Yeah, me too, the quality was so low on that figure that totally deserves the worst figure of the year.
Not defending Hound, but altho he had horrible plastic and was ratger costly. I thinl some of the designs (in theory) deserve some merit. Such as the wheel transformation and accessory intergration. If only it had better plastic/diecast, better tolerance
I was surprised not to see Takara Masterpiece Hound on either the most disappointing or worst figure list.
He had already planned on giving the spot to a Beast Wars figure (jk bobby - lol)
What may have saved hound was the accuracy with which he was made.

Interesting lists. I didn't put hands on the MMC bot so it wouldn't be on my list. The FTs Warpath would be on mine for this year. I love both modes, and the transformation is quite good. I know he has some odd shoulders but I find I can get him in all sorts of excellent poses. Thanks for the content. It is always enjoyed and appreciated.

great review robert of skull face. i've got all of the kfc junkions. easy to transform, fun, nice strong piece. one of the kick stands on one of them broken off a bit but it hasnt been an issue standing it in bike mode. wreck gar, i had to glue his beard to keep it on. other than those issues they were a great buy. i noticed they have jumped in price since i bought them on taobao

After Galvatron, I am totally into Fanstoys too. I have FT-44 too. I also ordered Soundwave but missed out on Blitzwing. And oh, yes, MP Scream too. Almost the same list!

Nobody noticed the head of the Studio Cell Unicron actually looks more like the Unicron in Unicron Trilogy instead of the 1986 movie, namely it has mustaches while the 1986 version doesn't (wish I could attach pictures here for a direct comparison)? But this whole figure is supposed to be the 1986 version...
I hope you get to review Fans Hobby Naval Commander when he comes out. That's a figure I'm really looking forward to and I really respect your opinion when it comes to Masterpiece level toys.
I love mmc blastoff its impetus/vortex i have several problems with. Windows popping off, helicopter tail clearance issues, one arm has vary limited rotation due to molding, getting it together in vehicle mode and dont even get me started on that head. If its not a headmaster, dont let the head just pop off.
What was the drama you alluded to around the FansToys Astrotrain? I am not really up-to-date on FansToys drama.
I haven't got much this year, but Siege has really filled out my collection. Grapple, Hoist and Trailbreaker were big wins for me coupled with 3rd Party, mainly the DJD figures. A lot of exclusives from Hasbro, specifically Gigawatt and Elita-1, were a welcome additions. EDIT: Good to see Cell Studio Unicron. No-Regret buy for me. Many 3P haters REALLY hate this guy, because he is so good.

Wow! Totally thought MP Hound would make worst figure of the year
Technically Mp hound was last year. That’s prob why. Tmreviews just used it cuz he didn’t get it till 2020
It certainly makes my list of worst. Hound looks so good. The transformation (on paper) is great. But the plastic quality is atrocious. One of his calf flap hinges disintegrated, and he's developed a crack in the swivel assembly holding his head and shoulder cannon. I paid less for Ocular Max's Swindle, yet that figure feels ten times better. He takes a tumble, maybe the spare tire will pop off. If Hound were to take a similar tumble, I fear he'll shatter.
I don't agree with MMC assaultus being on 2nd disappointing since it improved on aspects from zeta armageddon/bruticon like robot modes for the team and incursus improved on blitzkrieg

I would have loved to see what you think of G-Creations's M. Wrath (Bayverse Grimlock). I put it just behind FT Thomas on my top of 2020 list. Seems like a figure you would like, at least in terms of its attributes (I know you're not a TF Movie fan, neither am I), but hopefully you get a chance to look at it sometime.
I bought the ZT Bee hesitantly after seeing some reviews of it being too fiddly, but because it had the best looking sculpt. I absolutely love it, and it makes me want to buy Freedom leader just to go next to it
I'm curious what Bobby meant with Unicron & Astrotrain and the future of third party. I have both figures but haven't been following the story surrounding them.
i bought the zeta toys bruticus recently. lots of issues with racket (swindle). came with windows missing and the drivers side panel was the same as the passenger side. also the locking flap where the head goes in combiner mode was missing the whole left side pegs. i emailed them and they sent me the parts. i had to email them again because they forgot the panel. they say they will send it. the only reason they can send it to me is because i am in china. if i wasnt id be fucked. buyer beware
TransCraft's Bumblebee is coming out soon; can we expect a review from you next year? It looks like it holds together well, better than both the Zeta and the TE offerings.

