Rookie Cards Are OVERRATED-Baseball Card Hot Takes

- Rookie Cards are Synonymous with baseball cards. Rookie cards are the first card of a player released during the first year of their professional career. Historically, these cards are extremely sought after and extremely expensive. In this episode of baseball card hot takes, a viewer disagrees and thinks that rookie cards are actually OVERRATED. In this video I share my thoughts on this hot take and many more!
My hot take, Ezequiel Tovar will become a stats accumulator and only someone who follows him will truly appreciate his career (speaking as someone who has followed him since Spokane and owns a PSA 10 BCA Green Atomic).
Man I’m hordinh his cards right now. Compare him to Masyn Winn (both 22 until Tovar is 23 in August). Tovar has .1 war more right now and more experience (more minor league time + signed at 17) and Tovar is already contacted and paid for the future. Masyn Winn isn’t paid out yet for the future and none of his minor league stats reflect his MLB performance. Tovar’s cards are 1/4 of the price at the most of Winns so it’s a no brainer to buy away on Tovar. I see Tovar becoming a star at this rate
I mean I’ll take your Mike Trout rookies if you no longer want them
lol,RIGHT!!!😂
Right, I save them all. They all get a sleeve. Never know who is gonna light it up in the future.
I love me some Real One Autographs. Having a factory auto on a retro looking card of a modern player just hits different. They are fire!
I’m a relic junkie.
Someone needs to address the issue with PSA and their new slabs. The vast majority of them have what look like hairline cracks in the corners. Lots of posts on Facebook groups and PSA is stating there's no issue and it's part of their "injection molding process?" This is total BS and if that's the case, switch back to the older style or offer to repair at no cost as we already paid for the grading on our damaged slabs!
If Bonds does get into the HOF (he won't), it should only be done AFTER Pete Rose gets in.
With the way baseball is now actively pushing gambling on TV and at the games both Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson should be in the hall,
Great takes as always Scottie. I do not believe Ohtani’s cards are overpriced as we are seeing a generational talent build his HOF career. The only thing that could derail the value is if he reaches the playoffs and does not have a huge impact (Which is hard to imagine). If he is the lynchpin for a Dodgers World Series win (Or multiple titles), his cards will likely go up further.
Favorite rookie card all time is Harper’s flagship 661 . 457 graded total between psa & Beckett!
Ohtani cards are high it seems to me always
As a young boy I started collecting (12 yrs. old) my buddies used their cards in the spokes of their bicycles. When a 1983 Topps Wade Boggs was his rookie, period. No parallel inserts no specialty cards. I get it. Ventured into having my cards graded. With all certainty I can advise that Topps is horrible with their borders.
500,000 cards of each player. they gotta strict deadline to get product out. mistakes will happen
@@ICEICEBABY-yk3ck You're right brother.
@@ICEICEBABY-yk3ck Agreed, brother.
Hot take:
PSA graded 1991 Topps Desert Shield rocks!
Barry Bonds cards have already erupted. Rare 90's cards of his sell for big dollars.
💉
PSA 10 of his rookie is worth money - second year cards and onward of any player are worthless unless vintage
Between Acuna, Trout, and Betts...I see why you are saying that....
Great video, I didn't think those are the true MLB debut patches why wouldn't that player not want that patch for themselves?
My fav is bowman first sapphire or rookie SP’s. Somehow basic chrome first sells.
Love this format, keep it up.
Heritage Real One Red Ink Autos are so much better than Dynasty. If you've ever opened a box/case of Heritage you'd realize the odds of pulling one. A video comparing the two products and their prices would be a much watch.
bowman 1st are over rated. i dont collect cards of guys in the minors that may never even play in the majors
Hot take - Aaron Judge is Giancarlo Stanton 2.0
@@dsphillips16 finkle is einhorn. FINKLE IS EINHORN!!!!!!!
I mean, aside from being a far superior hitter and fielder, and not being injured as a result of basic baseball plays and not having constant non contact injuries... Sure, Stanton 2.0🙄
I agree in the sense of paying a premium for them before they make the majors but I do like them for the players who make it.
@@snerdterguson he’s absolutely incredible. I love Aaron Judge. I 100% hope I’m wrong. I just don’t know how a guy that big can stay healthy playing center field. If he can stay healthy he’s an easy 1st ballot HOF. IF…
Dynasty eye appeal > Heritage Red Ink eye appeal
And it's not close!
To the question RPAs will be more sought after in future years. It depends if you're talking about Actual RPAs or Rookie Jersey Auto's. A lot of people don't know that they are not the same thing. RPAs will be more sought after but not RJAs.
Let me guess, the media hyped up person you are referring to is batting 101 ops+, enough war if they play over 20 straight years, healthy, they would finally have a shot at the hall, and their rookie chrome autos are selling for 2.5 times as much as a very likely future HOFer, such as Arenado or Goldschmidt
I do stand corrected after looking up their stats, 102 ops+, looks like the guy is HOF bound lol😂
Were you hinting at Jose Ramirez??? Answer me! Before I buy his cards 🤣
Gotta disagree on the sp thing. The image variations have far gewer parallels. Even with the green, gold and orange the totals are less than 300 cards
Anything Ohtani is overpriced IMO. Try to buy a box of 2018 baseball cards sometime...Price is pretty whack just because Ohtani.
