Lou! Such an underrated Ford. My father in law has one almost identical (possibly 1956) however has the 312 engine due to OEM block damage. He's had it since the early 70s. I recall him having the bumpers re-chromed 20 yrs ago & spoke w/ him in depth about all the work he's put into his "Baby-TBird" .... same time he told me of the LEAD filler body work that he was particularly proud of & perfecting while restoring the car.
Sadly, today it stays covered, sits in garage w/ the rest of 'em gathering dust & aging just like all the rest of us. Glad to see this 1 being driven & shown off in the beautiful winter season Sun☀️

I always debated which was my favorite early T-bird. Like you Lou, I would always go with the '57, but now seeing Dennis's '55, I really think it's my favorite model. As Dennis mentioned, it's clean and uncluttered. I also love that dash and steering wheel. The '56 looked heavy with the continental kit......although I would be very happy to own one of those too! Just a nit to pick....and only FYI..... in 1956, CA released the yellow with black letters license plates, and in 1963, they released the now infamous black plates that everyone covets. Back in the day, you disposed of your old plates and installed new ones about every 10 years. In 63 the black plates were forever due to population explosion, and in 1970 the blue with yellow letters came out. 3 letters, 3 numbers, soon after, they switched them to 3 numbers then 3 letters (except commercial plates) and finally they produced the 7 digit plates and eventually they were white with dark blue lettering like now.........bottom line is this Birdie could be on it's THIRD plate depending upon it's first registration date... jus' so you know Lou... Happy Holidays!!

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Dennis says that the license plate was the original one when brand new-NO. Up to 1962 the California license plates were yellow back ground with black lettering. This Thunderbird has plates HKT035 sequence most likely from around 1965. It started AAA001 in 1962 ended in 1970 with ZZZ999.

Hey Lou!! What a BEAUTIFUL car!! For me, the 55 is my fave, then the 57, then the 56. I love the clean lines of the 55 - but i hate the cont. kit on the 56. I think all the 55 cars came with power seat as standard. They did not in 56 or 57. They sent one of these to here in Australia in late 1954 as a promotion - a white RHD one. It was bog standard with no heater & no radio, & was a 3 speed manual. But the public were enthralled at the power seat !!!! Tiger.

My good friends father worked at a Ford dealership when these came out. He said that it was really considered a hot car in 1954. The Chevrolet dealership was about a half mile away. They had a ‘54 Corvette and the people from the Ford dealership were always trying to race the Corvette, but the Chevrolet dealership wasn’t having any of it. They were probably afraid of being shown up.

Reds: Torch Red in 1955, Fiesta Red in 1956 (my favorite red) and Flame Red in 1957 UNTIL the 1958 models came out. Ford kept making 1957 T-Birds along with the new 1958 T-Birds from September through December. So they added a few colors and retained others between the 1957 and 1958 models. So late 1957 T-Birds had once again the Torch Red color. That is why you see two different reds on 1957 T-Birds. (other fall of 1957 colors were Sun Gold, Azure Blue, Gunmetal Grey number two, and Seaspray Green).

tThat was a very interesting shot of the back end of that Thunderbird. I wonder if the taillights swap to a 55 Fairlane?

Finally! The CORRECT wire caps for 1955-56 T-Birds (56 had white center caps) instead of the Kelsey Hayes wire wheels people try to gaslight others into thinking are original to anything BUT 1962-1963 Sport Roadsters.

Excellent restoration except those plates didn’t come on that car. The originals were that color combo but these are the
Later ones that came out in ( I think) 1962.

Most 1955 steering wheel horn rings were snapped off. I have to laugh at the 150 mph speedometer. I think 130 mph would have been okay, since I have driven mine up to 120 mph a few times. I would bet a 1957 Super Charged F-Bird could approach 150 mph though (even though 1957 T-Birds had a 140 mph speedo). The T-Bird 292 and 312 have the best sound, along with Nailhead Buicks.

The very early 1956 T-Birds were also 6 volt.

I believe power seats were standard on the 1955 (and only 1955) but one could order power seat delete of course. I have owned 3 1956 and 3 1957 T-Birds, but never a 1955. I wish I had. Also the hardtop was standard. The soft top was the option. You could either order the soft top in lieu of the hardtop or order it in conjunction with the hardtop. No 1955 ever had portholes. And portholes were an OPTION on 1956 and 1957 Tbirds, but they were seldom ordered without portholes in 1956 or 1957.

Not sure, I do not remember, but is it that 1955s did not have resonators but 1956 and 1957s did?

Cars are not a basic need in life. It's a materialistic society, that tries to tell us otherwise.....😎

I know Robert McNamara made Ford a ton of money by making the T-Bird a big luxury coupe, but I would have loved to see what would have become of it had the car guys won out over the accountants.

Sorry, I am going to have to ding the restoration because they used stickers instead of actual ink stamps for the yellow inspection marks. Amos Minter would never approve.