In regards to your disappointment to the Transformers R.E.D line, I know these aren't made to complete against them but you and/or Pinkerton should really check out that new G1 Flame Toys Optimus model kit. I bought into the hype of the R.E.D line and only opened Optimus and found myself wanting in the articulation department. I had recently picked up the Flame Toys model kit so I decided to build it to see which one I'd be happier with and I'm sure it's no surprise to hear that this one is MUCH better at delivering. I know you own the IDW versions that were built and painted by Shaun (and I know these blow most 6'' figures out of the water) but after hearing Pinkerton enjoying the build of some Star Wars model kits to pass the time on NRR, I think you'll find the build experience of the G1 Optimus very satisfying and will be very happy with the end result. I ultimately ended up returning my R.E.D figures and I'm hoping Flame Toys does more G1 styled kits. Thanks for the posting these videos -- really looking forward to the next one! :)
I have a question, and much like Mr SkullFace’s disclaimer, it’s nothing more then a theory on my part, is it possible that all of these manufacturers have been struggling while dealing with the affects of covid19 on personal this year? I know there can be other reasons for QA issues in products. However, I’m wondering if covid19 could be the main contributing factor for this year??

Agreed on Gravestone. Transformation's only mildly scary if you know exactly where to be careful, and overall he's a gorgeous truck and probably the best-looking Menasor overall. I still like my Roadking better though.

I was blown away by the quality of the plastic in the Junkions. I have two of them. They are solid figures with some size and weight to them. Parts Forming! But, that is the gimmick with these figures.
I love articulation of Zeta Toys Pioneer (Bumblebee), but the transformation has a couple of tough clearance issues, or so I thought. It turns out if you get it partially transformed at the right angles, those clearance issues just go away.
If Zeta had made that Unicron as tall (or taller) than the Haslab version, it would have been the greatest 3rd Party Masterpiece figure ever made. Unfortunately, he's shorter than Hasbro Metroplex and Fort Max.
I believe it was deliberate, if cell was any bigger, it would incur the wrath of a commercial giant that would crush zeta to pieces.

I do not always agree with your reviews but is a good guide on what’s good what’s not. I actually like ft hunk but I can see why you were disappointed.
Personally, I think because Transform Element came out of the gate so strong with their Optimus, especially considering it launched at about 1/3 the cost of the then-upcoming MP-44, that people created this unrealistic belief in their overall quality. Everything I've gotten from them since has felt lazy, unfinished, poorly controlled, or lackluster. I'm glad they haven't been a one-and-done company, but their follow-ups have not been encouraging to me.

Nice seeing the Tape Team on the 'good' list here! I was surprised at how much better the MS offering was compared to New Age. Still, both are great companies with great figures, so nobody really loses by choosing either.
A pretty good list, Bobby. I ended up commenting on most everything below, probably out of boredom, but it is what it is.
Props for the official Masterpiece criticism from the get-go. I know plenty of people have these complaints these days, but so many people are very apologetic for TakaraTomy, and it's just not necessary. Their stuff is getting worse. They need to hear that, instead of a bunch of pandering praise.
I agree on Hunk, too. Hunk is one of the most disappointing for me this year. I didn't buy it because I could see the disappointment from a mile away, but it's a damn shame because I love Brawn and wanted a good one... and this just wasn't up to scratch, especially compared to all their other efforts this year.
R.E.D. was definitely disappointing as well. They should have been a guaranteed success, yet they're just anything but that. Revoltech Optimus, on the other hand, has me curious because I've had a bunch of their previous figures (including the Rodimus) and none of them are particularly good.
X-Transbots Motormaster looks great but I missed out on it earlier in the year and they have yet to reissue it. Now, after having the trailer reveal and seeing how it is in-hand, I'm having serious thoughts about getting rid of my XTB Stunticons and only staying with the FansToys ones, maybe even DX9 as well. I don't mind having multiples, but XTB really screwed this up, and it turns out he's not even tall enough to go toe-to-toe with the others (another thing they lied about - they said he was originally 49cm, now 50cm, and it turns out he's not even 49cm).
Blast-Off I still give to Zeta. It's not perfect, but I think it's one of their best Combaticons (for whatever that's worth). There's some kibble but it's decent overall and close enough to the toy that I dig it. I'm disappointed nobody else has topped it yet (at least in my mind), especially with how good MMC's Vortex turned out.
And then there's FansHobby's Minerva, which I think I've talked to death, but I think this is an absolute failure of a figure, and it's still completely wrong. The transformation should be simple. The rear of the car should form the legs, not the arms (and vice-versa). They just screwed it up completely, as far as I'm concerned.
It's a shame the big MMC DJD bots both came out this year when people didn't have as much money to go around, same with Astrotrain, but at least MMC's figures are readily available (at non-scalper prices, I should add). I'm hoping for that Astrotrain to get a decently-priced reissue soon. Such a beautiful figure, but one which is a bit too expensive right now (relative to the already-high though somewhat justifiable retail price). It still sucks how hard FansToys figures have become to pre-order, because I wanted Astrotrain really badly, but for $300+, I'll just take the risk and wait.

