On "My Car Story" we're in Scottsdale AZ on 1-9-21.
We're looking at a 1957 Ford Thunderbird T Bird Convertible in Continental White Paint. The car features the factory E-Code “Dual Quad” carburetors 312 CI V8 engine producing 270 HP.
The car's Owner is Mark Dilly. Mark’s had this car since 2017. Mark shares he went to a car auction with his wife, and when she saw this car, she said now there is a car, and after a few times putting his hand in the air, his wife enjoys this classy car with him.

Brakes, tires, sway bars, and of course, those brake lights!
Any mods that make a car safer in handling/braking, is a great thing to do, IMO...those older cars, as great as they look, were not that great to drive, with the original setups. Discreet mods are an excellent way to go!

Awesome car! When I was a kid in Minnesota, the woman who lived next door to my maternal grandmother had one in her garage and she'd let us play pretend driving in it. When I was a teenager I asked why the car had sat in the garage "my whole life". I was born in '57. She told me that her son bought it new while he was in the Air Force. He bought it, drove it home from the dealer, then flew off to his station in Alaska. He died without ever driving it again. She said she would never sell it. Years later, she finally changed her mind, but I'd long since moved out of state and learned about the sale after it happened. She was a wonderful woman. Now, at sixty-three, I wonder why my grandmother, a close friend of the woman, never explained what had happened.
Thanks for bringing back some mostly good memories from my childhood.

Lou, I think the T-Bird Suzanne drove in the film was a white '56, with the pothole top. I'm basing it on a couple of shots of the sides and rear which were nearly the same as the '55. From most of the angles seen, it could be taken for a '57. I love everything about this T-Bird. Even the fender skirts look good, and I normally don't like them. Here's a fun fact. I'm the same age as the car, having turned 64 on 5/26 the day before this video was shot. This car will never look old. It's weird for me because my Dad turned 64 in May 1979 and a (1915) car his age then had LONG been an antique of the early automobile era. That's not happening to me. The down side is 3/4 of my life (since 15-16 in 1973) the American auto party has been over with. With few exceptions, everything that could have been done, had been done. Later this would prove true for movies and music. The latter there has only been over with 1/2 my life (since '89) when rap, hip-hop, etc came along. Two good things though is smoking indoors has been gone half my life, and dogs are appreciated more than ever.

Way back in 1972, right after I got married, I went looking for a second car. At the Ford dealership I saw a 57 T Bird and fell in love with it. What I was really looking for was a truck as I was just starting out as a plumbing apprentice. I ended up with a 68 F100 which turned out to be a smart move. I still think about that Thunderbird and what if.... to me it's still the most beautiful car ever made. Thanks for sharing.

My dad worked at a Ford sub assembly plant in the late 50s here in Blue Island Il. They were throwing away 'excess parts' because they didn't want to store them anymore. I still have a set of 1957 T bird tail light lenses that he brought home after Ford threw them out, never installed, like new. Boxes are long gone..Neat car! 1 of my favs from the 50s!

What a beautiful car. I have never driven one, but only got to sit in one for a brief minute. And it did have the larger-than-life steering wheel. LOL!! I would’ve opted for the smaller wheel as well. All the (slight) modifications will only make this car last longer, make it more enjoyable, and safer to cruise around in. Wow that was one outstanding Thunderbird! Very rich looking and the options were really nice on this unit. I enjoyed the ride along and I loved that engine sound! What a great video this was. Hi Lou! How are you? This is a very unique car and one of my friends owns it. The car he owns is not 1957. I think it's a bit older. He is very proud of his car. My judgement on styling comes down to "How does it look going down the road?". Busy details play less of a part than the overall form and stance. Glad these My Car Stories with their drive-by shots tend to show that.

I love this car! If I were at that auction in the market to buy a car, it would either have cost Mark more or he wouldn't have bought it.
I would have been raising my hand, too! Of the three years the Thunderbird was a two-seater, I like the 57 the best. All three years are close in design, but each has slight differences from the previous year. In the case of the 57, it was a little bit lower, a little bit wider, but most of Ford designers got rid of the continental kit and put the spare tire in the trunk. As a teenager and young twentyish young man, every time I saw a two-seater T-bird, I would start daydreaming about owning one. It was right up there with the first generation Mustang and Cougar as cars I wanted, and if I were a collector, they would be in my collection. Two things I want to point out from watching the video, the car Suzanne Sommers drove in the movie was a 56. The other thing, those were not vent windows you were talking about being tinted. Those were wind flaps designed to defuse the blowing in your face with the windows down. For obvious reasons, you didn't see the windows raised up, but the Thunderbirds didn't have vent windows. Those flaps were a much needed item with the windows rolled down. Fantastic car and great video. "My Car Story" is my favorite TH-cam channel. Intelligently-done restomod. I've never known that Ford had cast a dual quad manifdold for that engine series. All that's missing is the 3rd pedal for at least a 4-speed gearbox, replacing that sluggish slushbox from way back then. A set of tuned headers wouldn't hurt either

Interestingly, even being big OEM Fan, I would do upgrades also ( esp brakes/tires) : had a few Fords that I upgraded : out of necessity and experience...ps: does seem like Ford really started keeping ( with GM FUELIES, & MOPAR SUper D) up, & lot of HORSEPOWER &* Racing stuff in late 1956: ( e.g. 1956 TBIRD ENGINES, AND F Codes in 1957and in later years,, etc)....ps: interestingly, I bought a 1956 4DR/Fairlaine* Thunderbird Engine low Miles/ a gorgeous *White EXT/BLUE *velour(?)/ auto/ Dual Exh/ Skirts etc… Unfortunately: a freak accident totalled 1965, barely started upgrades,etc. Oddly, akways thought the 1956 Steering Wheel to big, akso. ……..

Another great review and an awesome example of the best era in American car design, Lou. I truly miss the days when you could see a car from a distance and instantly identify the make, model, and year. My daily is a finely kept latest generation Impala LTZ... a 2014. Totally indistinguishable from the last production year, the 2020. In a way, that’s good because it still looks “new”, but I miss the excitement and anticipation of significant annual appearance updates. Do you recall which automatic transmission is in this T-Bird? Suzanne Somers drove a white 1956 T-bird in American Graffiti. Not a 57. And who puts A/C in a car without roll up windows? Those side curtains must really be something. Would have loved seeing the porthole top and side curtains. The car was beautiful nonetheless. I've loved 57 T-birds since I saw Fred MacMurray drive one into fresh tar on I Love Lucy in the 1960s. They don’t come with air condition from the factory dealer will add it, but that’s not the correct fan combo and it would have the York AC compressor to be. Correct?

Marilyn Monroe preceded Suzanne Sommers. She owned a black 1956 T Bird convertible until 1962. She bought it to treat herself after completing the movie "The Seven Year Itch".

'55-'57, all Thunderbirds were convertibles. '57 was the best year and then Ford ruined the Thunderbird in '58 forever.

Nope 61& 62 convert sports roadsters are the best looking T birds 👍 not to mention you could get a big block 390 by then . and a 406 in the 62. Nothing much could touch one of them back in the day in a street race 😊

Power-Weight ratio. You may have a 300hp big block but you’re also having to move a 1,000lbs more car than a 1st gen. Even a bare bones D-code ‘57 would have the advantage over the bullet bird.
Still love the third gen design,my second favorite pick of the eleven, but I wish McNamara had kept the car as a Corvette rival instead of chasing sales.
