  • In 1969 there were intense political and sectarian rioting took place in Northern Ireland. There had been sporadic violence throughout the year arising out of the civil rights campaign and a call for UN troops to patrol the province by Irish Taoiseach Jack Lynch. There were also calls for the disbanding of the controversial volunteer police force the B specials. Local residents in the affected areas blame 'outsiders' for stirring up the troubles and causing damage.

    Interviewer has some nerve. 'You say youre all innocent but theres an IRA slogan on that wall'... what a ridiculous and smarmy thing to say to a wee woman that's just lost her home.

    It's an old tale and so sad. The average people didn't want involved, the ones destroying their neighborhood, didn't live there. Neighbors got along until outsiders came in.

      NI was founded on a sectarian headcount. It's a sick society. So as long as the state continues to exist then sectarianism cannot end.

    The saddest part about this was where the reasonable Protestant was trying to talk rationally about what had been happening, only for more hot-headed partisans to shout him down and focus on us vs them.

    Ian Paisley and his kind have much to answer for, speaking as a dispassionate and neutral outsider.
    Egomaniacs, using religion to exert influence. Republicanism is a political idea, not a religious faith.
    Loyalism, because of the premise that it is conditional to continued protestant ascendancy to the throne, not so much, but that, alas, harkens back to an age when religion was deeply entwined with politics.
    Ironically, it requires a leap of faith by all denominations on the island of Ireland, both sides of the border, to fully embrace one of the founding tenets of democracy - the separation between Church and state, in thought, word and deed.
    Clergy have no business in politics.
    An Irish Republic cannot call itself independent, while enact laws influenced by the Vatican. That is the conduct of a vassal state.
    Just my opinion.

    • @sentimentaloldme
      @sentimentaloldme 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are greatly mistaken if you think the Republic of Ireland are influnced by the Vatican...That must be the reason all the CatholicChurches are closing down all over the country...There are only a minorty of young people going to church...There are very few Catholic priests left to say Sunday Mass and the few that are left are over 60 or 70. You do realize that being gay is legal in the republic as is abortion both against the wishes of Rome.. .On the contrary it's in the six counties of Ireland religion is being used as an excuse to vilify the Irish state . Nothing could be further from the truth... I don't believe in any church...It's used as an excuse for keeping our country divided. Until our country is one north & south working for all the people of the island will there ever be peace in the north of our island...Now days it would be hard to meet one young person that even believes in a God...be it a "Protestant God or a Catholic God."....The country is now made up of people from all over the world. There is no animosity or discrimination against any one no matter where they come from but when we look uo the road at our neighbours we see people threatening to burn women in bonfires with pure hate and bigotry in their hearts...What do you thing that picture tells the world about a certain society in the six north eastern counties of our island.