surprised to see studio cell on the top 5 list since i didnt think you liked it. it's the only 3p masterpiece figure i've ever bought so i dont have much by way of comparison but i was and am blown away by it. i think if you used somebody else's guide for transformation instead of the pretty awful instructions you would have liked it more
Shame about TE Bee. Their MP scaled Optimus was good, and I heard no complaints about it. Their MP scaled Mirage then shipped with QC issues in the hips. I also got their T-Beast Bumblebee, and the right foot has its ankle rocker installed backwards so it rotates out instead of in. QC, QC, QC.

There were some surprises on these list, but I think we all can say number one on the “best” list is what we all thought it would be. Thomas is the culmination of materials, paint, and engineering, and hopefully changes the game for the better.
I think takara today lives off the rep of 10+ years ago. Sticking to actual facts their quality has consistently gone downhill but people still talk them up based on their old rep when they did make higher quality products. Ironically TOMY outshines them consistently in making great products that dont break. "Oh but its the same company".... nope, not in the real world.

I find that all my toy / well, at least most my toys are very good. Because I leave them in the box. I've been disappointed so many times we're taking things out and transforming them excetera excetera.. But if they're perfect, look good in the Box. .. They're perfect and look good in the box. LOL. Same with anything else like Marvel Legends excetera excetera. Exception.. I got a bunch of ko Transformers, quite a few now, and for the price I could open them and play with them.. and vast majority are just awesome. Awesome. I'm sure I'd be disappointed in The Originals if I open them for the price they are and there be any loose joined / bad paint Etc cetera.

I thought disappointing figure would be ft Air Raid, not ft Brawn. Brawn fans toys changed the paint from metalic to matte from fan complaint/request. But Air Raid's waist swivel is something we werent expecting.

@@andreyofdoom Fans Toys production and pricing are their business, and the marketplace will decide if it is fair or not. It seems after almost a year of it being bought and sold on the secondary market over and over, it looks like FT knew what they were doing, and the collectors world would agree. Collecting Fans Toys figures is not a right. It is a privilege that now leans more favorably to those with more disposable income. It may one day be unaffordable for me, but I will enjoy what I was able to collect nonetheless, as should anyone currently priced out the game.

But that's how opinions work. Each is equally valid and equally important.
Funny enough, I went in mostly expecting Tigatron to be trash, but was incredibly impressed with a lot of what they did and how it came out. Not perfect, but completely topped my expectations. On the flip side, i thought Hound would be an easy slam dunk, but to me, that is the one that was trash, and my copy has never broken or stressed, either.
To like Tigertron, you must be a fan of Beast Wars. No self respecting Gen1 fan will ever like BW.

Just a personal preference thing but I don't do Facebook, don't want to pay double, don't want to hunt all over the place for a length of time, and am not really keen on preordering something 6+ months before a review exists, especially when there are usually only 1-2 pre-order-able options so I might care about one a little but seldom enough to justify $100-$300 sight unseen and ship date unknown.
*Sigh* I know that's just the world of third party, but nowhere is it nearly as crazy in all of those regards but Fanstoys.
The red series is pretty bad. Without the mechanism for a transformation, articulation should be spot on, but it wasn’t.
Plus, I hear that they feel very very cheap and hollow from reports. I haven't handled any in my case, so i'm not sure. Plus they're Wal-mart exclusives and I think we all know that they have a pretty bad habit of stocking things and cancelling pre-orders and stuff

The fact that you have to "apologize" for offending ADULT TOY COLLECTORS because you like toys or dislike toys that they may not, is the most asinine thing in the fucking world to me, dude. That aside, I agree with that Mors / Tortor tie. Those figures ruled, and ended up being way better and way more fun than I expected.
It literally makes me angry that ADULT TOY COLLECTORS get angry at anything regarding a) someone else’s opinion, and b) get angry about ANYTHING regarding a piece of plastic.