Jumping in heavy on rookies before they have two to three good years is a bad idea. Mac Jones or Kenny Pickett are good examples.
Bonds cards are already expensive, pretty much only 2nd to Griffey for the era and I don't think he'll ever pass Griffey due to Griffey's likability factor. I think Bonds will get in the HOF some day. As for the Ortiz comparison, David Ortiz played the vast majority of his career and certainly all those Red Sox seasons with MLB drug testing in place. You can make the argument he got better AFTER mandated drug testing was implemented. To casually throw his name alongside Bonds is quite the false equivalence (or the hottest of your hot takes). Allllll this said, great segment.
I don’t think Bonds cards will erupt if he gets in. His autos and other rare cards are already pretty expensive. Other than the Tiffany’s, his rookies are junk wax, so they won’t go up in value too much.
Awesome cover thanks Scottie b
Some are over rated, I don't know why people save every single rookie card they pull
Base cards of stars / HOFers are the only cards worth buying.
Love this segment
Rookie cards will never not be sought after
Kinda click baity 😂 I agree with you though 💯🎯👍🏼
Rookie Cards Are Overrated Is The Most Dumbest Statement I’ve Ever Heard
To be fair, some players Rookies are just bad. I personally collect Randy Arozarena, and with the 2020 explosion, his rookie cards are just not there for me, as well as others. I have more of his high end vet cards than his rookie cards because they are well, better. That said most players rookie cards are definitely better, but I do think rookie cards are overated due to the fact the only difference is a logo, and with changes in the hobby players have as many rookie autos as they do autos the next 5-10 years, so they are pretty watered down
@@rileyesmay would you rather have a rookie autograph or a second year autograph ?
@JayAintFake Again, it has some variables. If I am choosing a rookie auto with 5,000 copies so I am 1 of 5,000 collectors with the card, versus a 2nd year where there's only 500 copies of the card, it's hard to say the rookie is that much better. I have done the math with Randy Arozarena, and his rookie autos are around 10 times as printed as his equivalent autos to date. I think people get caught up in having a certain card, that they forget everyone else has the exact same card, and that their collection isn't rare or unique. Rare and unique cards historically have been the most sought after years down the road, have they not?
Ohtani is becoming the best hitter in baseball.
Well done 🎉
Barry owns the single season AND career home run marks. Very impressive.
That's like saying it is impressive for a guy in a Ferrari winning Gold in the 1,000 meter at the Olympics.
He had to cheat to do it. I'm impressed by his career from 1987-1998(9), but am not impressed in the least by what followed.
buy PSA 10 rookie cards of hall of famers - everything else is not worth it.
Lets say I want to run the checklist and collect a SET of Parallels.. Everyone wants to leave steak on the table and flip the newest... people need to slow down... FFS
Bonds will not make HOF and Rookies will always be sought after!!!
Even so, he’s still one of the best hitters of all time. He didn’t need the juice!
I think there was a massive over-reaction to Barry Bonds using steroids.
He was a great player who deprived fans of a clean end to his great career by cheating. And in so doing, altered the record books artificially. He made it so he's likely never HOF. Seems like the reaction was appropriate, and well.deserved.
Not nearly as bad as the reaction to Tatis. Bonds was actually shooting up. Tatis I don't think was shooting up and more then likely mess up and took medicine that had a banned chemical in it.
@@djsredzonehe was injecting bro stop coping
@@frankiefortch not a Tatis or san Diego fan. Just something I've noticed. Still alot of people riding bonds tho.
Scotty Buttons is under priced and sustainable …
I think PETE ROSE should DEFINITELY be in the HALL OF FAME BEFORE BARRY BONDS FACT!!
I love these ✌🏻🤟🏻⚾
Bonds, Mcguire, and Clemens are all HOF worthy in my opinion. Anyone think LeBron isn't getting in?
Bonds definitely isn’t getting in
Smart collecting are the key to modern day collecting, collect only on SSP and autos never the number cards
5:30 yes Barry Bonds will get into the [HOF]
Nope, don't see it happening for a long time. Will take an entire generation of sports writers to retire/pass away. It will be 20+ years before he has a chance.
Bonds definitely won’t be getting into the HOF
mike trout is trash cards be in dollar bins
Investing in Bonds and Clemens is a very long term and safe investment, and very likely to pay off. Just depends if you want your money tied up for so long
Pete Rose collectors have been saying the same thing since the mid 80’s. That’s almost 40 years. There has been some increase in Rose over the years but it’s been a slow roll. And the problem when comparing Bonds and Rose is that they printed so many more copies of Bonds’ cards. I just don’t think it’s worth buying Bonds if your main objective is financial. There are many other better options.
@JenniferMedina-bg1zb for sure, like I said it's a very long game for them. The main difference between them and Rose though is eligibility, but it's still going to take a while
Ohtani cards are very overpriced, PSA 10 retail parallels are still doing $800+
talking about the GOAT... yep better than THE BABE!
@@ICEICEBABY-yk3ck that doesn’t change the fact you have very common cards of his selling at an insane multiple…that is how you lose money
Shohei Overrated cards are overpriced! Judge, Soto cards prices underpriced! Strange
I hope Barry Bonds never makes the HOF.
Autos in general are overrated.
